Cardinals Sign Scott Linebrink

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 10, 2012 at 4:41pm CDT

The Cardinals have signed Scott Linebrink to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training, B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest tweets. SFX represents the right-hander.

Linebrink posted a 3.64 ERA with 7.0 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and a 38.8% ground ball rate in 54 1/3 innings for the Braves in 2011. The 35-year-old owns a 3.51 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 12 MLB seasons. The Angels were the one team that was publicly linked to Linebrink this offseason. Given their interest in Luis Ayala and others, it appears that GM Jerry Dipoto still seeks relief help.

The Cardinals have also added J.C. Romero and R.J. Swindle to the bullpen mix since winning the 2011 World Series.

I’m thinking he’s the veteran right handed for the pen we’ve been looking for.

He’s the veteran Brewer fans were looking for the Cardinals to sign.  In other words, if Linebrink’s the answer, then you don’t want to know the question.

Linebrink will be a nice addition if he continues to be effective.

Stole him from under the Angels noses. Now they know how it feels! (sarcasm)

we never stole anyone except torii hunter from the rangers. if you are talking about pujols your management previously gave up re-signing him to the 10 year contract.

it will be also one of the best free agent signing for the angels. ours is just totally on a different scale than yours.

I have no idea what you’re saying, but go get ’em, tiger!

Call me when the Angels win a few more World Series and then we can talk.  Perhaps that is this “totally different scale” you speak of.

minor league deal, solid depth signing. and it sounds like Oswalt will end up in STL too since the Rangers are out.

It’s kinda weird. Braves always seem to have a reliever they want to acquire in a trade each season, don’t get him then sign him to a deal a few years later or actually get them in a trade, then they never resign them.
