Rays Place Jeff Keppinger On Restricted List

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 9, 2012 at 8:44am CDT

The Rays placed infielder Jeff Keppinger on the restricted list due to a personal matter following last night’s game, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. The Rays called up outfielder Brandon Guyer in a corresponding move and indicated that Keppinger’s absence will be a short one.

The Rays signed Keppinger to a one-year, $1.25MM contract in January. The 32-year-old has a .313/.338/.453 batting line in 68 plate appearances as a second and third baseman in Tampa Bay. Players on the restricted list do not count toward a team's 25-man or 40-man roster. They do not accrue service time and they don't always get paid.

Wow, wonder what happened and if it’ll be a long term situation.  Inge should have bided his time longer.

I think Ex Ray Cantu is still out there also after he opted out of his MiLB deal. Don’t think he signed on with a team yet and anyone is better than A ball bat Inge.

Yeah, that’s why I was hoping for Inge 😉  Sox need all the help they can get this season, that’s for sure.

I see now that it’s expected to be a short term situation, so that’s good for him and the Rays.  No way Keppinger keeps that 126 OPS+ up though.

I think Inge was mostly interested in getting regular playing time.  Full time job in Oak > playing til longoria is back

Some of the Sox fans are gonna start roasting me Chico pretty soon, cause I am all for calling up Lavarnway and moving guys like Salty. The team isn’t as good as some fans think it is and they have a couple of pieces they could get a little bit for, plus Middlebrooks and Lavarnway are (or will) be wasting time at Pawtucket.. Just wasting time.

I am also curious why JC Linares is still at AA when they have toads at AAA.. Let him play in Boston.. I still say anyone is better than McDonald.. Let JC have a go at it.

I was advocating for Linares if they thought Lin wouldn’t provide enough offense, before they went and got Byrd.  I agree- like Nava is going to do anything for them again, right?

I could live with Lavarnway and Salty splitting time, though of course Salty would bring more in return than Shoppach.  Tough break with Middlebrook’s hammy- hope he’s okay.

I doubt McDonald could hit his own pitching his bat is so pathetic. If the team insists on employing him for some odd reason.. let him throw BP.. It seems to be the one thing he CAN do, just like he did vs the Orioles a couple of nights ago.

Agreed with Lin.. Boston didn’t give him a chance even, sent him down and kept McDonald with -0- offense, nor defense. They just won’t give him a chance. They can’t say Linares cannot hit, cause it’s the one thing he has done in the minors so far.. yet he is rotting away at AA, while those 30+ year old retreads are playing at Pawtucket?? It’s like.. What gives here? I can understand Hassan and Lin, they are legit prospects, but Nava, Kroeger, repco? Those guys all need walking papers, not more AB’s..

I knew it was only a matter of time before John Silver started calling for a mutiny.  I’m with you.

Wasn’t it the Hispaniola or something like that, if I remember correctly?  Been way too many years.

HAHAHA. You are a good man Chico 🙂

yep.. The Hispaniola was INDEED ‘Ole LongJohn’s Ship in the MOVIE Treasure Island. LOL My favorite move as a Young’en with Robert Newton (my icon btw) and in the TV series, the ship was The Queen Anne’s Revenge, which was Blackbeard’s.. But who cared I reckon when it was for TV. LOL

Nice.  I will refer to you for all my pirate trivia from now on 🙂 Loved that movie, too.  I hadn’t realized they changed it in the TV series that followed, but that’s TV for you.

To quote another person on this board who will remain unamed 🙂

I thought Linares got hurt again.

Just checked and his MiLB page shows as “active”. Sure, they are sometimes a cpl days behind, but he has played in 26 games out of 31. That’s about right and don’t see anyone else with more than 29. It’s possible he is hurt yet again however.

Remind me again why the Giants let Keppinger and Fontenot go? Did they really think Theriot was better?

There’s rumblings that Chris Getz from KC may be getting traded. I could see him fitting in as a filler for the season with the Rays.

Well, I was mostly kidding though it does seem like he could be on the move today.  A C or C+ pitching prospect?

That’s okay, I just wanted to ask about getting for Getz.  Sounds about right for him, though.  The Rays might bite.
