3:42pm: The meeting between the Phillies and Bichette is scheduled for next Monday, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
3:07pm: The Bo Bichette market apparently has a new entrant. Matt Gelb, Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark of The Athletic report that the Phillies have scheduled a meeting with the free agent infielder and his representatives at Vayner Sports that will take place within the next few days. Philadelphia’s interest “is legitimate,” per the report — borne out of Bichette’s willingness to move off of shortstop and a protracted stare-down between the Phils and free agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, who has yet to sign. Gelb and Stark note that a deal between the Phillies and Bichette would all but close the door on Realmuto’s time in Philly and could also lead to a trade of third baseman Alec Bohm.
Bichette, still just 27 (28 in March), not only enjoyed a rebound 2025 season after an injury-wrecked 2024 showing — he turned in what was arguably the best all-around season of his career. In 628 trips to the plate, he slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs. His 6.4% walk rate, while still a couple points below league-average, was the best of his career in a full season, as was his 14.5% strikeout rate.
Bichette’s summer, in particular, was something to behold. He got out to a decent but fairly pedestrian start before heating up in May and catching absolute fire midsummer. From July 6 through season’s end, Bichette went supernova with a .381/.437/.591 slash in 238 plate appearances. He homered seven times, piled up an outrageous 24 doubles, walked at an 8.8% clip and fanned in only 11.3% of his plate appearances. Push back to mid-June, and Bichette closed out his season with 330 plate appearances of .350/.395/.538 production.
Of course, “season’s end” is a relative term in Bichette’s case. He suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament on Sept. 6 and did not return for the final three weeks of the regular season. Bichette spent the early rounds of the playoffs resting and rehabbing that balky knee. He was cleared for a return in the World Series, and while he was clearly moving at nowhere close to 100%, his bat remained unfazed. Bichette went 8-for-23 in 27 plate appearances and crushed what had the makings of an iconic, go-ahead, three-run homer off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7 of the World Series — a no-doubter blast that would’ve proven to be a game-winner had the bullpen held onto Toronto’s lead.
Critically, Bichette played second base when he took the field during the World Series. It was his first appearance at the position since his minor league days, but the willingness to defer to a superior defender at shortstop (Andres Gimenez) undoubtedly helps Bichette’s case in free agency. The primary knock on him for some time has been that he’s a well below-average defender at shortstop.
The Phillies, per The Athletic’s report, would likely use Bichette at third base. It’s fair to wonder whether he has the arm for the hot corner, given that Statcast pegged his arm strength in just the 36th percentile of big leaguers this past season. Bichette averaged 82.3 mph on his throws to first base, tying him with current Phillies shortstop Trea Turner in that regard. It’s a below-average mark but also not a death knell on his chances of playing a passable third base. That 82.3 mph average also ties fellow free agent Alex Bregman, and it’s actually a half-mile faster than Philadelphia’s incumbent third baseman, Bohm.
Most problematic for the Phillies would be how Bichette could fit into the payroll. RosterResource projects the Phils for a $266MM payroll. That’s down from their $284MM Opening Day mark from last year, but Bichette would push them beyond that point (barring some kind of backloaded or deferred contract). And while the actual cash payroll is down from last year, the team’s luxury tax payroll is not. The Phils have a projected $301MM of CBT obligations, per those same RosterResource estimates. That means they’d be taxed at a 95% rate for the first $3MM of Bichette’s average annual value and a 110% clip on the remainder.
In essence, Bichette would cost the Phillies close to double his annual salary — at least in year one of the contract. That number could decline in 2026, when Nick Castellanos, Taijuan Walker, Jesus Luzardo, Jose Alvarado, Adolis Garcia, Edmundo Sosa and Bohm (if he’s not traded) are all off the books. Philadelphia has “only” about $187MM of luxury tax obligations in 2027, but that’s before factoring in a notable arbitration class (headlined by Jhoan Duran and Bryson Stott) and before filling any of the vacancies created by that slate of departures. It’s easy to see that number ticking up in a hurry.
Still, the long-term payroll in Philadelphia is probably a bit cleaner than most would expect for a team with so many high-priced veterans. Zack Wheeler’s huge $42MM salary only runs through 2027. Harper’s annual salary is already relatively low for a player of his caliber, and it drops to $22MM in the final three seasons of his contract (2029-31). Harper, Turner, Cristopher Sanchez, Kyle Schwarber and Aaron Nola are the only players currently on long-term deals beyond the 2027 season, and Schwarber is the only member of that group who’ll be paid more than $27.5MM annually from 2028 onward. The Phillies have just over $117MM in guaranteed money on the books in 2028. Signing Bichette would really only inflate the 2026 payroll to problematic levels, and the Phils could backload or defer his contract to help offset some of that bloat.
Bichette landing with the Phillies would create a fascinating series of ripple effects. Teams that have been seeking help at third base (e.g. Pirates, D-backs, Mariners, Red Sox) might find a more willing trade partner in Philadelphia than they have in prior months, when Bichette was not under consideration by the Phillies’ front office. Bohm just agreed to a $10.2MM contract for the 2026 season and is a free agent next year.
Philadelphia would also need to make a catching acquisition. Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs are the only others on the roster. Gelb and Stark report that Minnesota’s Ryan Jeffers — a free agent following the 2026 season — has been of interest to the Phillies in the past. However, the Twins have signaled that they’re aiming to be competitive in 2026 and won’t trade stars like Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and Byron Buxton. Would they truly make Jeffers available, in light of that decision? Time will tell.
If not Jeffers (or Realmuto), the options are few and far between. Victor Caratini is a free agent and could be the most straightforward solution. The Phillies could try to pry Hunter Goodman from the rebuilding Rockies. Luis Campusano looks like an odd man out in San Diego, though he’s yet to prove he can be a passable catcher in the majors. The White Sox have received interest in young backstops Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero, but both would come with a high asking price, given their recent top prospect status and half decade of club control. The Reds have some depth with Tyler Stephenson, Jose Trevino and Ben Rortvedt all on the books and top prospect Alfredo Duno coming in a couple years. If the Phillies do go the trade route, then how does the other club pivot to fill its newfound catching need? And where does Realmuto land? The ramifications of a Bichette signing in Philly stretch further than most would expect at first glance.

This still seems unlikely to me, but it’s a great fight. He changes that lineup big time.
Fit not fight
Mught he a fight for his services so you’re half right!
*Phight
……please keep in mind that just over the horizon looms the 2027 work stoppage.
Has he been linked to every team yet? If not he’s a slacker and I wouldn’t want him or he should hire Boras.
Bo has been a good target from the outset, but I really never took it all that seriously given the payroll constraints. Love the fit with the bat, and am willing to cross my fingers and hope that he can make the adjustment to 3B at an adequate level.
DD and Middleton have a history of, when they make a meeting like this one, they either get it done that day or move on. This is now a serious option and I am enthused.
In the meantime, JTR and agent will call and sign tomorrow.
His signing would likely lead to a Bohm trade and not pursuing Realmuto.
Absolutely on Bohm; but not convinced with JTR. There has been word that they gave him a deadline of 1/9 (tomorrow) and if not they would look to other answers. The Bichette meeting certainly juices him a bit.
But if Realmuto accepts their deal tomorrow or over the weekend I still think that they meet with Bichette and find a budget exception if Bo is willing to sign a deal that they have already internally been willing to offer.
If JTR does not sign before Bichette, then I agree…they would have already been moving to the next plan at catcher.
If the Phillies sign Bo….JT would want to come back
Phillies trying to buy another first round exit lolzzzz
Hey that’s not funny
Trade Bohm for a catcher?
Well, I have had this little scenario in the back of my mind. Minasian and Moreno decide that O’Hoppe will never work after last season, and DD trades Bohm for Logan. I love the kid, and even if he never gets the whole contact/ OBP thing to a higher level, I think that his defense will bounce back and he can be a plus defensive catcher.
It won’t happen, but I know that the Angels are loaded with young catching talent and they might decide that D’Arnaud and a veteran will get them through for a year or so while they figure things out.
The Angels would never make that trade. O’Hoppe costs a lot less plus he plays a more coveted position and has a lot more pop than Bohm.
angels fan here would not make that trade
Tell me how many times that O’Hoppe has knocked in 97 runs in a season ( or close to it)? Bohm did it twice!!
@dakota – You did see the part where I said “it won’t happen” did you not? ; )
And you probably won’t find anyone on here that values catchers more than I do, as they are always the smartest and best-looking players on the team.
OA’Hoppe has never played in a lineup anywhere near as potent as PHI’s. One of those seasons PHI scored 150+ more runs. Hes also only played 2 full seasons where Bohm has played 5 and is a catcher.
Comparing RBIs is a moot point here.
I did. We are both in agreement, but I was adding the reasons they would not make the trade. Sorry about the confusion.
@dakota – The reasons that they wouldn’t make that trade…Logan is under control for what – 3 or 4 more seasons. Bohm for one. And he has upside, even as he was a huge disappointment for them last year. 25 is still very young in catcher years.
There was plenty of chatter out there about the front office and its take on his future taking a u-turn, so the 1% chance of this potentiality hit my bloodstream. He struggled and was having a hard time getting along with the pitching staff at times and it was a very difficult season for him. It baffled me as Philly loved the guy. He was an energizer bunny with a great work ethic and the defensive potential in all ways looked positive, while the bat showed real signs of making the jump to the majors.
So talk to Perry for me and tell him that he should move on from Logan for the good of the Angels. The Phils will work out a lemon law return out of a core sense of decency and respect.
Ivan Herrera. The Cardinals have a few catchers. I’d trade Bohm and Kirkering for Herrera and Romero.
Cardinals would prolly be more willing to part with Pagés, and he’d be a better fit for the Phillies given his defense. If the Phillies pull off Bichette and Pagés, even if they have to trade Bohm and/or Stott, that would be the shakeup to take a chance on.
All the Bo haters out there outraged that teams actually covet him and want to sign him.
ISOB- I don’t want him on the Cubs. I’d rather have Nico and Shaw and have Bo go somewhere else.
Mike– if you didn’t have Nico & Shaw would you have any interest? His age and production are just so good- when he’s healthy it’s almost guaranteed he’s Top 5 in the league in hits & BA. He has 20 HR power and doubles all day long. I don’t know what team couldn’t use a guy like this (unless you already have Hoerner.)
I can say honestly not really with a question mark. Nico is also basically the back up SS also which makes him more valuable because he is equally good on defense. If I was the Cubs I’d probably re sign him and according to the Mock Draft the Cubs at 25 are supposed to take a 2B who is the best pure hitter in the draft? Who knows but the Cubs still have like 6 SS’s and 2B in the system that could have a future so it’s not like it’s barren after Shaw and Nico. Yeah 20 HR’s is nice but Nico is more durable and maybe more valuable to me. Bo isn’t the Wiz Nico is on defense. They can probably re sign Nico and save a ton of cash which would appeal to Ricketts I’m sure. Plus he’s a fan favorite. Lots to walk away from.
Love his bat and I’m assuming he plays 2B because from everything I’ve read he doesn’t have the arm for 3B. Do they put him in LF and say goodbye to Marsh? If he does play 2B I hope they keep Stott and say goodbye to Bohm. I still think Stott could be a better hitter plus he’s a super smart player and fantastic baserunner and fielder.
#DakotaJoe
Its not only his arm. By OAA he has problems coming in on ground balls. Both those thing are pretty much the job description for 3B.
I wonder Von. Someone posted on the poll article that he just felt like a Phillie. I had the same thought. Random, no real logic, but I could see this happening.
Yes, Phillies please don’t let him leave without a contract signed lst. Isn’t that some Bichette?!?!???!?!?!?!?!
Jays fans mourn
With the report earlier today that he’s looking for 300mil, I don’t think the mourning period will last to long. Tucker becomes way more attractive at those prices.
Bo isn’t getting $300 million. He’s would need to get a 10-year deal and that’s not happening. I think he knows that. Tucker wants $400 million. Not sure he’s getting that. Prices will come down
Lol if true. Misses way too many games. Nice offensive player and meh defense. It would be generous to offer 6/150mil to be a 2B that is a table setter for stars on a big market team.
Erick: agreed. The winners curse is in full play. Someone is going to pay too much for Bo.
Honestly as a Jays fan I’m happy with their offseason so far. I’d think I’d rather have Okamoto for three years than Bo for seven (if we can’t have both.)
As a Phillies fan I like the idea of signing Bichette.
But to play 3rd? If they do sign Bichette, it seems like a trade of Stott (and/or Bohm?) is ideal. But the trade value in either of Stott or Bohm is currently not great.
Every article I read on the Phillies signing Bichette, has him playing third base, and Bohm being traded. That would never happen!! We’re the Phillies to sign Bichette, he will play second base. Bohm is not even in consideration to be traded. The Phillies are a heavy left handed hitting line – up. Bohm is currently their second best rh hitter, behind Turner. That would leave Stott, as the “odd man out”!! D D is way too smart to trade Bohm, and third base is “out of position”, for Bichette. That narrative is beyond foolish!!
Agree I see Stott as history if by some miracle DD decides to get crazy.
The Phillies are left handed heavy. Bohm is currently the second best rh hitter on the roster. Trading him makes no sense whatsoever, unless you sign Bregman. Bichette would play second base.
Can Stott play 3B?
The reason Bohm would be traded over Stott is financial. Bohm frees up more money. Stott is also one of the best defensive 2b around, so I do think Bo to 3rd is legitimate.
Not just financial. Phils still see some upside with Stott’s bat, and he does everything else really well already…plus is a great fit and controlled beyond next season.
Bohm is kinda’ who he is at this point.
What do you mean Bohm isn’t in consideration to be traded? I mean they’re looking to trade Bohm and put SOMEONE at 3rd. Maybe not Bichette, but it’s been out there since last off-season that they’ve looking to move him because of his maturity issues that the organization have had issues with. Apparently Rob Thompson has been managing that because if Bohm is not completely locked in, he struggles, which explains his streakiness. Biggest problem last off-season was the Phillies thought he was more valuable in a trade than every other team in the rest of the league 😂 Apparently they weren’t happy with any of the proposals they received back for him. So he’s absolutely still in consideration to be traded.
Can Bo throw well enough all the way from 3B? Seems unknown at best?
He’ll have to maximize the bounce throw for third. Justin Turner did it decently (enough) for much of his career.
I hope Bo Resigns with the Blue Jays
Apparently asking for a $300m contract now. Id love to have him back with the jays but no where near 300. Maybe 7-8 yrs 200 range.
He is not
Multiple reports of it so apparently yes he is
Yeah, he is asking for $300 mil.
If the Jays want him, the money will not be a barrier. Question is who’s playing chicken: the agent, the player, the Jays or other teams? The one team that has a proven place for him and is willing to spend this year is the Blue Jays. If they don’t do Bo, do they do Bregman instead? Or both? Still lots of money to be spent; who will spend it?
Who says $300 isn’t over 13 years? That’s completely doable and pretty much market value
If he is asking for 13 years, he has something wrong with him lol. He is already breaking down at 28, in 2-3 years he will be lucky to be playing 100 games a year. Injuries are already piling up for him, he is below average defensively,he has a plus bat, but average power and slow!
No need to do anything at catcher. Marchan is fine defensively calling a game. This is all they need for now. However this feels like Phillies trying to use media to push JT to sign (sadly) rather than actual interest in BB.
Marchan could not handle the workload, his career high is 71 starts at catcher. I think they’d have to make a trade.
When will he meet with the Ham Fighters?
Or the Foo Fighters at least.
If this somehow happens, make sure you trade Bohm and not Edmundo Sosa philly.
They would never consider trading Sosa, half of the reason for a hypothetical Bohm trade would be to save money. Trading Sosa doesn’t save them money.
Gonna miss him in TO
It’s a pipedream but Bo to the Angels would be lovely. Neto at SS, Bo at 2B, and Denzer Guzman at 3B. Makes the INF stronger defensively and it allows you to still give Christian Moore everyday ABs in LF if you want to have him out there or let him get experience at 3B in AAA if they really think he’s got a chance there. If not Moore in LF then you’ve got Trout in LF, Teodosio in CF, and Adell in RF and Meckler as the 4th OF. It’s a far better team defensively.
Adding Bo to an infield doesn’t make it stronger defensively. Your getting Bo was is offensive abilities.
There is no way Bo can play third. He needs to really muscle up on the ball to get even average velocity and his throws are all over the place.
If the Phillies are saying they want him at 3B they have not seen him play SS or are just posturing to get leverage on JT R.
The Phillies aren’t saying that. The baseball writers are speculating on Bichette playing third ( if signed). Anyone that really understands the Phillies, and is able to evaluate defensive placement, knows that Bichette would never be signed to play third base. Fortunately, D D, is probably having a good laugh, over this moronic speculation!!
Bichette had 6 throwing errors. That is 1/3 of what the worst had. That was CJ Abrams with 18.
Bichette’s 12 total errors at SS was less than half of De La Cruz’s 26 and about average for players with qualifying number of innings played at the position.
Bichette’s arm was not a problem. His arm strength was in the 36th percentile and his accuracy was slightly better than average. Overall his arm was average. His problem is that he has the range of a prototypical 1B. His range was the worst of all SS. do you remember that scene of the sloth at the DMV in Zootopia? That is Bichette at SS.
At 3B range is not as mission critical as it is at SS. Bichette would still be a slightly below average 3B on defense, but he would be serviceable.
Because range is far more important at 2B than 3B, his lack of range would impact him more there than playing 3B.
Skips.
You cant just go by errors. Bo is constantly bouncing throws and making the 1 B stretch. Vlad has saved his butt a ton of times. Those “non errors” will only be magnified into actual errors if he moves to 3B.
As someone who watched the majority of Jays games the reason Bo doesn’t have more errors is because Vlad is a defensive wizard at first. I can’t count the number of times Vlad did the full on splits to save one of Bo’s throws.
Yes, if it comes down to moving either Stott or Bichette to third base, Stott is a far better choice for the position. I still don’t think Bichette signs with Philadelphia though.
If you’re moving him off of short stop it will help him defensively to be at 2B which is where most teams would want him playing.
Correct
His Daddy played for the Angels and was rocking the Mullet too just like Bo
I really think that the Angels will find a way to bring Arenado back to southern California even if Moreno has to overpay. Arenado is a big name and Moreno has a history of opening his checkbook for past their prime big name players.
If the Angels want an expensive 3B the better option to try to aquire is McMahon. He’s a LHB which the Angels need and is a better defender than Nolan in this point in his career
The entire Phillies team has been assembled with free agents and they’re about to get another one it sounds like. I would be pissed if the Mets let them get Bichette with no resistance. And pls for goodness sakes sign Ranger. At least hurt the Phils that way.
Not sure Bo and the Mets are a fit anyway. SS/2b is covered. Pretty sure you got dudes covering 3rd too.
LF
You’re putting Bo in left? Bro’s arm is mid at best. Good luck with that. He’s not a fit.
I don’t think telling a SS he’s going to play LF is is the way to attract him to your team.
If Pat Burrell could play LF, Bo Bichette certainly can. Not saying he will but it can be done. I see Bichette at 2b and Stott moving to short and Turner to Center and Aiden Miller playing 3b.
Clearly not a fit for the Mets. 2b, ss, and 3rd are set. Giant hole in left, though.
@ShaqFoo,
You might want to check your math (or maths, if you’re British).
Dombrowski needs to stop looking in thrift stores long enough to sign him. I’ll believe it when it’s official. Phillies are always rumored for players, but we end up with AAA players
Triple-A is loaded with outfielders who are better than Garcia and his .270 OBP posted with the Rangers in 2025.
His age would really help the Phillies, many of whom are 32+ with decline imminent. Bichette is also a contact guy which the Phillies definitely need.
Phillies interest in Bichette perked up after Mattingly came in as Bench Coach. Wonder if Don recommended they look more seriously at Bo.
They apparently had an amazing relationship so would make sense
“Relationship”? Are you saying…. Nevermind
It’s not a heated rivalry relationship.
There was a shot of Mattingly sitting alone on the Jays bench after they lost the World Series and you can imagine Mattingly thinking, “Well that might have been my last shot.” And then Bo came over and hugged him. It was a nice moment.
100% this.
Stott can play second and SS so a trade to the Yankees would be ideal ad they can have him lead off. Only issue is he’s another LH bat.
Not super into Stott. He’s not much of an upgrade to Volpe, who I do believe in.
Stott is better than Volpe. Stott doesn’t strike out much, puts the ball in play, and moves runners along. He is outstanding defensively at second, and at least average at ss. Volpe is very inconsistent, and strikes out way too much.
Didn’t say he wasn’t, yet I dont think he’s all that. At least not a guy I’m trading for the Yankees.
salzilla, you must be the other guy besides aaron boone who believes in volpe.lol
We’ll see who lolz last.
Are my Mets going to continue to ignore he’s available? Does he have cooties or something?
What are you doing with him?
Playing him at first and batting him 3rd for the next 8 years. We have someone with zero experience playing there now and he can’t be worse than Pete. Bo’s glove is fine; it’s his arm and range that are awful. I think he’d be fine there, with some reps at DH.
Yeah I doubt Bo is agreeing to play first.
Far worse than cooties…he smells of maple syrup and pine. That’d totally kill any locker-room. ~
If he has the stanks, then I totally understand. haha
That would be an awfully expensive infield. Then you would have to consider many think Bichette’s arm is not strong enough at 3B.
I have a feeling this is just to generate more interest and urgency towards the Blue Jays.
The Phillies spend nothing on the outfield. That seems to be a point of pride for them.
Alec Bohm vs LHP in 2025: .818 OPS
There’s the platoon mate with Marsh in LF. Bohm would also log time at 3B and 1B and be a bench bat vs LHP late when not starting.
Bohm can’t play the outfield. Bichette would never be asked to play third base. If Bichette is added ( not likely), it has zero impact on Bohm.
Bo meeting with the Phillies sounds like nothings imminent with him. I like the dynamic with Mattingly there, so this could have legs. They’d have to move Stott or Bohm to make it work, but I think they’d have takers.
People need to stop with the 3rd base stuff.
He doesnt have the arm. He is a 2nd baseman at best.
With 300 million USD, Bo could buy a couple rocket launchers. End of issue.
I’m a huge Bo fan, but playing him at 3rd base is not a good idea. It would be smarter to play him at 2nd. It is a better fit arm wise, range wise & health wise. It would make more sense to put Bo at 2nd and trade Stott.
Stott has three of club control vs one for Bohm, plus Stott is the better all around player. Stott would be light hitting third baseman but I have no doubt he can handle third defensively.
Stott has far more trade value than Bohm. But I agree that the Phils would much rather keep Stott because he’s better than Bohm – 10.3 career bWAR compared 5.3 – cheaper than Bohm, and controlled for more years than Bohm.
The Phillies could probably work a trade of Bohm if they eat something like half his salary. But man, the money considerations are just getting wild for the Phils if they win a bidding war for Bichette, including the luxury taxes. I don’t want to think about ticket prices if it happens.
Bohm knocked in 97 runs in 2023, and 2024. He was trying to play though a cracked rib, before finally being put on the il last year. Your evaluation of Bohm, and the reality, are so far off. Fortunately, the Phillies have D D as the team President. He is an expert at player evaluation!!
RBIs? Seriously? That’s a team-dependent stat which proves less than nothing. Any reasonable evaluation system puts Stott ahead of Bohm as an all-round player.
I was surprised that Forbes estimates the Phillies ran a small profit in 2025. But they’ve already added big money with Schwarber and apparently are considering another big contract with Bichette. Maybe Middleton will try one more big dose of stupid money to win the World Series before the contention window slams shut.
OTOH the Phils are staring down Realmuto. So maybe stupid money only goes so far. At least the Phils sell out their park regularly and have a stable (for now) local TV contract.
It proves less than nothing to you. To everyone that understands baseball, a guy that knocks in almost 100 runs two years in a row ( and hits .280 +), is a very valuable hitter!!
I know it’s meaningless but it’s also interesting that of the three players (Bichette, Bohm, and Stott) Bo put up the lowest total fWAR over the past two seasons.
I love how you used 2 seasons considering Bo played through a lot of injuries 2 years ago and had the absolute worse season of his career. As long as we’re cherry picking numbers to suit arguments try using 3 of the last four and don’t include 2024 lol
‘proves less than nothing”! That’s adorable. Do you propose we stop tallying this useless stat? You are truly a forward-thinking fan. Ought we stop tallying runs scored as well?
@been
I’m so glad you chose to ignore the very first four words I wrote but before going off on somebody maybe take the time to read at least the first four words they write. Just in case the effort to go back is too much I’ll do the work for you.
“I know it’s meaningless…” You’re welcome. Try not to be miserable to strangers in the future just because they bring up quirky stats and you’re too lazy to read.
It’s meaningless because Bo was injured in 2024 and lost a month at end of 2025 when 3B coach greenlit a run to home against arm of Aaron Judge and Bo was hurt…
Bo’s bat is one of MLB’s top ones; when to swing, when not to, and when to burn up pitches and pitchers. His stats likely don’t show all the benefits (my eyes aren’t good enough any more to dig through stats).
Personally for Bo, does he want the top-end facilities the Blue Jays have in Dunedin and Toronto or the stadium built on a parking lot that the Mets and Phillies both offer… I’ve parked at 2b in both stadiums!
He is valuable he’s just not a home run hitter at third base but does a lot for a homer heavy lineup. If the Phillies don’t sign Realmuto, and if Turner moves to the outfield, a Bichette 2b, Stott Ss and Bohm 3b a possibility.
pingston: Yes I know it was meaningless. I was the first four words I wrote. Are people trying to gaslight me or is there a nationwide gas leak that is impairing comprehension?
I guess from now on I’ll write in very short sentences with monosyllabic (that means small) words.
ericl :That is what would happen!!
Who is better, Stott or Bohm?
I know. That is a rhetorical question. If Bichette is signed Stott stays and Bohm goes even if that means sliding the relatively light hitting Stott to 3B instead of Bichette.
At SS, Bichette’s problem has never been his arm, although it is on the average side in terms of strength. His issue on defense has been his range. That is not an issue is at 3B where less range is required.
The majority of Bo’s errors at short are throwing errors. Yes, his range isn’t great, but his arm has also been an issue
The Blue Jays have the inside medical info on Bo’s knees. Or they might have a sneaking suspicion after a couple knee injuries. Although Springer’s contract is up after this season and Bo could DH. Maybe they want to leave that position open moving forward. Could be the reason they haven’t signed him yet?
Don’t think so. I think it is more that they have want to get Barger and Clement at bats. Signing Bo makes that harder with the addition of Okamoto
One of the usual suspects. No surprise, and if he plays third rather than second, I would be surprised.
Reminds me of when the Reds tried to get Moose to play second, otherwise.
D D is too smart, nothing to worry about with Bichette playing third.
Maybe another star is coming off the market!
Bichette meets with the Korean league on Tuesday, the Japanese league on Wednesday and the Taiwan league on Thursday. He’s also considering a meeting with the NHL because they’re big in Canada.
Halfway seriously, this seems like a weird fit in the Phillies infield and a brutal hit to the Phillies pocketbook. But it’s a fun story. Stay tuned.
I seriously wonder if anyone has sought to measure “release time” or “infielder windup” for lack of a better name. I mean isn’t the arm speed actually measured by the speed of the ball as it travels and not from the time the ball is fielded until it reaches first base?
I am guessing that an infielder who fields cleanly and gets rid of the ball quickly might actually have less speed on his throws but still be effectively quicker.
Has any studies been done on this? (sort of like a catcher’s pop times I guess)
That is an excellent point. The problem with the defensive metrics that seems to be accepted, is it still depends on someone’s evaluation. How good ( or bad) of an opinion he has, produces the “accepted” fielding grade. Very few baseball men are really good at evaluating defensive ability. It is very complicated ( your point is right on), and only a very sharp baseball eye can discern the difference in many cases.
That’s not how defensive metrics are evaluated. It’s all done by computers that assess a player’s location and what part of his body is doing at every moment. There’s not some guy giving a thumbs up or down on every play.
All of the statcast data is just that, data. It’s not opinions.
I’m not sure there is an exact way to measure “quick hands” since every batted groundball will be caught at a different angle as defenders’ positioning will vary.
“Phillies would never play Bo at 3rd because of his arm”
Meanwhile they have a slower 3rd baseman with a weaker arm.
The comments here are ridiculous
The reason why you don’t move a normal sized guy ( big guy moves to third) off of short to third base, is you lose the value of both his range, and his arm. The move to second base, is a natural fit.
The Phillies are not a new entrant into the Bichette sweepstakes. They have been a major player from the beginning. Did anyone really think they were going to settle for another year of Alec Bohm? Especially at $10+ million!
Of players returning from the 2025 squad, only Bohm and Castellanos were below average players. Its always been a question of which player would be signed or acquired in trade to displace them.
Garcia replaced Castellanos even though Castellanos has not been released yet. For 3B will it be Bregman or Bichette?
While Bichette is best suited to 2B, since he has been able to play SS he can certainly play 3B. His bat would be a huge step forward for the Phillies offense and would lessen the blow of not resigning Realmuto.
As for Realmuto, he is rumored to want a deal with an AAV close to what he was making even though he will be 35 on opening day and has been on a consistent decline since 2023. Phillies ownership may step in and get him signed, but it doesn’t seem like there is a fit at the asking price. I am sure Phillies fans want him back.
The question is, who do you want Phillies fans, Bichette or Bregman?
Where would Aiden Miller be in all this? Apparently the idea was to have high priced superstars rounded out with young cheap talent, so either this is a smokescreen or we’re gonna empty the farm system like everyone warned DD would do.
If the ultimate plan is to dump underachieving Stott and Bohm for Miller and Bichette then ok, at least that’s a sound plan.
But if DD is gonna rack up payrolls and luxury taxes, empty the farm system and then split, ok but this better work and make it worth the 10 year black hole that’s gonna start in about 3 years.
@shack – This would not preclude Aidan Miller at all. As fans we tend to think in set terms, but the reality is that high quality depth will always find a way to the field. And GM’s look even more today for defensive versatility.
For 2026, Miller will be focused on making a push for the majors, as he only has a few games in AAA under his belt. The Phils already had him start to workout in LF as an interim step, and once 2027 rolls around who knows how they might decide to reconfigure things if Miller shows that he is ready.
Perfect world this works out and gets the Phillies out of their current cycle. I’d move Bohm somewhere and take what you can get. I’d move Stott to 3rd with an option of Aiden Miller taking over that position and making Stott the next available trade piece. If Stott/Otto/Sosa at 3rd works out then you can potentially shift Aiden Miller to LF and see how he develops there. I’m not concerned with losing a 35yr old catcher at this point. He can’t play forever and if he wants too much money it’s time to move forward. With all that said I think its a pipe dream the Phillies make this happen. It’s likely just a checking in orchestrated by the agent but his bat is exactly the type of bat we have been missing.
@Cambo
I like your idea except that in 2027 I like Turner going to LF and miller plays SS
I like Turner in the OF maybe center bc of his speed, Crawford in left (for now) it I feel he needs a vet waiting to step in if he’s not ready.
Miller at 3rd
Stott at ss
Bichette at 2b
Try to trade Bohm for Ivan Herrera for catching help.
If you don’t sign Bichette
The outfield is still Crawford in left
Turner in center
Infield just puts miller at short and Bohm and Stott keep their normal spots, resign Realmuto and Bader (Crawford insurance) and sign Seranthony Dominguez and Buehler to be in the rotation until Wheeler returns the move him to the pen as a long man or sixth starter. Those 4 guys would equal a Bichette salary maybe a little more.
Why would the Cardinals trade Herrera for Bohm? Pagés should be the Phillies target anyway, but it wouldn’t be for Bohm unless it’s a three-team trade involving prospects from the Bohm deal.
I don’t get the fascination with an oft injured former middle infielder limited to 2B or even 1B in the near future. He’s entering his age 28 season and it’s not as if he is putting up 5+ WAR seasons.
Bichette did put up 5.9 bWAR in 2021 and 4.8 bWAR in 2023, his two all-star seasons. 2024 was a disaster but 2025 saw a partial return to that all-star form. And 28 is relatively young for a free agent with that kind of pedigree. So I can see why multiple clubs regard him as a bright shiny object.
Right now his agents seem to be doing a good job of drumming up a bidding war. Will it result in the mega-contract Bichette apparently wants? It only takes one owner who just has to scratch that free-agent itch.
He’s NOT oft-injured. Injured in 2024 and then hurt in 2025 on a bad coaching call.
He’s been very reliable for the Jays, especially with his bat.
As much as I like him as a Jay, Bo is a glorified DH who will only get to the rumored $300M (Something fishy with that number anyway. It’s over 40% HIGHER than the highest projected terms I can find.) if a bidding war erupts with multiple teams.
And he might be the top FA left who would LEAST inspire such a discussion.
I’m all for him returning as a Jay but I think anything above $160-170 M sees him go elsewhere. Philly would be a good place for him. Actually, anywhere outside the AL East would be fine …if he’s not re-signing with T.O.
I could see this happening, despite all the hurdles.
It’s so Philly to get an aging bat, with sub speed and defence under a long term commitment.
He would be great there for the next 3 years and maybe give them a chance to win their division. They would need to do a lot more to topple LA however. But that’s why they play the games.
I’ll miss Bo as a Blue Jay, he was my favourite.
Well, Dombrowski is not stupid.
But….
If he was really smart…..
He’d package Castellanos with a couple prospects and send him back to Detroit, saving beaucoup bucks; thus allowing him even more fun, spending money on top MLB free agents…..
He’s not playing 3rd. He’s a 2B as this stage and will be paid like a good 2B, which is like 8/200 at the most. Anything longer or more then that will be a very bad contract.
That Phillies was great but flawed, the window is closed
Yeah meet up at McDonald’s or something and hammer out a deal.
Do it, Dave. Just freaking do it.
Then let JT go.
I’d love him back in Toronto, that bat was so elite! He might have the oldest body ever as a 27 yo. But brother can hit!
as a Phillies fan I love seeing this but now I’m gonna be looking for updates all weekend and on Monday. I know it says they aren’t meeting until Monday but my brain and fandom is gonna make me check just in case.lol
maybe he can discover for us what a Phille even is.
Without the protection of the climate controlled dome from Canadian winters, can he survive in all weather Philadelphia?
In Toronto he’s a star, and in the euphoria of a WS run a large contract seems right but when we come back down to earth I don’t see it that way anymore.
300mil is twice as much as I was expecting. Also his running was already slowing down, even before the injuries. Maybe a 3-4 year deal as the bat is the only thing that’s been reliable.
A long term deal is going to be a burden. If you’re a Phillies fan then you’re going to get a great player (when healthy) but you should be hoping for a lot of opt out and buy out options
Alternate headline- Red Sox fail to sign any free agents of consequence. They prefer to save money for bid in NBA expansion team.
Bichette would be a great fit in the lineup. They could bat him fourth, giving protection to Harper, or they could bat him higher in the lineup allowing Schwarber to move down to the cleanup spot. I don’t think he is worth $300 million but I would go to 5/150 or 6/175.
Test test test
Phillies already won the offseason with Donnie Baseball joining their couching staff.🥇 😎
With that said, yeah, definitely grab Bichette and move on from both Bohm and Realmuto (not that I’d be upset if they retained him somehow after adding Bichette).
A move like this, along with the acquisition of Garcia in the outfield (his defense alone, which apparently remains amongst the best at his position, is enough for me to value him. If he can be even average at the plate I’ll be be happy) are the types of moves they need to make to shake things up as opposed to running out that same old offense.
I’m also looking forward to how Crawford handles center and some of the other young guys that may get opportunities during the season this year.
The starting pitching has me slightly concerned given the unknowns surrounding Wheeler and how he may perform upon return from injury. Plus, they need to hope Nola, if nothing else, performs better than last year. And in addition to those two concerns, I don’t really know what may occur with Painter. I have researched his 2025 marks too closely, but as best I’ve gathered he didn’t exactly have an inspiring year.
I know they still have a few solid options in place. But it’d be great if the three starters mentioned above perform up to past expectations.
If they sign Bo, they still need a catcher and RF. You can’t trade Bohm for Both.
This deal makes little sense unless they are desperate to get rid of Bohm.
Now if Turner is willing to accept he’s now an outfielder, I can make this work.
I’m not sure how I feel about Boem potentially at 3B for the Mariners. I guess it all would likely come down to prospect cost. I don’t really want to spend a ton of prospects for 1 year of a just OK player. But, he’d be a nice stop gap at 3B until Colt Emerson is ready to take over. But, again, only of the price is right.
If you do sign Bichette, please, pretty please – tell Mattingly to trim those darn sideburns already!
