Heyman On Upton, Hanley, Twins, Lannan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 23, 2012 at 2:46pm CDT

Arizona GM Kevin Towers could wait until the offseason to trade Justin Upton instead of moving him within the next eight days. A patient approach makes sense for the Diamondbacks if it allows them to maximize their return, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes. Here are some more notes from Heyman…

  • One general manager doesn’t know where he’d play Hanley Ramirez on defense. "He's not a third baseman, he's not a shortstop anymore. I wouldn't know where to hide him," the GM told Heyman.
  • The Twins don’t seem interested in trading Josh Willingham, but a long list of teams would have interest if Minnesota makes the outfielder available.
  • John Lannan made a successful spot start for Washington over the weekend, but it’s clear he’s not in the team’s long-term plans. Heyman suggests it’d be best if the Nationals can find a way to trade the left-hander, who earns a $5MM salary in 2012.

Unless the Nats acquire a pitcher (without trading Detwiler) they’re probably looking for Lannan to be the 5th starter when/if Strasburg is shut down.

The only way Lannan is moved is if it is for another starter.. Trust him much more than CMW

Would be interesting to know which GM thinks Ramirez isn’t a SS “anymore” since most marlins fans never thought he was worth anything defensively at the position to begin with.

If Ramirez would actually put some effort into his game and work, he should be sent to Winter Ball and learn to play a corner OF (LF preferably) as that is about the best place to hide his glove on the field. DH would be another position, then he would have to learn to hit as well and this coming from a one time Ramirez supporter.

IOW? he needs a change of scenery.. he took his friendship status with loria and fredi gonzalez for granted and just got lazy.. Nothing is helping now.. Not even Trader jack mcKeon could get anything out of him, Ramirez would just go over his head.

I personally think Lannan could be a fit for the Twins. They could use another starter and Lannan is one of them.

Maybe, but not for Span. That would be an insanely one sided deal for the Nats.

Where is there left to put Hanley? You could try second, but he might have the same issues. You could try the outfield, but will he actually run after flyballs consistently? He doesn’t hit enoguh to play first anymore. He’s not a catcher. He might have to be a DH, unless he’s going to show the work ethic ot be a good outfielder.
It’s really pathetic that he still manages to be something of a good baseball player (around 3 WAR), but he squanders talent better than probably anyone else ever. He should be coasting to 5+ WAR almost every season.

Nobody’s going to pick up Lannan’s salary. If Rizzo wants him gone so bad eat his salary and flip him and some prospects for another pitcher/catcher.

If the Jays can swing some major deal that includes Josh Johnson or Anibal Sanchez, I’m all for it (I think it was reported that all but Stanton are/were made available a week ago by the Marlins).

As long as they don’t extend him, so the Red Sox can sign him in the offseason I’m fine with it.

The Nats must be looking for something more than fodder for Lannan. I have a hard time the Jays wouldn’t pick him up for his full salary in exchange for some pieces and parts or a PTBNL, a la the Frasor trade with the CWS. Alvarez needs to be sent down ASAP, and frankly if Romero wasn’t the ‘ace’ he’d probably join him.

I want to know about Liriano! Are the Twins going to trade Liriano?
The Twins will not trade Willingham, although he is probable their best trade chip.
It is interesting to note that the Braves and Dodgers never really looked into Liriano.
I would rather have him instead of Dempster or Garza.

Lol… I’m a Dbacks fan and would love Headley, but he is definitely not enough for Upton. Maybe the Pads could obtain some of the top prospects the Dbacks would net from Upton if they sent Headley to ARI (in a 3 team deal), but I don’t see anything working out.
