• The Rockies have quietly played some respectable baseball over the last month or so, giving them a chance of avoiding the single-season loss record. I wouldn’t say the team is exactly on the right track since the organizational structure will always hold the Rockies back, but there are a few slivers of hope for the future

• would you consider giving Berrios a rest with an IL stint now that Bieber is ready to pitch?

• As Billy Eppler could tell you, teams can’t just put a guy on the IL for non-specific injury reasons.  I suspect that when Bieber is ready, the Jays will just go to a six-man rotation to give everyone extra rest days.
• Keep in mind that these plans can always turn on a dime.  The Phillies thought they had a six-man rotation all lined up just over 24 hours ago, before the news broke about Wheeler

• Mark: Good evening. Is Jacob Marsee a present and future fixture in the Marlins outfit rls?

• Based on speed and defense alone, it’s looking this way.  The book on Marsee was whether he can hit enough to stick as a regular outfielder, and the early returns have been obviously incredible.
• Nobody should go crazy over an early-career hot streak, since Marsee “probably” isn’t the next Willie Mays.  But he’s absolutely doing enough to win himself a job for the foreseeable future

• Tell me why I shouldn’t be completely disheartened by our performance this weekend. Should’ve swept the Brewers, instead looked like we never played baseball before

• Winning one game against the hottest team in baseball is no mean feat.  I think the Reds just caught the wrong team at the wrong time, hence the series loss.

• The A’s couldn’t fix Cusick either as a starter or reliever.  Why would they claim his former college teammate Shuster who was also a Braves #1 pick the year before ?  Shuster has better control, but doesn’t throw hard enough so what are they thinking ?.

• It costs the Athletics almost literally nothing to claim Shuster and take a look at him.  For a rebuilding team in need of pitching, why not take a flier on a guy and see if you can find a fix?

• Red Sox will need another higher end starter in the off season. Of Gore, Ryan and Alcantara who do you think makes the most sense for them if they can swing a deal?

• The Sox and Twins had some talks about Ryan already, with reports indicating that the two sides weren’t particularly close on a deal.  However, it could be that those talks laid some groundwork, and perhaps at least gave both sides some idea of what the other wants in such a deal.  The Twins were reportedly prioritizing MLB-ready talent in trades, and while Boston wasn’t willing to make such a move at the deadline, their perspective might be changed during the winter.

• Do you think Nolan Schanuel has a future ceiling of a Mark Grace like career?

• I’m going to say no, not out of disrespect to Schanuel but more out of respect to Grace’s career.  Grace was a terrific player for a long time, and it would be a huge success for Schanuel and the Angels if he can get even in the ballpark of a Grace-esque career

• When do you think Kevin McGonigle will get to DET and why?

• It would be quite surprising if he isn’t in the big leagues before 2026 is over

• Do you think the Reds pass the Mets and make the WC?

• The two teams have a three-game series in Cincinnati in September and looms large.  The Reds are up 2-1 so far this season for tiebreaker purposes.

  I think the Reds haven’t been fully able to capitalize on the Mets’ slide to this point, yet they have more momentum than New York at this point.  On paper, the Mets should be able to get it together, but the chalk hasn’t amounted to anything for them over the last several weeks.  Frankly, I wouldn’t even count out teams like the Cardinals, Giants, or D’Backs from making a late run just yet.

• Also, every Mets has undoubtedly noticed that the Braves have quietly been red-hot over the last week

• Dylan Cease has had a nightmare platform year. Does he sign a one-year pillow contract with a team that’s good at fixing pitchers? Do you think he can get a second-year player option?

• This looks like the classic case of a Scott Boras short-term contract with multiple opt-outs.  Cease’s secondary metrics are better than his ERA indicates, but you’re right that he isn’t exactly heading into free agency on a high note, unless he really turns it on in September.

• Mike Elias has led the Orioles to 3 winning seasons in a row for the 1st time since the 70’s. I think his leash has to be longer than this offseason. Are the cries to fire him overblown or are you getting into that camp?

• Some serious questions need to be asked about the Orioles’ roster-building, but overall, I lean more towards 2025 being a “year from hell” than a sign that this team is going to spiral back into long-term irrelevance.

  My guess is that Elias has earned more time from ownership, but keep in mind that Rubenstein is still something of a wild card.  Maybe he has a mind to hire his own GM to see what a fresh voice can do with all of the talent within the organization.

• put aside the potential seriousness of the situation; big picture we all want wheeler just to get healthy. But purely baseball, if he’s out for an extended period or the rest of the yr, does that cost the Phils making the playoffs with their inconsistent offense?

• Philly is a virtual lock to make the playoffs, but losing Wheeler obviously is a huge blow to their chances of actually winning a championship.

• Does the Dodgers’ sweep of the Padres say more about the status of the Dodgers or Padres? Or neither?

• It’s another sign that the Dodgers aren’t going anywhere.  All the momentum in the world seemed to be on SD’s side going into the series, but now the Dodgers have clinched the season series in emphatic fashion.

• Assuming the Jays rotation stays injury free (big if of course) who are the going to the odd men out in the postseason?  Presume Lauer will go to the pen despite the impressive season but who else of the other five will be dropped?

• Should Jays fans pump the breaks on presuming Bieber and Scherzer are locks for the 3 man rotation in Oct?  Shane is still recovering from TJ and Mad Max is a thumb injury away from the 60 day IR.

• The Blue Jays are in the odd position of both having “too many” starters on paper, and also having Gausman as the only one of those six guaranteed to be a playoff starter.  As noted in these messages, Bieber hasn’t pitched a big league game in over 16 months, Scherzer is an injury risk, Lauer is the easiest to transition to a relief role, and Berrios/Bassitt have had their shares of shaky outings.

  The good news is that the Jays have several weeks to figure this out.  Perhaps the situation solves itself in a positive way (two starters get red-hot in September and become obvious locks for a playoff rotation) or in a negative way (injuries, struggles, etc.)

• Reports indicate that the new owners are likely to keep everything intact in the baseball ops department, and with good reason.
• If the Rays actually let Neander or Cash go, both would find new jobs within minutes.

• What does my extension look like?

• Neto is a Super Two player, and will only be arb-eligible for the first of four times this upcoming offseason.  So with team control already established through 2029, the Angels might not feel the need to lock him up just yet.

• Trout is the big exception, of course, but his situation is obviously very different from Neto’s.  The Halos’ other extensions have been mostly shorter-term deals either covering arb years or with veteran players.

  With this in mind, it will interesting to see if the team tries to extend Neto, as he has done a lot to make himself look like a building block for LAA

Cleveland

• What would you like to see us do in the offseason? Has it just been some bad injury luck with prospects this year? Delauter and Brito were supposed to be big features of this team.

• The Guardians have around $37.2MM on the books for next season (thanks to RosterResource!) and that isn’t counting arb raises or whatever might happen with Clase’s contract if he is suspended.

  I realize that expecting the Guards to suddenly break the bank is a fool’s errand, but investing in at least one proper everyday player who can legit hit, and one solid starting pitcher would go a long way.  The Gimenez trade alone cleared so much long-term money off Cleveland’s books that they can reinvest that cash into some much-needed hitting help.

• Basallo is a ML’er now. Shouldn’t there be another 10-12 prospects called up now that we’re past the middle of August?

• No doubt.  Even going into my usual weekend duties, I was fully expecting to be writing at least one “Orioles call up Basallo” or “Orioles call up Beavers” post, for instance.

• What direction do you think the Twins will go in 2026?

• The front office will be trying to contend, but they very likely won’t have much (or any) spending room again.  Lopez’s contract makes him a prime candidate to be traded, but Ryan is inexpensive enough that I think he’d only be moved if another team offers the moon and stars.

Brewers GM Arnold

• Chances I trade Peralta this off-season?

• I wouldn’t be entirely shocked since that’s just how the Brewers roll.  But, Peralta at $8MM is a such a huge bargain that it carries particular value to a Brewers team working within a limited budget.  As we saw with Adames, the Brewers are willing to let a talented player just reach free agency, and I suspect this might be the case here with Peralta.

  Milwaukee’s pitching depth perhaps adds more fuel to the idea that Peralta could be dealt, but there’s a difference between depth and the certainty that Peralta offers as a surefire frontline guy

• Do the rangers have a legit shot or should we look forward to the off season? What is the rangers current cbt number for next season?

• Texas has a lot of money off the books, and RosterResource has them close to $100MM under the 2026 tax line.  So that shouldn’t be an issue, even if it isn’t quite clear yet if they’ve ducked under the line for 2025.

  And as for their playoff chances now, things are getting ugly.  While the Yankees have their issues and nobody in the wild race is exactly on fire, I think the Rangers’ struggles have put them too far behind the eight ball

• Falter is arb-controlled through 2028, so he’s a long-term piece.  Between Ragans, Wacha, Lugo, Cameron, Bubic, and now Falter and a couple of others, KC has plenty of rotation depth.

• Thoughts on whether you think the Twins fire sale was the right call? I’m a twins fan and I thought every trade was good except Varland. This years team was headed nowhere

• They traded mostly impending free agents, and I think moving Correa was a wise move in the big picture.  So from a pure baseball perspective, I get the logic of the trades, especially since they brought in a lot of young talent and a lot of MLB-ready players.

  But it doesn’t erase the fact that it’s unfortunate that it came to this, since this Twins team seemed to have all the momentum in the world coming off the 2023 season.  And, these kind of payroll cuts are yet another morale-killer to a fanbase that has had to put with a lot.

• Is Eric Lauer under Jays control in 2026?

• Yes, he has one remaining year of arbitration eligibility.

• Has any underperforming baseball player like me ever turned down a large player option to have more opportunity to play elsewhere? The handwriting is on the wall for me: I’m going to be buried behind many more talented starting pitchers if I say in Queens.

• Montas is surely not opting out and leaving $17MM on the table.  His next contract wouldn’t be worth near that much.

• Do Giants look to add another big bat this offseason to go with Devers do you think?

• Probably.  Though, it isn’t a great look that the offense is still such a problem even after such heavy investments in Adames, Chapman, and Lee

• I agree with Darragh’s take that Story will likely stay in his contract.  Maybe if Story goes scorching hot in September he might consider it, but it is much more likely that he stays in Boston rather than risk free agency

• Expectations were so high for the Braves and Orioles that they’re certainly the biggest disappointments of this group.

• Rotation help is always more valuable but relievers are cheaper and (relatively) easier to find.  Starters have to be the first priority since if you can lock down at least one rotation spot, it has a good cascading effect on everything else

• What team would want to take on Profar’s contract, and before you say “the Padres,” remember that they have payroll limitations of their own.  Signing Tucker to a mega-deal would be out of character for the Braves, and seemingly unlikely for a team that made a point of getting under the tax line last winter

• What do the Dbacks do this offseason. They moved their pending FAs, but feels like a full rebuild would be a weird move.

• They’re not rebuilding.  They’ve got a good amount of money off the books and, while their payroll be lower than it was in 2025, they’ll still have some money to spend on upgrades.

  Fixing the pitching is the obvious priority, since they’ll need at least one starter and multiple relievers.

• With Stearns in NY, who is the main brain behind the Brewers success?

• This kind of consistent year-after-year succeeds needs a lot of people to keep the wheels turning rather than just one singular executive.

  Obviously the Mets made a point of recruiting Stearns and the Cubs hired Counsell away, but it’s interesting that you haven’t really seen the kind of coaching/front office hiring exodus from Milwaukee that you’ve seen with other teams making a point to hire people away from the Rays, Guardians, Dodgers, etc.

• DeLauter might be out for the season due to his hamate surgery, and the Guardians probably don’t see any reason to rush Bazzana just yet.
• There does seem to be a decent chance Bazzana is Cleveland’s Opening Day second baseman, if the Guardians want to make a bold PPI move

• Soderstrom in LF has been dreadful… does the presence of Rooker and emergence of Kurtz block him from meaningful MLB at bats ?

• The public defensive metrics have him at +1 DRS and +2 OAA.  The Fielding Bible people don’t exactly have him on their radar, but if Soderstrom can provide that kind of passable defense, he’ll work out just fine in left field

• They’re on administrative leave until Aug. 31, so I doubt we’ll hear anything before then. My guess — and it is a total guess, just based on how prior league investigations regarding a variety of topics have played out — is that on 8/31, the league just announces that the leave has been extended through the end of the regular season (or possibly through the World Series), and they’ll quietly continue the investigation with an eye toward announcing discipline in the offseason.

• After Aug. 15, players no longer have enough days on the calendar to exhaust their rookie status this year. I’m guessing that on 8/20 or so, Chandler is magically ready for the majors, and he’ll then head into ’26 in position to break camp on the roster and possibly net the Pirates a draft pick via the Prospect Promotion Incentives, depending on ROY voting.

• I’d be very surprised if they don’t make a real effort, yes. Cease seems likelier to go, between the two

• Look ahead to next year for the Brewers — what might they be seeking in free agency? Do they go with Vaughn at first? Durbin at third? Ortiz at Short? Wait for the middle infield rookies to mature? If they spend any money (always a big if), what night they seek out?

• I just don’t expect them to look to spend all that much. Vaughn has all but staked his claim to the 1B job in 2026 with his absurd turnaround. I could see them looking for some left-side infield help, but there aren’t many great options out there in that regard anyhow aside from Bregman or Suarez, I suppose, and the Brewers aren’t ponying up for either.I imagine they’ll be open to adding a veteran starter on a one-year deal and they’ll look for some bench/bullpen upgrades who won’t break the bank. They’ll at least listen to offers on Freddy Peralta, since he’s only signed one more year and that’s just what the Brewers do. But in general, I just wouldn’t get your hopes up for a big-money acquisition. It’s not how they typically operate, and based on how much success they have every year, I’m not really sure it’s how they need to operate.

• He’s been better than I’d have expected, but it’s below-average strikeout levels with good-not-great command and pretty poor chase/swinging-strike rates. A genuine No. 3 mid-rotation arm would surprise me. He feels more like a borderline No. 4/5 guy. He’s having a pretty similar season to Mitchell Parker’s 2024, granted with a lot more grounders (but also more walks and hit batters)

• Does Zac Gallen get a QO next year? Fair to assume King and Woodruff do, injuries notwithstanding?

• All three will get qualifying offers.

• Tell me I’m not dumb enough to Luis Arreaz to a long-term contract…No power, doesn’t walk, below average defense and speed… money could be spent in other places, right?

• I’ve gotten a bunch of questions from Padres fans about this, seemingly because one Bleacher Report writer predicted Arraez will get something like six years and $90MM?I think Arraez’s contract will come in at maybe half that — I find most of that opinion piece’s predictions to be pretty unrealistic in one direction or another — and I don’t expect the Padres to be the ones to make a big push to re-sign him.

• Do you think Verlander actually pitches next season? He says he plans to, but the issue would be what team would want him? Posey said at the press conference for JV he hopes to resign him in the offseason. Do you think thats still true?

Steve Adams

• Verlander had a rocky start but has a 4.02 ERA, 20 K% and 7.5 BB% over his past 16 starts. I don’t see why teams would think he’s incapable of pitching another year. If he wants to pitch, someone will sign him to a one-year deal. It’d probably come in under this year’s $15MM salary, but the idea that he’s cooked or something feels more like people reacting to his 1-9 record, which is more an indictment on the Giants’ roster than on Verlander’s ability.

• Does Trent Grisham get a QO??

• It’d be defensible, but I lean against it. The Yankees are luxury payors, so they’d only get a pick after the 4th round if he rejected and signed elsewhere. That’s not especially great compensation, and they probably don’t want Grisham taking up a $22MM salary on day one of the offseason when they already have Judge, Dominguez and Spencer Jones in the outfield mix.

• The Braves will have $32 million to spend when Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias depart via free agency.  What moves do you think Alex Anthopoulos will make this Winter?

Steve Adams

• That’s not really true. I mean, it’s true that the $16MM salaries of Ozuna and Iglesias are off the books, but all of that money will be eaten up organically by raises elsewhere on the roster.Spencer Strider’s salary jumps from $4MM to $20MM. Reynaldo Lopez goes from $8MM to $14MM. Jurickson Profar from $12MM to $15MM. (Well, he only got half that salary this year with the suspension, so technically from $6MM to $15MM). Aaron Bummers goes $3.5MM to $9.5MM.

  The arb class is small, with several non-tender candidates (Kelenic, Eli White, Dane Dunning, Nick Allen) — but Dylan Lee will get a raise from just over $1MM to something between $2-3MM as well.

• The Braves have $159MM on next year’s books, and that’s before picking up options on Chris Sale, Pierce Johnson, Ozzie Albies and Tyler Kinley. That’ll bump that $159MM figure to $191MM. ($193MMish, after accounting for Dylan Lee)
• The Braves don’t really spend aggressively in free agency anyhow, so I’m not sure it matters a ton. I’d expect them to be more active on the trade market as they look for upgrades at shortstop and perhaps a bat to cycle through the OF/DH

RoxTalks

• Does Cody Bellinger pick up his player option? My gut says yes based on his slightly lackluster batted ball profile, but he’s had an above average year at the dish and at multiple positions in the field so I could see him declining it and seeking more on the open market.

• No chance he picks it up. It’s a net $20MM decision for him, and he’ll trounce that mark in free agency.
• Bellinger has been an above-average bat for three years now. The injury is behind him. He’s playing good defense at multiple spots. He’ll be 30 for most of next year. He should pursue — and will likely find — something like a five-year deal.

• What are the chances Mets resign Alonso now that he’s soon to be the franchise’s all time HR leader?

Steve Adams

• The Mets didn’t want to sign him long-term last offseason, and I don’t see any reason they’d be more excited about doing so now that he’s a year older. I expect Alonso to decline his player option, hit the open market (this time without a QO), and sign elsewhere for something like $100-110MM over four years.If the same cycle plays out, where he goes out seeking a massive deal and is left standing in February, maybe the Mets will circle back with another opt-out deal.

• Adolis Garcia DFA candidate soon? He’s been absolutely brutal this season and the team would be better without him on the roster. He’ll be non tendered so why not see if someone picks up the salary

• I don’t expect him to be DFA, no — though I wouldn’t be totally stunned if they put him on outright waivers later in the month to see if someone will claim him.I do agree he’s a non-tender candidate, but they can run him through waivers without committing to cutting him. If he clears, they can hang onto him and see if he catches fire in September and restores a little trade juice. They’re stuck paying him either way, so may as well hang onto him and see if there’s any sort of market early in the offseason.

• Do the Phillies promote Crawford after Aug 15?  He absolutely deserves the look; Batting .330 and .416 OBP in 94 games.  And if so, what does the OF look like with Bader, Marsh, Kepler in the mix and heavy on LH hitters?

• Have we ever seen a contending team make an acquisition blunder like the Cubs did with Mike Soroka? Velo was trending down on a pitcher who has an injury history and they made the trade anyways?

• The velo dip was pretty notable, but the Cubs were obviously comfortable enough with their review of his medicals.I don’t think their big blunder was necessarily in acquiring Soroka at all, but rather in having him stand as the only real addition to a rotation that’s in glaring need of more help.

  The Cubs (and Tigers and several others) seem paralyzed by the notion of giving up top prospects in a trade. The entire industry as a whole — Padres, Mariners and maybe the Phillies excluded — seems to be in this boat. Front offices are so protective of prospects that it’s reached the point of absurdity, in my view.

  The number of guys who’ve gone from untouchable to sell-low trade chips and eventual DFA fodder is staggering. The MLB front office groupthink regarding prospects is so over the top.

• Tanner Houck a non-tender?

• I lean that way. I could see keeping him if he’d been good when healthy and then had the TJS, but he was maybe the worst starter in the league. Obviously, the elbow health (or lack thereof) probably contributed to that, but you’d be tendering him for something like $4.5MM to $5MM knowing he won’t pitch next year and knowing he’d command the same salary in arb the following season. If Boston feels Houck’s 2027 is worth two years and $9-10MM, I suppose that’s defensible. (2024 Houck certainly was, obviously) But a non-tender seems reasonably likely to me.

• I’m sure they’ll make some effort, but I don’t know that the lack of high-end 1B prospects in their system means much. The free agent market this year will have Ryan O’Hearn, Pete Alonso, Paul Goldschmidt, Rhys Hoskins, Luis Arraez and, of course, Naylor. Trade market could have Nate Lowe, Ryan Mountcastle, Triston Casas, Alec Burleson and others.
• So sure, if they like Naylor well enough, absolutely make a run at keeping him. But I don’t think it’s any sort of colossal misstep if they decide they don’t want to go 4-5 years on him and pivot to something shorter-term.

I have a hard time seeing this bullpen making a deep run, but they have a knack for getting high-end performance out of some unexpected relievers. Maybe they can get Rafael Montero back to 2022 form.I don’t really see it, personally, but I’m always open to being proven wrong — which happens plenty! I think they should’ve done more.

• Torres was 27 this past offseason. Andujar will be 31 in March. And his rate stats are largely attributable to being shielded from RHP to an extent. Accepting a QO for him would also immediately give him the all-time AAV record for a reliever. Nice little perk!

  It wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world to make the offer, but $22MM (or thereabouts) is more than he’d get on a one-year deal in free agency, so I feel like they’ll probably pass on doing so. Good as he’s been, I’m not sure even the Red Sox believe he can suddenly sustain a 7% walk rate after sitting 14.5% or higher in each of the four prior seasons.

• How big of a return can Alex get for Sean Murphy this off-season? I assume Walcott is not happening? Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?!

• No, not getting Sebastian Walcott for three years of Sean Murphy at $45MM. It’s nice value, sure, but it’s not like there’s $50MM of surplus value there or anything.I’m not entirely convinced they trade him. Could just go Baldwin/Murphy at DH/C next year.

  In general, while I think the remaining Murphy money is fine, I don’t expect that the Braves would be able to command any true top-tier prospects if they move him. Swapping him for a big league SP on a team that has pitching depth and needs C help has some merit though.

• I don’t think re-signing him is out of the question. They have $188MM on next year’s books but only $142MM the following season. They’re nearing the end of the Springer and Gausman deals. Bichette has been open about how he’d love to stay in Toronto and spend his career playing alongside Vlad.He’s probably playing his way into a contract upwards of $200MM, but the Jays can stomach that. Would be easier if they hadn’t taken on so much of that Andres Gimenez deal. Whoops.

• Absolutely.  Seattle might be the best overall team in baseball right now, give or take the Brewers.  So many other contenders have a clear weakness or two, but not the M’s (on paper)

• Which is more likely a Acuna extension or signing Bo?

• Acuna’s current deal keeps him under team control through 2028, as the Braves have club options (worth $17MM each) for both 2027-28.  Call me crazy, but I think the Braves will be picking those up. 🙂

  As such, the team doesn’t really need to prioritize an extension this offseason.  Obviously the Braves have been as proactive as anyone in locking players up, but there isn’t any immediate urgency with Acuna.  Plus, Atlanta might want to wait until Acuna has a fully healthy season before considering a second extension.

• So I guess by default, this makes Bichette slightly more likely, even if Anthopoulos traditionally doesn’t aim for those kind of pricey free agent deals.

White Sox Fan

• How many years away are we from competing? Cam we compete every year instead of every so often?

• I haven’t loved everything the Sox have done in their rebuild, but they’ve gotten a decent amount of young talent in the fold.  The AL Central’s inconsistency could help the White Sox contend perhaps slightly sooner than expected, but I wouldn’t expect much from the next 2-3 seasons.

• Is my future at first like Harper?

• Judge’s solid defense is the most underrated part of his game.  He is a plus right fielder, and while he didn’t do much defensively in center field last year, the fact that he could do it regularly was alone impressive (and helpful to New York’s overall lineup construction).
• Barring injury concerns, I think the Yankees are fine with Judge in right field for the foreseeable future.  Especially if they’re keeping 1B earmarked for Ben Rice.

• Do you think if a miracle occurred and the Pirates offered Paul Skenes a market value contract that he would sign with them despite their annual second-division status?

• Only Skenes knows the answer to this for sure.  He’s made a solid amount of money in his career already via signing bonus and endorsements, so he could choose to bet on himself if he has doubts about Pittsburgh’s ability to compete.

  However, betting on yourself and turning down a $200MM (or probably more) extension offer are two different things.  If the Pirates actually did go all in on making Skenes their guy and offering him a mega-deal, I would lean towards him taking it, just to lock in some generational wealth for himself.

• I expect Williams to pursue one-year contracts, with the idea that he’ll rebound in 2026 and line himself up for a bigger multi-year deal during the 26-27 offseason.

  For something like a one-year, $10MM deal, lots of teams will be willing to sign Williams.  He has major change of scenery potential, and most of his peripheral numbers (save for his barrel rate) are still quite good

• Lopez is the only one that would actually represent big cash savings, since the others are still pretty inexpensive as arb-eligible players.  Ryan in particular is a big bargain, earning only $3MM in 2025 and controlled for two more years.

  With this in mind, Lopez may be the likeliest of the group to be dealt, with Jeffers next just because he’s only controlled through 2026.  But even with Jeffers, he could be retained just because Vazquez is also a free agent this year and is certainly not being re-signed.

Yankees Hot Take

• Volpe’s future is at second base due to his lack of arm strength and Lombard knocking on the door, right?

• A move to 2B could indeed stop Volpe’s downward slide defensively.  But, if he continues to scuffle at the plate, he’ll need to be a premium defender (wherever he plays) to retain his spot in the everyday lineup.

M. Betts

• Will I be back in the OF next season?

• Betts has been very good defensively at shortstop, so I’d guess he stays put.  Whether or not his lack of hitting is directly tied to the position change is unclear.  Betts and the Dodgers probably want to run it back and see what happens in a year when Betts isn’t waylaid by a brutal illness during the spring.

• Will this be the season that costs Aaron Boone his job?

• Boone’s next contract extension hasn’t actually kicked in yet, as it was signed in February and covers the 2026-27 seasons.

  If the Yankees fully collapsed and missed the playoffs entirely, that might be enough to force ownership to make some kind of major move like a managerial change.  For as much loyalty as Boone has received, it might be that a culture change is needed in the clubhouse

• Can you explain how trades that involve a “player to be named later” work? It there a timeline in which MLB requires the trades like that to be finalized? Could a team theoretically finalize a trade like that during the season but after the trade deadline or does it have to be finalized in the offseason? I’d love to hear about any known behind the scene stories of these trades.

• Usually a team provides the other club with a list of a few players to choose from as the PTBNL.  I believe the other team has to decide on its choice within six months of the trade.  This timeframe allows for players drafted that year to be eligible, since clubs cannot trade a player until at least six months after their draft date.

NY Mess

• Stearns and Mendoza both seem really good at their jobs, but this team is pretty bad. Do these guys keep their jobs or is a shakeup coming in the offseason? There could be several hard years in front of this team given payroll, age, and lack of quality.

• It always felt like the Mets’ halfway approach to their pitching staff would catch up to them, but the biggest question mark has been the surprising lack of offense.  Lindor hasn’t looked right for a couple of months and may be playing hurt, Vientos’ production fell off sharply, and overall the lineup just hasn’t been the sum of its parts.
• I don’t think either Stearns or Mendoza are going anywhere, but a change in hitting coaches seems very plausible.

• Why don’t we see more (or any) teams using openers? It seems like it worked wonders for teams like the Tigers and Rays in recent years. Does the data show otherwise?

• Deploying an opener/bulk pitcher for a regular turn in the rotation makes things harder on a pitching staff’s depth.  Over a short period or even a couple of months it can work fine, or even work wonders.  Over a full season, however, it has some drawbacks.

• Where do you think Barger eventually ends up?  Is he a 3B or a RF long term?

• I’d install him at third base since that’s a tougher position to fill. There’s no harm in toggling Barger between both 3B and RF as circumstances dictate, for now.

NL playoffs

• Which teams do you have making the postseason?  Any surprise team that could sneak in?

• Even with the Mets in freefall and the Cubs being shaky recently, the Reds are the only team that is in decent position right now to break into the playoff picture.  Cincinnati is the only non-playoff NL team with a winning record, since the Giants and Cardinals are both exactly .500

  The way the Mets look right now, I’m hard-pressed to think much of their chances down the stretch.  Meanwhile, the Reds get Hunter Greene back this week.

• Colson make a run at top 3 rookie of the year with the way he is playing?  Who wins the award?

• Kurtz is walking away with the AL ROY.  Jacob Wilson will still get plenty of votes despite his injury, plus you’ve got Roman Anthony surging and Noah Cameron continuing to pitch well.  Montgomery is probably out of luck.

• Do I have anything left or is the inability of my teammates to put runs on the board. Today was a bad day for the lack of offense.

• The Giants’ lack of run support has certainly been an issue, but Verlander hasn’t helped himself with some shaky performances.  I dove into his under-the-hood numbers a bit during that post earlier tonight, and they’re not particularly impressive.

  Whether or not he has anything left in the tank remains to be seen, as there’s probably some change of scenery potential there as well heading into 2026.  Verlander is such a name and has such a history of defying time in the past that some team will definitely be willing to give him another one-year deal.

  Naylor turned 28 last June, he’s posted four above-average offensive years in a row, and he is on pace to break Rickey Henderson’s steals record.  The downside is that Naylor is a 1B-only player, his numbers have been more solid than elite, and he might want extra in order to stay in a pitcher-friendly environment like Seattle.

• Yes, I just looked this up on Wikipedia.  As I understand it, Grimace seemed to be more of a main villain before his face turn, whereas the Hamburglar was more of a lower-level nuisance.  That probably made it easier to keep the Hambluglar (tm Vic Michaelis) a bad guy, since obviously McDonald’s can’t endorse the concept of stealing their food.

• Your take on Bazzana? He was the 1.1, but so far seems like the weakest guy taken of the top picks.

• The Guardians just promoted him to Triple-A today, which makes sense since he’s been ripping up minor league pitching.

  Obviously it is way WAY too early to pass judgement on anyone from the 2024 draft.  If Kurtz wasn’t breaking out so early and skewing the curve for everyone, Bazzana’s numbers (as a “normal” prospect) would look great.

• Paredes would be used at 1B or DH, depending on Alvarez’s status.  You could maybe see him at 2B if Altuve then plays left field.  Needless to say, Houston would find a way to get Paredes in there.

• Not to press the panic button too much for Detroit fans, but there are some similarities right now between the 2024 Orioles and the 2025 Tigers — a team that had basically everything go right for three months, and then reality started to sink in.

  There’s still plenty of time for the Tigers to stabilize things.  As mentioned earlier, their six-game lead is still substantial.  (If you asked Tigers fans before the season if they would’ve been happy with a six-game division lead on August 9, that would’ve been a unanimous yes.)

• I find it hard to believe, for one, that Riley Greene’s slump will last the rest of the year

• I’m talking building a dynastic team, not trying to eek in by selling the top prospects.
• First place caused the GM to drop the team building plan? They were a rebuilding team and had pending Free Agents, an opt out player and blocked prospects not likely to make the Detroit roster.

• These were two different comments by the same poster, for the record.

  Scott Harris made statements something along these lines post-deadline, saying that other teams were making such big asks for Detroit’s top prospects that Harris didn’t want to blow up the future just to make a run in 2025.  That’s all logical and, as I’ve noted in the past, having a deep farm system can sometimes made trade talks difficult, since every other club will naturally aim high at first for just the top minor leaguers.

  I do think digging a bit deeper into the prospect pile, however, might’ve been a shot in the arm for a flagging Tigers team.  Obtaining a player with multiple years of control, for instance, might’ve been worth the cost of giving away someone in the top 10 prospects (if obviously not Clark, McGonigle, etc.)

• I really liked the Phillies getting Duran.  They paid a big cost, but having a star closer immediately solves a big roster problem.

• If the jays make the playoffs, what’s their starting rotation look like?

• Easiest call is probably just Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt, with Scherzer as the fourth. Lauer probably deserves a start but he can also be more easily shifted down into bullpen duty.  Bieber (and Manoah) are x-factors as well, but we’ll cross that bridge once we see either in action.

• Great job with the deadline coverage!

• Thanks!  As you might expect, deadline day is easily MLBTR’s busiest day of the year, so the whole staff was on call to cover the tons of breaking stories all day long.

• What does the Dodgers playoff rotation look like with everyone healthy? Would Kershaw potentially be left out? Have a hard time trusting Sasaki with no postseason experience

• Big if, but IF everyone is healthy, Kershaw will still get starts.  It is possible you could see a Kershaw/Ohtani hybrid “starter” in a piggyback capacity depending on where Ohtani is at health-wise come October.

• Two questions kind of fold into one here, as Painter will probably be stepping right into the rotation spot left open when Suarez (likely) departs in free agency.  The Phillies instead opted to move Abel to address another need in bringing Duran in to close.

• I’m going out on a limb by saying that the Marlins won’t be signing Cody Bellinger this winter.  Or anyone to any kind of pricey, longer-term contract.  Miami’s rebuild has shown some really good progress but it’ll be a long time (if ever) that the organization moves into that kind of a player acquisition phase.

• Are the Braves closer to contending or a rebuild?

• There’s still so much talent on the roster that I feel 2025 might just be a Murphy’s Law season.  Having basically the entire rotation get hurt is enough to crush any team, but the bigger long-term issue might be that so many of the hitters didn’t produce.

  With healthier pitching, Acuna, Olson, the Baldwin/Murphy combo, and Riley, that’s a good core right there.  At least one of Harris/Profar/Albies needs to rebound, and I feel it’s possible Atlanta could trade Albies this winter to upgrade at 2B.

Cashman

• I know Devin Williams has been awful, especially recently. He does have a great track record, any chance he gets a qualifying offer in the offseason? Does he accept it?

• Williams would absolutely accept a qualifying offer, but the Yankees just as absolutely aren’t going to offer one given his struggles

• For Duran, i personally would have preferred Ford and Sloan or Cijntje over Tait and Abel, simply because the Twins would have a more near ready catcher and could trade Jeffers in the off-season. What say you?

• That also would’ve been a pretty good trade package, except we don’t know if the Mariners actually had that offer on the table.

• Since Arenado isn’t offering much at this point beyond good defense, probably yes.

Is it Football Season?

• What will it take for the Reds to truly acquire a player that helps them offensively this winter/offseason?  And when will the media begin calling out their ownership/front office?

• In my view, the Cincinnati beat writers have been plenty critical of the team’s moves, or lack thereof.

  The Reds have a lot of money coming off the books this winter, so even with arb raises cutting into that figure to some extent, there’s room for the team to make at least one pricey addition.  If such a move is made, it simply has to be for a productive player (i.e. not the Jeimer Candelario signing), given the team’s budget limitations.  Adding one proper full-time outfielder rather than relying on the platoons would also be a good way to solidify matters.

• Do you think Trevor Story will opt out at the end of the season given his performance this season?

• Story is entering his age-33 season, and would be leaving a guaranteed $55MM on the table by opting out of the last two seasons on his deal.  I find it hard to believe he’d pass on that money coming off a season in which he’d stayed healthy, but still only has slightly above-average offense
• It seems far likelier that Story remains in his contract and sticks around to play for a Red Sox team that looks like they’re entering a promising era

A’s tanked 2025 trading Erceg

• Why don’t the Oakland A’s leave a good bullpen in place without tinkering with it? Do you think the A’s would have gone 1–20 this year, if they had not traded Lucas Erceg to the Royals? (Will Klein is already gone, like Joe Boyle; in recent trades, it seems that the A’s have acquired a lot of players who are soon gone from the franchise: out of options, etc.? I don’t know the right term for it, but this seems to be a recent phenomenon.) Trade Mason Miller and JP Sears to the Padres for four this year; you’re gambling that Leo de Vries turns out to be something more than Yoan Moncada, and you’re gambling that you can trade one reliever after one or two good years for another minor league prospect or two who throws 100mph. What is your school of thought on trading relievers having good years with years of team control for minor league starters? It seems like the A’s haven’t brought up starters like Hudson Mulder Zito in a long time…

• Relief pitching is inherently unreliable.  I don’t blame the A’s for selling high on Miller or even Erceg, especially when another team is willing to offer a blue-chipper like DeVries

• As a diehard Pirates fan (I will take your pity please), is it wrong for me to want to trade Skenes now? I want him in Pittsburgh forever but the reality is that isn’t going to happen and I don’t want to see his career ruined by the inept organization. Plus the haul back is the best bet to land 3 future major league bats in the lineup.

• It’s an unfortunate state of affairs that fans are so resigned to having a generational talent on their team seem like an inevitable departure.  I wonder how many Pirates fans share this poster’s view, in the sense that the Bucs might as well sell high on him now rather than delaying the inevitable.

• What type of  extensions ($ and years) would  the Astros have to offer Hunter Brown and Jeremy Pena in the offseason, to keep them in Houston beyond their arbitration years?

• Both are represented by Scott Boras, so extensions may be unlikely barring a drastic overpay.  Pena has two arb years left and Brown is arb-eligible for the first time this coming winter, so the Astros may stick with this limited cost control in order to manage the rest of their payroll, if the CBA remains a concern.

  Even with the Twins kicking in some money on Carlos Correa, the addition of that contract adds another significant boost to Houston’s long-term expenditures.

• Why isn’t Lawlar playing everyday in the bigs?

• He’s been recovering from a hamstring strain.  Once healthy, he’ll certainly get called back to the Diamondbacks.

• Jays look like contenders but Brendon Little has been bad recently and Fluharty/Bruihl aren’t leverage guys. Do you think Little bounces back and how will jays pen fare going forward?

• Dominguez and Varland were good additions, but I would’ve liked to have seen Toronto get one more reliever into the mix.  You mentioned a few of the inexperienced or unproven names the Blue Jays have been relying on for much of the year, and the doors may already be coming off a couple of these relievers.
• Depending on the state of the rotation, it seems possible the Jays could do something like move Manoah or even Lauer into the bullpen in September to add depth and quality.

• When will Skubal be a free agent? Should they have gone all in?

• He is set to hit free agency following the 2026 season.
• Skubal is another Boras client, so with an extension unlikely, I would’ve viewed this situation as another reason the Tigers could’ve or should’ve pushed harder to win now

• Altho Altuve has been a team player by moving off 2b, give the guy some respect by leaving him at 2b- with all his accomplishments over the years.

• The other factor behind the position change was that Altuve has been a subpar defender (in the view of most metrics) at second base for some time now.  He hasn’t done much better as a left fielder either, leaving the Astros in a bit of a quandary about where exactly to play him going forward.

• What would a Nick Kurtz extension look like?

• Since Kurtz is limited to first base, he probably couldn’t command something quite in the Anthony/Carroll tier of extensions for players with less than a year of service time.  But, asking for at least a $10MM average annual value seems like the absolute floor.

• At this rate, Josh Naylor will be there before the season is out.

Phillies

• The Phillies have managed to make it through another year with just one major pitching injury, and that wasn’t even an arm injury!  How have they managed to stay so (relatively) healthy while the rest of the league seemingly has to cycle through 10 starters just to get through a season?

• Feels like you’re tempting fate just by asking this question!  Part of it is just pure luck, part can be owed to the Phillies investing in the right pitchers, and credit should be given to the team’s medical and training staff for their part in keeping these guys healthy.

• Ward is the kind of everyday player that would be a nice fit in Cincy, except I’m not sure Rodriguez would be the ideal trade piece.  H-Rod himself could be part of the answer in the Reds’ outfield as early as next season.

• That was a serious answer!  Who are you to doubt the Mississauga Speed Demon?!

  Actual response: only 39 players in MLB history have ever reached the 500-steal plateau, so it’s not like it’s a common milestone.  I’d say that yes, someone will get there again eventually, but it’ll take a special kind of player.  Maybe a Chandler Simpson if he keeps consistently hitting.

• There was only so much the Orioles were going to get for rental players, so in that sense, the club did well in amassing a lot of lottery tickets and more for their various trade chips.

• Would it make any sense for the Cards to sign DJ? Yankees are paying him through next year and he could help JJ at 2B, plus the Arenado friendship. Arenado needs to stay in the StL and enter the HoF with a Cards cap

• Agree or disagree: Buying at the trade deadline is a trap for most teams. Deadline trades usually don’t move the needle much and are more likely to harm than hurt; for every Yoenis Cespedes that comes in and saves a season, there are five Pete Crow-Armstrongs.

• Pretty much every World Series champion of the last umpteen years has been helped by a deadline acquisition.  Would some of these teams have won a ring without that deadline pickup?  Maybe, but we’ll never know, and flags fly forever.

  It’s a “trap” in the sense that only one team wins every year, but I don’t view anything short of a championship as making a deadline push “not worth it” in most cases.

• The Scherzer/Kershaw match up, last night, was only the third time in the the last 35 years that two pitchers with 3,000+ strikeouts faced one another.  It happened 20 times in the ’80’s!  i find this amazing!  The fact that starting pitchers don’t go as deep in games seems to be the biggest reason for this phenomena.  What, in your opinion, are some others?

• The reason it happened so relatively often in the 80’s is because Nolan Ryan was around to face everyone, but you’re right, it’s a pretty cool feat.  It’s fun that the Jays and Dodgers seemed to go a bit out of their way to make sure things lined up for Scherzer and Kershaw to face each other one (last?) time

• Are the O’s a cautionary tale for all the good young Teams out there? This time last year the O’s were expected to dominate for the next 10 seasons.

• This is perhaps another reason why the Tigers could’ve or should’ve been more aggressive at the deadline….

  ….and yet, the Kyle Stowers trade is perhaps a counter-example of why trading prospects doesn’t always work out.  In fairness, Rogers has looked very good for Baltimore this year, so that trade no longer seems as inexplicable as it did at the time.

• What’s your opinion on the idea that the Padres may try to turn Mason Miller into a starter next year?

• I guess there’s no harm in stretching him out for a look in Spring Training, though Miller’s injury history makes me think he’s just better off as a reliever
