Mets Notes: Niese, Gee, Murphy, Nickeas

By Zachary Links | November 9, 2012 at 2:56pm CDT

The latest on the Mets..

  • Earlier today at the GM meetings, Sandy Alderson brought up the idea of possibly trading Jon Niese or Dillon Gee unprompted, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News (via Twitter).  The Mets will listen on anyone but are more reluctant to move Niese than others.
  • A Mets official told Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter) that the team probably won’t trade Daniel Murphy because of the void it would create at second base.  Jordany Valdespin would be the alternative and he isn’t viewed highly enough in the organization to be moved up into that slot.
  • The Mets announced that they have agreed to terms with catcher Mike Nickeas on a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training.

I’m not sure there is enough organizational depth left for them to make a trade for No One though.

Our problem with Murph is that he’s blocked at his best defensive position, which isn’t third base (contrary to popular misconceptions), it’s first base. Go to Fangraphs and select 2009 Fielding, 1B, and 800 innings (he played 849 that season). Murph wasn’t just good, he was great. Third in Defensive Runs Saved, and the top two played over 1,300 innings. He was near the top in almost all defensive categories. Unfortunately, we have to settle for Ike’s mediocre-to-poor fielding at first because he’s never played anywhere else. But we need both their bats in the lineup.

Maybe Reese Havens can finally take over 2B in 2013.

Why would he just blurt out “oh we may trade 2 of our starting pitchers” and name them in the media. Hes at the GM meetings. He shoudnt have to use the media to get the word out. While the players know its a business, If I’m Neise, I’m a litte insulted, considering the context.

…..and so, ok, he’s not gonna rip his shirt off and challenge Minor League players to fight club. So there that-but what positive impact not nuetral but positive decisions has made for this club, if any? I’m stumped

If I’m the Mets, and Dillon Gee is healthy, I am keeping both of those guys. They need to trade Dickey. It shouldnt even be a discussion right now. They have plenty of SP depth and the young guys need to get that opportunity to continue their development. Its best for the organization. Wish Santana was healthy b/c he would be a great 2nd lefty to have in a rotation full of young guys and could be a good mentor to have as well. Still, he needs to be moved somehow. I doubt anyone would take on his contract for this final year though, so after this year he will be gone and that spot will go to a young guy to further develop their team. In 2-3 years, they should be a contender in the East if they do things right with their position players. This is all assuming that they keep David Wright of course

Niese needs to be a part of this team going forward. Gee might be expendable, but it might be hard to find a suitor after the kind of injury he just suffered. Plus, with Santana’s status up in the air and Dickey possibly being traded, they need the SP depth. Even though Matt Harvey was solid last year, he’s young, and the rest of their pitching prospects aren’t quite ready. (Jenrry Mejia goes in that category after how dreadful he was in September)

Mejjia and Dickey I would trade, and Niese and Harvey are borderline untouchable.

I think Wilmer Flores could take over at second base soon.

Flores could but he is most suited for 3rd base

The Mets have decided to trade the entire roster to the Grand Prairie AirHogs in return for PTBNL. Salary for the 25-man will be pared down to about $400,000 and sixty cases of Miller High Life.

Dickey is tradeable for one reason.
    Wheeler
    Harvey
    Niese
    Gee
    Pelfrey
I like this future.Mejjia and Familla to the pen.If Wheeler needs one more year let Santana roll for him until then.
