NL East Notes: Marlins, Nolasco, Nats, Phillies

By Zachary Links | June 26, 2013 at 7:41pm CDT

The Marlins are looking to trade Ricky Nolasco ASAP and they figure to have plenty of suitors given the lack of quality starting pitching on the block right now.  Earlier tonight we learned that Miami has told other clubs that they have teams willing to take on all of the ~$6MM owed to Nolasco between now and the end of the season.  The Dodgers, Giants, and Rockies are all fond of the right-hander and there should be even more clubs getting in on him in the coming days and weeks.  Here's more out of the NL East..

  • Nationals GM Mike Rizzo plans to let his club get healthy before he starts getting involved in trades, writes Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.  “We’d like to get a big, left-handed bat. His name is Bryce Harper,” Rizzo said. “He’s on the horizon. We’d like to get a right-handed hitting catcher named Wilson Ramos. He’s on the horizon.”  Kilgore notes that the Nats have the financial flexibility to add a starting pitcher, but the club instead wants to see what Dan Haren looks like when he returns.
  • The Phillies face tough deadline choices, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Team CEO David Montgomery sounds like he's inclined to keep Cliff Lee, but also says that he's willing to listen on anything.  Montgomery also conceded that the fans' attachment to the club's core veterans factors into their unwillingness to part with them.
  • While teams have been wary of Nolasco in the past, the Marlins hurler is now a guy worth getting since he's a better starter than at least one guy in every rotation, writes Jeff Sullivan of Fangraphs.  The column's title is also reminiscent of a Troy McClure movie title, which is a bonus.

Rockies Sign Reid Brignac

By Zachary Links | June 26, 2013 at 6:48pm CDT

The Rockies have signed Reid Brignac to a minor league deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter).  The infielder will report to the club's Triple-A affiliate.

Brignac was designated for assignment by the Rockies in May and traded to the Yankees for $75K in cash within the ten day window.  However, the veteran elected free agency from the Bombers yesterday, giving Colorado an opportunity to welcome him back.  In 98 combined plate appearances for the two clubs, the 27-year-old posted a slash line of.185/.219/.261 this season.  For his career, the long-time Rays prospect has a .221/.262/.311 batting line in 814 career plate appearances.

AL Central Notes: Buxton, Twins, Indians

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 5:55pm CDT

Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus released his midseason Top 50 Prospects list (subscription required), and the Twins' Byron Buxton ranked No. 1 overall. Buxton was drafted second overall last season and opened the 2013 season at Class A Cedar Rapids where he .341/.431/.559 with eight homers and 32 steals in 68 games. Here's more on the Twins and the rest of the AL Central…

  • Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN tweets that the Twins aren't interested in the recently released Ian Stewart. Wolfson also notes that the Twins aren't one of the 10 teams on Yovani Gallardo's no-trade list.
  • Indians GM Chris Antonetti told Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the intensity of trade talks "has certainly picked up," but the Tribe will wait for Asdrubal Cabrera and Chris Perez to get healthy before making final trade assessments.
  • Antonetti sounds open to giving John McDonald a job somewhere in the organization, writes Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer.  "Right now John wants to keep playing," Antonetti said about the infielder, who was designated for assignment earlier today. "If he doesn't get another big league job, we'd certainly talk to him."

Teixeira To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 4:13pm CDT

4:13pm Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that the Yankees have insurance on Teixeira's contract which, when coupled with the initial WBC salary relief, should cover about 80 percent of Teixeira's $22.5MM salary.

3:06pm: At a press conference, Teixeira confirmed to reporters, including Andy McCullough of the Star Ledger, that he's done for the season (Twitter link). Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets that the surgery will require 4-5 months of rest and rehab. Teixeira is hoping to be 100 percent in six months.

2:54pm: The Yankees announced today that doctors have recommended surgery for the torn sheath tendon in Mark Teixeira's right wrist. Such a procedure would almost certainly mean that his season is over.

Teixeira, 33, initially injured his wrist while preparing for the World Baseball Classic and missed nearly two months before being activated from the DL on May 31. He received just 66 plate appearances this season and hit .151/.270/.340 with three homers.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently pointed out that the Yankees' decision to activate Teixeira could cost the team more than $15MM, as the WBC would've been on the hook for the injury. The Yankees are sorely lacking right-handed pop, and Teixeira's injury should impact the team's strategy as the trade deadline draws near.

Lyle Overbay, signed by the Yankees at the end of Spring Training, has filled in admirably at first base. However, he's hitting just .197/.229/.333 against left-handed pitching.

Orioles News: Dylan Bundy, Freddy Garcia

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 3:43pm CDT

Earlier today the Orioles were reported as one of the teams that is in hot pursuit of Ricky Nolasco, and it was also announced that infielder Yamaico Navarro cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A. Here's more on the O's…

  • Top prospect Dylan Bundy will undergo Tommy John surgery after meeting with Dr. James Andrews earlier today, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). Bundy ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the game prior to this season, according to Baseball America and MLB.com.
  • MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli reports (via Twitter) that Bundy will now have a fourth option year as a result of the injury. As Baseball America's Matt Eddy explained back in March: "Players who have a season wiped out by injury do not receive credit for a 'professional season' so long as they spend 30 or fewer days on the active roster."
  • Connolly also tweets that Freddy Garcia has yet to decide if he will accept an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. The 36-year-old has until Thursday to make a decision. Baltimore attempted to option Garcia to Triple-A rather than designating him for assignment earlier this week.

Indians Designate John McDonald For Assignment

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 2:15pm CDT

The Indians have designated John McDonald for assignment and activated Asdrubal Cabrera from the disabled list, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter).

The 38-year-old McDonald appeared in eight games for the Tribe but only recorded eight plate appearances. He went hitless for Cleveland and has collected just two hits in 38 at-bats this season between the Pirates and Indians. For his career, McDonald is just a .236/.274/.327 hitter. He's been an outstanding defender at shortstop according to both UZR and DRS, however.

Orioles Outright Yamaico Navarro

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 12:53pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Navarro has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk, tweets Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.

MONDAY: Navarro is now on outright waivers, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes has learned.

TUESDAY: The Orioles announced (via Twitter) that they have selected the contract of Travis Ishikawa and designated infielder Yamaico Navarro for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. A 25-man roster space has been opened by placing Miguel Gonzalez on the paternity list.

Navarro, 25, hit .286/.333/.357 in 31 plate appearances for the O's this year, though he's just a career .206/.258/.267 hitter. Despite his youth, he's seen Major League action with four different clubs — the Red Sox, Pirates, Royals and O's. He's fared significantly better in 190 games at the Triple-A level, batting .268/.354/.440.

Ishikawa exercised the out clause in his minor league contract, giving the Orioles 48 hours to decide whether or not to add him to the roster. General manager Dan Duquette said earlier this morning they were leaning toward selecting the contract. Ishikawa, who was hitting .316/.413/.525 with seven homers in 208 plate appearances at Triple-A, will start at DH for the Orioles tonight and bat eighth.

Cubs, Kris Bryant “Nowhere Close” To Deal

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 12:02pm CDT

While the majority of first-round picks from this year's draft have agreed to terms or signed, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Cubs and No. 2 overall selection Kris Bryant are "nowhere close to a deal."

Bryant and adviser Scott Boras are seeking a bonus greater than the $6.7MM assigned pick value, while the Cubs are hoping to sign him for just over $6MM, according to Heyman. The Cubs could spend as much as $7MM on Bryant without forfeiting draft picks for 2014, but they can also point to the fact that No. 1 pick Mark Appel signed for $6.35MM and No. 3 pick Jonathan Gray signed for $4.8MM.

Bryant, who hit 31 homers this season for the University of San Diego, could follow the path that Appel took in 2012 and return to college for his senior season to re-enter the draft in 2014. The Cubs wouldn't be able to reallocate the money they'd planned to spend on Bryant, though they would receive a compensatory pick in next year's draft. Heyman reports that talks could go all the way to the July 15 deadline.

NL Central Links: Cole, Hellweg, Marmol, Cubs

By Steve Adams | June 26, 2013 at 10:22am CDT

Yesterday the Cubs finally parted ways with embattled former closer Carlos Marmol, and they also cut ties with Ian Stewart after his harsh Twitter outburst against the team earlier this month. Here's more out of the NL Central…

  • Pirates general manager Neal Huntington wouldn't say whether or not Gerrit Cole is on an innings limit for his rookie season when asked by Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Huntington did hint, however, that the Pirates try to prepare their minor leaguers to "log innings without the media attention that some have gotten," which seems to be an allusion to Stephen Strasburg's case last season.
  • The Brewers will promote Johnny Hellweg to replace the injured Alfredo Figaro, reports MLB.com's Kevin Massoth. The 24-year-old right-hander will be the second player from last summer's Zack Greinke trade with the Angels to appear for the Brewers (the other, of course, being Jean Segura). Hellweg, the Crew's No. 6 prospect according to Baseball America, had a 2.82 ERA but a meager 1.14 K/BB ratio in 76 2/3 Triple-A innings.
  • Cubs GM Jed Hoyer told Carrie Muskat of MLB.com that Marmol had become a distraction, and it was time to move on. Hoyer had been trying to deal Marmol since last August (Twitter link).
  • Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald notes (on Twitter) that it's likely the Cubs will simply release Marmol, as they're unlikely to be able to find any takers in a trade.
  • Hoyer also told Muskat that he or president Theo Epstein has been in contact with every other GM in the game over the past four to five days as they prepare for the trade deadline rush (Twitter link).

Diamondbacks Outright Josh Wilson

By Zachary Links | June 26, 2013 at 8:45am CDT

WEDNESDAY: Wilson has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Reno, according to the Pacific Coast League's transactions page.

FRIDAY: The Diamondbacks announced that they have designated Josh Wilson for assignment.  Wilson is the latest big league player to find himself in limbo as he is the fifth player to be designated for assignment today.  The move will allow Arizona to promote right-hander Zeke Spruill.

Wilson, 32, has hit just .200/.262/.300 in 65 plate appearances this year for Arizona.  In six big league seasons, Wilson owns a slash line of .225/.278/.317 for the D'Backs, Mariners, Rays, Padres, Nats, Marlins, and Brewers.  He has spent the bulk of his major league time playing shortstop but has also seen a significant amount of games at second and third base.
