Blue Jays Designate Brad Mills For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 22, 2014 at 2:17pm CDT

2:17pm: The Blue Jays have announced the move to designate Mills.

1:35pm: The Blue Jays will designate left-hander Brad Mills for assignment in order to clear a roster spot for top prospect Aaron Sanchez, reports Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet (via Twitter). Earlier today, Nicholson-Smith’s colleague, Shi Davidi, reported that Sanchez would be promoted.

The 29-year-old Mills pitched two innings for the Blue Jays after they claimed him off waivers from the A’s, yielding eight runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Overall, he’s surrendered 16 runs in 18 1/3 innings of work at the big league level this season despite tremendous success at the Triple-A level. In 75 innings with Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate, Mills pitched to a 1.75 ERA with 9.2 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9.

I could see a non-contender like the Padres or Cubs take a chance on him and see what he could do in a low pressure environment.

Second stint with the Blue Jays organization. I lose track of this guy because he seems to play musical chairs more than Jose Guillen did.

I knew this was going to happen. I hope the A’s pick him back up.

The A’s have more than enough depth that he wouldn’t even be necessary. Just ask Tommy Milone.

At this point, Brad Mills should start putting out classifieds for baseball related chores:
    – Need a mop-up guy after your starter only lasts two innings? Give me a call!
    – Need a spot start when your 5th starter needs to miss a start because he tweaked his elbow? I’m your guy!
    – Bullpen taxed after a long game? Make me an offer!
    – Want a lefty to get tough lefties out? Here’s your chance! … unless said lefty is David Ortiz, as he is really mean to me.

Check… check… check… nope. Mills might be the first lefty ever to have opposing lefties hit .351/.440/.596 in 109 PA. That’s pretty impressively bad.

Maybe Terry Francona should pick him up as a bench coach.

Even with his Jays ERA of 36.00, he was bound to improve with his 21.14 FIP, right?

Boy, a freelance writer at Starbucks has better job security than Mills.

Seriously though, I would like it if the Pirates tried to get him.
