Mets-Brewers Deal For Carlos Gomez Collapses

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2015 at 2:01pm CDT

9:58pm: The deal is off and won’t occur before the deadline, Mets GM Sandy Alderson tells reporters including Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (via Twitter).

EARLIER: The Mets have acquired Carlos Gomez, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  He says the deal is done pending physicals. In exchange for Gomez, the Mets will send right-hander Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores to Milwaukee, according to Bob Klapisch (Twitter link).

Now 29 years old, Gomez cut his teeth in the Majors as a 21-year-old with the Mets. Traded to the Twins as part of the 2008 Johan Santana blockbuster, Gomez spent two seasons in Minnesota and delivered mixed results before being flipped to Milwaukee in a one-for-one swap that sent J.J. Hardy to Minneapolis. His first few seasons with the team resulted in more of the same underwhelming results, but Gomez broke out into superstar territory with an explosive 2012 campaign.

That 2012 season saw Gomez bat .260/.305/.463 with a career-high 17 homers and 39 stolen bases to go along with his elite center field defense. Since that time, Gomez has paired a .276/.336/.475 batting line with some of the game’s best center field defense to deliver more than 16 wins above replacement for the Brewers.

A third baseman with average power and a .281 OBP and a pitcher who can’t even pitch until next July is a “massive overpay”?

Wheeler is out for a minimum season and a half, there’s no guarantee he will be able to pitch 100% again and even then he has a lot of development to work on cutting down his walks. The mets have an incredibly solid group of 4 young Starting Pitchers and Wheeler will be a risk even when he returns. You’re deluded if you’re acting like this is some over pay, it’s a reasonable deal for the mets

Couldn’t be more off base. Wheeler is coming off TJ and might turn into a #3 or #4 starter one day if he’s lucky, and Flores is a bench bat. Meanwhile, Gomez is one of the top 5 center fielders in the game. I’d call that an underpay.

I think this an excellent deal for both clubs.
Brewers: Wilmer Flores is still only 23 years with time to improve and when (although it’s never a guarantee with any surgery) Wheeler comes back; the Brewers could be getting a solid #3 guy with #2 potential.
Mets: Gomez will no doubt improve this club and acquiring him shows the wrest of the team/fans they are serious about making a run this year. Not to mention Gomez is under contract for 2016.

Flores can’t hit to save his life and he’s a backup utility infielder. The Brewers already have 4 RHPs who are #3s with #2 potential. And none of them coming off of Tommy John. This is not that good of a deal. Thought the Brewers were asking for more for Gomez.

Because homers and RBI’s are the be all, end all offensive stats right? .249/.281/.379 slash line for Flores, good for a 83 OPS+. His defensive numbers are actually the only thing keeping him above replacement level, so not sure what you’re looking at. Even in a down season Gomez is at .266/.332/.429. Going by OPS+ he’s 25% above what Flores is even this season.

        • yclept

Flores has an 83 OPS+ and an under .300 OBP. Maybe not terrible for a 2015 shortstop because the bar has been lowered so much – but he hasn’t been good. People love to get on his defense, but the funny thing is that it is his DEFENSIVE play that has made him somewhat worthwhile this year, according to fWAR.

Tell me how this was ever a good trade. Keeping Wheeler keeps the Mets big rotation because let’s face it: say Wheeler doesn’t come back as an ace, with the Mets pitching staff, he could pitch in the 4-5 spot and actually still have good success. Honestly, I would rather see Lagares traded instead of Flores since offense is the issue. Still, look forward for the Mets next year who may have the best rotation in baseball (if Syndergaard won’t need Tommy John surgery). Should look like this: Harvey, DeGrom, Wheeler, Matz, Syndergaard.

I have to think the Brewers acted unprofessionally here. They knew Wheeler was coming off TJ, they knew he had dealt elbow pain before, they KNEW that and they took the deal. I think at the 0 hour they got cold feet and pulled the plug despite having all the facts. I think based on Alderson saying point blank that no deal with the Brewers will happen going forward indicated that there was a bit of unprofessionalism from the Brewers, otherwise why would he be so sure that nothing further would occur?

    Reply
    • Red_Line_9

Did he say nothing further would occur with the Brewers because of unprofessionalism…or because a deal can’t be done by the deadline and Gomez would have to clear waivers… Which he certainly wouldn’t do.

Unless I missed something I saw nothing that said he was sure nothing further would occur with the Brewers or even that a deal for Gomez was dead. He said this deal was not going to happen and when asked if they were still working on a deal for Gomez or shifting their attention to someone else all he said is “It’s not Friday yet, we’ll see what happens”

        Reply
    • ThePaulCrew

Thats a fairly ignorant thing to say, blaming the Brewers. You have less inside information than the sportswriters who announced this deal prematurely.

It could just as easily be that they had an agreement in principle and then the mets decided to play (or keep playing) Flores tonight. Since when does a player who is in heavy trade talks start or not get pulled as soon as a deal is done?

Maybe Sandy felt bad that he made Flores cry so he backed out. See I can talk out of my butt too.

And while you’re right that they knew Wheeler was coming off TJ, the Mets would not have had to release his confidential medical records until the trade was in place, that’s why you always see trades “pending medical approval” or “pending physical.” It’s possible the Brewers just got cold feet, or they may have gotten the medical records and found something that concerned them.

        Reply
    • Novak

For starters, the Brewers aren’t the Cardinals – hacking into other teams databases and getting confidential information (such as medical records). They wouldn’t know the specifics of what’s all wrong in his arm, if they had been the ones who balked at his health.

As it turns out, it was the Mets who balked, making your entire post out to be an even bigger comedic piece. Thanks.

No one of significant importance in either organization would have leaked this pending deal. So some grunt worker hears the rumor in the afternoon before they leave for the day and it hits social media and off we go with the speculations and rumors. Even if Wheeler were in the deal, it would take a while for the Brewers to conduct a physical. They don’t call wheeler at midnight and say hey stop by for a physical. It would take a day or to schedule and get the results. Realistically, it’s better the so called deal is off. Flores has too much of an upside to also throw in Wheeler. Gomez hit his peak the past three seasons and is already 29. His current lack of productivity could be due to injury if not due to the league figuring him out. Let’s get someone younger for the outfield or pay the Brewers the proper price for Gomez. Flores and a pitching prospect like Montero is a better offer.
