Stephen Piscotty Leaves Game After Collision

By charliewilmoth | September 29, 2015 at 2:01pm CDT

TUESDAY: Piscotty has been released from the hospital, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told Casey Stern and Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (audio link).  The outfielder “had a couple of bruises but overall everything checked out very clean.  He had a couple more tests today and things came back as positive as we could hope for, so that was very fortunate,” Matheny said.

MONDAY, 10:03pm: All tests Piscotty has undergone have been negative, the Cardinals have announced. He will stay at the hospital overnight.

8:45pm: Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty has left this evening’s game against the Pirates after appearing to get hit in the head in a nasty collision. Piscotty and Peter Bourjos were both chasing a fly ball hit to left center field when Piscotty dove and appeared to strike his head hard against Bourjos’ knee. Piscotty was on the ground for several minutes afterwards and was then removed on a stretcher. He gave a small wave to fans at PNC Park as he was carted off. Jon Jay replaced him in left field.

The details of Piscotty’s injury aren’t yet known — the Cardinals announced he was diagnosed with a “head contusion,” but that he would undergo further tests. It would be very surprising if he didn’t miss significant time. Piscotty was pressed into duty due this season to a series of injuries to other Cardinals’ outfielders, and he’s had a terrific rookie year, batting .313/.365/.507 in 249 plate appearances.

People downvote for praying for Piscotty. Some sick people on here.

I don’t believe in prayer, but I certainly believe in respect, compassion, and positive thought. That collision was frightening. My thoughts are with him.

A down vote would equal only 2 things. a) wishing a severe injury on Mr Piscotty which is the sickest or b) disrespecting someone for offering prayers for one who is injured because you do not believe in prayer. Be more like Zippytms and respect others even if you do not believe in what they do.,

Man o man how huge this is for the Cardinals. Really their best and most consistent hitter this season.

It looked like a hard collusion, I hope he can recover soon and is not too seriously injured

I hope Piscotty is alright. It looked pretty bad.

Despite all these injuries, the Cardinals are somehow going to win the NL Central. The Pirates have no one to blame but themselves because they threw away too many games against the Reds and Brewers.

They didn’t throw those games away. They simply got beat. The Reds and Brewers weren’t going to just lay down and say “Have fun with your pennant race, boys.” They played spoiler, just like earlier this month when the Reds took 3 out of 4 with the Cardinals at home. Even the worst teams win a third of their games.

Piscotty’s a gamer. His brothers got the win tonight, and his 2nd inning throw to home w/ based loaded kept the game scoreless.

Cardinal Nation is with you tonight Stephen! Go Cards!

I cringe anytime there’s an injury in the head/neck area. The spine is obviously at risk as well as the possibility of concussion/vision issues.

Given how bad the collision looked last night, it’s a relief to hear that it may not even be anything that serious.
