The Red Sox have announced that they’ve designated corner infielder and outfielder Garin Cecchini for assignment. The move clears space on their roster for David Price.
Following a 2013 season in which he hit .322/.433/.471 between Class A+ Salem and Double-A Portland, Cecchini was regarded as a top prospect — prior to the 2014 season, Baseball America rated him the 74th best prospect in the game. Since then, though, the 24-year-old’s stock has slipped, as he struggled to establish himself at Triple-A Pawtucket. This season, he batted .213/.286/.296 there (while playing mostly left field, although he also appeared in 42 games at the infield corners) and went 0-for-4 in two games in the big leagues. He is, however, still young enough that other clubs could find him to be an attractive option as a waiver claim.

I don’t like this at all. I was really rooting for this guy, he has that Pedroia attitude and hustle that makes you want a kid like this to succeed. Best of luck to him on whichever team picks him up, because I don’t expect to clear outright waivers at all. Seeing as he’ll be an ex-Sox, I expect the Cubs or A’s.
aaron5
Hurts losing him. He will inevitably be scooped up by Epstein or Billy, great point.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
With Sanoval, HanRam, and Holt, where does he play? Maybe DD is setting up a bigger trade by putting him on waivers?
Brixton
Hes a former notable prospect. I’d much rather take a shot at this guy than have Howard or Asche having everyday ABs
User 4245925809
Charlie Manuel used to love this guy and I still think he’s got a chance. Cherrington don’t think would have done this, they have several others who should have gone 1st, including the out of options Edwin Escobar who has -0- chance of making the Sox 25 man roster, Sean Coyle, Noe Ramirez..
stymeedone
Guess this means the Phillies can grab him as a rule 5 pick, instead of trading their best starter for him, like many suggested last spring.
bruinsfan94 2
No one ever said that. Ever. If he was ever mentioned it would have been as a throw in.
A'sfaninUK
The fact that you were trying to “throw in” a guy with such little value to the org that they would DFA him, speaks volumes about why people need to stop doing that in their trade proposals. More often than not, no one will pay for trash.
stymeedone
he was constantly mentioned, because I was constantly telling them that 3B was one position that Philly didnt need.
hozie007
I would have sent down Sean Coyle before Cecchini. This is the kind of guy that struggles in trip-A and then comes to the majors and mashes….kind of like JD Martinez. Plus he can play 1B or 3B.
disgruntledreader 2
In the last decade, there’s been one guy whose career path looks “kind of like JD Martinez.” He’s currently an OF for Detroit.
jkunkle
Really hope the Braves consider a flyer on this kid
Bob Smiley
Cecchini was untouchable years ago..lol. Trade Owens before he turns out to be the bust known as Cecchini.
jakesaub
Cecchini dropped his value because he did poorly at the AAA level. Owens has dominated minor league competition, and made a decent showing in the bigs. They aren’t the same cases.
Bob Smiley
true. but id trade Owens in a heartbeat.
Bob Smiley
this is comical. so many fans feel these kids are worth so much. Cecchini was the next big thing…now what? No one should be untouchable. Owens blows.
jakesaub
Who said Owens is untouchable? Give me one piece of evidence that Owens “blows”. His ERA+ was 94, so 6% worse than league-average, his FIP was 4.28, nothing unheard of for the AL East. As a ROOKIE. Not saying he’s the next Jon Lester or anything, but he certainly doesn’t “blow” and could make as a very nice insurance piece if/when Buchholz or another starter gets injured.
Bob Smiley
for what so many think he is worth. he blows. i’d trade him while he has the name value.
jakesaub
What do you think people think he’s worth? The perception is that he can develop into a solid #3 for a team, which is not an absurd prediction at all…
Bob Smiley
Fans..lots said Cecc was going to be a stud and would not be included in any trades…years later…the Red Sox could not find 1 guy they like less than the top prospect from a few years ago. – all i am saying. Owens is the next so called top prospect on the way out.
mookiessnarl
Some prospects bust. It’s inevitable. Predicting Owens to bust over anyone else is silly. If anything he has a lower floor than most prospects because he doesn’t rely on velocity to get guys out and has very good off speed stuff.
jakesaub
Were you advocating they deal Bogaerts two years ago too?
wilymo
you can’t trade him to the fans, though. i’d expect other front offices value him in a more or less accurate way. they have video of the games now
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Jon Lester started out with an FIP north of 4.28. Just pointing that out.
bruinsfan94 2
Owens is not untouchable. There is a good chance he winds up in triple A, traded, or in the pen next year. Barring anymore signings or trades, he will be one of as many as five guys battleing for the 5th spot for the Sox.
Bob Smiley
good chance he ends up being a bust.
bruinsfan94 2
Every prospect has a good chance of failing. Do you actually have a reason you think he will fail? His k/bb rate or something? Or are you just make bold guess’s because they are both Red Sox?
A'sfaninUK
Give it a rest, we get it.
JT19
I see you’re one of those guys who say trade prospects because they’re gonna be busts, but if they develop then you’ll say the team should never have traded them.
theruns
On a day when Mike Pelfrey signed for $8 million a year, one should not have to wonder aloud how important homegrown players are. They are like gold, you get their prime years at a fraction of what you pay free agents on the tail end of their careers. That’s why they are “overrated”.
A'sfaninUK
What would be the point of trading a pre-majors Kris Bryant or Carlos Correa?
Bob Smiley
you guys don’t remember when Cecchini was out of all trade talks?? lol
jakesaub
Owens isn’t being kept out of trade talks though…
Bob Smiley
i hope not…but most fans feel he is. or should be. i just think they should sell now so they don’t repeat this Cecc drop in a few years.
stymeedone
He joins the ranks of Middlebrooks, JBJ, and Lavarnway.
ianthomasmalone
Not at all. None of those other three belong together either.
Middlebrooks: Complete bust.
JBJ: Not really overhyped. Defense is elite and he was always projected to be great at that. Offense at the ML level was always a question mark and still is.
Lavarnway: Always problematic as a defensive catcher. Lost value after moving to first. Only chance was power that never really developed.
Cecchini resembles Lavarnway slightly, but he was never untouchable.
Ray Ray
Don’t forget the immortal Lars Anderson.
natesp4
Just FYI, this picture is of Travis Shaw not Garin Cecchini
Matt St.
The Phillies should grab him. They should release Howard and let Cecchini play first for the whole year. Its not like they have anything to lose by doing so.
disgruntledreader 2
He’ll likely clear waivers and stay in the organization.
User 4245925809
Doubt it. Kid is 24yo, 2 options left and only 2 years ago was highly rated around the game.
Several teams around the league that have retreads being protected on the 40 man roster with far less potential. Doubt seriously he clears, though most Sox fans probably wish he would.
Sokane
I don’t see any way he clears waivers. Too many teams will want to take a chance on a former top 100 prospect with potential power.
Ken M.
former top prospect and future Red Sox HOF Cecchini
bruinsfan94 2
The joke is even better the 50th time you tell it. Got any jokes about a free agent failing an Orioles medical exam? Maybe something about a priest, a rabbi, and Arods cousin?
mike156
i don’t mean to be sarcastic, but wasn’t this guy a near untouchable? I guess another reminder that every prospect doesn’t not morph into a HOF. And, maybe an argument that trading prospects for established talent isn’t always a catastrophe.
bruinsfan94 2
Probably was more to do with the fact they really needed a third basemen as we have not had a consistent good everyday third basemen under control in years. He hasn’t been untouchable in a long time if he ever was which I doubt.
gomerhodge71
Something happened along the way. This guy was one of their top prospects, indeed, but if you saw him play at Pawtucket in 2015, you’ll know that he struggled big time. Like he was a totally different player. It happens.
A'sfaninUK
Moral of the story, don’t use a single-season batting average achieved as an older prospect in a league he should have been moved up from, as a way to measure prospect value.
ianthomasmalone
Not really. Highly regarded, but never untouchable.
alex navarrette
He should grab the Angels’ attention. He’d be a solid depth piece to keep around, and I believe the 40 man only has 35 players on it right now. Couldn’t hurt to claim him and let him go later in the offseason if they sign that many guys.
ianthomasmalone
I’m tired of all this revisionist history on Cecchini’s hype. He was never untouchable and there were never any trade rumors that ever had him as the headlining piece of a deal. He was a highly regarded prospect, but not really an overly hyped one.
redsox2323
Well anyone who says owens is a bust is dumb the only untouchables on the red sox is moncada benintendi betts and bogaerts other than that they will listen to any deal that will include getting back a nice chip i think they will make some type of prospect deal with JBJ devers and mayb owens or johnson to get a nice number 2 seing as how devers is a top 25 and top 5 3rd base prospect that deal should be easy to get a shelby miller or a sonny gray
Doug
Oh man, Will Middlebrooks and Cecchini both DFA’d in the same week. I thought the BoSox hype machine had them both pegged as George Brett Jr. Too bad they both hit like fellow overhyper Jackie Bradley Jr.!
meatloaf
There goes another future HOF Sox prospect… Another one bites the dust.
southpaw777
Garin Cecchini was becoming a highly regarded prospect, but was NEVER untoughable and was never regarded as the next____________.
I love whenever a sox prospect doesnt do well the rest of you come out with the usual bs lame ass “jokes”. When a kid has hit 300 with a 400obp through AA its ok to hyoe him a bit. Admittedly, Cecchini said he was trying to be more of a power hitter, which hes not. He was like Mauer in the way that hes a big kid with a high BA and OBP with little power (10hr). It looks like that beautiful swing he used to have is no longer there. Trying to become a power guy messed it up, and maybe his head a little too…
Im sure some team will pick him up and try to get him back to who he is as a ballplayer.
Best of luck to him.
