West Notes: Reyes, Maeda, Kazmir, Fowler

By Jeff Todd | January 6, 2016 at 10:31am CDT

An MLB source tells Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post that there is still no timeline regarding possible disciplinary action against Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes. (Twitter link.) That appears to be due, at least in part, to the fact that the criminal proceedings have not been wrapped up. While the league’s domestic violence policy does not require criminal action for the commissioner to impose punishment, there is arguably less cause to move swiftly given that the allegations arose during the offseason.

  • The Astros made a play for Japanese hurler Kenta Maeda before he reached agreement with the Dodgers, according to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. Houston remains an interesting potential factor in the free agent market. While the team probably does not need to make a splash, it is not difficult to imagine the team emerging as a dark horse for several players.
  • Houston was also said to have had interest in retaining Scott Kazmir before he decided to join the Dodgers, and it appears they were far from alone in that regard. The veteran lefty said that a dozen clubs had at least some communication with his camp this winter, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles News Group tweets.
  • The fact that free agent outfielder Dexter Fowler appeared at a Golden State Warriors game recently should not be interpreted as a sign he’s about to sign with the Giants, Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News tweets. He hears that “nothing is cooking” between Fowler and the club at this time. Meanwhile, MLB.com’s Chris Haft looks at the fit of some of San Francisco’s possible outfield targets.

Fowler’s my bet to win this year’s Stephen Drew memorial “what the heck do I do now” award when Spring Training starts. Gonna be hard to find a good deal when he costs a draft pick.

Fowler will find a home before Spring training. I do think it happens to someone this year though… Maybe Ian Kennedy

My money is on Howie Kendrick, although Kennedy is a good choice as well.

Kendrick is being courted by his old team, the Abgels…..but he’ll have to sign for less than the QO to play there……He sould have accepted the QO and stayed in LA……….but hindsight is always 20/20

If I was HK I would have accepted the QO and rolled the dice on a deal the next off season. W/ that said maybe he didn’t like playing in that clubhouse regardless of the size of the QO.

I say Kennedy and Gallardo. Kendrick maybe, but I’m sure some team will roll the dice considering he’s probably an upgrade over their 2B. Even with all the rumors about Gallardo, I think its just talk. Give up a pick and a contract worth at least/around $15 AAV for a guy who can’t pitch past the 6th inning, even if his numbers are good, in my opinion is a lot to ask for.

Gallardo will probably sign somewhere by the middle of next week. Lots of teams looking at him……..

Hard to feel sorry for anyone that gambles $15mm . Although I strongly dislike the QO system altogether.

Giants are back to their old tricks…….playing games with their tight budget. They knew they needed a LF, and Fowler is a solid player, but “not the answer”. They really need to forget the budget and sign Cespedes……even if it’ a deal with a 2 yr opt-out for him. He’s a beast, and they need that…..Oh Well

If the Giants are going to give up another draft pick it ought to be for Upton, not Fowler. They will most likely be over the luxury tax with any of the FA outfielders so just go big now, concidering Josh Reddick is the only guy worth signing next year and they can’t develop outfield talent to save their life.

Upton wants a 7-8 year deal for about $150++ million. Are the Giants ready for that? Cespedes would probably sign for 5/100 or 6/115.

I happen to think that Cespedes is more of a workhorse and Upton is a prima-donna kind of player. Plus, defensively, Upton is not as good as Cespedes.

It’s just my opinion, but I don’t think the Giants ink either one of them……they might even slump down to Austin Jackson (Mr. “I can’t hit, but I can play defense) to save even more money (he’ll be cheaper than Fowler for sure)

Rockies and Cardinals need to stop being stubborn and cut a deal. Cargo and Reyes for Adams, Marco Gonzalez, and Wong is a win win for both teams.
