The Orioles announced that right-hander Andrew Triggs has been claimed off of release waivers by the A’s. Baltimore cut Triggs from the roster late last week to make room for the addition of Pedro Alvarez.
Triggs, 27 on Wednesday, is no stranger to trades, having gone from the Royals to the Orioles in a minor trade last April. In 2015, Triggs mowed down his Double-A competition, posting a 1.03 ERA with 10.3 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9. However, it remains to be seen whether he can enjoy similar success at a higher level. Triggs only has a cup of coffee in Triple-A on his resume with the rest of his experience coming at Double-A and lower levels.
The Orioles reportedly were hoping to re-sign Triggs on a minor league deal, but Oakland spoiled those plans.

Great move. Triggs can be fantastic MiL depth. Kudos to Oakland

He would definitely have first crack at the bullpen, him and Ryan Dull are first and second in line to oust one or two of Graveman, Rodriguez or Doubront. He’s 27 so he’s probably more ready than his minor league climb might suggest. It’s Oakland, so it would be kind of shocking if this guy didn’t come up immediately and dominate, getting this kind of guy is Beane’s specialty move.

If Graveman doesn’t make the rotation out of ST, he’ll be in AAA I’m sure. Triggs has barely pitched in AAA and has options. Rodriguez is out of options and pitching extremely well so far this spring. Doubront is also out of options and would be the perfect stop gap for Alvarez if Graveman starts the year in AAA. Best case scenario for Triggs is he starts the year in Nashville and gets called up in a couple months. Cannot see him making the bullpen out of ST without injuries.

His double A numbers are a little misleading as he was way older than most of the competition. He does have an electric fastball though and is about as close to major league ready your gonna find on the waiver wire this time of year. I had hope the Os would get him on a minor league deal. They had other options to release to make room for Alvarez but it appears they know something we fans don’t.
