AL Notes: Yankees, Red Sox, Davis, Norris, Avila

By Jeff Todd | July 5, 2016 at 11:17pm CDT

Yankees GM Brian Cashman discussed his team’s oft-debated trade deadline stance in an appearance on the podcast of ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (audio link). He said that the club is “open to everything and anything” over the month to come, noting that he’d raise any interest in the organization’s major league assets with ownership. Cashman made clear that New York isn’t going into a selling stance, but also suggested that such a time may come and has been discussed internally. “The clock is ticking,” he said, “and the more that we stay in this mode that we’re currently in, I think it’s going to force us into some tough decisions that we didn’t want to be in. There’s some time on the clock, but it’s getting late, as people would say.”

Here’s more from the American League:

  • Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski says that trade chatter is picking up around the game, Scott Lauber of ESPN Boston was among those to report (Twitter links). Boston had contact with ten rival organizations just yesterday, he added. Meanwhile, the club announced that director of pitching analysis and development Brian Bannister will don a uniform to aid pitching coach Carl Willis in working with the staff. Bannister will not be in the dugout during games, but will seemingly take more of a hands-on approach in trying to solve the organization’s pitching woes.
  • It’s always concerning when a pitcher hits the DL with forearm issues, as was the case earlier today for Royals closer Wade Davis, but Kansas City doesn’t seem to be ringing any alarm bells. As Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports (links to Twitter), manager Ned Yost says that Davis’s ligament isn’t implicated. Yost added that Davis pitched through a similar problem last year, and Davis himself notes that he isn’t too concerned at this point.
  • The Tigers have placed lefty Daniel Norris on the DL with an oblique strain. That’s not great news for a team that has had some rotation questions arise, as Norris had showed some interesting results in his four big league appearances this year. He has allowed seven earned runs and 17 hits in 13 innings, but his sparkling 16:3 K/BB ratio is certainly promising.
  • White Sox backstop Alex Avila is headed to the DL after leaving tonight’s game with a hamstring strain, as Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago tweets. It’s too soon to know how long he’ll be out, but hamstring problems can linger. The 29-year-old has compiled a sturdy .231/.361/.347 batting line on the year while serving as part of a platoon with Dioner Navarro behind the dish. Brett Hayes could be an option behind the dish for the Sox, though he’d need to be added to the 40-man roster. The seven-year big league veteran has a .225/.354/.425 batting line through 13 games for Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate since being acquired in a minor trade earlier this summer.

It’s just a matter of time before the Red Sox panic and give into the Braves Trade Demands for Julio Teheran. Predicting….

Red Sox get: Teheran, Albeis, and Vizcaino
Braves get: Moncado, Swihart, and Benentindi

There are no other pitching options on the market but Sonny Gray. No way the Red Sox trade for a guy that has sucked as much as the guys on their staff already. The White Sox and Marlins will Buy in an attempt to make a Playoff push themselves, so Sale and Fernandez are completely out of the picture. Go Braves!!!

That is a good trade proposal, I guess you think the Braves will just give away 2 proven players and a prospect for 3 prospects which one does not have a position

Not opposed to trading prospects, but if Boston is going to gut their farm I’d hope it’d be for Fernandez or Sale.

I think Dombrowski is aiming higher than what the Braves are offering.

1 proven player, one injury riddled pitcher who’s closing games for the worst team in baseball, and a powerless prospect who’d be blocked at both positions he’s played. That trade would make little sense for the Sox, especially since Benintendi and Moncada fill holes that are currently needed in LF and 3rd respectively.

Agreed, at least in regard to prospects.

BOS needs to do something because their SP has been in trouble since last year. Porcello has looked a hair better this year, but as a #3/#4. The tough thing about BOS is that they have top talent, so they’ll want top talent back, and there just isn’t much available out there…at least not without some big question marks.

With FL going after Rodney, I doubt they’ll consider moving Fernandez. Gray hasn’t been himself this year and he isn’t being moved at a discount. Harvey (a solid bet to be on the block in the off season if he can turn it around) has floundered, Teheran…well…plenty written about him, but he is a ceiling #2 and floor #3/#4….definitely a step down from the prior three guys. Is this the year that Chris Sales is finally moved? He’d be my dark horse because he is having an excellent season and is in the 2.5yr window where I think they can push for max value (3 playoff runs left in that contract). The CWS are middling right now, so if they think they’ll be in it (they won’t), that may derail this dark horse.

Moncada is blocked by Bogaerts and Pedroia so he might be more traceable than someone like Benintendi who can fill the LF which is an area of need for Red Sox

The Braves trolls are out in full force. Teheran is missing his next start (nothing major), had a bad previous start, which is not helping his cause. You’re not going to handcuff BOS and get those kind of prospects. That’s why Coppy is saying there’s a 99.9% chance he gets traded.

Seeing how the Braves are currently filling their rotation with 2 career minor leaguers atm I seriously doubt Teheran is getting traded at any price that isn’t beyond ridiculous for the buying team.
The rotation is a mess after Teheran and none of the Braves pitching depth in the upper minors is at all ready for the big leagues. They’ll probably be looking at the Bud Norris types again in the offseason to fill out the rotation, even if we keep JT.

So sad to see fans that are rebuilding act so obnoxiously. It was the same exact thing when Phillies fans insisted we give up Swihart and Mookie Betts for Cole Hamels. They kept telling us our assets weren’t enough and their guy was a superstar ace.

Turns out, we were right to keep Mookie.

I know when you are rebuilding, your team is losing and you have very little hope. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting elite prospects back, and the only way to do that is to give up the only good players left on your team. It sucks, it hurts, but please, don’t be obnoxious fans who think they can rob the Red Sox farm for Julio #3 starter in the American league Teheran

Teheran is not an ace. Please stop insisting that he is. Please Braves fans all over the world, stop acting like Teheran is an ace. He is a good pitcher and a good trade chip, but you’re not fooling anyone or trumping up Teheran’s value by LYING about him being an ace.

Better off waiting until off season. At this point get by with fillers. Even if they acquire Teheran they are not winning a championship. They have some good talent AA and below so wait and try to get your #2 starter then when price drops a little bit. Right now build up the pen.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Moncada or Benintendi. This comming from a braves fan. I could be wrong, but I doubt the sox would give up either for Julio. Maybe one of them for Julio and Viz, but for some reason I doubt it. I’d look more along the lines of Espinoza, Swihart, Chavis, and another for both. If the the braves really want Moncada or Benintendi (which they obviously do) than I think they would have to sweeten the pot. If propose the following:

Teheran, Viz, and Rio Ruiz to BOS for Moncada, Brian Johnson and Chavis/Coyle

Then again, I don’t think a Teheran trade will happen at all, so…

Few players are completely off-limits if the return is right. If the Red Sox think they have a legitimate chance of winning it all, you can’t just partition off every one of your top-tier prospects and offer only surplus. And the Yankees really don’t have the horses to contend this year–they don’t need to do a fire-sale, but this should be a year of opportunistic sells–and buys.

They aren’t in reality, bit on this site they are. Teheran will net one (1) of Boston’s top 3 plus other pieces. Benentendi has a spot and Moncada has a spot when Pedroia is out. Devers is expendable as well as anyone else including Espinoza since Teheran would fill that spot.

If your Red Sox want to make a run in 2016 for the Playoffs, then Teheran is your only shot Big Guy. Albeis is currently in AA working on playing 2nd base which will only enhance his trade value. The Braves will not even consider moving Teheran and Vizcaino unless they get a major haul in return. The Braves are in the Cat Birds seat, not your Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are currently going down like a sunken ship.

I have heard of cutting down a product when considering a trade, but this is ridiculous. Red Sox fans need to know what they are talking about before they run their mouth

So Sox fans dont know what theyre talking about, but you feel comfortable asserting theres no special offenses in the AL East? The Orioles are 5th and Jays 6th in runs scored in the majors (Sox are first). And Fenway had the 4th highest park factor for runs in 2015, where any starter would play half his games. Maybe you are the one who needs to wait before “running their mouth”.

4552, with the exception of the Yankees, how many championships have the AL east won? The great Jay offense, how many championships do they have, Orioles, or for the Red Sox for that matter. One thing I know offense is important, but so are pitching, speed, and defense. Put all those together and then you have team to be respected

Can we put the Teheran is an ace that will get a crazy return in a trade?

Ken Rosenthal’s take: “But the only way Dombrowski should move Moncada or Benintendi is if he can acquire the type of pitcher who does not currently appear to be available — a true, controllable ace.

Braves right-hander Julio Teheran is not at that level in the opinion of most in the industry.”

But half of them are against the bluejays, yankees , tampa bay , Orioles and yes the Red Sox . And once again his era against the American League is still 2.93 . So once again go back come up with different answer why he so terrible . The fact is rather you like it or not Tehran is best pitcher on the open market . The likes of sale , gray, Fernandez , or any of mets starter are not going get traded now, at dead line , or this off season. And come this off season when there not just hand full of team that will need pitching , they be 30 other team besides the Red Sox looking for pitching , I beat one of them will give in give Braves what they want for Tehran , Vizcaino . It’s once again little think we all in craze Braves county call supply versus demand. But where the crazy ones

Considering just recently the Ordozzi is better comments are popping up, the guy that hasn’t had the same success and can’t average 6 innings a game.. Not saying Braves will get Moncado plus Benintendo plus 2-3 more.. But if traded (which I don’t believe will happen) it will be for a surprise haul.. Coppy will need an over pay to move him.. Also him missing his next start is prob. Prevents him from pitching in the All-star game..

Red Sox get tehran , vizcaino , center fielder to replace Bradley , the get vet catch who know al and has play off expense , they get very old prospects for trading shaw, and benintendi and they get Braves problem and brave take Red Sox problem and this gives Red Sox chance to save money to go out this off season to sigh free agents this summer. The Indians get super star outfield they need ,plus a super prospect they need to trade Zimmerman , they get bullpen help . Young 1b that could play 3b in shaw . They get back up catcher , and infield help if they choose. For Braves they get the prospects they need for there rebuild and they should be ready bye July next year . They take on huge contract in to play 3b they get two bullpen arms and another starter for the future and a catcher prospect that could be future catch of Braves . This works for all three teams

Players involved in this trade with zero or negative value: Johnson, Pierzynski, Krol, Pablo, Olivera (who may never even play again), Casey Kelly, Joe Kelly….

You know, I find it humerous to see these Red Sox fans saying that Teheran would be a #4 or #5 starter on an absolute jokeof a rotation that they currently have. Outside of David Price (who is absolutely pitching like garbage), Teheran would easily slide in at #2 and give the Sox a much needed boost to their rotation. My question is this…Who else is the Sox going to get in a trade any better than Teheran? Red Sox fans are dreaming of they think they are going to even sniff Sale or Fernandez. Both players play on teams that have a shit for a Playoff berth. So who else?? That is the question that not 1 Red Sox fan can answer. The Rangers are about to trade for Ordorizzi. And despite rumors and speculation, there is no way that the Rays are moving their staff ACE Archer. Maybe Matt Moore? But do Red Sox fans believe a player like a Matt Moore would turn around their pitching staff?? Its just a matter of time before The Red Sox excecs panic and send the Braves what they want for Teheran….

Red Sox get: Teheran, Albeis, and Vizcaino

    Braves get: Moncada, Swihart, Benentindi

It’s a shame that the Yankees have decided to bet the entire season on Tex and Arod.

They’ve basically decided that they will win or lose with one or both of those guys in the middle of the lineup as though one or both rediscovering their youth is a reasonable possibility but getting anything from anyone on the farm would just be silly to even consider let alone try.

The excuse of players needing more development time is pathetic.

It’s one thing to pretend the fans wont let you rebuild but it’s another thing to end a dynasty with several years of old man tributes that turn the team into a joke. As much as I support trading assets like Chapman if they aren’t going to make an effort to win this year the idea of breaking up this bullpen without even trying a few of the kids for an extended period is just unforgivable incompetence.

We’re well beyond any effort to save money or get under tax thresholds. They are either trying to lose to get a good draft choice or whoever is making decisions over there is too stupid to make decisions for themselves let alone for a billion dollar business. If this is what they consider an honest effort to win there is zero hope for this team to do anything while the current idiots are in charge.
