Red Sox Close To Deal With First-Rounder Jason Groome

By Jeff Todd | July 14, 2016 at 1:00pm CDT

12:57pm: Boston is indeed closing in on a final agreement, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports, though it’s still not over the finish line. He adds that the Red Sox had previously moved their offer to over $3.5MM — well above the ~$3.2MM slot allocation — and has crept further northward in recent days.

10:53am: The Red Sox are close to a deal with first-round draft pick Jason Groome, according to Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald (via Twitter). The young southpaw is in Boston for his physical, but the sides are still finalizing the contract terms.

Last we checked, the sides were headed toward an arrangement but still haggling over the final price. With Groome making the trip to get his medical clearance, it certainly seems that any remaining gap will be bridged in short order.

A high-school starter, Groome entered the draft as one of the most highly-rated prospects available, with MLB.com (#1), ESPN.com (#2), and Baseball America (#3) all listing him at or near the top of their boards. Chatter about his makeup seemingly took him out of contention for the top several picks, leaving other organizations in position to nab him down the line. While the Padres were said to have put a high-budget offer on the table later in the first round, the Sox chose to take a chance on signing him.

In everyone else’s system outside of Houston (Bregman), that’s probably correct, tho.

Oh good, something to offer the Braves for Teheran in addition to Moncada, Benintendi, and Espinoza…needed to sweeten the pot a little bit.

Obviously I don’t think the Braves/Sox trade will or should happen (I am a Braves fan). I too wish the talk about it would die down. I do have to say though, if that trade did happen, I would laugh so hard. Not at Boston in a jerk way. But just that most of us (Sox and Braves fans both) don’t think it will happen or should happen. The situation would just be funny because so many people have gotten into heated arguments over it.

If it did happen, Coppy should be titled Big Balla – as it would 2 seasons of him acquiring the draft’s top pick (Swanson) and top projected pick (Groome) in consecutive drafts. Won’t happen, but fun to think about.

I use to side with the sox over the Yankees, not anymore. I don’t like the way yaw cut Teheran down, he would be the best pitcher yaw would have if you were lucky enough to have him

Nothing against Teheran…he’s a good pitcher. I was poking fun at some of the crazy proposals from Braves fans. Of course, I can hardly blame them for wanting a king’s ransom, but it’s just not happening.

You must be smoking some serious sh*t!!!
I wouldn’t even trade Moncada by himself for Teheran.
I just don’t believe he’ll be that good pitching in the A.L. East.
There isn’t any free outs in the line up like in the N.L.
Boston isn’t a good park for him to pitch in neither. Lefties would take him the other way over the green monster time and time again.
Left handed pitchers are most suited for Fenway.
That’s why sox need to sign Rich Hill and he would be way cheaper Also. As he’s a second haft rental only.
The best move for the Sox is to sign a #3 or #4 type starter and keep there top talented prospects.
I think that’s what there gonna do.
In the long run. Adding Moncada and Benny to the line up it is more valuable than any once a week pitcher would be.

I must be smoking what he is smoking cause lefties are not suited for Fenway. Lester was good and Hill had 1 good year but you gotta go back to Bruce Hurst for me to remember another really good lefty in Fenway. I am not a Red Sox fan but I can’t recall anybody else. Even Price is not David Price like this year.

I wonder if the gun was juiced or if it was legit. There has been controversy in the past with that. If it is true, that is really impressive. What’s his change-up, 96 mph? lol

Hold your enthusiasm. Kopech got busted last year for using an illegal “stimulant” so hopefully he doesn’t repeat his boo-boo.

That’s a good question and would be.. Except they had him topping out at 103mph in his 1st rehab start at Salem an sitting at 97-101mph the entire start with his fb, from what was reported on several different guns..

The 105mph was reported by BA as was mentioned above in a post. I watched his 1st rehab that was 4 innings on MiLB tv. He was sort of wild at 1st, then calmed down and it was all she wrote. Struck out side on like 9-10 pitches in his 4th and final inning, then heavy thunderstorm came in and he was pulled.

On a day when no baseball is being played and the other top stories are fringe players shuttling between the majors and minors, this is about the best that you can hope for. Look on the bright side – it could be another Tehran rumor

Trey Ball was also a highly touted lefty the Red Sox drafted a few years back. Groome has excellent stuff but he could be a bust if he can’t handle real competition. Relax, Red Sox fans, before getting this kid’s Cooperstown plaque ordered.

Ball only pitched 2 years of HS ball, he was a standout right fielder, your comparison is ludicrous
