East Notes: Red Sox, Volquez, Yankees, Mets

By charliewilmoth | May 13, 2017 at 2:59pm CDT

The Red Sox have struggled at third base this year, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe writes. The team planned to have Pablo Sandoval as their main third baseman, a dicey proposition since Sandoval missed most of last season. The team has since lost Sandoval, Brock Holt and Marco Hernandez to injury, forcing Josh Rutledge into duty at the hot corner. Red Sox third baseman have struggled to the tune of a .237/.286/.320 line this season. Holt (vertigo) is on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Pawtucket, though, and could soon to the big leagues, as WEEI’s Rob Bradford tweets. Here’s more from the East divisions.

  • The Marlins have announced that they’ve reinstated righty Edinson Volquez from the 10-day DL and optioned fellow righty Brian Ellington to Triple-A New Orleans. Volquez will start tonight against the Braves. Volquez spent the minimum required time on the DL while dealing with a blister issue. He’s posted a 4.71 ERA, 10.0 K/9 and 6.9 BB/9 in 28 2/3 innings thus far this season for Miami.
  • The Yankees’ three-game losing streak at the hands of the Reds and Astros raises a number of questions about the team, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. CC Sabathia has struggled lately, Chris Carter hasn’t hit well in place of the injured Greg Bird at first base, and the team is relying heavily on young players. Of course, as Sherman points out, it was never realistic to hope that the Yankees would sustain the blistering 21-9 pace at which they began the season.
  • The injury-riddled Mets could use relief help, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News writes. Jeurys Familia’s injury is just the latest for a Mets team that has had more than its fair share, and the team doesn’t have reinforcements on the way from Triple-A. Ackert mentions White Sox closer David Robertson as a potential possibility, but notes that Robertson can block a potential trade to the Mets as part of his limited no-trade clause. Besides, as she points out, significant trades rarely happen this early in the season.

    Ceccini for Maurer

Both of the Ceccini brothers have turned out to be bust prospects unfortunately. I don’t think anybody in the game front office wise sees either Gavin, or Garin as worthy of more than a retread.

Wait, how is Gavin a bust? He’s had 6 major league at bat, 2 hits (both doubles). I don’t think he’ll turn into anything special, but you can’t call him a bust after SIX at bats.

They passed on Seager for him and he was supposed to be the SS of the future for the mets. He is definitely a bust but doesn’t mean he cant still contribute

Garin never hit above AA and Gavin, who did hit in the comedy league PCL his 1st season, is not hitting doing it this year and never had any power, speed or glove, just like his brother.

It’s a shame because both were touted as such hyped up kids in High school and coached by their father. Will the same thing befall the Renfroe brothers David (already a fail) and Hunter, a free swinging player, also from the PCL who never saw a pitch he didn’t like and does not walk with the padres?

Highly touted brother combinations out of high school are not always sure things.. here is proof.

the mets passing on Seager has nothing to do with anything, also Ceccini was probably never gonna be the SS of the future

Okay, that STILL doesn’t make him a bust.

Once again, he’s had 6 ML at bats.

He didn’t live up to the hype as a minor leaguer. What makes u think he’s gonna break out in the bigs?

It’s a little early for the Mets to think about a major trade. Especially with a team who asks so much In return.

I’m afraid they need to ride this season out. The Mets chose to live or die by their young pitching staff and it’s not worked out for them. But a major trade could cause further problems down the line with no guarantee of results this year

Lol how dare NYY lose three straight.
The loss to CIN was the 6th of a 6 game road trip, and the 2 other losses were against a very good Houston team that sent their ace to the mound for the first game(Keuchel) and faced a rookie the next

I was wondering for years why Giradi has to be so stubborn as to be putting in the same losers who are buzz kills, like Chris Carter, and Stephen Drew, etc. in the game.
O yeah, and watch Giradi give CC 10 more starts, lmao, before he proves how wonderful he can pitch and turn himself around!!
This manager also should never ever keep Holliday out of a inter league game either!! Just keep putting him in at first because Carter’s signing wasa Bust!!
I have high hopes though come this summer deadline, we shall have a couple of stud pitchers and hopefully another first baseman. We all knew this outcome would happen when management let every single available pitcher pass them by!! THEY didnt have to break the bank either.
One more thing to vent, lol, I guess Bird cannot hit in the majors, only in Spring Training.
There are plenty of hurt players hitting!!
    Ok, I feel better now!!

it will be if they don’t leave Carter on the highway somewhere. put CC in the Pen and get a couple of pitchers who can pitch!!..Also on their bucket list should be getting rid of Larry Rothschild who can’t even fix a nail in the wall!!
I am hoping Chapman is okay.

Eileen, thats just scratching the surface! The year just started and already I’m looking through the free agency list. Lol. Tanaka isn’t pounding out K’s (thanks to everyone getting familiar with his killer sinker), CC was better when he was a drunk, Pineda is doing what he always does (strikeout high numbers and give up runs). The only real shocker is that both kids are doing well. Severino is a bigger shock than Montgomery. Then again, this is only the beginning. If they were smart they’d look in to the trade rumors we’ve been hearing about. Garrit Cole and Quintana are half decent choices to fill the void when (not IF… When) one of our guys decline. I could go on and on but it’s 4am and this beer won’t drink itself lol

They lose three games and it’s time to raise questions? By that standard, the Mets should completely fire sale for the next 5 years.

The Yankees lost to Houston’s best pitchers. Tomorrow they face the back end of Houston’s rotation against Severino and Tanaka, so we’ll see if we can sweep the double header which is very possible.

Ohhhh wowwww so we lose a few games and the world stops spinning? Lol. I have to agree with a few comments here. Starting Carter at 1B instead of Holiday was stupid and reckless managing on Girardi’s part. Especially when Holiday was and has always been a proven hitter, older or not. They need to organize the lineup and stop putting pressure on Judge by putting him higher in the lineup. And what’s with putting Sanchez at the second spot?? Ugh..

Re. the Red Sox woes @ 3 B.

What about a trade for Longoria–DD might as well clear out the remainder of the Minor League talent and get another proven fielder and hitter that could lead them to a championship. Rutledge @ 3 B , with an .879 Fielding % in 13 games is not going to give any confidence to the Sox staff.. Longoria’s .979 is what we have needed and can you imagine him with the rest of the lineup.
Todd Frazier would be a welcome addition even with a .181 BA. You know that would improve in Boston.
Devers (3 B @ AA), Johnson ( AAA) or Beeks (AA) in addition to Trevor Kelley @ Greenville (Low A)..
Come on DD this staff has been great get what’s needed!!!!!

All these questions that the other fans are saying are
coming up now because the Yanks lost 3 in a row are questions that have already been there since last year, or b4, SAME questions are coming up again!!!

No need to panic. Devers will get a shot in Sept. and if he looks good could make the playoff roster like Boegarts did in 2013. Without Price and the worst 3b play possible they are only 2 games back. DD is building this team for the long haul. Only Moreland (who will be replaced by Sam Travis), Chris Young & Abad are FA’s next year.
