SUNDAY, 12:41pm: Add the Brewers to the list of teams interested in Garcia, per Crasnick (Twitter link).
10:34am: Minnesota and Atlanta continue to discuss Garcia, but the Twins are also focusing on starters from other teams, Wolfson indicates (on Twitter).
SATURDAY, 1:32pm: Righty Nick Burdi was involved in the deal, Rosenthal tweets. Burdi had Tommy John surgery in late May and will be out until next season. The Braves already obviously would have been aware of that, and they haven’t shied away from acquiring injured pitchers in the past (such as Max Fried, who they got when they traded Justin Upton to the Padres in the 2014-15 offseason). So perhaps the player whose medicals they took issue with was someone else. It’s still possible, though, that they saw less than they hoped for in Burdi’s medical reports. The 24-year-old Burdi had an 0.53 ERA, 10.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 17 relief innings with Double-A Chattanooga before the injury.
11:30am: Talks between the Braves and Twins came to an impasse due to a medical issue the Braves had with a prospect they would have received from the Twins, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal tweets. The two sides are currently considering other options, though they could return to the table at some point.
FRIDAY 8:34pm: All indications are that Garcia will take the ball for Atlanta tonight. The front office is in contact with a half-dozen organizations regarding the lefty at present, Feinsand tweets.
3:04pm: It is still possible that the Twins will acquire Garcia, though MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that such a trade is “not probable.”
2:35pm: Garcia will make his scheduled start for the Braves tonight against the Dodgers, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets. Talks are still ongoing between the Braves and other teams about Garcia’s services, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports, so a late deal could still happen. Aaron Blair was scratched from a minor league start yesterday and is in Los Angeles to make a spot outing should Garcia be scratched at the last minute.
9:32am: Teams besides the Twins are still talking to the Braves about Garcia, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports (via Twitter). It isn’t known who the other clubs in the mix are, though earlier today, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweeted that the Astros and Royals were two of the the teams that had previously shown interest in Garcia. Kansas City, however, now appears to be more focused on acquiring a right-handed starter.
TODAY, 7:14am: No deal has been finalized between the two sides as of this morning, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports.
THURSDAY, 8:24pm: Minnesota is “very likely” to take over all of Garcia’s remaining salary (about $4.7MM), per 1500 ESPN’s Darren Wolfson (via Twitter).
7:42pm: For what it’s worth, Garcia is still in a Braves’ uniform tonight, Kevin McAlpin of the Braves Radio Network tweets. Of course, that doesn’t mean the deal isn’t nearing completion; he isn’t scheduled to start until tomorrow.
6:44pm: It’s possible the Twins will be receiving an additional player in the deal, per LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune (via Twitter), though it seems that’d likely be a lower-level player of some kind.
6:12pm: It seems the swap is done except for the formalities. It’s being finalized right now, tweets Jon Heyman of Fan Rag, while MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger adds on Twitter that the sides are currently waiting on medical assessments. Atlanta will be receiving a minor-league player in return, he adds.
5:51pm: Minnesota is closing in on a deal for Garcia, Rosenthal tweets.
5:46pm: Amidst ongoing rumors that Braves starter Jaime Garcia may be dealt in short order, the Twins are engaged in discussions on the veteran southpaw, according to Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network (via Twitter). It’s not apparent at this point whether other teams are still involved or whether an agreement could be nearing completion.
Garcia is probably one of the better rental starters on a market that doesn’t have many of great interest (pending the availability of Yu Darvish). I’d generally concur with MLBTR’s readers, who rated him alongside Jeremy Hellickson, and behind Trevor Cahill and Marco Estrada, in a poll yesterday.
Over his 106 innings this year, Garcia has pitched to a 4.33 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 along with a healthy 54.7% groundball rate. At times, previously, he has shown a fair bit more, but that sort of output likely represents a reasonable expectation moving forward for Garcia, who the Braves acquired over the winter after a long run with the Cardinals.
Those looking for upside will note that Garcia does carry an 11.5% swinging-strike rate that is more reminiscent of his prime-level work. And it’s important to note that he has been plenty durable recently after experiencing several seasons marred by shoulder troubles.
While Garcia doesn’t necessarily excite, he should represent a sturdy option for a club that needs good innings down the stretch. That’s the case for Minnesota, which finds itself firmly in the AL Central (and AL Wild Card) hunt despite a generally underwhelming overall performance — particularly from its pitching staff.
The Twins just lost Phil Hughes back to the DL, where Hector Santiago also resides. Neither has been effective when healthy, and the same holds of Kyle Gibson and Adalberto Mejia — whose palatable 4.22 ERA isn’t supported by the peripherals. That leaves just two reliable rotation pieces in Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios. The Twins did just add former Braves hurler Bartolo Colon, though it’s anybody’s guess what he’ll provide.
While the Minnesota front office has focused more on the possibility of acquiring a controllable starter, it has acknowledged that rentals could also be pursued in the right circumstances. “We’re probably not going to be inclined to spend lavishly on short-term assets,” GM Thad Levine explained recently, “but we would be very open to spending aggressively on assets that we could use to propel our team forward this year and for years to come.”
Garcia would help shore things up for the rest of the season, but he’ll head to free agency thereafter. If Levine’s statement still holds, then, it seems reasonable to anticipate that the Twins won’t be sending a big package to acquire Garcia — who, it should be noted, is earning at a hefty $12MM rate this year. Taking on some salary now, though, may be the preferred route to boosting the team’s chances at earning a surprise postseason spot, particularly if the demand for the few available top-end controllable pitchers is as great as it seems.

Cannot see him staying through the deadline. Next few days will tell how what little chance team has left to make a push.
jbaker3170
Well no kidding. Thus why the headline says Twins are close to acquiring him.
ffjsisk
The initial headline said Twins were “in talks”. Kind of like the Red Sox were “in talks” for Frazier. They update the headlines as the story evolves. Smart ass.
Gogerty
He felt better about his comment, all that matters.
ffjsisk
Jbaker, what’s the headline say now?
nmendoza44
Smart.
Big Green Egg
Blair scratched from his AAA start is a good sign something is close.
squish
And braves wouldn’t want him to lose value getting bombed by dodgers tom and they don’t want to say they don’t have faith in him but not playing him vs LAD either
Jon429
It’s also a sign the Braves will definitely lose tomorrow vs the Dodgers. I guess throw Blair to the wolves tomorrow and promote Lucas Sims or Matt Wisler next week.
ttinsley1434
They were going to lose regardless.
black69
Yeah, looks like it. The Dodgers are looking so good in tonight’s game.

Braves trade him ,then follow with Afdams to Yanks !
Hiro
Adams to the Yankees doesn’t make too much sense now.
padresfan
They still need a 1st baseman
Do you seriously think head case can hold that position ?
petfoodfella
Yankee’s won’t want Adams, at least not the cost that it would take for Atlanta to move him there.
Adams is staying, 1b next year if not traded in the off-season.
myaccount
Padresfan, why couldn’t he? He’s been above average since June 1.
thegreatcerealfamine
For the love of God quit posting this!
halos101
This makes so much sense
twins33
Not a fan of this, but they do need rotation help since it’s been an on going merry go round at the back of the rotation.
If it happens, it better barely cost anything. Average pitcher and rental.
schwing
They should call up Gonsalves since they’re worried about Romeros innings
twins33
I’m all for that, but he’s not on the 40 man so I’m not sure they’ll add him until they have to…which I think is this offseason.
I believe he deserves a shot this year though. Give him a taste before 2018 when he’ll hopefully be there long term.
johnnygringo
DFA Breslow…that will open up a 40,and 25 roster spot
twins33
I’m fine with that or Belisle
docmilo5
The 40 man isn’t a concern. Garcia isn’t on their 40 man, either.
twins33
The discussion was about Gonsalves joining the Twins rotation.
johnnygringo
Belisle has been one of our best relievers the last 6-8 weeks…..just saying
jd396
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gonsalves up by the end of the year a little bit. There isn’t 40 man room at the moment but there’s several spots that could foreseeably open up.
Jacob99
When Gibson is your third starter an “average” MLB LHP SP is a massive upgrade.
twins33
We’ll see. NL pitchers who aren’t great tend to turn into Kyle Gibson in the AL.
The cost is all I care about.
johnnygringo
add 0.25-0.50 to his ERA,for converting to the AL,and he is really average-below average
schwing
Doesn’t make much sense for the twins, not a young pitcher or a controllable pitcher, hopefully they don’t give up much for him.
Gogerty
Couldn’t see more than a prospect, 15-20 in organization.
johnnygringo
Phil Hughes and Breslow maybe…..
sportsfan 2
As a Braves fan I think Coppy will be able to get a very good return for Garcia. Coppy doesn’t trade players for blow face value.
chesteraarthur
Andrelton Simmons?
noraj9
Sean Newcomb?
chesteraarthur
Yes. Sean Newcomb was a poor return for andrelton simmons. Good work.
petfoodfella
Eh. Simmons was fine to move. Atlanta fans don’t miss him. Newcomb will provide more long-term.
Even still, there’s enough +++ from the Shelby Miller trade to eat a few bad ones. lol
Jon429
I think Hector Olivera might’ve evened out the Shelby Miller trade, especially if Alex Wood is for real.
noraj9
That’s not how word association works…
wartdog
I bet you get invited to a lot of parties
Angels86ed
I’m not sure about that. If he can get his control issues straightened out, he can be a front of the rotation starter, which would be a great return. Tall SPs, especially lefties, take longer to develop control.
UGA_Steve
LOL. Chester, you are exactly what plagues boards everywhere. A fan who means their best, but can’t see past one or two years. Newcomb is young and already putting up numbers better than HOF’ers at the same age. Judging this trade now is ridiculous.
I bet your reply to the John Smoltz trade would have been .. John Smoltz?
Too early to say you are right or wrong, but the Braves had organization depth at SS (even before the Swanson trade), but were light on high-ceiling pitching prospects. And I absolutely loved watching Andrelton play and wish we had him back. That being said, the trade made sense for the Braves long term.
ryanw-2
Braves fans don’t miss a player with a 4.4 WAR on July 20? Probably finishes about 6.5 or just above. Could even reach 7 if he swings a hotter bat down the stretch. I think in the long run both teams will win that trade.
Dookie Howser, MD
I missed Simmons before he could hit. Miss him more now that his wRC+ is up to 111
bravesfan
Chsteraarthur OMG STOP TROLLING! Newcomb was a good return for Simmons. at the time he was like a top 25 overall prospect. If that was today, you would say they are overpaying. Shut your trap.
kster224488k
Newcomb will be a stud, and Dansby will be a cornerstone for years to come.. Simmons will regress to his previous offensive output, and was never clutch..he was a strikeout and double play/pop up waiting to happen…he will continue to dazzle defensively..but Dansby can make all the plays he made and is a team leader to boot. Losing Kimbrel was a much worse move by Coppy not to mention Alex Wood for the wife beater. Dansby is a rookie and his mistakes are all due to his inexperience. Just like Sean Newcomb..he has ace material, and over the next few years will prove it.
braves25
You almost had me convinced you knew what you were talking about until….”but Dansby can make all the plays he (Andrelton) made”…..
Simmons is the best defensive short stop we have seen since Ozzie Smith. There isn’t much to debate there. Dansby is solid yes, but he can’t make every play Andrelton Simmons can!!
Zach725
Simmons didn’t have a bat, teams value offense 10X more than defense right now.
chesteraarthur
Yeah obviously, cuz you know, 15 of the 25 qualifying ss this year have a wRC+ under 100. Teams really value offense 10x more at the ss position. Strong argument backed up by hard factual evidence that you have there.
Gogerty
I love you chesteraarthur.
MakeATLGreatAgain
Now we have Dansby, who doesn’t have a bat or a glove.
casmith12
Come on… you can’t get down on Dansby because of this season. He’ll adjust, and become a solid quality SS that any team would love to have. Simmons is an unbelievable defensive SS, but I think the braves are more than happy with where they’re at now.
MakeATLGreatAgain
Meh, I’m fine with Dansby. He’ll eventually get it.
He just needs to be in AAA for awhile.
casmith12
I’m a bit torn on that, on one hand I totally agree with you, but the other, I’m just not sure if he’ll be able to work on hitting solid sliders down there. You know?
Now, I definitely think they called him up too soon.
Zach725
See Matt Kemp, JD Martinez, I can go on.
ryanw-2
More like every MLB team is looking to the future of player evaluation and assessing all the elements that make up overall win value. You might be amazed at what you find when you look at Andrelton’s career WAR. 6.4 per 162 games. Did you know that in his rookie season he posted 2.9 in just 49 games?
casmith12
Coppy could’ve/should’ve gotten more from the Simmons trade, and the Wood trade was a bust, but other than that, Coppy has made some amazing trades for the Braves. You can’t deny that at all.
Thegreatandpowerfulsimba
BREAKING NEWS: Just in coppy receives an 8ball to the face for a few months of garcia trade pending the inclusion of a carton of newports… Fanbase understands bc garcia trade saves millions and frees up a spot/opportunity for a guy to earn his 40man for another season. MILB PLAYER icing on the cake.
casualatlfan
I’m personally okay with this, and hoping the Braves get a decent return for him. Not expecting too much, of course, since he is a rental who hasn’t been too great recently.
padresfan
That’s interesting
Twins are kicking but this year
And the braves are realizing they are not there yet
Twins are the big surprise this year no matter their record at the end
Braves fan 4
This might be a great deal for coppy to get some more talent
johnnygringo
what a Joke, just more proof Terry Curly Ryan ,is still pulling the strings for the Twins
twins33
He works for another team, so no.
I don’t like the idea of getting him either but if they give up practically nothing then I’m fine with it.
johnnygringo
Funny deal, while Terry Curly Ryan is employed by the Phillies, he still has an office at Target field……aint that a kick in the pants,as reported by the pioneer press in December, by Rhett in Febuary, and the Indians broadcast crew talked about how during the last games in minnesota, they had a long chat with Terry in his office
twins33
Yes, but he can’t work for the Twins. It’s against league rules. So this is basically crazy talk.
johnnygringo
look at our rule 5 pick n deal (for cash),look at the off season moves2 free agents, and dumpster diving, look at our draft …our 4th rounder throws 86-88 mph,and can reach 90 mph…..
mean while the Nats 15th rounder works 96-97 mph as a starter, and triple digits as a reliever…….just saying me thinks Curly is whispering into the Dynamic Duos ears…..
Heck we even have a lower payroll this year, then last years
twins33
If you expect to find another Johan in the rule 5 draft then I think you’ll be waiting a long time.
Free agency was full of guys not worth it. Could have used some BP upgrades but I wanted no SP and they didn’t need more than bench bats for the offense.
Ryan was never a part of the draft. He let the draft guys run it. The new guys don’t do the same.

LOL you guys are way overvaluing a pure rental starter with almost $6 million in money still left on his contract! I bet twins will eat the money and give up a guy outside our top 20
BravesBoi
Definitely will get at least one player from inside an organizations top 20
Braves fan 4
I promise you your gonna give something up buddy do you know whos calling the shot in Atlanta
takeyourbase
What does it matter who calls the shots there. That guy doesn’t just tell other front offices what they’re going to do. Braves fans….smh
Sweetleftyswing
Am happy for the Twins to get him or anyone that can pitch 6 innings and give up less than 5 runs. There are not many starters the Twins have had the last few years that can do that consistently.
Compared to Milone, Santiago, Hughes, Nolasco, Pelfrey, Correia, Deduno, Pino, I’ll take my chances with Garcia who has had some good seasons

Would the twins not be interested in Adams also?

Nope got the former all star holding down 1st.
Zach725
Blair scratched from his start in AAA.
vacommish
If the Braves are getting a ML only, better be for a top bat like Kirilloff.
schwing
For this guy and his salary, nope.
vacommish
They do like TJ survivors. Not like he was AAA ready. And the Braves can eat $s so that won’t be an issue.
twins33
Doubt they’d give up on him before he even really plays even though he wasn’t drafted by these guys.
Shouldn’t be a top 10 prospect, but I guess it could be. Hard to gauge the new front office.
bravesfan
It most definitely could be a top 10 organizational prospect, but not overall in the MLB..
twins33
Obviously. Twins don’t have a top 10 overall. Don’t see how that even would have been implied.
To me he’s not worth a top 10 guy from any org unless it’s a bottom 5 farm system. Think some Braves guy is saying that the hold up is Garcia’s medicals. Twins didn’t like what they saw and wanted the Braves to pay more money instead of none.
Seems odd to me to cry over, what…five million? I’d just give them an even lesser prospect if the medical was that bad.
noraj9
Hey Twins fans, do you have a low A pitcher that needs TJ or a 2014 1st-3rd round pick who recently switched positions and isn’t hitting well but had potential years ago?
TwinsTapir
That’s our entire organization.
darkstar61
Well, that takes the most secure and consistent starter off the rental board.
Surprised the Twins were the team he landed with tho. Really thought Indians or Yankees were more likely destinations.
johnnygringo
bullcrunch Trevor Cahill, younger, better ,and cheaper salary
darkstar61
…and can’t pitch but a few games before having to hit the DL (Back 1st, then shoulder, so far this year)
stl_cards16 2
That’s actually a hilarious reason to prefer Jaime Garcia to someone.
darkstar61
Lol, no kidding right!
But that’s this years crappy rental market for you…
wartdog
Maybe Im just jaded cuz he sucked in Atlanta but is Trevor Cahill suddenly good again? He was good early in his career then was really bad for awhile. Are teams going to buy into this recent success or value him somewhere in between bad and good Cahill.
Priggs89
They might buy into the recent success, but they probably won’t pay full price for it. Too many injury concerns.
Braves fan 4
Lots of players do that at Atlanta take Alex wood for example
BravesBoi
Alex Wood was never bad in ATL. He just wasn’t at the level of ridiculous that he is this year.
CNichols
Interested to see if this is a straight salary dump or if ATL is eating any of that contract. Unless ATL is sending money this return is going to be very light.
vacommish
They have tons of budget space so I’d expect the Braves to eat money to get a better player in return.
steelerbravenation
Come on who is it !!!!!!
knoxchristopher79
Does Medlen make his return??
RunDMC
If so, hopefully just as a long reliever where we really need him. Andrew Albers has looked really strong at AAA off most prospect lists.
squish
Well Albers is like 31 or 32 so that’s why he’s not a prospect
wartdog
Ya too old but has pitched great. If we trade any starters and aren’t ready to promote any of the youngens he should get a hard look at a callup to fill a spot
steelerbravenation
Now sayin we are giving a minor leaguer with Garcia sounds like we are getting somebody good. Fingers crossed it’s Garver
schwing
The twins also have no catching depth in the minors so I would highly doubt it.
Gogerty
Time will tell. The article updated last time I exited. And Chesteraarthur is my hero.
jlittle15
Any Twins fans wanna tell a Braves fan who you wouldn’t want to be traded? Just trying to see if the return is good.
Luke
Garver, Romero, gonsalves, minier, obviously Gordon, a few others.
Something like Diaz seems right,
twins33
These are the guys I like: Gordon, Gonsolves, Romero, Garver, Kirilloff, Thorpe, Diaz, Javier, Wade, Rortvedt
squish
I want garver krilloff or rortvedt. Although knowing coppy it will be a pitcher so
RunDMC
Burdi
steelerbravenation
Hearing JR Murphy
schwing
I would be ecstatic as a twins fan.
Braves fan 4
Why do you think that
RunDMC
I am going to go with Nick Burdi. Barber is an obvious choice but we actually have a lot of C depth at the minor league level, just not nearly ready.
schwing
Well if it is burdi he won’t be pitching for quite a while
RunDMC
The only thing the Braves love more than homegrown boys are TJ survivors. Dr. Andrews needs to eat.
schwing
Mr Andrews did not do the surgery
RunDMC
Sure, but he’s even likelier to need additional surgeries now he’s had 1. Medlen, Beachy and Venters had 7 amongst them (if memories serves me). That year Andrews upgraded to the 7-class.
steelerbravenation
Change of scenery type of guy for a rental. If Murphy is the return j hope we are not giving any cash back.
Still hoping for Garver though.
baseball10
What is the holdup in this thing? Names are usually released pretty quickly
twins33
At least in the past, the Twins preferred to not have names out there on their end until it was completely official. Guys can fail physicals.
Braves fan 4
It said it’s pending physical
stymeedone
Who do they think they are? The Orioles?
TwinsHomer
My prediction:
Braves eat no money and receive Akil Baddoo and Jake Reed
schwing
Nope, if the braves eat no money they are getting someone like Daniel palka and Engelb Vielma.
schwing
Or*
schaeferboom12
No way Palka is moved. Garcia is not worth that unless we get Matt Adams too
schaeferboom12
Unless Adams iss coming with, no palka
schwing
I feel like your overvaluing Palka. He’s basically the equivalent of Chris Carter. Lotta power but swings and misses alot. As a fellow twins fan I find him expendable.
schaeferboom12
I like him because he actually has a decent average. His fielding isn’t star quality, but I think he’s worth more than Garcia
sportsfan 2
You guys can take it for what it worth but a Braves fan on Twitter just tweeted that he is hearing that The braves will get Travis Blankenhorn.
schwing
No real loss their for twins territory.
schwing
There
twins33
Would think they would pull him from the game he’s playing in right now.
Still could be him, but that I know of he’s still playing.
912boy
Maybe it is Garver and we are throwing n Alex Jackson
schwing
Just updated saying twins would take on the rest of Garcia’s contract. AKA J R Murphy was traded for him

Why would we get john Ryan murphy he sucks
pdubs2907
Because Jaime Garcia sucks
Braves fan 4
You again good lord did you do some research today

fun fact, ATL has a better run differential than MIN.
MIN should be happy they are competitive. keep your prospects until you have a real chance.

sad if true. sure ATL could have gotten a better offer somewhere else

Trust coppy to get the best we can
vacommish
Agreed – a journeyman minor league C would be a terribly disappointing return for Garcia before the deadline.
junkmanj
Yeah there’s no way the Braves trade him for that. They gave up 3 top 30 prospects just to acquire him. It doesn’t even make sense at all.
antonio bananas
he has a lot less value now than be did simply because he only has 2 months of control.
Im not sure the 3 guys ATL gave up were top 30. not in that farm. if so, they were 24th and up. middling prospects at best.
i would hope ATL gets at least a Gant-type prospect in return.l
junkmanj
They were #17, #21, #29

according to who? gant and the other guy were 24 year olds with RP upside (other guy had like a 6.00 era in AAA last I checked),0 and Dykstra is a 2B with a lower slugging than on base (and his on base is below .300).
gant had a 40 fv on fangraphs. the other 2 had a sub 40. fangraphs listed the top 32 ATL prospects. top 19 all 45 fv and above. all top 32 at least 40. so at best, from fangraphs, braves traded 1 top 32 guy (who is no higher than 20). oh and they put gant as STLs 24th best. ATL has a much betted farm so needless to say, gant would be even lower in that system.
either those rankings you saw were poor or the braves are much smarted than the whatever publication you saw (or maybe you’re using a lre 2016 list?)

junkmanj is right. there were top prospects in the braves already stout system. At the time, Chris Ellis was still considered by many to have really high potential. You can go look on MLB.com… 2016. All but Dykstra were on the cards final top 30 prospect list for 2016. Most people use mlb rankings when talking about top prospects.

Looks like a pass on the Braves front. and it should be *you’re welcome*

It appears the Braves are selling. Even though, there’s always the thought that they could have some sort of agreement in place to acquire a proven controllable starter. As acquiring one of those starters would require the Braves to trade one of their starters (or send down Newcomb.)
Its highly unlikely. And I honestly just hope we sell. But you never know with this front office for the Braves. I’m always confused. Yet, always entertained!
vacommish
They’ll be doing both. Selling short term pieces (who they signed for just this reason), while looking for long term controllable ones.

And Brandon Phillips was just pulled out of the Braves game for no apparent reason.

seckert15
Garcia will get crushed in the American League. Never thought he was that good. Surprised he is still around. Good move by Braves.
the.sophisticant
you know guys when you think about it ‘dookie” isn’t that bad of a world. You got ‘DO’…you got ‘OK’ and you got “Kie” which is a cool american-Japanese name. So you got, Do Ok Kie.
bravesfan
Bold prediction time: I wouldn’t be surprised if we get Kirilloff.. but that is me in fantasy land also. My true bold prediction is look for the braves to get someone like Burdi and Hildenberger. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got both! Garver is a guy to keep an eye on also. I just got to think we are gonna get someone close to MLB ready if this trade happens. Doesn’t have to be a big time name like Kirilloff, but it should be one or two of their top 30.
schwing
Pass the dutchie hombre
vacommish
I’m thinking Kiriloff, but it may cost the Braves both Garcia and Vizcaino.
bravesfan
Yea, I mean. The idea of getting Kiriloff really isn’t that far fetch, but you are right we would have to give up more no doubt. The prob is if you include vizcaino, the twins would prob have to throw in some more lower rank prospects. 1 maaayyyybbbeeee two. Someone like Burdi.. As a braves fan, I like Vizcaino a lot, but I truly don’t think he’s anything special anymore. Good pitcher, good bullpen piece, shows flashes of being that shut down closer.. but truly going to be a Setup man or closer for a weak bullpen type guy.
RunDMC
Burdi and Kiriloff can go through TJ surgery rehab together.
braves25
If both Garcia and Viz are traded the Braves need to get more then Kiriloff! Viz should bring him and more by himself due to his team control.
bravesfan
I mean, I’m a braves fan also bud, but I’m attempting to be realistic. Kiriloff would be a nice pickup in this trade, then 1 or two top 30 organizational prospects would round it off just find. Viz for Kiriloff… yea… idk man. I think that’s a good trade talk starting conversation, but I don’t think it would make a deal happen. If he was our closer, and having a better overall year… yea.. then we would require much more. but a setup man with limited closing experience… idk
wartdog
Viz is having a fine year, its just a matter of staying healthy
Gogerty
Things fall apart in discussions with Twins? Or more teams really hopping in?
bravesfan
looks like medical concerns and more teams hopping in.
CNichols
I don’t get why, theres not a lot of incentive to hop in and bid the price up… Hellickson is basically the same quality of pitcher with a similar amount of $ left on his contract. If you don’t get Garcia you can probably get him for a similar price.
bravesfan
maybe experience, wanting a lefty in the rotation vs a right? Right now you have mostly rhp, half of which are brutal statistically. even garcia is an upgrade from Mejia who isn’t pitching all that well either.. You could also consider maybe they go after both hellickson and Garcia… that would dramatically improve their current rotation and most likely wouldn’t require all that much to make it happen.
CNichols
Those are all pretty solid points.
I guess I was thinking more along the lines of why a 3rd team would come in to try to get Garcia. If you’re another team looking for a SP and the Braves are and asking you to beat the Twins offer, you could easily say no thanks and call Philly or SD. Its a weak rental pitching market, but there are a decent amount of backend guys available.
Sky14
Garcia is pretty much a lateral move to Meija, who’s pitched decently of late. That being said, he is still an upgrade to the Gibson, Santiago and Colon’s they’ve trotted out on the backend.
bravesfan
He’s not a lateral move. Most of his numbers suggest he will give your team a better chance to win over Meija. Meija still stays in the rotation though. and by no means am i saying Garcia is a huge upgrade to Meija… but he is an update. Immediate #3 starter, possible #2 if the rookie starts to show signs of struggling.
twins33
I agree he’d be the third best starter on the Twins, but he has a 4.50 ERA for the last year and a half and that’s in the NL.
He could come over to the AL and be better than Kyle Gibson, but I’d be surprised if it’s a huge upgrade since he’s a 4/5 in the NL.
southi
I read in one comment section of one of the multiple blogs discussing Garcia and the Twins that the hold up was on a medical report concerning a minor leaguer. All speculation and rumor at this point but I could totally see that type of situation come up.
notorious623
Please God tell me the Astros aren’t actually interested in Garcia… that trade would make ZERO sense. IF the Astros are going to go get a SP, it needs to be a clear upgrade over one of Peacock, Fiers, or Morton (Which Garcia most definitely is not). Personally, I think the Astros are fine in the rotation if McHugh comes back healthy. They need to go get someone like Britton (and maybe another reliever). Having said that, if the A’s are open to dealing Sonny Gray without the Astros giving up Kyle Tucker, they should do it. Maybe Fisher, Martes and another smaller prospect?
bravesfan
I don’t think they should sell on their young hitting to get Gray. That’s something you can’t get enough of. Should sell young pitching either. Houstons in a rare position where they can be good for a very long time and have players in the minors to fill gaps as the become available.
I’m sorta with you, they don’t need to make a move. They can absolute get Garcia though. He’ll fit well enough, although you’re right, he’s not really an upgrade. But it’s not like you would be giving up much for him and the returns should be solid. But if I had to guess, the astros won’t ultimately go get him
smallball75
I see no advantage to having this southpaw in the starting rotation. Maybe they are trying to view him as a replacement for SIPP ? Definitely not worth giving up young talent when he is at best, what you essentially already have on the roster in the 4/5 hole.
smallball75
Let’s look into the riches the Astros already have ” IF HEALTHY ”
-DALLAS
-LANCE
-MCCUE
-MORTON
-FIRES
-MUSKGROVE
-PEACOCK
-DAVINSKI could start as well
I really do not understand why we are talking about selling the farm when at least two of these guys could be part of the returns in a trade and probably be #3 type starters for 75% of the league. Sure a rebuilding team wants all they can get but I would say that Jeffrey L isn’t going to sacrifice the farm.
Richard K
Amen to that
RunDMC
I take it you’re not the team’s equipment manager in charge of their names on their jerseys. I really wish you’d attempted to spell Dallas’ last name: Keuchel. I think I might have liked to see CUEKILL
Richard K
These writers are something else if the stros make any moves it will be for a couple of relief pitchers or if a package for Gray is reasonable after all the stros pounded him when they last met. If the starting pitcher being rumored is not De Grom or a higher ranked pitcher than him forget and disregard these pointless rumors. Like the stros are interested in an aging expensive Verlander these rumors can only come from Dreamland. The Astros are one of the first to place infinite value in Farm system players that eventually become ML stars the rest of the league is catching on I see (actually the Cards have been doing it for years now) Sonny Gray and Verlander defy everything Luhnow has stated being he will only make a trade where there is a definite improvement to the rotation at best these two can be only marginal at worst below inbetween exactly the same as the stros have only more expensive either by money owed or by prospects given.
bleacherbum
Jaime Garcia-watch. Lol
Never thought I’d see the day when people are sitting on pins and needles to see where this dude goes. Haha
Richard K
Here is the level of the Astros interest they make a call asking whom is available and the asking price perhaps even state on their interest in a particular player. But that is the level of interest as what it truly was is a cordial call.. By the time it makes this site as a rumor it is shown the Astros have interest in. see the difference between the two. One is cordial out of respect the second is general and only advances if the stros offer something and too date they have no offer on the plate for either Gray or Verlander let alone Garcia. But the following would catch my interest more on the level of Believable. De Grom, Britton,Brach,Hand, Wilson along with players like a Stroman (If he comes available) other than that do not expect the stros to go all in.
smallball75
Being an Astros fan – I agree. Let’s keep what we have and rule the west for the next 7 years. Use the farm and free agency to bolster the roster. The payroll is already on pace with the current players give or take a few to skyrocket as it is without adding 20 plus for verlander and SONNY will demand a big raise as well if he is acquired and has success. The almighty dollar unfortunately will bite you in the arse eventually. STAND FAST !
sportsfan 2
I am wondering from the Braves point of view wouldn’t it be better to package Garcia and Tehran together maybe even include Aroldis vizcaino or Jim Johnson and try to get between 3 and 5 team prospects in the top 5-20 range
Zach725
No, why would they do that? Viz probably going to be the closer when Jim is moved, and Teheran would go by himself for Top prospects if traded because the braves view him as a future 2 piece in the rotation.
tharrie0820
Why sell so low on Teheran? He’s shown in the past he’s good, and even this year he’s only bad at home, with a 2.50 era in 1 less road start
RunDMC
His LAD start will be big for him. He’s got the bright lights, right before the Deadline, let’s see what he does.
southi
Game only in the top of the 5th, but right now I’ll say Garcia has looked great both on the bump and at the plate LOL. He’s having a grand slam type of night (but in all seriousness I doubt any of it affects his price much).
the.sophisticant
alot of fuss over a guy with a 73mph fastball…is garcia a 5yo phenom?
Zach725
Dude has averaged about 92-93 on his FB, but ok.
the.sophisticant
that can’t be right…when i was streaking the field i’m pretty sure i beat his pitch to the plate :/ sooooooo?
Zach725
Nah it was your fairy tail imagination.
tharrie0820
Gotta love reporting these days… Better to be first than right! Went from a trade being already in place and just needing to be announced to it being unprobable. Keep up the ‘good’ work guys!
Gogerty
Gotta love good reading before a whiny comment. It is said that a physical held up original deal. Keep up the ‘good’ commenting buddy.
the.sophisticant
NOONE CARES!
Gogerty
Cared enough to come into the story to make a comment.
the.sophisticant
well played, see you’ve played don’t care/care too much before
wartdog
How did you find a cat with pink hair? Mine is just black its not fair!
piedmontblues
Awk … ward!
junkmanj
Hopefully everyone who says Jaime’s fastball is in the 80’s at least watches the game tonight..
junkmanj
Safe to say Jaime Garcia is ticked off he’s on the trading block.. He looks mad and just raked a grand slam off Alex Wood.
Gogerty
Not sure he is ticked off, he is a professional and knows the business. But that is awesome.
junkmanj
He always looks focused, but tonight he looks crazy focused.
ReverieDays
Why would he be mad about the chance to leave a bad team to go to a team that has a chance at winning?
knoxchristopher79
Needs to be taken out now if we’re gonna trade him
vacommish
Agreed
912boy
I’d say his stock is rising boys
twins_89
I wouldn’t mind Garcia for the Twins, but I wouldn’t give up much of anything to get him. At this point he would give the team 10-12 starts at an average 4th or 5th starter level (assuming he’s healthy the rest of the year). I think I’d rather give Gonsalves and/or Romero a shot long before giving up a real prospect for Garcia.
sportsfan 2
Considering how Jaime Gracia pitched in his last 2 started. Any team who will try to trade for him will have to give up a very good prospect in the 2-8 range if the Braves pay for most or entire salary. If the Braves decide not then the prospect or prospects in the 20-25 range. His hitting for an NL team that could be a real plus. Also his remaining salary 5 million for baseball organization that is not a lot of money even if you have a spending limit.
joe 44
a top 8 prospect for jamie garcia? you have to be kidding right? 12-15 starts of a number 4 or 5 starter wont cost a team a top 2-8 prospect.. i thinking more of the 15th ranked prospect range
912boy
Honestly a Braves fan but what they are paying pitchers and trading for them the league is getting crazy so if they get a prospect in the 2-8 range wouldn’t surprise me nothing surprises me with trades anymore lol
twins33
Was going to be Burdi, apparently. He’s 15-20 in the Twins system. Good reliever. Always injured. Just had TJ this year.
joe 44
that was before the draft he will be bumped down so more like 20-25 now
twins33
Okay, a problem with a Twins prospects medicals. That kind of leads me to believe it may have been Tyler Jay or Stewart.
vacommish
Or Kiriloff.
twins33
True, but I think that’s too much to give up for a rental who’s a 4/5 starter. Same with Thorpe, which is why I didn’t mention either. I know a guy with Twins connections who said that the team definitely thought Thorpe would be an overpay.
twins33
Kirilloff was a top five Twins prospect and top 100 overall before TJ so seemed very doubtful it would be him.
And the post has been updated to say it was Burdi. I like Burdi but the guy is injury after injury so I would have been fine with that. Burdi is probably in the top 15-20 range, which to me has always sounded like the max price I’d want them to pay on a 4/5 SP rental.
Braves95
Well the braves are in the drivers seat with how Garcia pitch yesterday against the best national league team. Yea it’s only one game, but twins you’re in need not the braves, so pony up those prospect
twins33
I’d be fine if they don’t. Depends on the cost. If it’s going to be too much, then it’s better for them to acquire a Sonny Gray type who’d more controllable. Even though I worry about Gray’s health.
NL_East_Rivalry
I understand where you are coming from, but the trade before last night’s game was for a 15-20 organizational prospect and Gray will cost you 2-3 top 10’s +. If the Twins need a pitcher to get them over the top they need to go get Gray before the Brewer’s do. If the Braves didn’t want Nick B., find someone else that will. Jamie Garcia isn’t the only decent back end starter out there.
twins33
Right. That I get and the price is going to be ridiculous just because of a bidding war too.
I probably wouldn’t want to pay a big price unless they can get someone better than Gray. Would just always depend on the return for any guy. Twins need a guy with a minimum of two years control at some point, whether it’s the deadline or offseason.
Rumncoke
His stock is rising. Trade him before next start.
joe 44
if Garcia’s value is half of what braves fans think it is the twins need to become sellers asap santana is a much better pitcher and kintzler has been one of the most under rated bullpen pitchers in baseball.
steelerbravenation
Forget bout the Twins that ship has sailed now I think Coppy moves him to the Yankees
sportsfan 2
I agree with you. Prospects wise the Yankees will be a much better fit then the Twins unless the Twins include Nick Gordon.
chound
If the health of the Burdi wasn’t an issue… no way. But it was, so yeah.
twins33
Why would the Twins give up a top 20 overall prospect for Garcia when they were only going to give a 15-20 in their system?
I agree that other teams probably will give up something better but if people are expecting one of the best prospects in all of baseball for Garcia then they need to stop taking the crazy pills.
joe 44
nick gordon for jamie garcia? really? the comments on the site are becoming more of a joke each day
rollbraves65
I’m ready for a trade !!
