Latest On Jaime Garcia

By Jeff Todd | July 23, 2017 at 12:41pm CDT

SUNDAY, 12:41pm: Add the Brewers to the list of teams interested in Garcia, per Crasnick (Twitter link).

10:34am: Minnesota and Atlanta continue to discuss Garcia, but the Twins are also focusing on starters from other teams, Wolfson indicates (on Twitter).

SATURDAY, 1:32pm: Righty Nick Burdi was involved in the deal, Rosenthal tweets. Burdi had Tommy John surgery in late May and will be out until next season. The Braves already obviously would have been aware of that, and they haven’t shied away from acquiring injured pitchers in the past (such as Max Fried, who they got when they traded Justin Upton to the Padres in the 2014-15 offseason). So perhaps the player whose medicals they took issue with was someone else. It’s still possible, though, that they saw less than they hoped for in Burdi’s medical reports. The 24-year-old Burdi had an 0.53 ERA, 10.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 17 relief innings with Double-A Chattanooga before the injury.

11:30am: Talks between the Braves and Twins came to an impasse due to a medical issue the Braves had with a prospect they would have received from the Twins, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal tweets. The two sides are currently considering other options, though they could return to the table at some point.

FRIDAY 8:34pm: All indications are that Garcia will take the ball for Atlanta tonight. The front office is in contact with a half-dozen organizations regarding the lefty at present, Feinsand tweets.

3:04pm: It is still possible that the Twins will acquire Garcia, though MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that such a trade is “not probable.”

2:35pm: Garcia will make his scheduled start for the Braves tonight against the Dodgers, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets.  Talks are still ongoing between the Braves and other teams about Garcia’s services, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports, so a late deal could still happen.  Aaron Blair was scratched from a minor league start yesterday and is in Los Angeles to make a spot outing should Garcia be scratched at the last minute.

9:32am: Teams besides the Twins are still talking to the Braves about Garcia, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports (via Twitter).  It isn’t known who the other clubs in the mix are, though earlier today, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweeted that the Astros and Royals were two of the the teams that had previously shown interest in Garcia.  Kansas City, however, now appears to be more focused on acquiring a right-handed starter.

TODAY, 7:14am: No deal has been finalized between the two sides as of this morning, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports.

THURSDAY, 8:24pm: Minnesota is “very likely” to take over all of Garcia’s remaining salary (about $4.7MM), per 1500 ESPN’s Darren Wolfson (via Twitter).

7:42pm: For what it’s worth, Garcia is still in a Braves’ uniform tonight, Kevin McAlpin of the Braves Radio Network tweets. Of course, that doesn’t mean the deal isn’t nearing completion; he isn’t scheduled to start until tomorrow.

6:44pm: It’s possible the Twins will be receiving an additional player in the deal, per LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune (via Twitter), though it seems that’d likely be a lower-level player of some kind.

6:12pm: It seems the swap is done except for the formalities. It’s being finalized right now, tweets Jon Heyman of Fan Rag, while MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger adds on Twitter that the sides are currently waiting on medical assessments. Atlanta will be receiving a minor-league player in return, he adds.

5:51pm: Minnesota is closing in on a deal for Garcia, Rosenthal tweets.

5:46pm: Amidst ongoing rumors that Braves starter Jaime Garcia may be dealt in short order, the Twins are engaged in discussions on the veteran southpaw, according to Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network (via Twitter). It’s not apparent at this point whether other teams are still involved or whether an agreement could be nearing completion.

"Apr

Garcia is probably one of the better rental starters on a market that doesn’t have many of great interest (pending the availability of Yu Darvish). I’d generally concur with MLBTR’s readers, who rated him alongside Jeremy Hellickson, and behind Trevor Cahill and Marco Estrada, in a poll yesterday.

Over his 106 innings this year, Garcia has pitched to a 4.33 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 along with a healthy 54.7% groundball rate. At times, previously, he has shown a fair bit more, but that sort of output likely represents a reasonable expectation moving forward for Garcia, who the Braves acquired over the winter after a long run with the Cardinals.

Those looking for upside will note that Garcia does carry an 11.5% swinging-strike rate that is more reminiscent of his prime-level work. And it’s important to note that he has been plenty durable recently after experiencing several seasons marred by shoulder troubles.

While Garcia doesn’t necessarily excite, he should represent a sturdy option for a club that needs good innings down the stretch. That’s the case for Minnesota, which finds itself firmly in the AL Central (and AL Wild Card) hunt despite a generally underwhelming overall performance — particularly from its pitching staff.

The Twins just lost Phil Hughes back to the DL, where Hector Santiago also resides. Neither has been effective when healthy, and the same holds of Kyle Gibson and Adalberto Mejia — whose palatable 4.22 ERA isn’t supported by the peripherals. That leaves just two reliable rotation pieces in Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios. The Twins did just add former Braves hurler Bartolo Colon, though it’s anybody’s guess what he’ll provide.

While the Minnesota front office has focused more on the possibility of acquiring a controllable starter, it has acknowledged that rentals could also be pursued in the right circumstances. “We’re probably not going to be inclined to spend lavishly on short-term assets,” GM Thad Levine explained recently, “but we would be very open to spending aggressively on assets that we could use to propel our team forward this year and for years to come.”

Garcia would help shore things up for the rest of the season, but he’ll head to free agency thereafter. If Levine’s statement still holds, then, it seems reasonable to anticipate that the Twins won’t be sending a big package to acquire Garcia — who, it should be noted, is earning at a hefty $12MM rate this year. Taking on some salary now, though, may be the preferred route to boosting the team’s chances at earning a surprise postseason spot, particularly if the demand for the few available top-end controllable pitchers is as great as it seems.

The initial headline said Twins were “in talks”. Kind of like the Red Sox were “in talks” for Frazier. They update the headlines as the story evolves. Smart ass.

Yankee’s won’t want Adams, at least not the cost that it would take for Atlanta to move him there.

Adams is staying, 1b next year if not traded in the off-season.

Not a fan of this, but they do need rotation help since it’s been an on going merry go round at the back of the rotation.

If it happens, it better barely cost anything. Average pitcher and rental.

I’m all for that, but he’s not on the 40 man so I’m not sure they’ll add him until they have to…which I think is this offseason.

I believe he deserves a shot this year though. Give him a taste before 2018 when he’ll hopefully be there long term.

I’m not sure about that. If he can get his control issues straightened out, he can be a front of the rotation starter, which would be a great return. Tall SPs, especially lefties, take longer to develop control.

LOL. Chester, you are exactly what plagues boards everywhere. A fan who means their best, but can’t see past one or two years. Newcomb is young and already putting up numbers better than HOF’ers at the same age. Judging this trade now is ridiculous.

I bet your reply to the John Smoltz trade would have been .. John Smoltz?

Too early to say you are right or wrong, but the Braves had organization depth at SS (even before the Swanson trade), but were light on high-ceiling pitching prospects. And I absolutely loved watching Andrelton play and wish we had him back. That being said, the trade made sense for the Braves long term.

Braves fans don’t miss a player with a 4.4 WAR on July 20? Probably finishes about 6.5 or just above. Could even reach 7 if he swings a hotter bat down the stretch. I think in the long run both teams will win that trade.

Newcomb will be a stud, and Dansby will be a cornerstone for years to come.. Simmons will regress to his previous offensive output, and was never clutch..he was a strikeout and double play/pop up waiting to happen…he will continue to dazzle defensively..but Dansby can make all the plays he made and is a team leader to boot. Losing Kimbrel was a much worse move by Coppy not to mention Alex Wood for the wife beater. Dansby is a rookie and his mistakes are all due to his inexperience. Just like Sean Newcomb..he has ace material, and over the next few years will prove it.

Simmons is the best defensive short stop we have seen since Ozzie Smith. There isn’t much to debate there. Dansby is solid yes, but he can’t make every play Andrelton Simmons can!!

Yeah obviously, cuz you know, 15 of the 25 qualifying ss this year have a wRC+ under 100. Teams really value offense 10x more at the ss position. Strong argument backed up by hard factual evidence that you have there.

More like every MLB team is looking to the future of player evaluation and assessing all the elements that make up overall win value. You might be amazed at what you find when you look at Andrelton’s career WAR. 6.4 per 162 games. Did you know that in his rookie season he posted 2.9 in just 49 games?

look at our rule 5 pick n deal (for cash),look at the off season moves2 free agents, and dumpster diving, look at our draft …our 4th rounder throws 86-88 mph,and can reach 90 mph…..

mean while the Nats 15th rounder works 96-97 mph as a starter, and triple digits as a reliever…….just saying me thinks Curly is whispering into the Dynamic Duos ears…..

Heck we even have a lower payroll this year, then last years

If you expect to find another Johan in the rule 5 draft then I think you’ll be waiting a long time.

Free agency was full of guys not worth it. Could have used some BP upgrades but I wanted no SP and they didn’t need more than bench bats for the offense.

Ryan was never a part of the draft. He let the draft guys run it. The new guys don’t do the same.

Am happy for the Twins to get him or anyone that can pitch 6 innings and give up less than 5 runs. There are not many starters the Twins have had the last few years that can do that consistently.

Compared to Milone, Santiago, Hughes, Nolasco, Pelfrey, Correia, Deduno, Pino, I’ll take my chances with Garcia who has had some good seasons

Obviously. Twins don’t have a top 10 overall. Don’t see how that even would have been implied.

To me he’s not worth a top 10 guy from any org unless it’s a bottom 5 farm system. Think some Braves guy is saying that the hold up is Garcia’s medicals. Twins didn’t like what they saw and wanted the Braves to pay more money instead of none.

Seems odd to me to cry over, what…five million? I’d just give them an even lesser prospect if the medical was that bad.

according to who? gant and the other guy were 24 year olds with RP upside (other guy had like a 6.00 era in AAA last I checked),0 and Dykstra is a 2B with a lower slugging than on base (and his on base is below .300).

gant had a 40 fv on fangraphs. the other 2 had a sub 40. fangraphs listed the top 32 ATL prospects. top 19 all 45 fv and above. all top 32 at least 40. so at best, from fangraphs, braves traded 1 top 32 guy (who is no higher than 20). oh and they put gant as STLs 24th best. ATL has a much betted farm so needless to say, gant would be even lower in that system.

either those rankings you saw were poor or the braves are much smarted than the whatever publication you saw (or maybe you’re using a lre 2016 list?)

It appears the Braves are selling. Even though, there’s always the thought that they could have some sort of agreement in place to acquire a proven controllable starter. As acquiring one of those starters would require the Braves to trade one of their starters (or send down Newcomb.)

Its highly unlikely. And I honestly just hope we sell. But you never know with this front office for the Braves. I’m always confused. Yet, always entertained!

I wouldn’t be surprised if we got both! Garver is a guy to keep an eye on also. I just got to think we are gonna get someone close to MLB ready if this trade happens. Doesn’t have to be a big time name like Kirilloff, but it should be one or two of their top 30.

Yea, I mean. The idea of getting Kiriloff really isn’t that far fetch, but you are right we would have to give up more no doubt. The prob is if you include vizcaino, the twins would prob have to throw in some more lower rank prospects. 1 maaayyyybbbeeee two. Someone like Burdi.. As a braves fan, I like Vizcaino a lot, but I truly don’t think he’s anything special anymore. Good pitcher, good bullpen piece, shows flashes of being that shut down closer.. but truly going to be a Setup man or closer for a weak bullpen type guy.

I mean, I’m a braves fan also bud, but I’m attempting to be realistic. Kiriloff would be a nice pickup in this trade, then 1 or two top 30 organizational prospects would round it off just find. Viz for Kiriloff… yea… idk man. I think that’s a good trade talk starting conversation, but I don’t think it would make a deal happen. If he was our closer, and having a better overall year… yea.. then we would require much more. but a setup man with limited closing experience… idk

I don’t get why, theres not a lot of incentive to hop in and bid the price up… Hellickson is basically the same quality of pitcher with a similar amount of $ left on his contract. If you don’t get Garcia you can probably get him for a similar price.

maybe experience, wanting a lefty in the rotation vs a right? Right now you have mostly rhp, half of which are brutal statistically. even garcia is an upgrade from Mejia who isn’t pitching all that well either.. You could also consider maybe they go after both hellickson and Garcia… that would dramatically improve their current rotation and most likely wouldn’t require all that much to make it happen.

Those are all pretty solid points.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of why a 3rd team would come in to try to get Garcia. If you’re another team looking for a SP and the Braves are and asking you to beat the Twins offer, you could easily say no thanks and call Philly or SD. Its a weak rental pitching market, but there are a decent amount of backend guys available.

Garcia is pretty much a lateral move to Meija, who’s pitched decently of late. That being said, he is still an upgrade to the Gibson, Santiago and Colon’s they’ve trotted out on the backend.

He’s not a lateral move. Most of his numbers suggest he will give your team a better chance to win over Meija. Meija still stays in the rotation though. and by no means am i saying Garcia is a huge upgrade to Meija… but he is an update. Immediate #3 starter, possible #2 if the rookie starts to show signs of struggling.

I agree he’d be the third best starter on the Twins, but he has a 4.50 ERA for the last year and a half and that’s in the NL.

He could come over to the AL and be better than Kyle Gibson, but I’d be surprised if it’s a huge upgrade since he’s a 4/5 in the NL.

I read in one comment section of one of the multiple blogs discussing Garcia and the Twins that the hold up was on a medical report concerning a minor leaguer. All speculation and rumor at this point but I could totally see that type of situation come up.

Please God tell me the Astros aren’t actually interested in Garcia… that trade would make ZERO sense. IF the Astros are going to go get a SP, it needs to be a clear upgrade over one of Peacock, Fiers, or Morton (Which Garcia most definitely is not). Personally, I think the Astros are fine in the rotation if McHugh comes back healthy. They need to go get someone like Britton (and maybe another reliever). Having said that, if the A’s are open to dealing Sonny Gray without the Astros giving up Kyle Tucker, they should do it. Maybe Fisher, Martes and another smaller prospect?

I don’t think they should sell on their young hitting to get Gray. That’s something you can’t get enough of. Should sell young pitching either. Houstons in a rare position where they can be good for a very long time and have players in the minors to fill gaps as the become available.

I’m sorta with you, they don’t need to make a move. They can absolute get Garcia though. He’ll fit well enough, although you’re right, he’s not really an upgrade. But it’s not like you would be giving up much for him and the returns should be solid. But if I had to guess, the astros won’t ultimately go get him

I see no advantage to having this southpaw in the starting rotation. Maybe they are trying to view him as a replacement for SIPP ? Definitely not worth giving up young talent when he is at best, what you essentially already have on the roster in the 4/5 hole.

Let’s look into the riches the Astros already have ” IF HEALTHY ”
    -DALLAS
    -LANCE
    -MCCUE
    -MORTON
    -FIRES
    -MUSKGROVE
    -PEACOCK
    -DAVINSKI could start as well

I really do not understand why we are talking about selling the farm when at least two of these guys could be part of the returns in a trade and probably be #3 type starters for 75% of the league. Sure a rebuilding team wants all they can get but I would say that Jeffrey L isn’t going to sacrifice the farm.

These writers are something else if the stros make any moves it will be for a couple of relief pitchers or if a package for Gray is reasonable after all the stros pounded him when they last met. If the starting pitcher being rumored is not De Grom or a higher ranked pitcher than him forget and disregard these pointless rumors. Like the stros are interested in an aging expensive Verlander these rumors can only come from Dreamland. The Astros are one of the first to place infinite value in Farm system players that eventually become ML stars the rest of the league is catching on I see (actually the Cards have been doing it for years now) Sonny Gray and Verlander defy everything Luhnow has stated being he will only make a trade where there is a definite improvement to the rotation at best these two can be only marginal at worst below inbetween exactly the same as the stros have only more expensive either by money owed or by prospects given.

Here is the level of the Astros interest they make a call asking whom is available and the asking price perhaps even state on their interest in a particular player. But that is the level of interest as what it truly was is a cordial call.. By the time it makes this site as a rumor it is shown the Astros have interest in. see the difference between the two. One is cordial out of respect the second is general and only advances if the stros offer something and too date they have no offer on the plate for either Gray or Verlander let alone Garcia. But the following would catch my interest more on the level of Believable. De Grom, Britton,Brach,Hand, Wilson along with players like a Stroman (If he comes available) other than that do not expect the stros to go all in.

Being an Astros fan – I agree. Let’s keep what we have and rule the west for the next 7 years. Use the farm and free agency to bolster the roster. The payroll is already on pace with the current players give or take a few to skyrocket as it is without adding 20 plus for verlander and SONNY will demand a big raise as well if he is acquired and has success. The almighty dollar unfortunately will bite you in the arse eventually. STAND FAST !

I wouldn’t mind Garcia for the Twins, but I wouldn’t give up much of anything to get him. At this point he would give the team 10-12 starts at an average 4th or 5th starter level (assuming he’s healthy the rest of the year). I think I’d rather give Gonsalves and/or Romero a shot long before giving up a real prospect for Garcia.

Considering how Jaime Gracia pitched in his last 2 started. Any team who will try to trade for him will have to give up a very good prospect in the 2-8 range if the Braves pay for most or entire salary. If the Braves decide not then the prospect or prospects in the 20-25 range. His hitting for an NL team that could be a real plus. Also his remaining salary 5 million for baseball organization that is not a lot of money even if you have a spending limit.

True, but I think that’s too much to give up for a rental who’s a 4/5 starter. Same with Thorpe, which is why I didn’t mention either. I know a guy with Twins connections who said that the team definitely thought Thorpe would be an overpay.

Kirilloff was a top five Twins prospect and top 100 overall before TJ so seemed very doubtful it would be him.

And the post has been updated to say it was Burdi. I like Burdi but the guy is injury after injury so I would have been fine with that. Burdi is probably in the top 15-20 range, which to me has always sounded like the max price I’d want them to pay on a 4/5 SP rental.

I understand where you are coming from, but the trade before last night’s game was for a 15-20 organizational prospect and Gray will cost you 2-3 top 10’s +. If the Twins need a pitcher to get them over the top they need to go get Gray before the Brewer’s do. If the Braves didn’t want Nick B., find someone else that will. Jamie Garcia isn’t the only decent back end starter out there.

Right. That I get and the price is going to be ridiculous just because of a bidding war too.

I probably wouldn’t want to pay a big price unless they can get someone better than Gray. Would just always depend on the return for any guy. Twins need a guy with a minimum of two years control at some point, whether it’s the deadline or offseason.
