Tigers Sign Ryan Carpenter

By Jeff Todd | November 20, 2017 at 7:14pm CDT

The Tigers have signed lefty Ryan Carpenter to a MLB deal, per a club announcement. He’ll join the 40-man roster along with a long list of players whose contracts were selected to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Detroit has selected the contracts of the following players:

  • catcher Grayson Greiner
  • outfielder Mike Gerber
  • infielder Sergio Alcantara
  • right-handed pitchers Gerson Moreno, Spencer Turnbull, Eduardo Jimenez
  • left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto

Carpenter is a 27-year-old hurler who became a minor-league free agent after the 2017 campaign. He could be an option in the rotation or the pen. Last year, Carpenter worked to a 4.15 ERA in 156 frames for Triple-A Albuquerque, recording 9.3 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 along the way.

He was spot on. You either didn’t get it or your slow yourself.

Holy smokes, the hot stove is heating up. What will teams bounceback with now that Ryan Carpenter is gone?

Looks they are going to give Carpenter a crack at the fifth starter role, to battle with Buck Farmer. Very interesting indeed to see how he can do in the MLB.

Those two names should be fighting for an invite to camp, not for the 5th starter job.

Should be, as it isn’t ideal to have them as 5th starter options. But they are rebuilding and Carpenter (or Farmer) should be a cheap source of good innings. Plus it looks like anyone who has little team control left are going to be traded (Kinsler, Castellanos, Iglesias)

Um what did he do to deserve a MLB deal?

I’m guessing he had many teams vying for his service.

Suggests a solid pitcher to buy low upon. 4/5 starter quality..
