AL Notes: Yankees, Bumgarner, Rays, Eovaldi, Tigers

By Connor Byrne | July 7, 2018 at 10:39pm CDT

It’s well known that the Yankees are looking to bolster their rotation, though the cost to acquire a starter is “out of control right now,” a source close to the team informed Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Nevertheless, Feinsand goes on to list a few starters the Yankees could pursue, including Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. As you’d expect, though, Bumgarner’s not going anywhere. A Giants executive told Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic that any trade speculation centering on Bumgarner is “California dreaming.”

More on New York and a pair of other AL teams:

  • With the Rays out of contention, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times runs down a bevy of potential trade pieces for the club. The list includes right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who’s expected to draw 10 interested teams to Citi Field to scout his start against the Mets on Sunday, Topkin reports. Eovaldi previously had several clubs on hand this past Monday when he turned in a quality start in Miami. After missing all of 2017 on account of August 2016 Tommy John surgery, the hard-throwing 28-year-old has encouraged this season with a 3.92 ERA, 7.62 K/9 against 1.31 BB/9 and a 49.6 percent groundball rate through 41 1/3 innings. Eovaldi’s also on a cheap salary ($2MM), which adds to his appeal, though he’s not under control past this season.
  • Back to the Yankees, who saw catcher Gary Sanchez hit the disabled list June 25 with a right groin strain. Now, Sanchez has progressed enough that he feels he’ll be able to return before the All-Star break. That’s not going to happen, however, as manager Aaron Boone told George A. King III of the New York Post and other reporters Saturday. The Yankees are taking a cautious approach with Sanchez and will continue to rely on reserve catchers Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka for the next week-plus.
  • The strained right shoulder that sent Tigers closer Shane Greene to the DL this past Monday isn’t a serious injury, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. Greene has inflammation and bursitis – no structural damage – and could return next weekend, Beck relays. The news regarding teammate Leonys Martin, who went on the DL when Greene did, isn’t as promising. The center fielder’s strained left hamstring will keep him out through the break. But should Martin return before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, he figures to draw trade interest. The same goes for Greene.

This is a line you are not old enough for. Don’t mean it with any disrespect or negativity, ijs that’s why you most likely don’t get it. It’s a song by Mamas and Papas probably came out late 60’s early 70’s.

While I get the PR speak regarding Bumgarner, the Giants really should consider moving him.

They badly need an infusion of talent, or the mediocre seasons will continue. Payroll is sky high and it’s paying for very little, and there’s not a lot of bright spots in the farm either.

Almost every Yankee fan would agree he’s one of the rare few, worth giving up the farm on. Bumgarner is young(ish), turns 29 next month, with insanely cheap $12 million 2019 club option.

But apparently, SFG is not selling. Too bad.. Bumgarner is a bonafide Ace.

If they can’t get Bumgarner or Degrom they should just go get Britton or Hand to further boost the bullpen or Moose for 1B. None of the other potential available starters are worth it.

Good thought although if the starters, out side of Sevy, only go 2-3 innings and get torched, a strong bullpen just stops the bleeding that has already occurred.
The only things that might help is a quick hook by Boone, and then game after game, you’d have to have 3-4 relievers ready for each game.
Not a good long term plan though.

A pretty good chunk of change comes off the books at the end of the season, and the only player currently on the roster they may give a big contract extension to is Bumgarner. They will be players in the market this off season but for now, they are all in to show respect to the guys who have been on the team and brought those championships in the early part of the decade. Say what you want but Giants management shows dedication to those who show dedication to them.
That all being said, I was against the Samardzija signing before it happened and that contract will be eating up space for another 2 years after thia one. As well as the Longoria trade, as good of a guy as he is, they gave up I guy I believe will be a consistent.300 hitter and a possible future starting pitcher in that trade and took on big money.

Where do they need that infusion? They’ll have ~100 million to spend after reset of tax, pence(18.5), cutch(15ish), and a few others dropping off. The Brandon’s are studs, people like to has about Belt, but he is fantastic, maybe 5 teams in baseball don’t snap him up on that contract look at his non-concussed stats plus his defense-elite. This draft was actually really solid with kids that should make quick impacts. Heliot Ramos is 18, and while not quite Soto at the plate, will be a contributor by age 20. If not for Bumgarner having a freak last game of ST injury, they’re likely 3-4 games better in the standings. It’s just ridiculous to act as if they are a mediocre team that’s threadbare. They’ve been unlucky and have a decent mix of high upside and high floor guys coming up. Hindsight is 20/20 on Longo, but to get Bumgarner for this year and next for under 20M would take EVERY top Yankees prospect and cash. The Giants are likely the least understood team in the nation. They are covered terribly by the national media because nobody actually stays up for their games, and just writes stories based on each others stories. This is obviously coming from a Giants fan, but they barely got any run nationally when winning WS, so it’s not like it’s gotten better as they’ve had bad injury luck and turned in poor seasons. SF with the new taxes will probably get multiple OF and probably a starter and reliever. It’s unlikely they win it all this year, but most teams won’t. However, they’re far from being hosed for the next decade w/o trading Bumgarner.

It’s funny, the giants every year have a supposedly bad farm system but every year guys come up from it and be major league contributors like Rodriguez, Suarez, moronta, Slater, etc. all from the supposedly horrendous minor league system and all major contributors.

I agree with you. The Giants have brought up so great talent this year. Rodriguez made the Cardinal team look like what they are…Mediocre players. The Cardinals president of baseball operations never played baseball, and can’t recognize MLB talent. The Giants are lucky to have a man in that same position who does know MLB talent when he sees it!!!

What team are you watching? Is it the .500 club that got swept by the Rockes and only managed a split vs another team barely over .500 (Cardinals)?
Don’t get me going on how they fare against actual contenders..they have zero chance of a wild card and made up no ground on the D-backs when they went on a skid. The Giants are not only out of it for 2018, their “prospects” as you mentioned next season rest on a 19 year old? Look at history, see how many 19 year old players make a big impact on a club and sustain it. They need help, and plenty of it, and they don’t have the farm chips to make that happen, that means trades

However, in the process, you cannot alienate your 40,000 fan base who sold out the park year after year after, until their flop last year. Even now, they seat 35,000-39,000 game after game even vs lack luster opponents.

and the Yankees breaking out “every chip” they have plus $ to get him? Do you follow MLB? The Yankees have the #1 farm system in the majors, they have the trading power to get any player in the Bigs and not have to offer haf their chips to do it, perhaps you didn’t notice what we parted for the most powerful bat in the league MVP, Stanton? We gave up Castro and 2 minor leaguers. Not to mention MadBum lost his last 3 starts including getting lit up by Miami, the worst team in the league, and the Cards lit him up tonight (only the offense bailed him out). He’s a great pitcher when he’s right, but for the last 4 starts, he isn’t.

Raytown17, the one reason they did was to show loyalty to the guys who have been there, they wanted to show they were trying to put together a roster different from last year. That being said, as much as I have always liked both Cutch and Longoria, I really wish the Giants had stayed pat and not made those trades. The Longoria trade cost them Arroyo who I believe will be a consistent .300 hitter in the majors, obviously he is way cheaper and younger then Longoria and plays solid defense. It also coat them a young pitcher who has good enough stuff to be a starter one day in the majors. The Cutch trade cost Crick who had finally figured it out after being a top prospect who kind of fell from glory for a few years. It also cost them an OF prospect who also has a chance to be a solid contributor in the majors one day. I think they should have started Arroyo at 3rd and Slater should have been up from day 1 starting in the OF. It would have saved a lot of money this year against the cap, those kids would contribute with really only Longoria’s power missing.

I feel like the Giants should’ve done a trade with the Yankees: Bumgarner for Frazier, Andujar and a Justus Sheffield so that way SF gets depth at OF, 3rd, and walk away with a SP killing it in triple A.

Here is the issue the Yankees have. They want rotation help, but they don’t want to give up any of their top pitching prospects. That is an issue. Not everybody wants Clint Frazier because not everybody needs an outfielder. The Blue Jays are going to want a high end pitching prospect for Happ. The Mets are going to want Sheffield if they are going to even consider trading Syndegaard or DeGrom to the Yankees. The Yankees have done a good job building up their farm system. Now, they are going to have to use some of that capital to get the rotation help they want

That is NOT the Yankees problem. They are more than willing to move their top prospects, but not for a workhorse veteran. Happ and Hamels are NOT worth high end pitching prospects.

The Yankees problem is that there really aren’t any teams willing to part with their elite starters, even for the best prospects.

And every GM knows the Yankees will have a really tough time when they try and use Sabathia as their #2 starter going into the playoffs. They have very little leverage at this point and absolutely need a starter. Teams know this and will raise the cost for them.

Have you seen how CC is pitching this year?

That has less than nothing to do with it. They’re setting their prices so high because they know how hard it is to find elite pitching, and want to keep their aces for their rebuild.

The Mets want to keep DeGrom because he’s so good, young, and controllable— the same reasons teams like the Yankees want him. The question for the Mets is, can they contend within the 2.5yrs they have DeGrom for, or be able to secure him to a longer term contract?

If I’m the Mets I trade DeGrom. He’ll never have more value than RIGHT NOW, and he can get back enough parts to put them back into contention within a couple of years.

True the greatcerealfamine but we all know that CC can be prone to a quick meltdown where a dink and a dunk is followed by a 3 run homer on 1 bad pitch.
The question is do you really trust him slotted in a #2 for a possible playoff run?
Based on his pitching to date, bring it on, but that little doubt in the back of your mind says if somebody is available that relies on less guile, and a little more horsepower, he’s a better #2.

Sabathia is fine but it’s morr of a question of depth right now. Yankees have been getting terrible innings out of Sonny Gray and a lot of their rotation is injured.

This has nothing to do with Sabathia. But is he better than other AL Contenders’ #2 starter? Probably not.

I am the exact opposite of a yankee fan, so looking at this from the outside it does look to me like they are unwilling to trade their top prospects, look at last year when Verlander was available and instead they got Gray who knows what the outcome of last years playoffs would have been had the yankees offered a top prospect for Verlander. Thankfully neither they or the dodgers won the series last year.

I think you are viewing those trades with the benefit of hindsight. Nobody knew Gray would suck this bad. And while they got a good deal on him, they did part with good prospects.

No, the Blue Jays want Clint Frazier for Happ. But after yesterday, they sure as heck are not getting him.

If the Jays are asking for Clint Frazier it means they are trying to trade more than Granderson, or they have completely lost faith in Anthony Alford.

No way for nothing more than a 2 month rental. And, they need Frazier for next year when he replaces Gardner in left!

Not true. Drury and Stanton are capable of handling leftfield. DH can be rotated especially since Sanchez needs to DH more.

And still it’s almost a given that someone will ask during this weeks “chats”,”What kind of package will the Yankees need to give up to get MadBum?”

I assume that the Tigers won’t ask for the moon for Jordan Zimmermann. However, his salary is so high, teams wanting to control their own salary will have to shed salary to acquire him.

He has pitched better of late, but you can rule out any contender who is close to the LTT. I just don’t see anyone who needs a SP so desperately that they’d be willing to take on that future money especially if Zimmermann reverts to his 2016/2017 self.

Back in the old days, Detriot was aggressive paying the max allowed (all but $500K) of salary to move a player and get back some prospects.

Not saying they’ll do that with Zimmermann, but one ‘bad contract’ they did that with, comes to mind is Dave Robertson (Not the RP on the Yankees) This is cool stuff, and wish this aggressive style of GMing comes back — Zimmermann‘s owed $25M annually, the next 2 years, after this one. He’s 4-0, 3.91 ERA, 1.05 WHIP.

Happ and Hamels have been pitching bad lately, I don’t see them helping the Yanks. There aren’t that many options out there, Mad Bum isn’t going anywhere.

Happ’s last 3 starts have been bad, but the last one was REALLY bad. Any interested team is gonna need a medical exam complete with MRIs to make sure he’s not on the brink of a major breakdown.

We already tried Eovaldi and he was a nightmare, ERA pushing 5 and no heart, he always folded when games were close…it was only the Yanks offense that don’t make his W/L record look pathetic,, as for MadBum, it’s clear the Giants won’t make a move, which is foolish since they need help badly. The highest payroll in the majors by plenty, $60 million over the 10th spot (Yankees), and MaBum has looked awful his last 4 starts including getting whipped by the worst team in baseball (Marlins). The Yanks only need a low#3 high #3 starter to walk across the AL East. They’re keeping pace with Boston with 3 starters, and Sanchez/Andujar, 2 of their “Big 4” offensive weapons on the DL

As just stated to another dreamer, if Mad Bum is doing so poorly, why do you, Yankees and east coast writers keep promoting the idea???

Spoken like an east coast person who is rooting for a team that wants the Giants to trade Mad Bum. Post your comment somewhere so you can reflect come October.
