Padres Designate Matt Szczur

By Connor Byrne | July 1, 2018 at 12:07pm CDT

The Padres have designated outfielder Matt Szczur for assignment, per a team announcement. Additionally, San Diego reinstated infielder Allen Cordoba from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Single-A, and recalled infielder Carlos Asuaje from Triple-A.

The 28-year-old Szczur’s in his second season with the Padres, who acquired him in a trade with the Cubs in 2017. Szczur has struggled over 84 plate appearances this year in San Diego, where he has hit .187/.265/.267. Overall, the right-handed hitter’s a .231/.312/.355 in 667 major league PAs.

The Padres plucked Cordoba from the Cardinals in the December 2016 Rule 5 draft. Cordoba managed to hang with the Padres despite slashing just .208/.282/.297 in 227 PAs last season, his age-22 campaign. He has totaled just 49 PAs this year – all at the Single-A level – on account of a concussion.

Could see Sczcur end back up with the Cubs. Saw Almora limping during yesterday’s game and began thinking about the outfield depth and it is rather thin right now. Having Sczcur back at insurance for all 3 outfield spots could help down the stretch.

The Cubs have Lane Adams in their system, he’s a much better option than Szczur.

almora just had a cramp but if an outfielder went down, it would be Zagunis called up and Happ/Heyward sharing time in CF.

I would like to see Caratini first. There are enough things they can do to fill up an outfield slot.

Asuaje being called up for what’s? Show case for a trade. Spangenberg is better if they would let him play everyday. Better hitter….more speed than Asuaje

No Asuaje is better than spang
Both all three need to go
      Pirela spang and Asuaje

So some trades need to happen

Ever since Asuaje was demoted to Triple-A hes been hitting .338/.408/.492 in 35 games. Spangenberg accumulated a .181 batting average is the month of April and May and he might have more potential, but Asuaje is actually showing a sign of big improvement, so he deserved the promotion. I don’t see why they would leave him in Triple-A with those numbers

Anyone hitting over .320 in Triple-A deserves a promotion, no one is saying Asuaje will be hitting over .300 in the majors. Spangenberg is batting .240 the whole season and Priela has a .242 ba in the last 99 at bats. Unless you have a logical reason to leave someone who’s on a hot streak in the minors and not promote them, then you’re out of your mind.

Nick Buss led the PCL hitting .348 for El Paso last year. About 2 weeks ago, he was released by Rochester after hitting .239 with no power in the IL. The PCL hitting #’s are a joke and shouldn’t be considered as any indication of how a batter will hit in real conditions.

If your performance in the minors doesn’t matter that the which other way do you expect teams to determine who gets promoted?

Anyone bullish on Cordoba, at least in terms of what he may do after another year or so in the minors?

I realize the NL figured him out pretty quickly, but I liked the batting eye and the approach he brought to the plate during his season-opening streak last year.

I think Cordoba was brought up to the majors way too soon. He was hitting really well with the Cardinals in rookie ball from 2015-2016 with a batting average of.342/.401/.421 in 2015 and .362/.427/.495 in 2016. Those numbers deserve a promotion, but not that big of a promotion. At this point I see him as an average outfielder and below average SS (fielding wise) and an average/below average hitter. He might end up being another bench player if they rush him to the majors again. I don’t understand why they would do that again, but I think they learned from their mistakes. They should just let him play a season in Single A and maybe a season and a half in both double A and triple A before hes promoted to the majors

Cordoba was a Rule 5 guy. The Padres has to have in on the major league roster or else would lose him.

He showed plenty of promise as an overmatched kid in a league that was way over his head. This year was supposed to be a year of developmental growth for him but an auto collision late in the offseason has had him on the shelf with extreme concussion symptoms most of this year. He’s back on the field but not hitting well, although I hear he’s moving well in the field at SS & OF.

I think Szczur will clear waivers and accept a AAA assignment. Really don’t see another team taking a flyer on him unless somebody loses like 2 OFs over the next few days.
