Mets Hire Jim Riggleman As Bench Coach

By Jeff Todd | November 26, 2018 at 6:27pm CDT

The Mets announced that they have hired Jim Riggleman to serve as their next bench coach, with Jon Heyman tweeting the news just before the team did. He’ll be the top member of manager Mickey Callaway’s staff.

In 2018, Callaway’s first at the helm of the dugout, the club utilized Gary DiSarcina as the bench coach. But DiSarcina was reassigned to serve as third base coach, with new GM Brodie Van Wagenen making clear the organization preferred to bring on a new bench coach that had prior experience running games in the National League.

Rigglemen certainly fits the mold of what the Mets said they were seeking. The 66-year-old has served as the manager of five clubs, four of them in the National League. Through 13 total seasons as a big league skipper, including gigs with the Padres, Cubs, Mariners, Nationals, and Reds, Riggleman carries a 726-904 record.

Most recently, Riggleman functioned in an interim capacity with the Reds. He managed the Cincinnati ballclub for most of the 2018 campaign, taking over for Bryan Price after opening the year as their bench coach. Riggleman was considered as a candidate for the full-time position but was bypassed in favor of David Bell.

Expected move, almost too predictable. Riggleman is a good baseball guy tho to have around the dugout

Should help Calloway, who sometimes look befuddled by NL game…..and he’s a good foil for the “jolly gum drops” Calloway, since he’s a bit on the terse and hard-butt side….reminds me of when Joe Maddon was screening players away from Mike Soscia in Anaheim….

Finally!!! Something positive. This is a good, smart hire. Callaway needed an experienced NL guy on the bench. Wouldn’t be surprised if Riggleman takes over at some point this season but hope I’m wrong.

Quality move for the Mets. Riggleman is a good man and he’s a good hedge against a potential in-season Callaway firing

This might be Riggleman’s best fit in coaching. Kind of like in the NFL where OC’s & DC’s fail as head coaches.

Sometimes I feel like the Reds are the dumbest organization in the league, then I remember How unbelievably stupid the Mets are. Almost all teams realize that wether they like it or not, analytics have to be implemented throughout the organization. Last year, Rigs decided to have their hottest hitter, Scooter, bunt the fastest player, Billy Hamilton, over to second, costing them the game. Are all Mets fans that clueless?

You are using 1 example of fundamental, situational baseball that did not work out as your rationale to call an entire fan base stupid? Wow. Pot, meet kettle. Analytics are interesting enough but not one instance of winning a thing to date. Otherwise Billy Beane would have more than saying Brad Pitt once played him.

Beane teams have won one playoff series in 20 years.

When a lot of teams in his division tank/rebuild or trade off high-priced veterans during the season, he has his manager run each game like it’s the 7th game of the WS. He picks up veterans for the stretch run. The A’s beat up on the weak sisters like a boxing agent scheduling his fighter against a series of never-was and don’t-care-anymore guys to run up his record. Gets his guy in a match with one of the big boys, and inevitably gets slapped down.

        Rebuild. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

A bunch of nerds think the guy’s a genius.

lmao that’s easily the worst possible take made by some clown who’s butthurt their fave team didnt get a brad pitt movie made about their team.

there is no theo epstein without billy beane, theo stole every single move he had from beane, then added money to it, boom, title. 2004 was the first true moneyball title, like 2 years after it came out. if you dont think papi is one of the most moneyball players of all time, you have rocks in your head. its a philosophy, not a singular team motto.

A’s had the lowest payroll in the league last year, and that got them to the postseason. Can’t ask for anything more. When was the last time the White Sox, Padres and Mariners made the playoffs again? Exactly. Beane IS a genius, you chumps.

name calling shows who really is the butt hurt one my friend. You are entitled to your opinion. However, Theo never won squat on analytics – he won because he spent money in Boston and because he took over after years of futility in Chicago where they amassed talent by coming in last every year and trading away bought and paid for guys for near can’t misses. You can have an opinion but you don’t get to re-write history.

To answer your question Ty, most Met’s fans were clueless. The way some of them are fawning over this guy, you would think that he can bring experience from winning teams. however his career numbers are upside down.

Proverbial Question: When will this team place a premium on creating a winning team culture?

Simple Answer: Need to wait for new ownership. Everything else runs downstream.

Hey Look it lilmikey,.who said he doesn’t hate the Met, but he does. Did you soil you depends AGAIN. Why did your cheep team only vote 47 playoff shares and not the full 66. Stanton must have needed to pay his rent. Stankees cut out people who travel with them and their hitting coach got 1/2 share. Get A Catcher that your team is crying for. or do you really think passball boy is still good. worry about your stankees. Sign Harper to play???or Manny so he can cry when the stankees ask him to move to 3B. 55 IS YOUR iq.

However the root of your vitriol is this name METSFAN4EVER. Did your parents give you this name as a way of maintaining your low self esteem.

The issue in this article is simple: Do fans think that it was a good move or not? So if your cursor keeps working (when hopefully you can bite your lip and stop cursing) read ALL the fans comments and you will see why not fans think its another Mets CHEAP DATE.

The Met’s are in the hunt for Machado and Harper. They WONT close out the deal and sign either one. However for their fans, all that matters is that the team state that they are in the hunt. Real results don’t matter when ownership would rather pocket the fans’ money rather than sensibly invest it.

Do you think that Marlins’ fans have it worse than Met’s fans?

With their limited resources the Marlins are working to build a good core.

With their abundant resources from playing in the largest market, The Met’s owners are working to skim as much revenue from the top that they can so that their lifestyle and Brooklyn Dodgers’ memorabilia collection can grow.

More misspelled words 4ever. Leave marlinsfanbase alone. His team is honest and forthright in its approach and is doing it the right way.

Your team only won 14 more games than the Marlins. Sounds like a lot, however with a Cy Young Award winner on the Mets the team still only won 10 games for him. That’s because the team around him was filled with hot air.

BTW-Your drunk behavior WON’T get you any beer from vendors. You WILL get thrown out.

Why is your team sooooo cheep. only 47 shares, not the full 66. Cutting out the little guy, your hitting coach. I guess that because of all those Ks. Stankees last W/S was 09, I see you bought AJ Burnett @ 5 years $82 mil and he went 34 & 35, and Mark Teixira @ 8 years $180mil, CC took-you-to-the-bath-ea @ 10 $190mil ALL FOR 1 W/S. Now that a smart management move. The Stankees has A-Roid @ $33 mil that year but paid him over $200mil, Johnny Damon the year before @ 5years for $52 mil. DAM the Stankees are SUCKERS. Wow what a smart move paying over $700mil for 1 W/S.. SPEND FOOLS SPEND.LOL so the overspending and the got no money boys talking trash-If it wasn’t for the Mets Both of you would just be rubbing them out- Have a great X-mas and a happy New Year.

I hope that your wishes mean that you are taking a long vacation. It won”t affect your hopeless team for certain. Maybe you should consider a permanent one as you know that your borderline IQ makes even typing on your phone a chore for someone with such fat fingers.

Counting other people’s money seems to be your obsession. Perhaps you can take a guess at how much money Bobby Bo is making this year from the Mets? When was his last game? That was a great contract that Mutt negotiated, huh?

So you take a swipe at the 2009 era Yankees. What were your Met’s doing during that time period? The results are very easy to identify as the METS HAVE NOT HAD A WINNER IN 30+ YEARS.

When you are running around Chitifield in your Mr. Met costume, we will mount a sign on your back “1986”. It will be a reminder to everyone that this is the team’s destiny.

Is it just me or is there something contradictory in that Mets fan’s message? He talks about the Yankees spending a lot of money, but talks about the Marlins being cheap. So let’s look at this. He talks about the Yankees spending hundreds of millions of dollars for a championship, but then calls the Marlins cheap in their history….a history in which the Marlins have spent far less than the Mets since their inaugural season, but have won two championships to the Mets zero since 1993 (and since 1986)….a period in which the Yankees money has produced five championships.

So which is the bad thing here?

Yankees spent all that money for the 2009 championship; or the five since the Marlins inaugural season?

The Marlins being cheap and spending far less than the Mets in their effort to win their two championships since their inaugural season (ahem, which gives them just as many all time championships as the Mets in far far far far less years)?

Or the Mets who spend less than the Yankees while being in NY, but spending far far far far more than the Marlins, while not winning championships during the times that these other two teams have won multiple championships?

          Hmmmm…?

Hmmmm…I guess it’s a Mets fan thing to think that if the NY media didn’t hype it up, it means that the Marlins didn’t get anything. Keep listening to E!SPN and FOX kiddo. Last I checked, they always bash the Marlins while looking for the few moments to hype up the Mets. Last I checked, we have just as many championships, more organizational accomplishments (no hitters, star players), etc. than the Mets….in far less years. And our championship drought is 17 years less than the Mets.

You have more visiting fans then home fans @ your game. Now Miami was Florida – Please if it wasn’t for the stankees over spending your team would be on the welfare line-sad-just sad. Yep, these are the things to look for at a game. I have my priorities wrong. I’ve been too busy watching the Marlins win championships in 1997 and 2003. Clearly you Mets fans have your priorities right. You watch the stuff off the field, and your Wilpons have delivered with no championships since 1986…and even that took one of the epic choke jobs to happen, otherwise it would have been since 1969….like your Jets.

As for the trades, wait and see. Your media always misses information on teams that aren’t in NY and Boston. It’s what FOX and E!SPN and SNY does.

Riggleman’s an excellent hire for the Mets. I say that as a Cubs fan who remembers Riggleman from his time as Cubs manager as well as from the Cubs playing the Reds last season. The Reds played A LOT better once Riggleman took over and he is a very respected baseball man. Cubs folks still really like the guy.
