We checked in on the American League earlier Thursday evening. Here’s even more from the Junior Circuit:
- Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto pulled off his latest blockbuster trade Thursday, though he did it from a hospital bed. It turns out Dipoto was dealing with “severe chest pains” stemming from blood clots in his lungs, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. Fortunately, Dipoto was released from a Las Vegas-area hospital Thursday afternoon and cleared to fly back to Seattle. “It was pretty scary and quite painful stuff,” Dipoto told Johns via text. “I’m thankful to know there’s an issue while we can manage it.” MLBTR joins those around the game in wishing the always entertaining Dipoto a speedy recovery.
- Along with the previously reported Adam Ottavino, the Yankees met with free-agent reliever Andrew Miller’s camp during the Winter Meetings, according to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. In his previous trip to free agency, back in 2014, Miller signed with the Yankees on a four-year, $36MM contract. Miller then proceeded to dominate out of New York’s bullpen until the team traded him to Cleveland in July 2016. While Miller continued to post elite production through 2017, he looked like a mere mortal last season during an injury-shortened campaign. Still, MLBTR expects the 33-year-old to pull in another lofty payday this winter. Perhaps he’ll return to his old stomping grounds in the Bronx to get it.
- The Athletics and free-agent catcher Jonathan Lucroy “appear to be at a salary impasse,” Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. Lucroy spent last season in Oakland after inking a one-year, $6.5MM deal in mid-March, and though the former star drew rave reviews from his teammates, he didn’t acquit himself well statistically. The 32-year-old batted a career-worst .241/.291/.325 (70 wRC+) in 454 plate appearances and, among hitters with at least 450 PAs, recorded the majors’ fifth-lowest ISO (.084). The once-marvelous defender also struggled behind the plate.
- Turning to the Athletics’ pursuit of rotation help, Slusser hears that they’re “bottom feeders” on the pitching market, though she points out that they’re known for exercising patience and finding diamonds in the rough. The team’s not averse to doling out multiyear deals for free-agent pitchers, per GM David Forst. On the trade front, Slusser casts doubt on a potential Sonny Gray-Athletics reunion, reporting that the Yankees’ asking price for him is currently too lofty for the A’s liking.
- Reliever Joe Kelly agreed to a three-year, $25MM deal with the Dodgers on Thursday, but his previous employer in Boston didn’t make a particularly competitive offer to retain him, Rob Bradford of WEEI suggests. Not only did the Red Sox only propose a two-year contract, but the average annual value likely didn’t match what the Dodgers will give Kelly, according to Bradford. That jibes with a previous report suggesting the Red Sox are waiting for relievers’ prices to drop before committing to anyone.

Mad bum to Dodgers for Puig
radioball123
Won’t happen….sorry
puigpower
Silly.
kaskro
😉 but who loses? 2 years of puig at 6 or 8 mil for 1 year of mad bum at 12 mil
bigkempin
Puig is only under control for next season and his arb salary will likely be $10M+
vtadave
One year of Puig at an estimated $11.5 million. Giants would only deal Bumgarner for prospects.
kaskro
You’re right bigkempin. That would be a lopsided deal, maybe international bonus money 🙂 or to free up some money to sign Harper 🙂 🙂
kaskro
If these figures are checking out.. Thanks boys with this bball chat. Love it. Than 11.5 mil 1 year for Puig and 12 mil 1 year for Bum. Than we’re going to need to add either all your international bonus money here or we need Verdugo
albearrrr
Whoever owns Puig and his baggage loses
franksouze
Not going to happen- Giants/Boche wont suffer mental fools – Puig is too labor intensive. disruptive with major social adjustment issues
kaskro
Puig is the only logical player to have a home run hit off his head again.. I think this would be the right direction for the Giants. RIP Jose Cancseco. I am a Giants fan. But if we have Puig in LF then at least Harper wont be there.
callingoutdummies247
We?
kaskro
yeah i play for the giants. Im Buster Posey. Im still kinda hurt from that surgery but still checking out these comment boards for all the haters.
Dodgethis
Should change your name, as you’re obviously the dummy here.
Basebal101
Dodger’s have 5 starters better then that “bum” already they would never make that trade.
Dodgethis
Dodgers don’t have a single pitcher anywhere near bumgarner. Kershaw is a joke when it counts, everyone else is mediocre at best.
zachgwest
Buehler?
philsandsox2009
But none with that post season resume
Padres r knocking on the door
Dodgers are always trying to throw Puig into the deal.
Juggy
Yankees will grab two premier set up guys by Monday
Perksy
Which two you hoping for?
dust44
I want DRob back personally. Wouldn’t even mind signing Ottavio and DRob then circling back to Miller. They have a few younger relievers they could package for a bench bat or a couple lottery ticket prospects. Haven’t ever been completely sold on Kahnle.
philsandsox2009
DRob is a beast! Hoping the Sox sign him
xabial
Go for Miller Yanks!!
Ottavino has never had a good year, before this year (!)
Me thinks both Relievers’ 2018 was an anomaly^^^
southbeachbully
That’s not true. He was excellent in 2013 and 2016 and pretty solid in 2014 too. That being said, I’d rather go with some combo of Robo, Miller or Britton especially since they’re familiar with the AL and the Yanks.
WestCoastSoxFan
Hard to believe how quickly Lucroy lost it. He was one of the best even a couple years ago when he blocked a trade from MIL to CLE. The Brewers would have gotten some good prospects out of that deal, too.
joepanikatthedisco
Could’ve gotten revenge for giving Michael Brantley away
jbigz12
Lucroy got them Brinson. Brinson got them Yelich. Sometimes it’s not so bad.
WestCoastSoxFan
Realistically(and most likely) the Yankees will only get one of those guys.
Samuel
Miller and Britton are bad contracts in waiting.
Relief pitchers are the most volatile segment of MLB players. As John Hart always said – “Closers fall out of trees”.
Not saying those guys might not have another good year in them. Just saying that 3-4 years @ a $12m-plus AAV is asking for it.
Because relief pitching is so unpredictable year-to-year, the current practice of finding hot arms during the season from teams rebuilding or falling out of contention is the way to go.
Robertson is the most consistent and and the one that stays healthiest. If his price becomes reasonable, he’s a nice 7th inning guy that can pitch the 8th and 9th for a short period of time.
dust44
Agree. I’m hoping DRob comes back
philsandsox2009
He is representing himself so his price will be very reasonable as he doesn’t lose agent commissions. Surprised he hasn’t been signed yet
XabiaI
Severino: 209.1 total innings (previous career high: 161.2 in 2015)
Montgomery: 163.1 total innings (previous career high: 139.1 in 2016)

Also, good to have insurance fort injuries that inevitably hit.
This still doesn’t change the fact this is an overpay (without Torres) trading Clint Frazier for 2 years of Cole (after Cole had down 2017)
djpiglatin
Oh the year when the league became more reliever oriented than starters?
southbeachbully
I know. Kind of sad. I don’t think we’ll ever see a 300 game winner again.
southbeachbully
I wonder what the trade value would be for Betances and his last arbitration year. He would be a nice addition compared to some of the other options. Of course, it’s only a 1 year deal but it’s less risky.
Michael Chaney
Did Lucroy’s defense draw rave reviews?
CowboysoldierFTW
It did not draw rave reviews.
WestCoastSoxFan
Yes. From Mrs. Lucroy.
bobtillman
…nah , it was his offense……
Dodgethis
Almost as annoying as the attention starved child posts of late…
pasha2k
I’m not surprised the Redsox low balled Kelly, but as much as I like him he was pretty bad all yr till the end. I hope he does well, I’ll miss Joe.
Yanks2
Why are you not surprised? Joe Kelly was a good pitcher
franksouze
yeah I agree, Kelly contributed a succesful season, was a great teamate & informal leader –
SAWX low balled him because they are seriously over budget with zero wiggle room.

philsandsox2009
He was good early on then started using his change up as his out pitch. Once he went back to the gas it made his other pitches damn near unhittable. About time someone taught him how to pitch. If he continues that way of pitching, watch out. He will finally realizes his potential for a full season. Nice pickup for LA

wholenewworld
Also, I think Lucroy probably priced himself out of a decent extension from the Brewers back in ’15.
Lucroy was likely looking to get just shy of Russell Martin or Brian McCann money. Like 5-$70. Brewers offered, but probably more like 4-$45. And Lucroy spit on it.
If the A’s really offered him 1-$5, he should jump at it.
coldbeer
Why such a high asking price on Sonny? I highly doubt they will get back what they gave up to get him. Not even close.
WestCoastSoxFan
Not close is right. When they acquired him he had 2+ years of control and was a young ace in the making. Now he’s basically damaged goods. I can’t blame Cashman for asking a lot of him, but I can’t imagine anyone will pay that price.
brandons-3
Yeah, it’s odd but understandable. His home/road splits are pretty cut and dry. Even though his road numbers aren’t frontline or ace level, they’re good to bet on for a year. Add that there’s actually a market for him, and the Yankees are in as good a spot as they could be in considering how public they’ve been about moving on. He won’t net back a big haul, but some depth, change of scenery, or untapped talent or tool sort of guy can be had.
dust44
Just like any negotiating process u ask for way more then u should get or actually know it’s worth. Then u work ur way to a comfortable price. What if Oakland offered back the same 3 guys they sent there? Mateo, Kapreillian, and Fowler. Doubt the Yanks take that. The only one who really may still have a positive future is Mateo and we won’t know till he actually plays in the bigs
billysbballz
I’ll take it. Kapreillean too me still has a future and I loved his moxie
Gleyborday
Agree and it would be a year free hewsnt that bad I kinda feel like they night get better from red Jeter daens and she’d long maybe??
rocky7
Disagree….he’s not damaged goods….in a market where Corbin and Eovaldi get what they got coming off of only good walk years….and in the case of Eovaldi 22 innings of great pitching…..Gray at his age and with his road splits will convince somebody out there that he just couldn’t pitch in Yankee Stadium and the beast that’s the AL East.
Damaged goods ….don’t think so….his arm is fine and even if he’s one year from free agency, somebody will take a chance that he pitches better and then flip him at the trade deadline.
Another expert Sox fan on the wrong coast heard from.
KD17
Rocky7 – I agree there is nothing wrong with Sonny except being in NY. It happens all the time. Eventually, after being a Yankee, I’d like to see him somewhere like SD. I think it would allow him a chance to re=launch his career, gain back some confidence and fine=tune some of his pitches that aren’t working in NY.
InternetBaseballGuy
I don’t care what any of these baseball nerds say, I like you, Jerry! A speedy recovery and many more deals ahead. Long live Dipoto!
myaccount
Get well, Jerry!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Really! Blood clots in the lungs & still working. Get well.
ColossusOfClout
Bring back N O R U N S D M C!!!
xabial
If you don’t like trades, you don’t like baseball, period.
Get better soon, Jerry!
Slevin
Who’s who?
Vizionaire
i never liked dipoto even when he was the angels g.m. but hope he recovers quickly.
jg_916
Newsflash to Ms Slusher: the Triple A’s are the very definition of “bottom feeders,” along with Tampa. The starters they signed from the pitching junk pile last season, like Cahill and Jackson, weren’t “diamonds in the rough.” Despite many years of professional mediocrity (at best), the pressure and stress endured never hardened them into diamonds. To this day, they remain mere lumps of coal.
arc89
That AAA had a better record than 3/4 of the teams in baseball last year. So i guess those team that won under 95 games are AA teams?
Ski to Coors
Thankfully Dipoto does trades by text, otherwise we never would’ve had a 3 way today.
driftcat28 2
Fingers crossed that Cashman can pull off Robertson and Miller
billysbballz
I rather Andrew Miller and Adam Ottavino at this point on 2 year deals.
Then our pitchers are set.
If we are not in on Machado and Harper well I hope we go after Daniel Murphy and a defensive minded ss.
GrandpaBaseball
Jerry Dipoto will wreck a minor league system fast as witnessed by both Angels fans and continued with Seattle Mariners fans. Now he is in process of gutting a big league team. If Jedi pulls this off and makes a run for the top in 4 years he merits being a GM in my book. Sadly.other wise he earns his station of being a loser and will up and quit anyway..
bigdaddyhacks
Other then being totally wrong, do you care to cite examples of this?
