NL Rumors: Realmuto, Mets, Marlins, Pads, Myers, Bucs, D-backs, Rendon

By Connor Byrne | December 13, 2018 at 9:03pm CDT

The Mets’ ongoing pursuit of Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto has dominated headlines this week, and Tim Healey of Newsday sheds more light on the teams’ talks. While the Marlins are interested in all three of Amed Rosario, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto and reportedly want more than one of those players for Realmuto, it doesn’t seem that’s going to happen, per Healey. Rather, only one member of that trio – likely Nimmo or Conforto – would headline Miami’s return, according to Healey, who adds that the Marlins also like Mets infield prospects Andres Gimenez, Ronny Mauricio and Mark Vientos. All three of those players rank among the Mets’ top prospects, with MLB.com placing Gimenez first, Mauricio sixth and Vientos eighth.

  • Whether via trade or free agency, the Padres will “absolutely” acquire a third baseman this offseason, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com relays. Picking up hot corner help is the club’s No. 1 priority, Cassavell offers, as corner infielder/outfielder Wil Myers isn’t an ideal fit there, main 2018 starter Christian Villanueva immigrated to Japan and the Padres released Cory Spangenberg. But if Myers isn’t going to play third, it further calls into question what the Padres will do with him this offseason. San Diego is committed to Eric Hosmer at first base and has a host of of other outfielders, after all, and Myers has come up in recent trade speculation. However, despite Myers’ so-so production from 2017-18 and the remaining $64MM on his contract, it seems the Padres remain bullish on him. Indeed, they’re not going to trade Myers for anything but “the right offer,” Cassavell notes. His presence may make one or more of his fellow Padres outfielders expendable, though Cassavell suggests it’s no sure thing they’ll trade anyone from the group.
  • Having lost Jordy Mercer in free agency, the Pirates have spoken to the Diamondbacks about shortstop Nick Ahmed this week, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The defensively adept Ahmed, 28, is coming off a career-best offensive season, albeit one in which he still hit just .234/.290/.411 (84 wRC+) in 564 plate appearances. He’s under control for two more years and will make a projected $3.1MM in 2019. That would be an affordable sum for Pittsburgh, but Berry explains that the team’s content to roll with in-house shortops Erik Gonzalez and Kevin Newman if it doesn’t land Ahmed or another veteran option.
  • It’s well-documented that the Nationals could lose one of their elite players, outfielder Bryce Harper, to free agency this year. And the team may be in a similar position 12 months from now if third baseman Anthony Rendon, who’s entering a contract year, doesn’t sign an extension. However, general manager Mike Rizzo is optimistic the Nationals will prevent Rendon from leaving, Jamal Collier of MLB.com writes. “I think Anthony wants to be here, I think he wants to be here long term,” Rizzo said. “And we want him here. Hopefully there’s a deal that transpires out of goodwill between the two sides.” According to agent Scott Boras (also Harper’s representative), Washington’s “very aware” of what it has in Rendon, who has “been in the top 10 players in the game in the last three or four years.” Boras is always one to talk up his clients, but he’s not exaggerating in Rendon’s case, as the 28-year-old ranks seventh among position players in fWAR (17.3) dating back to 2016.

        Three way deal

Seattle gets: Julio Teheran, & Adam Duvall

        San Diego gets: Kyle Seager

        Atlanta gets: Will Myers

Padres Get thier 3B, Seattle gets a starter & an OF, who make a total of 15 million this year, so saving payroll & not having long term obligations to either player, Teheran has a option for 2020 that has value if he pitches like a 4/5th starter.

Braves get a Left Fielder who can hit a little bit, and if he is out of SD he will hit better as that park is death to hitters. He is owed 64 million over 4 years but only 3 million this year. So with Donaldson coming off the books it is not a prohibitive salary moving forward.

I would rather pay 4/64 for Myers than 3/50 for Cutch it Brantley. Myers is 3+ years younger than either Cutch or Brantley and has more chance to not be terrible at the end of the deal. I make the deal because you can always flip him to an AL team in year 3/4 of the deal if needed and not be in a bad spot as he will be 32 at the end of the deal. Plus if you budget the money it’s 16 million a year. He just needs to be a 2+ win player to be a player of value. Not a high bar that has to be set here.

I could live with this deal. We desperately need a 3B, and I wouldn’t miss Myers at all.

[Mr. Byrne: regarding Villanueva’s departure, I believe the correct form of the word is EMIGRATED in this context. Minor pet peeve.]

Bc he’s looking for 10 / 400 , once Macao’s signs he will see there isn’t much shot at 400 and he will take whoever the best offer comes from and if the Nationals are the team he will sign w them … Either way there will be our clauses , no trade clauses ect , this will be far from the last time we hear about Harper and his contract …. He should sign w Philly but leave them enough room to sign Trout in 2 years

Alicides can bridge the gap the first few months until Tatis is ready and Moose can play third until Potts is ready.

BVW has got to give up on this obsession with JTR. It’s not worth it! Spend Fred’s money on Grandal or even Ramos or even Maldonado, but don’t give up on the young core! If the Marlins would trade straight up for one of them, sure, but the desperation is unwarranted.

      Not really……

Realmuto helps the pitching as well as adding a solid RH bat to a team overloaded with LH bats. The catchers you mentioned are not that good, and the first 2 want big bucks….Realmuto is affordable.

If BVW really wants to contend in 2019, I don’t understand the obsession with Rosario. Sure, he has athletic ability and could develop into a star – like he has speed and someday could steal bases. On D he’s all over the place – arms and legs flailing away – unable to balance, plant and set his feet to throw. Yes, he has potential. But until then he has a 0.8 WAR in 200 games over 2 seasons.

Make him a centerpiece of the trade; sign Adeiny Hechavarria or Jose Iglesias that can be had for reasonable salaries and will play a ML SS in 2019.

This is the Mets problem – they’re waiting on young guys that will not mature (if ever) while their starting pitching window slowly closes.

Good luck, Ford. I hope you get to stick around.

Remember Orioles’ Hyun Soo Kim? He hit .182/.229/.182 with zero extra base hits in 44 PA, but had a special clause in his contract, the Orioles granted, which gave him the right to refuse Minor league assignment. A minor controversy assembled, when Kim —predictably— refused the assignment- despite the Orioles attempts to coax him to.

What’s the point of my ramble? Despite Kim being out of the league, he managed to prove ST #’s completely useless — Kim hit .302/.382/.420 with 6 HR, 22 RBI in 386 PA, in 2016.

Sadly, somehow, in 2017, Kim had more than 100 fewer PA than his 2016 season, in 1 more game xD. don’t know what happened to him, to hit .231/.307/.292 1 HR in 2017 —- numbers that took him out of the league, but his one productive 2016 season, which came out of his miserable Spring training, proved ST means NOTHING.

The Gyorko/Jay trade happened after the 2015 season when Preller started tearing things down in San Diego. If not for Jay getting beaned and breaking his wrist, the Padres would have gotten a nice return for him at the deadline as he was having a good year.

Who says no first 3 team blockbuster:

Dodgers send Kemp, Puig, Woods to Reds.
Reds send Homer Bailey to Dodgers and Scooter Gennet to the Yankees.
Yanks send Sonny Gray to Reds and Stanton to the Dodgers after he waives NT.

Yanks now sign Harper for Left, Machado 3rd, Scooter plays 2nd, Torres SS, Andujar super utility and DH.
Stanton in RF where he really belongs for Dodgers.
Cincy just loaded team up and got rid of Bailey contract and received Gray only losing Scooter Gennett.

Your valuing Stanton as if he’s a negative yet they’re going to go out and sign Harper and/or Manny to a contract as long and likely more expensive than Stanton’s?

If Harper or Manny hit 40 hrs then most would be happy with their season. Stanton had an off year and still hit 38. I think the Yanks would want to add one of the two and keep Stanton.

I don’t think the Dodgers ever wanted any part of that contract. And realistically he’s not really a great fit especially for a team trying to cut on the K’s. The Dodgers used the luxury tax excuse, and basically only wanted Stanton on their terms which was extremely discounted. So the Dodgers and the Yankees both say no.

Why do all the scenarios I see for Realmuto to the Mets sound like the Mets getting raped? Syndergaard for Realmuto in a 3 way? Pulleeeze. Mets would need to get way more than just JTR to make that deal. Two of Conforto, Nimmo or Rosario? Pulleeeeze. No way two.

I would be willing to give up one of Nimmo or Rosario, preferably Rosario. Add Dom Smith, Ronny Mauricio and Mark Vientos, and we have a deal for Realmuto. Otherwise, lets move on.

If we are talking Syndergaard with the Padres and Marlins, we need to get more back. Lets say:
Padres get Syndergaard. Give Hedges, Urias, Paddack and Franmil Reyes
Marlins give Realmuto. Get Hedges, Rosario, Mauricio and Vientos
Mets give Syndergaard, Rosario, Mauricio and Vientos.
Mets get Realmuto, Urias, Paddack and Franmil Reyes.

    Fair deals?

You think Syndergaard, an acknowledged ace,, a Cy Young caliber pitcher, is damaged goods? Good luck to that.

Hedges is a good catcher, but you have a MLB top level catching prospect waiting in the wings.
Reyes is OK, but still unproven. And Urias and Paddack are top prospects (27 & 35) but they are still prospects. How many top 35 prospects have turned out to be so-so MLB players or flops.

If the roles were reversed, I would still do this deal.

What do you think about this one?

Mets- JT Realmuto, Kirby Yates, Nick Wittgren, Hudson Potts

          Padres- Noah Syndergard, Adam Conley

Marlins- Francisco Mejia, Logan Allen, David Peterson, Ronny Mauricio, Mark Vientos

I think it’s equal value for each team for the players given up

Reyes makes it way too much. Remove him from the deal. He doesn’t make sense for the Mets anyways – if he is traded assure yourself he is going to the AL.

If the Mets are trying to win now they wouldn’t want Padres prospects. Lucchesi, Margot, Yates and Nix makes more sense going back to NYM with Realmuto with Thor and Martin Prado heading back to San Diego.

I assure you the Mets would prefer Paddack to Joey lucchesi, Nix (you didn’t even have the decency to give them lauer) and Manuel margot even as they try to contend. You’re not getting Thor for Yates + some of your fringe regulars and back end starters.

Mets can keep Mauricio and Vientos, The marlins wouldn’t trade JT without any pitchers coming back. They would take Paddak and the Mets would keep the others. If it was a 3 team deal marlins would rather have the Padres prospects then the Mets

I wonder why the Mets are so focused on obtaining JT? A great hitting catcher is a luxury. Why not go after a defensive catcher and try to improve the offense at other positions that are easier to get and cost less in terms of assets, especially if he might walk to the highest bidder in 2 years?

Boston won 108 games yet their collective of catchers provided the least amount of offensive value.

“A great hitting catcher is a luxury.”

Or its such a a rarity when one is available that half the league begins to show interest to obtain him.

Btw Boston had the highest payroll in MLB. They can afford to hide their catchers with that money bought lineup. Not a good comparison.

IF San Diego aquires Syndergaard in a deal that nets the Mets JT.. do you think San Diego would flip Thor to the Yankees for Andujar? Solves 3rd base. Throw in Sonny for whoever you’ll get.

Andujar is not a 3B. He is a 1B or DH. Historically bad defense is not something you want at the hot corner long term.

I can’t see AZ parting with Ahmed unless someone overpays. He’s the best defensive SS in the NL, and he’s improved at the plate every year. DBacks don’t have anyone to step in at SS if he’s moved anyways, especially with Marte possibly playing CF next year

Who among us would be unhappy with an opening day lineup of:

    Nimmo – LF
    Rosario – SS
    Cano – 2B
    Ramos – C
    Conforto – RF
    Alonso – 1B
    McNeil – 3B
    Jones – CF
With our starting rotation of deGrom, Thor, Wheeler, Matz, Vargas

We don’t need to trade away major assets. We don’t need to sign super star free agents. We can still have a great offense and a fantastic rotation..

You’re right. He isn’t the defensive player in CF that he once was. But, at the plate, he would be an asset, with his oWAR of 2.6, and ..281/.313/.419 last year. Great clubhouse guy, I would play him in LF with Nimmo in center and Conforto in RF.

I’d definitely part with Nimmo as the headliner. Conforto is the better hitter and Rosario would b a non starter for me. He’s got a really exciting mix of tools and if ur a met fan u wouldn’t want him to put them all together finally somewhere else. Nimmo and one of the other 3 mentioned prospects. Hell I’d even go 2 of those prospects and Nimmo and give up a lower level lottery ticket guy as well. Mets need Realmuto if they r going to compete. They have a giant hole at Catcher, 1B and CF. And I don’t think Nimmo is the answer in CF. But, AJ Pollack could be.

Two ways to go, sign a catcher and pollack and either sign a lefty or trade Lagares for a lefty…or do something with Noah a third team and realmuto like trade Noah to padres and get something like wil Myers a decent prospect and realmuto (pads then send top prospects and maybe one of their outfielders to marlins), sign a lefty or do the Lagares for lefty trade and sign pollack. Those are my two ways of going about it but I’m sure my idea sucks lol

I just feel Myers could help at first third and outfield. My only issue with signing someone like pollack too is that when ces comes back u have four outfielders that all should start everyday. Yes this is counting on everyone being healthy but still.

You think the mets want a career .210 hitter at catcher, a .250 hitting center fielder, a reliever, and a failed pitching prospect for Thor, who has a sub 3.00 career ERA and has a unique skill set that no one else in baseball has (plus 3 years of control)

Stay the course like Preller has been doing. Look for more affordable options like Gio Gonzalez for now and keep sifting through trade offers looking for a bargain long term addition. Names like Jakob Junis, Mike Leake, Dylan Bundy or Jon Gray all make sense. Pair one of them with Gio Gonzalez and call it and offseason from the pitching side of the ball.

Grab Moustakas and Alcidies to hold down 3B/SS respectively to enter the season and go with that.

Any combination of Wil Myers, Kirby Yates, Craig Stammen, Robbie Erlin, Jacob Nix, Brett Kennedy and Luis Perdomo could be packaged in some way to acquire one of the second tier starters and Maybe another veteran middle INF.

Myers has value. He is just over-paid. That’s the difference. When he plays he is actually really good. The organization has just miss-managed him. Constantly changing his position, and him getting hurt in the process. He isn’t trash, that contract is very redeemable if he has a really good 19’.

Are the Pirates not viewing Kang as an option at SS? Even after missing nearly 2 whole years, he’s still probably a better option at short than a Gonzalez/Newman combo. Another better option may even be trying out Pablo Reyes at short. He looked a lot better in his September call-up than Newman did.

Agreed and yes, they are content with Kang and Moran at 3rd. Everything is about biding time with this management. Get rid of Nova and $8.5m, pick up a spot starter in Lyles so he can join Kingham and Brault every so often and try to get through the 3rd inning, as we wait for Keller to be called up
Shortstop is much the same. Let Mercer go, pick up a utility player from Cleveland to work with Newman, as we wait for Tucker in a year or two
And when those spots are filled, they’ll apply the same logic in another position
No real plan with this management group. Tread water for a decade, compete once in a while, repeat

Agreed. Can’t wait for the same, tired old spewing from Nutting, Coonelly, Huntington & Hurdle of how they think they will be competitive in 2019, after yet another salary dump. This article mentions Pittsburgh’s interest in a potential trade for a defensively adept SS that doesn’t hit well, for a projected $3.1M. Before Jordy Mercer they had Clint Barmes on a $10.5M/2 yr deal (2011). He was another defensively adept SS that didn’t hit well, yet years later the Pirates want the same type of player for even less money? That’s being competitive in a division with the Cubs, Cardinals & Brewers? With the rest of baseball’s division leaders? Hell, the only thing they’ll be competing for is the cellar in the division, but I’m confident they can win that rather easily with Cincinnati’s young team making positive strides. The only people more delusional than the Pirate’s (mis)management team are their ticket buying fans.

Since Rendon has been a better player than Harper in most years and isn’t already trending down in his career, is everyone expecting around $500-600 million for him? He’s also still decent in the field while Harper rated as one of the worst fielders in the game last season. There’s little comparison between the two players – Rendon should be worth more than Harper, no question.

He doesn’t hit free agency until 28-29 whereas Harper is a free agent at 26. At 28-29 seven years is as good as it gets. Without steroids men peak between 25-29. That’s why Harper/Machado are more valuable than other free agents.
