J.T. Realmuto Talks In “Advanced Stages”

By Steve Adams | January 31, 2019 at 2:10pm CDT

The Marlins’ trade talks centering around J.T. Realmuto have reached “advanced stages,” reports Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, who lists four possible suitors still in the mix: the Padres, Reds, Dodgers and Braves.

While the report seems to advance things from previous levels, it should be pointed out that this isn’t the first time talks have reportedly gained momentum. In fact, that exact terminology (“gaining momentum”) was used last Friday with no deal yet coming to fruition. Earlier this week, the Reds were said to have “made progress” on a Realmuto swap before those reports were walked back, and it’s now been three weeks to the day since the Marlins were first reported to be in “substantive” trade talks regarding Realmuto.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes, it seems clear that there has at times been a concerted effort to convey the idea that talks have been more productive than is the case in actuality. Perhaps that’s the Miami organization trying to pressure other clubs to inch their offers toward the reported sky-high asking price, but with all due respect to those involved, it’s become difficult to determine just how close a deal is to reality. For instance, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Dodgers aren’t even active in their pursuit at the moment but adds the Rays to the list of current pursuers; Frisaro’s report, in contradictory fashion, says the Rays and Astros look to have largely bowed out of the race while listing the Dodgers as a factor. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweeted last night that the Padres are more involved than the Dodgers.

The greatest cause for optimism regarding a terminus in this exhausting saga could be the latest column from The Athletic’s Dennis Lin (subscription required), wherein he writes that there are “signs that [the asking price] has come down in recent days.” The Padres have reportedly sought an extension with Realmuto as a contingency in any trade, though Lin now writes that the organization remains confident it could sell the catcher on its promising future even though the Marlins have denied interested teams a window to negotiate a long-term deal.

Over the past week, the Padres and Reds have been the two teams most strongly linked to Realmuto, with Atlanta, Los Angeles and Tampa Bay oft rumored to be involved to varying extents. The continually conflicting depiction of the extent to which each is (or isn’t) interested makes individual updates perhaps worth taking with a grain of salt. However, the pronounced increase of rumors surrounding Realmuto does seem to lend credence to the notion that the Marlins have upped their efforts to find a palatable deal.

Brewers fans are now threatened by the Reds? I still chuckle a bit when I think about the Brewers being relavant. You all have such a storied franchise you should be proud of. Like when I think baseball, first think I think of is Milwaukee and how beautiful Milwaukee County Stadium was. Please Wisconsin, please continue to share your expertise on the game of baseball. Especially like making illogical comments about other teams farm systems. Please, I need more of that.

yea you’re right, because Grandal is so good and Trea Turner has never been injured..

and if you add up the WAR those two produced over the past 4 years, we would already be a dynasty

        • padresfanaticfan

Without the Kemp trade, the Padres would not be stuck paying Olivera’s contract, Zach Eflin might be able to contribute out of the rotation and Grandal would have been traded for prospects by now.

You must be out of your freaking mind to act like Turner is an injury risk. It was ONE injury that he sustained in a hit-by-pitch. Obviously not a recurring type of injury.

That last part is a straw man and not worth addressing.

I mean he could be caught roiding up like Braun. Brewers have gaping holes at SS and 2B, an aging and declining Braun in LF, and no SP projected for more than 1.6 WAR. Pretty sure teams are more concerned about the Reds than Milwaukee repeating

The added veterans in the rotation who combined for a 4.50 ERA and 4.0 WAR? No Gray and Roark pitching in Great American Ballpark doesn’t scare me. They gave up a combined 38 HR’s in 300 IP last year. I’m sure that’ll only improve in Great American..I’ll give you Suarez and Gennett in the starting lineup but when has Puig ever lived up to anything? Not to mention Votto had a terrible year last year, lost all of his power and is only getting older. Same can be said for kemp age wise.

        • brewcrew08

        • dust44

Pirates haven’t done anything. Brewers don’t have much pitching. The Reds still aren’t as good as the Cubs or Cards tho for sure

If you’re Joey Votto then yes, that is a terrible year.

        • brewcrew08

For any 1st baseman 12 HR, less than 70 RBI and less than 70 runs is a terrible year. Sweet you get on base and don’t score when you get there. League average 1B can put up counting stats like Votto did last year in 140 games. If Votto gets on base at a .400 clip whay does it matter if you don’t drive in runs or score? It’s always good to get stranded on base.

        • brewcrew08

When you do literally nothing else? Yes it is. “An elite” 1B who has a .419 SLG%, 12HR, 67 RBI, 67 Runs and an .837 OPS isn’t good at all. His 3.5 WAR was even with guys like Wong and Mallex Smith.

        • atlbraves2010

steamer is projecting puig as a 3win player next year…and to say Votto had a terrible year, he was still a 3.5 win guy, who steamer is projecting the same next year. Sure, Votto may no longer be the 30+HR guy, he is still probably the best player in baseball at getting on base. I would still take Votto over probably 25 other first baseman in baseball.

    • earmbrister

Yes, that would be a heckuva lineup, without any real soft spot. Brewers have holes in their middle infield, and the Cubs and Cards have a couple of lineup issues as well.

Yup. Confirmation that the last three weeks of updates” have been mostly fake news planted stories by agents with their lackey writers.

If/when the Marlins actually receive an offer involving even one of these top 50 prospects they covet, the deal will be done. I suspect the fact is that none of these genuine prospects (Ruiz, Verdugo, Urias, Senzel, Greene, etc.) have EVER been offered. If they had been, a deal would have been completed weeks ago!

Anyone ever think that this is just Mike Hill just pulling off another self-preservation job? I think it’s almost safe to say that the Marlins will eventually end up with a deal that won’t get them much more than they would have months ago, but Mike Hill needs to play it up like he exhausted everything to make the final deal look like it was the best he could get. It’s just him trying to show that this isn’t like all of the past blunders he’s been a part of under the previous ownership regime.

People can bash Jeter and Co. all they want about the moves so far, which is probably unwarranted. However, the one move that every Marlins fan has not understood has been him retaining Mike Hill from the previous regime. When the Marlins were sold, it was a foregone conclusion that Marlins fans would be rid of this Yes-man dimwit. No one can figure how he found a way to remain, unless he’s a very good self-preservationist.

Padres – send them Mejia, & 2 pitchers on the top 100 lists. One left & one right. Add whichever outfielder they want out of the 3 projected starters & slot money if needed. Then sign Harper & moustakis (aomewhere around 2 for 19$).
Would fit nicely around what’s coming, without needing rookies to produce immediately.

Why on Earth won’t the Marlins allow a potential trade partner to see if they can agree to a potential extension w/JTR? Especially since such a pending working-agreement could (potentially) enhance what that trade partner might be willing to offer.

Maybe there’s a very good reason – but what the hell is it??

Didn’t the Reds/Yankees just successfully navigate past such issues in their trade?

The Marlins have been trying to extract maximum value for a long time now. I’d think they would be open to ideas.

The Reds didn’t seem to have any bidders against them for Gray so it was a matter of the Yankees dealing them or probably nobody. The Marlins are in the driver’s seat in that at least a half-dozen teams are interested in Realmuto and at least some of them seem to have made substantive offers. But no team is going to want to be the backup offer. As frustrating as this is for fans waiting for something to happen, I think the Marlins are actually playing this quite well. They are going to the best value trade that the market has to offer.

I read these comments and a large portion of them are talking about “when is this going to end?”, “trade him already”, etc, etc…
Has anyone thought that this may be a media reporting issue? That, maybe, the writers of these articles are trying to put up something “new” in order to keep readership up?
In my opinion, I think that this is what’s going on. I truly don’t think anything new has developed in a week so they have to do something to keep readership up. The last real news was the reporting that the Reds have interest, all the rest is regurgitated information that they keep putting up over and over again.

      Writers gonna write!

Seriously though…. some media outlets like espn seem to be pure hype. Where it comes from is anyone’s guess

Everyone stands to gain from all the chatter. Agents, gm’s they both play the game. Sprinkle in some over-anxious writers and chit starts getting redundant and weird

MLBTR should get a pass, they are a rumors site after all

Maybe one way to press back against these stalled/slow deals is to enforce some sort of rule (player has to be on lineup before X day or he is ineligible to play first 10 games) or something like that. Details could be worked out, but some sort of incentive to get deals done rather than play waiting game and get burned at last minute. Last year we had all these free agents in their own private camps. It’s a bad look for baseball, IMO.

And yes I know trades would be handled differently. But just a general thought. JTR could play opening day for Miami but if traded, it would have to be before X day. A sort of offseason trade/sign deadline.

This might be the worst update yet. Previous updates have already speculated and reported players of interest in the trade…. what is more advanced than the players going back and forth?? So is this suggesting they have agreed on the players of the trade with a team…. and the “advanced” stage is now paperwork being submitted? No. This is just another non-update

The Marlins will still be garbage with whoever they get in return so what’s the point? It’s going to take way more than the 2-3 players they get back before they’re considered anything more than the 30th Team.

I’d rather see them invest the trade capital in an Ace than Realmuto. Sign a corner infielder. Then see where you stand this time next year. A big expenditure could hamstring them for years

Am i the only one who thinks this is getting a tad ridiculous? not trying to say that JT is a bad player or overrated, but his numbers are good, not elite. People are acting like he is the best catcher to ever play. I think alot of this has to do with 1) the horrific trade they made with the Brewers for Yelich and B) the catcher position being very weak in baseball. Again, a very good player, but not elite. This is a very different situation if there are 5-6 other catchers out there half as good as him. Huge discrepancy between him and the other 29 starting catchers in the game.

He’s the best hitting Catcher in MLB. Of course teams are going to be clamoring for his services. They can work on his pitch framing once they have his bat in their lineup.

JTR doesn’t frame pitches he’s in bottom 25 % and had 7 PB in 2018 and many wid pitches that most catchers would have blocked.

Hope the Braves don’t really go all out for JTR, and I’m a fan of the Braves since 1958.
They will pay a ransom in young talent and if JTR had two solid seasons he would bolt because Atlanta would try to low ball his contract.
This is the same team that went to arbitration last year with Folty over 200K, and won…arguably the ACE of the staff.

In other words, if the Padres were serious about signing Galvis, it wouldn’t have taken much, other than to offer him the starting job. He had expressed interest in sticking around. Not like he’s just trying to “get out”.

The Definition of “Advanced Stages” – It means that they have a process that they go through to make the selection, and that the process is nearly complete. A primary definition of stage is: a particular point or period in the growth or development of something (m-w.com)

After reading the definition I am kind of feeling like someone isn’t telling the truth (I am blaming Derek Jeter).

This thread has some pretty entertaining posts. I love how people say the Brewers are “projected to be worse than the Reds” and “projected to finish 4th or last in the NL Central”. How’d those “projections” that you love so much work out last year? Pretty sure nobody had Milwaukee with the best record in the National League, but yes…keep banking on your projections.

    Reply
    • ksoze

It’s just a projection. They still have to play 162 games, before anyone know for sure. Please forgive Reds fans for thinking their sorry excuse of a team can be improved. We all know the Reds could sign Harper, Machado, and Keuchel, but still be the worst team in the division.

Rangers should be in the mix to acquire the services of Realmuto. They are in bad need of a good catcher who can hit. Rangers don’t have any “blue chip” players in their farm system, but are loaded with “Red chip” players who could be dealt.
