Market Notes: Machado, White Sox, Mystery Team, Kipnis, Marwin

By Steve Adams | January 15, 2019 at 12:39am CDT

Despite recent reports that the White Sox have made an eight-year offer to Manny Machado, a parade of others are reporting that the team has not moved off of its previous seven-year offer. Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted that the ChiSox have not made any alterations to their original seven-year offer, which was put on the table about two weeks back. Bruce Levine of 670 The Score/CBS Chicago suggests the same, via Twitter, adding that the offer presently on the table to Machado is valued between $25-30MM annually. That’d peg Chicago’s offer somewhere in the $175-210MM range — well shy of Machado’s reported $325MM+ target.

  • While the White Sox have gone to some unique measures to make Chicago a bit more appealing for Machado — acquiring his brother-in-law, Yonder Alonso, and signing close friend Jon Jay — SNY’s Andy Martino writes that Machado won’t be wooed by anything other than the largest offer (which goes without saying for the majority of free agents). More interesting from Martino’s report is the possibility of some dark-horse teams in the mix on Machado. While Martino acknowledges that the “mystery team” trope is overplayed and is “often mocked for good reason, we hear reliably that it’s true in this case.”
  • The Indians are still dabbling in trade talks, but it doesn’t sound as if the team has much hope of moving Jason Kipnis. According to Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer, there was an effort to do so previously. But while an improved second half helped the Cleveland cause, the crowded second base market made it hard to find any traction. The 31-year-old has turned in below-average offensive seasons for two years running, but he’s still a useful player and has a significant established ceiling. The recent showing isn’t enough to justify his $14.5MM salary, particularly with another $2.5MM promised as a buyout on a 2020 option, but the Indians surely feel they can make good use of Kipnis in the season to come. For now, he’s penciled in at second base but his ability to play the outfield could give the Indians some added flexibility as they seek a means of improving their lineup.
  • While a rumor sprang up this evening that the Braves had a deal with Marwin Gonzalez, that doesn’t seem to have any legs. Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deports tweets that the Atlanta organization has not made any offers to the free agent, though it has shown interest in him. Presumably, the Braves see Gonzalez as a potential option in the corner outfield for the coming season. His versatility would be an asset, too, as he’d be capable of covering in the infield if a need arose in the near or long term. Of course, it remains unclear whether the Braves will pursue a multi-year deal with Gonzalez or another free agent, or whether they’ll try to wait out the market in hopes of securing a quality player on a short-term deal.

Who cares about Prado, watch for the Angels to get Machado and Harper to get Mike Trout to stay. Both get 300mil n then watch Trout get 500mil.

Unless there is a major service time overhaul during the next collective bargaining window, the days of 10+ year contracts are over.

So many people on this site were convinced that last year’s FA period was weak because all the teams were saving up to go all in on Harper & Machado. That’s clearly not the case. Stats run baseball now, and the stats say paying big for the next 10+ years for what a player accomplished over the past 6 to 7 will almost always hamstring a team down the road.

It seems that this is how it’s going to be from now on. With the players clearly losing free agency power, I wouldn’t be surprised if they fight to overhaul or do away with the current team control/arb system at the end of the current CBA. We might have ourselves another strike coming…

Trout will get a ten year contract. Betts might get a ten year contract.

If Machado didn’t have two knee surgeries and a character issue, he’d get a ten year contract.

Since Harper has been in the league, he’s 13th in WAR. He’s very good, but he’s also overrated. . The last five years it’s 17th.

Forget what the stats say. What does the history of 10+ year contracts say? How many contracts of even 7-8+ years work out for the signing team? The players want everything their way. They want long contracts with multiple opt-outs. It’s smart of the teams to re-evaluate the way they play free agency. It’s just good business.

Meanwhile MLBTR was predicting 14 year deals for Harper and Machado. I don’t think they are paying attention.

They aren’t losing free agency “power”, though. Teams have just gotten smarter about giving out long deals that never work out. Look at the contracts to Pujols and Miguel Cabrera for example. Are the players going to strike while insisting on more bad deals being thrown their way?

Exactly. And with all the hype over Machado, this is the same guy that as recently as 2017 batted only .259 for the season with an OBP of .310.

He’s had some solid seasons, but thinking he’s worth 30 million a year for a dozen years is ridiculous.

          Attention fellow MLB blog posters

2018 MLB Players awarded Miguel Andujar outstanding rookie of MLB Baseball finishing ahead of Ron Acuana and Shohe Ohtani

Despite the fact MLB Players actually play the game of baseball up close with their peers ignore all that because this gentlemen SuperSinker who has never left his computer screen to pick up a baseball bat or ball let alone play baseball on any kind in a competitive level has officially dubbed Miguel Andjuar as the least successful infielder and Tulo aka Troy Tulowitzki a warm corpse. Obviously Brian Cashman should pay attention to this knowledgeable baseball whiz kid.

Now if you are willing to hang on every word of this fine gentleman’s baseball expertise professional opinion you may now officially disregard all of the MLB professional baseball players who voted for Andujar because hey what to do they know? Well nothing if you want to believe this astute baseball expert.

Attention Miguel Andujar and Troy Tulowitzki we’re sorry but SuperStinker just gave you both the death nail thumbs down on both of your careers that both of you should merely simply consider retirement, perhaps a new career being an assistant analyst for this gentlemen who we all may very well be watching as the next MLB Baseball analyst on MLB TV

The Players Choice Award for Outstanding Rookie in the AL did in fact go to went to Andujar but they did not choose him over Acuna as he won the same award for the NL.
They choose Outstanding players, Pitchers, Rookies and Comeback Players in each League.
The only single awards are Player of the Year (J.D, Martinez) and Marvin Miller Man of the Year (Curtis Granderson)

What he can’t do is play 3B. Worst defense at 3B by a Yankee ever. He has the range of a boulder. He has two left feet. No 3B had more offline throws. There is nothing about fielding that he does well.

Back when Harper was drafted, he was a catcher. Let’s just move him back!

It’s human nature to resist change. Even though we’re each the result of an unbroken chain of changes, the majority of changes do, in fact, fail.

For example: playing Carlton Fisk in LF. Good idea in principle, bad idea in practice.

The White Sox rarely outbid any other teams in free agency so it’s safe to assume they won’t be “outbidding themselves” for Manny Machado. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf won’t be “a little stupid” or a lot stupid when it comes to signing off on a contract. GM Rick Hahn is smarter than most any agent and as a former associate of an agency before being hired by the White Sox he’s well aware of the tricks of their trade.

That makes no sense. If Machado or Harper go down that path the AAV will need to be closer to $40MM and the years in the 4-5 range. It’s not worth the risk of a career threatening injury to walk away from a guaranteed larger total value contract that exceeds $200MM for what you are proposing.

For that matter, he could sign a 7/225 and opt-out after 2 or 3 years. Doing that would depend on the AAV for the 1st 3 years, obviously……but that’s the nature of Opt-Outs.

If I was Machado, there is zero chance I would go to the White Sox for the prime of my career. That is an absolutely terrible team, they have no legit pitching with their ace out for the season with the dreaded TJ and about a 20% chance he never comes back, they have a nothing offense, and there is no quicker path back to obscurity for him than going to the White Sox. His defense at SS was made to look terrible by the awful staff they had in BAL, so much hard contact against made his fielding bound to suffer, and he should expect that again if he goes for the money grab and winds up in Chicago.

Sounds like you are confusing Machado with someone who actually cares about winning. Did you even watch his lazy ass in the World Series. He will take the most money regardless of who it’s from, then he’ll continue to not give it his all and his new team will regret the deal within 3 years.

As a Dodger fan I’d love to see the Dodgers resign Machado for 3-4 years at an AAV of $32-35m per year. He then can be insurance in case Saeger is not ready and then slide over to 3rd when he is. JT can then either play 2nd or 1st base. They can then trade Muncy, Verdugo and pitching to the Indians for Kluber.

He said the anonymous source is nearly 100% sure contracts will be signed before spring training begins. My source also guarantees contracts will not be in Japan, but they will once again sign for a MLB team in the USA or CANADA.

Darvish was not an elite FA, nor was he sought after by multiple teams as such.

He ended up with the Cubs by default because the were the only team willing to give him a contract somewhat worthy of a TOR starter.

Darvish has proven himself ineffective and injury prone, lacking the constitution to handle a starter’s workload in the MLB. You can try to pass off the Cubs as a FAs “preferred destination,” but there’s no indication of that yet. I hope that changes for both clubs in the near future, since Chicago is the best sports town in the world.

          Darvish’s contract was 6 years/$126M. 2018- $25M, 2019- $20M, 2020- $22M, 2021- $22M, 2022- $19M, 2023- $18M.
The only incentives he gets are a club paid Interpreter and bonuses for CY YOUNG voting. He gets $2M if he wins the CYA and $1M for finishes of 2nd-5th. If he is getting those bonuses, then the Cubs are getting good ROI on him. And starting in 2020, his Full No Trade goes away, and he can only block a trade to 12 teams of his choice. It’s a good contract for the Cubs, as his AAV goes down the last two years.

The level of toxicity and outright hatred Cubs fans display towards the White Sox is textbook inferiority complex.

Mystery team….ugh…there is no mystery secret team…you think that Machado/Lazano?Harper and Boras aren’t being stalked by blogger snitches! Manny followed the YES network and it was reported his deal was finalized.

There is no mystery team. The national sports media is putting misinformation out because they don’t want high profile free agents going to Chicago.

No, Harper and his agent was. The media merely reported it. The Cubs aren’t going to move half their roster to acquire Harper. That’s not Epstein’s MO.

Right, when you don’t like what they say the ‘national media’ are conspiring against your team and when that doesn’t make sense they go from villain to unwitting pawn…

Your imagination is impressive to say the least…

Hard to ignore that no team Manny has played for seems interested in having him back. This is a guy you need to keep away from young players, I don’t see more money making his attitude any better.

The Mystery team is the Cardinals on Machado!! They are willing to move their Shortstop, Paul DeJong to third base which puts Machado at short. Plus, they are looking for a good left handed bat off of their bench. By adding Machado it will make both their offense and defense top caliber for 2019. Also, moving Matt Carpenter to the super Utility infielder puts the left handed bat on the bench, even though he’s probably going to be starting 2/3 of the time. Carpenter being the super sub also helps rest his permanently injured back and throwing arm where he can stay off the disabled list. This
Move will make the Cardinals World Series contenders. Without this move, they are 2nd Wild Card contenders.

You can forget about the Cardinals being the mystery team. Molina won’t allow anyone to make more AAV than him. Besides, the Cards won’t sign anyone GOOD to a long term deal. They won’t go above 5 years. They won’t get Machado. His lack of hustle wouldn’t survive 1 month in STL. Mo and Dewitt like to invest their money in 2nd tier players.

If you think Carpenter isn’t going to bat leadoff and get his 700 PA, you haven’t followed Cardinals baseball the last 5 years. Carpenter, Wainwright and Molina run the team. They do what they want, when they want, and dictate where they play and what position in the lineup they bat. That’s Cardinals baseball.

Mozeliak kept them from the post season by not firing Matheny earlier, or for that matter, hiring him at all. Also, Carpenter faded tremendously in September, as did most of the young pitchers. But don’t worry, they have Molina, Wainwright and Carpenter leading the way again. What could be possibly go wrong with a 36 year old catcher, 37 year old pitcher, and 33 year old infielder with bad legs and bad arm leading the way? I mean, it’s worked the last 3 years. Oh, wait a second.

Waino will probably be gone from the field by mid-summer, but they’ll probably give him a coaching job, so he can continue to have influence.

I don’t see the Cards signing Machado because he doesn’t fit the conservative mold that StL likes. They’re all somewhat “stiff collared” up there…..even the fans. Machado’s “bad-boy image” definitely doesn’t fit in…….

BREAKING NEWS: My sources close to a MLB executive says that Bryce Harper & Manny Machado are both expected to sign long terms contracts for LOTS of money in the near future. He said the anonymous source is nearly 100% sure contracts will be signed before spring training begins. My source also guarantees contracts will not be in Japan, but they will once again sign for a MLB team in the USA or CANADA.

The source close to a MLB executive says that this BREAKING NEWS report carries about as much validity as any report by Nightingale, Levine, Morosi or any other useless reporting about Harper or Machado.

462/8328=5.5%. I think we could all hit a HR with our baseball predictions better than that figure.

Dunn also walked 1317 times and carried a career OBP of .364 and OPS of .854. Maybe we ALL could hit a HR with our baseball predictions better than that, but as far as Dunn is concerned, only 36 guys ever to play MLB have hit more HR than him. But I digress, and I will venture to say that Nightengale isn’t wrong 94.5% of the time on his predictions.

Only Bowden is worse than Nightengale. Everything he posts is click bait and the only thing he ever gets correct is the dollar amounts on contracts that have ALREADY been signed.

Look at what he said about Corbin BEFORE he signed with the Nats. 1st he said that Corbin was a lock to sign with the Yankees. Then he said that the Phillies would not be outbid for Corbin. twitter.com/bnightengale/status/107001560965039308…

Either teams feed him nothing but disinformation knowing he will immediately type it into Twitter or he is the biggest hack in the business.

Bob Nightengale has 1162 articles published. A large percentage of those were reporting on things that had already happened. I didn’t count them, but certainly more than 3 of every 4. Give him the benefit of the doubt and say 300 articles with some predictive portion. So in 33 years as a baseball writer, he has been correct 16 times if we are using that 5.5% figure. That seems about right.

Nothing substantive about Machado here. The Sox should offer him 4 maybe 5 years tops at around 150M, which is about half what he wants. Manny will do what is best for Manny. We need to consider the future perceived monetary impact of our very young outfield and pitching prospects. If we don’t sign Machado that’s okay, and Arenado looms on the horizon at the end of this season.

If that hack Nightengale is correct for once in his life, then why would ANY team be out on Machado? $25 million is peanuts in today’s game for a player that averages over 5 WAR in full seasons. It’s not in the top 10 in AAV.

Who was the mystery team last offseason? Darvish went where everyone expected him to go. JD Martinez went where everyone expected him to go. Who signed the biggest contract for position players?
