Cameron Maybin Arrested On DUI Charge

By Steve Adams | March 5, 2019 at 6:29pm CDT

Outfielder Cameron Maybin, in camp with the Giants as a non-roster invitee, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last Friday, according to ABC 15 News, citing a Scottsdale police report. Per the report, Maybin was arrested at 2:43am with a .127 blood-alcohol content, which is north of the legal limit of .08. Maybin was cooperative when arrested, officers noted within their report. Maybin has since appeared in multiple games for the Giants. The team issued a statement today indicating that it is “aware and monitoring the situation.”

The 31-year-old Maybin, signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to Major League Spring Training back in February, had hoped to secure a spot in a thin Giants outfield mix. Currently, San Francisco has Steven Duggar, Mac Williamson, Austin Slater, Chris Shaw and Rule 5 pick Drew Ferguson as options on the 40-man roster. Gerardo Parra, Craig Gentry, John Andreoli and Mike Gerber are among the Giants’ non-roster options, in addition to Maybin.

If they didn’t rely on Kershaw then why give him an extension? Cmon man. Some newbie gets signed and has some drinks, gets popped and now the whole clubs falling apart? Get out of here. Typical dodger fan.

They gave him a one year extension because of everything he’s done for the organization. His numbers still reflect he’s somewhat worth the money considering his history and HOF eligibility. Dodgers brass want him to retire a Dodger and that’s worth the money. We have like 8 viable starters anyway, whatever Kersh does on the field is icing on the cake. You telling me a Buehler, Urias, Hill, Ryu, Maeda rotation isn’t good? Kershaw was also hurt last year and put up good numbers, so why can’t he do that this year…

There was no physical assault. He grabbed for the cell phone during an argument and his wife fell off her chair. It sucks that the public is allowed to get involved like this.

Four beers is a big deal if you decide to drive. Your reflexes are slower. If you have kids or loved ones who travel in cars, you should want all drivers completely sober. Gotta believe that you could hire a designated driver among the many fans who visit spring training, otherwise uber, lyft, taxis as others have suggested.

3:32 Why are the comments turned off for the Giants CEO story? You site is the best place to read about trade rumors, but you are transforming it via comments and chats into a good place to talk the business of baseball. Blocking comments on certain topics destroys that. Ban or block the trolls and allow discussion on all things baseball.
          Tim Dierkes
3:35 When I started MLBTR, it was not a goal of mine to police and moderate people’s comments on domestic violence or things of that nature. From what I’ve seen thus far when we did have comments on for these types of topics, I’m not interested in hosting that discussion or using our resources to do so. So, we’ll pass along the news because it affects the way the team is run, but you’ve got many other options to discuss that video.

I get all that but its contradictory to post an article for us to read but then state there is no place on this website to discuss those type of things. So why post the information at all to begin with…click bait perhaps? I dunno either the site is the place for those topics or it isn’t, there really isnt a grey area it would seem.

If MLBTR doesn’t want people to comment on certain stories, don’t post them. This whole argument that the particular situation was not relevant to MLBTR is trumped by the fact that MLBTR chose to post it. It’s called common sense…look into it. Quite frankly, MLBTR is losing credibility on a regular basis simply due to how it is being handled.

I have no idea what your video comment is supposed to suggest.

As Tim has indicated, the DV-related posts have launched ridiculous sideshows full of nonsense that quite often goes well afield of the post itself, let alone baseball. We can’t police those comment sections in a logistically feasible way, so we haven’t hosted debates in them.

Video evidence of an incidence has a much larger effect on people and their reactions. I may be wrong and mis-remembering (or just making it up in my head) but wasn’t there articles about DV incidences with Jose Reyes, Addison Russell, Aroldis Chapman, etc. that were posted and could be commented on? I truly don’t remember if comments were turned off on those articles, and if they were than it’s consistent. However, if they weren’t than what’s the difference?…thats where my suggestion of the effects of visual evidence has as a whole, it changes everything for whatever reason.

We aren’t letting “all heck loose” here or anywhere else. We try to allow discussion and only remove the comments that violate our policies. In some cases, we anticipate (or come to believe after seeing the discussion unfold) that we can’t do that in a reasonable manner. We aren’t picking who readers get to trash, just trying to manage the comment section in a manner that makes it enjoyable for the majority of our users and is logistically feasible for us.

Thanks for the reply, Jeff. Gotta look at the optics of the situation though. The previous threads on DV cases and DUIs have all been similar to this one—a slew of trashing on the involved players (arguably deserving, depending on whom you ask). Hard to argue that responses couldn’t be anticipated regarding Maybin on this thread. However, a similar DV situation for a rich white executive and suddenly public commentary is blocked. Not looking to insinuate anything, but consistently would definitely be appreciated in matters like these.

Being sober is not a prerequisite for being a DH. Mickey Mantle was a self admitted drunk. If the DH had been around back then, he could have extended his career another 10 years. Big Papi was a mediocre player.
