Yankees Notes: Gio, Florial, Hicks

By Connor Byrne | March 16, 2019 at 6:07pm CDT

The Yankees, first connected to free agent Gio Gonzalez earlier this month, have maintained interest in the left-hander, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets. There is no indication the two sides are close to an agreement, however, Heyman adds. The Yankees initially showed interest in Gonzalez before ace Luis Severino went down with shoulder inflammation, and now the club knows the right-hander is likely to miss at least the first month of the season. Additionally, the Yankees will open the year without lefty C.C. Sabathia, who’s recovering from multiple offseason surgeries, though it seems he’ll make his 2019 debut before Severino.

Without Severino and Sabathia, the Yankees are set to open the season with Domingo German and Luis Cessa as their best starting options behind the Masahiro Tanaka–James Paxton–J.A. Happ trio. While the 33-year-old Gonzalez is far more proven than German and Cessa, the Yankees may not feel the need to add him or any other established hurler to their rotation if they expect Severino and Sabathia back in relatively short order. Should the Yankees spurn him, it would continue a disappointing trip to free agency for Gonzalez, who has encountered a tepid market after a strong 11-year run divided among Oakland, Washington and Milwaukee. Through 1,814 innings and 313 appearances (307 starts), Gonzalez owns a 3.69 ERA/3.63 FIP with 8.67 K/9, 3.77 BB/9 and a 47.2 percent groundball rate.

More on the Yanks…

  • Outfield prospect Estevan Florial suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right wrist during Saturday’s game, the Yankees announced. It’s not yet known how much time Florial will miss, but he’ll undergo further testing Monday. Florial, who’s regarded as the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect, had been enjoying an impressive spring prior to the injury. The 21-year-old slashed .355/.429/.516 in 31 exhibition at-bats, though he wasn’t in the running for a season-opening roster spot in New York. Not only are the Yankees loaded in the outfield, but Florial hasn’t gotten past the High-A level yet. Florial logged 339 plate appearances there last year, when he hit .255/.354/.361 but also missed nearly three months with a fractured hamate bone in his right hand.
  • At the big league level, center fielder Aaron Hicks may open the season on the 10-day injured list, general manager Brian Cashman admitted Friday (via James Wagner of the New York Times). Regarding Hicks, who has been on the shelf throughout this month because of lower back issues, Cashman said: “We’re running out of time. We’re going to do what’s right for us in the long haul.” The Yankees made a long-term investment in Hicks, 29, less than a month ago when they signed him to a seven-year, $70MM extension. If Hicks misses the beginning of the season, New York will deploy fourth outfielder Brett Gardner in center, where he carries extensive experience.

Florial with a second major injury to his right hand/wrist already in his career. This one sounds like it could cost him a lot of time.

Hey Gmet-the only thing that the Mets will
land at this time is a good caddy for Cespedes so that he doesn’t hurt his abdominals carrying his own golf bag.

Wagon Wheel wants to banish “TC” for this role so he is out of his hair in the front office.

Hey Look it’s crybaby mikey the Met hater with his IQ of 55. So who’s pitching for the stankees, who’s playing SS for the stankees, what happened to the now CF for the stankees, and the future CF for the stankees, has Stanton learned to PUT THE BALL IN PLAY when it’s after the 6th inning for the stankees. Tulo is 0-11 with 8 ks in his last few games for the stankees. STAY FOCUSED OF YOUR STANKEES. I only jump on you when you met hate

Severing, Paxton, Tanaka, Happ, and CC with German, Cessa, and Loisiga as spot starters.

As for SS, could be DJLM, Wade, or Tulo.

Isn’t your 2B older than every single position player on the Yankees?

DanthethriLESS—Except for your CF(not really 34 but much more running that a 2B) right now, and CC(37-Mr dripping of sweat in 1est inning & 100lbs too much) & Happ(1 tr younger-that 2 of you SP). Your # 4(Cessa 1 & 4 w/5.24 era) & 5(German 2 & 6 w/5.57 era) Now let’s talk about TULO-since you opened that door. He is 0 for 11 on his last few games and hits a might 217 in 27 PA with 11ks(that not allstar stuff). Let now go to Mr Passball-Gary Sanchez who hitting a whooping 227 after leading ALL OF MLB IN PASSBALL w/18 in only 76 games as a C. If you come at me be careful…

Hey 4-is that what your wife calls you? So may I text her and ask who is number 1,2 and 3 in her life? Your neighbors report that you have been running around in a jets hamlet these last few weeks. Is that why you haven’t been posting?

We were hoping that this was not luck of the Irish and that you had in fact hedged your bets this year and switched early. Knowing how you Usui’s ally crawl under a rock and stop posting after the ASG when your season is typically over.

So have fun pounding sand uphill as your jealousy must bow down to a 100 win team that got better. And enjoy watching your PED poster boy, Cano as his skills diminish by the day.

Do you know that when Manny Machado’s massive contract is completed, he will be Cano’s age this season? And Fred has no friends in the owners meeting and commissioners office, so there will be no DH in the NL for many years. What do you do with Robbie Cano? Oh no…..

So listen your posts are rambling here. We’re all concerned that it’s not just that you are a deadbeat….perhaps ask the Mrs. to get you some new meds? Or is it that she wants to actually make you # 5 or #6 this season as she is planning on adding a few more favorites over “Mr. Unreliable”.

Not a Yankees fan, but a Mets lover talking smack to one is insane. For all the off-season machinations in the NL East, the standings could well be the same in 2019. That would mean the Mets again finishing fourth. Zero organizational depth at both the major and minor league levels., Every team has injuries. The good teams find a way to fill in and survive. A team like the Mets folds like a cheap suit., Two starting pitchers will only get you so far. What will the Mets do when a position player gets hurt? Call up Tim Tebow? Predication: In two years, Brodie’s Boys will be the 2018 Orioles. Woeful franchise.

Yankee fan here. Could careless how how you feel. the only issue i have is not finding a legit LF to push Gardner to 4th outfielder duties. injuries to players you don’t anticipate happen. if cash felt the price of Corbib or Kluber was too high then i trust his evaluation. what other true #1s have been moved this year? none… because most aren’t being made available. Paxton and Happ were good additions.

Completely agreed. Buuuuut, pack, cc, and severino could be out for extended periods of time and we will still compete with this offense. We knew this going into the year. Oft injured players, we knew the risk. People forget we won 100 games last year and severino was the worst pitcher in baseball the second half.

Isn’t Frazier going to push Gardy? The only obvious upgrades in FA were Cutch, Pollock, or Harper. They all got paid pretty well. If the weak link of your offense is Brett Gardner you’ll be alright. I don’t think it would’ve been smart for NY to tie up any money to an aging OF long term.

Hey Wood….Grady didn’t whistle at Mrs. Wood. It was some other guy who has little hair and shaves his head. So get over your anger and stop your armchair GM posture. Gardner does not stink. He does deserve to be on the roster. He did fade in the second half the past two seasons because the Yankees needed him to step up and play. So he sucked it up even though we all knew it was going to affect his performance.

Move on. In fact with your negative attitude, may I suggest a comphy box seat at Chitifield? There will be plenty of deals after Mother’s Day when it is clear that the Mets have fallen out of contention.

That’s also a really optimistic view. I understand Sheffield has a chance to be good. But he is still a prospect. Tough to say he will have a better career when Sheffield has thrown less than 3 innings in the bigs and Paxton has a career 3.4 era. Coming off a career year with 200+ KS. I hope your right. But if Paxton stays healthy, he is as dangerous as any left-hander in the league

Whether it’s a strong crowd or not doesn’t matter, the outfield is crowded. Judge, Hicks, Stanton, Gardner, and Ellsbury (Yes he still counts until they cut/trade him) are all on the 25 man roster and can’t or won’t be sent to the minors. Add in Frazier and you have 6 major league outfielders and only 3 spots to play them.

So Hicks goes down, not the end of the world, creates an opportunity to see what Frazier can do or what Ellsbury can do to rebuild some value if he ever gets off the IL.

“are all on the 25 man roster” No that would be the 40 man roster. Ellsbury has been reported to probably not even play in 2019..that’s 5. Stanton would be horrible in LF, Hicks is definitely injury prone, and Gardner is on his last legs. Add that all up, and the questions surrounding Clint Frazier..you can now see the depth concern. Please people don’t include Florial.

Why would Stanton be horrible in LF? DRS and UZR both had him above average in LF last season and he’s been an above average RF throughout his career by DRS, UZR and Statcast.

First off Stanton only played a handful of games in LF last year, so whatever stats your using are a small sample size. Stanton doesn’t have the range to play such an expansive LF that exists in Yankee Stadium. Finally RF stats can’t be used for a LF.

While you make some good points I don’t necessarily agree Stanton is horrible in left. He’s serviceable but not atrocious and also not reliable with limited range and outfield instinct. In fact I would never have him in left in any big games or even close regular season games. Saying that I honestly felt the Yanks made a calculated mistake trading for Stanton rather then waiting for Harper who fits better. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stanton has a better offensive season this season and maybe the next few seasons over Harper, but the fact is he’s either an everyday RF which we already have or he’s a DH which is not what we needed as I feel the DH spot should never be clogged up with one guy. Stanton will be fine in pinstripes but time will tell if Cashman really screwed up. Stanton will never opt out after 2020 season in this market so he’s a Yankee for life.

Gardner can still play. 2.8 WAR last year, he’s useful, can field, run, and has a little pop. If that’s who the Yankees are putting between Judge and Stanton, I think their OF will survive for a bit.

That would be a horrible defensive outfield.

Calm down Steve. Take one on the Chin or start following the Mets

we don’t want any of your stankee jumper. stay in The S Bronx. And IQ55 I know I’ve been to many more stankees games than you because I was raised 5 mins away and the new stankee park is where I played my HS games at. But our fences were deeper except for CF.

Hey Shield-point well taken. So because he was raised 5 minutes away he has been to more games. That makes no sense like EVERYTHING else that farts out of his mouth. I mean, how many people who live 5 minutes away actually go to many games. I’m not agreeing with the economics of Yankee baseball.

However the truth is spoken that Mr. Little (that’s what the Mrs. calls him) is a Bronx born Mets’ fan.

There are only two plausible causes of such a disorder; either some kids in the neighborhood kicked his butt, or he is the victim of abuse at home.

Care to weigh in Mr. lightweight, 4?

Why would you say that? CC not hurting this team with his one year 8 million contract.

Hicks has a history of injuries,as does CC,and Tanaka. All have spent multiple times on DL. Wade will be the fourth outfielder, Red needs some time to get back into form, Ells is not an option. Another starter or field player goes down,Yanks are in trouble.Florial just unlucky.

Maybe the Yankees should be like the Rays and consider using RPs as openers. At least while their starters heal up.
