Injury/Rehab Notes: Tulo, Lamb, Jeffress, Heaney

By Steve Adams | April 3, 2019 at 6:43pm CDT

Yankees shortstop Troy Tulowitzki exited Tuesday’s game with a left calf strain and will “almost certainly” head to the injured list, manager Aaron Boone tells reporters (Twitter link via the YES Network’s Jack Curry). If and when Tulo does hit the IL, he’ll bring the Yankees’ total to a staggering 11 players on the shelf, including two left-side infielders in as many days. Third baseman Miguel Andujar went on the injured list due to a labrum tear yesterday, and with both him and Tulowitzki out of the picture, the Yankees will be relying on a mix of Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu and Tyler Wade around the infield. Young Thairo Estrada is already on the 40-man roster and could get a call to help provide some depth while Tulowitzki is out. There’s no firm timetable for Tulo just yet.

Some more notable health updates from around baseball…

  • Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb pulled up lame while legging out a double in this afternoon’s game, and the early diagnosis is a strained left quadriceps, per The Athletic’s Zach Buchanan (Twitter link). Lamb will undergo an MRI tomorrow to further evaluate the severity of the injury. If Lamb is to miss time with the injury, the D-backs can increase Christian Walker’s role at first base and perhaps mix in Alex Avila a bit as well. The 28-year-old Lamb has gotten off to a slow start in 2019 as he looks to rebound from a 2018 campaign that was ruined by shoulder troubles.
  • Brewers righty Jeremy Jeffress is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A San Antonio tomorrow, tweets MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. He’s been sidelined with some weakness in his shoulder but hasn’t been diagnosed with any structural damage or significant injury. Jeffress has been building strength since being slowed down in mid-March and will test out his shoulder over a series of appearances with San Antonio. President of baseball operations David Stearns recently suggested that mid or late April could be a reasonable return date for Jeffress, whose importance to the team only increased with the revelation that Corey Knebel will miss the entire 2019 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
  • The Angels announced yesterday that a CT scan revealed “chronic changes to the elbow” in left-hander Andrew Heaney. Ominous as that sounds, Heaney will be cleared to resume a throwing program within the next week to 10 days. He’s also undergoing a cortisone shot to help combat the discomfort in his elbow. The good news for the Angels is that there seemingly wasn’t any evidence of structural damage regarding Heaney’s ulnar collateral ligament. Heaney has yet to appear in a game this season and was limited to just 1 2/3 innings early in Spring Training, so even once he does resume a throwing program, he’ll still be several weeks from surfacing as an option in the Halos’ rotation.

You know what everyone will say…”It’s because he played on turf in Toronto and it ruined his career.”

And yet he could literally do everything but die and we’d still be paying his lofted salary. One instance where it pays to do absolutely nothing!

Good news. But problems is Eppler acted as if pitchers would be healthy. Bringing in fringe pitchers like Cahill and Harvey don’t exactly inspire confidence and certainly don’t stack up well against the better teams. They need a solid 1-2 punch in their rotation.

They probably liked Stanton’s stoic professionalism over Harpchado’s as well.

The Angels solution to every problem for years has been a cortisone shot and get back to work.

Hopefully it works out better this time than it has for the other couple hundred pitchers that merely saw their injuries get worse and worse on this ‘bandaid & walk it off’ solution of the team

I’ve had “chronic changes” in my shoulders and elbows for years and it’s always meant progressing arthritis, not sure if their doctors are meaning it the same way here. Not much they can do about it aside from arthritis medications and operations from time to time to clean up the joints if that is what it is.

Just 52 games? The Yankees kept saying that he was healthy and moving better than he had in years and that they expected him to be their shortstop all season. Presumably they planned on trading Didi when he returns? Guess it didn’t work out that way and if history is any clue, Tulo will not play much more this season.

I can’t say Tulo getting hurt is a surprise. Been saying that he belongs at first or DH for years. His body can’t do SS anymore. Fragile player. Yanks weren’t paying for Manny anyways.

Tulo needs to humble himself and admit to himself his body can’t do it any longer at SS . That was part of the argument behind closed doors with the Jays. He wouldn’t defer to younger and healthier players so the Jays released him. It would have been nice that the Jays didn’t throw him under the bus though even though Tulo’a attitude stinks.

Except he doesn’t hit enough to be 1B or DH, not anymore anyway. His only value is as a SS which he’s too fragile to play, hence Toronto dumping him.

It is pretty amazing for us old folks who remember when players’ off seasons were spent either partying hardy or working a job. Now, supposedly, they all have work out routines.

They all have their own trainers, fitness experts, mental wellness experts, sexologists, nutritionists, proctologists, psychologists , and experts in every field.

And they’re getting hurt in record numbers.

Time to visit the neighborhood clinic or horse doctor instead….or get a job. Granny Clampet (M.D., as in Mountain Doctor) could take care of all these guys.

(Of course so could Ellie Maye……and Jethro for those so inclined.)

You have a selective memory then. Players have always gotten hurt. The athletes are obviously better now – bigger, faster and stronger – and those things lead to an increased level of play and a slightly higher risk of injury, sure, but there’s not much data showing that injuries are more prevalent now than in the “old days,” whatever criterion you’re using. We of course, don’t have much data before 1966 when the modern DL/IL was instituted. In the early days of baseball lots of players just got released once they got hurt.

      Reply
      • davidcoonce74

And lots of players played through injury, often very poorly, because of the fear of being released. With guaranteed contracts and an IL now, there’s no real reason for a player to play when he’s at less than 100%, because it just hurts him and the team.

        Reply
        • GeoKaplan

And there were fewer players at MLB level in, say, 1965, because there were fewer teams (20 at that time). 50% more teams equals 250 more players in dugouts. That can have the effect of thinning the quality of players in the game.

Finally, sports medicine has evolved to a point where a player can be diagnosed with something more precise than “rag arm”, and can be treated for the injury and resume playing, instead of having to retire.

Woah there. I’m a die hard Sox fan and even I would balk at calling Cashman incompetent.

He took a calculated risk, and even with all the injuries, the Yankees problem was never going to be offensive production. The Yankees will go as far as their rotation will carry them.
