NL East Notes: d’Arnaud, Anderson, Kieboom

By Steve Adams | April 29, 2019 at 9:45am CDT

The Mets’ decision to cut Travis d’Arnaud so early in the season calls into question the decision to ever tender him a contract in the first place, Joel Sherman of the New York Post opines in a lengthy look at the process. The team’s stance is that it has spent the past two months — Spring Training included — evaluating d’Arnaud, though he’s received only 25 big league plate appearances in part due to a stint on the IL. General manager Brodie Van Wagenen simply stated a belief that Tomas Nido, recalled to replace d’Arnaud, “makes us better.” The defensive-minded Nido does give the team a glove-first backup to a more bat-first primary catcher in Wilson Ramos, though that much was always apparent — even from the time the Mets tendered d’Arnaud a $3.52MM contract while he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery. Van Wagenen asserted that he has no regrets about tendering d’Arnaud and added that he couldn’t let “a few dollars shortchange” the team or d’Arnaud from an opportunity to get a look at him this season, though as Sherman points out, those “few dollars” seem all the more costly given ownership’s track record of spending at a lesser level than one would expect from a team in the game’s largest market. More broadly, the column looks at whether d’Arnaud was a scapegoat of sorts and whether any reactionary moves might follow.

More out of the NL East…

  • Just a month into the season, the Marlins have “at least temporarily” moved Brian Anderson from third base back to right field, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Sun-Sentinel reports. The organization’s stance heading into the season was that Anderson would move back to his natural position, but manager Don Mattingly acknowledged that right field “turned into kind of a mess,” thus prompting the switch. Miami entered the season hoping that a combination of Garrett Cooper, Peter O’Brien, Austin Dean and Rosell Herrera could hold down the fort in right, however, so it’s hardly a surprise that the club ran into troubles there. The 28-year-old,  6’6″, 230-pound Cooper entered the season with all of 125 professional innings in right field and profiles better at first base, while O’Brien (also 28) is years removed from being an interesting power prospect with substantial defensive question marks. Mattingly wouldn’t comment on how long Anderson will be in the outfield, but the lack of solid in-house alternatives suggests that Anderson’s full-time move back to the hot corner won’t be anything close to “full-time” after all.
  • Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post looks at the timing of Carter Kieboom’s promotion in an attempt to determine what prompted the Nationals to make the move when they did. While Kieboom’s promotion ensures that he won’t be able to tally the 172 days of MLB service needed to reach one full year of service, Dougherty points out that service time considerations haven’t been a factor in the past when the Nats promoted star prospects like Bryce Harper, Victor Robles and Juan Soto. Rather, he speculates that perhaps Trea Turner’s timeline is closer to the eight-week time period than originally hoped, and the lack of offense from shortstop proved glaring. As for what’ll become of Kieboom, who has already homered twice, when Turner returns from his broken index finger, GM Mike Rizzo didn’t out keeping the 21-year-old Kieboom around. While Rizzo stated that Turner would return to shortstop once healed, he also indicated that the club could find a way to keep Kieboom on the big league roster at that point. The Nats kept Soto at the MLB level last year when he was initially promoted as an injury replacement, so there’s some recent precedent for that type of path. Turner is also still weeks away from a return, and it’s possible that other injuries on the roster will create a clearer opening for Kieboom to stick at the big league level even with Turner at shortstop.

Awww, that’s so nice of Sherman, showing concern for Fred Wilpon’s bottom line. And he doesn’t even work for Wilpon.

What are you talking about? I read it as more of a slap towards Wilpon since that money really should be chump change for a team playing in NY but it likely isn’t for him.

Ya they’re so cheap that they took on like 100 mil with one trade this off-season.

So cheap that they locked up DeGrom..

      Try being a Pirates fan.

Wrong Stans. Sherman has been working for the Wilpon’s for decades. He only reveals the truth every once in a while to maintain his ability to get into Yankee Stadium.

He’s so far up the Wilpon’s butt that his nose sticks out of Jeff’s wig.

Jerk. No yankee fan is jealous of the Mets since 1973 when Steinbrenner bought the team from CBS.

So not, do you actually buy season tickets for Chitifield, or are you a free loader that makes believe that they really support the team.
So square up with everyone here or know that your tainted rep will have permanent damage.

Must be soo harsh sitting in 2nd place in the toughest division in baseball.

Wilpon’s are terrible.. never spend ANY money and don’t develop ANY good players ever.

They’re an embarrassment to the sport.

The Mets have had a couple/few good years DESPITE the Wilpons and not because of them. They are one of the worst ownership groups in sports. Everyone looks at their payroll this year and go, “Oh…they spent $156m this year”, but that’s all smoke and mirrors. Included in that amount (which is the amount that the luxury tax is based upon, not actual $’s spent) is a bunch of dead money for which they have recovered a substantial amount through insurance claims.

Cespedes: $29m ($27.5m counts against the luxury cap #’s)…they should recover at least half or more….and may ultimately file a claim for the entire contract, which should be reimbursed approximately 75% of the value after a 60 day wait period. The MLB season is 187 days, so a 60 day waiting period (if modeled after Wright’s contract, which seems to be a common setup based on some digging I did)….127/187, and 75% of that is roughly $15m.

If you really want to be frustrated, he played 119 games total over 2017 and 2018, both years landing on the DL long enough to collect all of that $ too. Even if the Mets collected 1/3 of the money back after the waiting period and 75% and premium…that would be an additional $17m ownership pocketed. That estimate is likely low FWIW.

Wright: $15m ($17.25m against the luxury tax cap). They bought him out and pocketed that money. It was estimated that the buyout saved the Mets an additional $21m in liability for 2019 and 2020. This is in addition to the approximately $30m in insurance claims filed for Wright for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, which was also pocketed by ownership and not reinvested into the team.

So…to recap…the Mets ownership recouped and/or saved $51m AFTER premiums, deductibles, etc. ZERO of those dollars went back into the club from 2017-2020.. Add in Cespede’s $ which is $17m for 2017, 2018, $15m for 2019….and now you have $83m that the Wilpons pocketed that was allocated for payroll that they literally put back in their pockets.

Some quick napkin math takes the 2019 $156m payroll down to $125m…maybe $130m when you factor in Cespedes’ and Wright’s 2019 cost to the team, which puts the Mets investment into the team this year BELOW the MLB avg of $134.6m and groups them in with the following juggernaut teams :
        Texas Rangers: $129.1m
        MIL Brewers: $127.3m
        Cinci Reds: $126.9m
        AZ Diamondbacks: $124.8m
        MN Twins: $121.2m

A NYC team has the payroll comparable to THOSE teams, ranked 14th to 18th in the entire MLB.

        Pathetic.

Kieboom to 2b makes a lot of sense. Dozier probably heads to the bench with Difo being the roster casualty.

As for the Mets, some things never change. The Wilpons are a disgrace and should have never been allowed to keep the franchise in all honesty.

Only in NY does a team that seems to do everything right get so much hate.

They do a heck of a job developing players(Conforto, DeGrom, Thor, Alonso, Nimmo) and fill the holes in the off-season (Cano, Ramos, Diaz)

They’ll never be the Yanks.. 27 other teams can say the same.

This is only recently has the team filled the needed holes. Every year 1 injury kills the team, but this year the GM has built alot of depth around the team and versatile players (Davis McNeil).

Last year name one player that played multiple positions decently? Jose Reyes? Flores? Smith out in LF?

Hey Freddy—the Mets without all of the soap opera controversies wouldnt be interesting.

And check out the year end stats instead of your fantasy BS one month into the season.

Look at Thor and deGrom’s 2019 season. Let’s see what happens as their stats continue to plummet.

And bragging about over the hill Cano is dangerous. Even Mets fans will be soon enough telling you, “shut up”.

He seems like a glove-first middle infield utility player at best … I’m not sure why he’s getting ABs in the OF (where the expected offensive profile of a player is even higher). No one can feasibly expect him to produce over .250/.310/.380. He could hit .290 and not even have a league average bat with that profile.

Idiotic decision to offer d’Arnaud. And it was compounded by the decision to trade Plawecki instead of him. Plawecki>d’Arnaud and Nido. Mets would be much better with Plawecki as their backup C right now.

WaPost article was actually wrong about Harper. Nats brought him up in late April 2012, waiting just long enough to ensure a 7th season of control. Timing was almost identical to Bryant.
