Cubs To Activate Kyle Hendricks From Injured List On Tuesday

By Mark Polishuk | June 30, 2019 at 6:02pm CDT

The Cubs intend to activate Kyle Hendricks from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday so the right-hander can start that night’s game against the Pirates, manager Joe Maddon told reporters (including Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times).  Hendricks will be limited to roughly 60-75 pitches, so Mike Montgomery or Tyler Chatwood will likely be in line to throw in long relief once Hendricks’ outing is complete.

Hendricks went on the IL on June 15 with a shoulder impingement, which is the type of broadly-defined injury that has occasionally sidelined players for long stretches of time.  Fortunately for Hendricks and the Cubs, his problem seemed like a minor issue, as some rest after a cortisone shot and then some warm-up bullpen sessions have left him feeling “100 percent.”

Rather than send Hendricks to the minors for a rehab start, the right-hander will go right back into Chicago’s rotation in the hopes of continuing what has been another outstanding season.  Hendricks has a 3.36 ERA, 7.6 K/9, and 4.69 K/BB rate over 88 1/3 innings in 2019, and his somewhat early return will greatly help a starting five that just lost Cole Hamels to the IL with a left oblique strain.

With an off-day on Friday and the All-Star break looming, Wittenmyer suggests that Adbert Alzolay could be optioned to Triple-A to make room for Hendricks on the 25-man roster, after Alzolay starts Monday’s game.  Conversely, the Cubs could make another roster move to open a space for Hendricks and then, if he struggles or seems to be laboring, Alzolay could then start the Cubs’ final game of the first half on Sunday (Hendricks is tentatively slated to start that game).

I know how to make room for Hendricks. Hint, his initials are DD.

I’ve got another idea. His initials are Addison Russell.

For the last 7 games, Russell is batting .389 with an OBP of .476

7 games is not 162. what a ridiculous point to even make.

No one said anything about a full season. You don’t get DFA’d if you’re performing. That’s not why ppl get DFA’d. Ridiculous idea…

This is impossible to know. Nobody is a fan of this kid anymore, but he’s at least not a liability on defense.

They’re all struggling to get key hits against even mediocre pitching. Having watched some 80% of the games this year, it still looks like they’re having fun. I’m more inclined to think they need a new voice. Oh, and my god that bullpen. Yikes.

Disagree. Seasons are made on small sample sizes. Also, hot streaks start small. Would you have rather had Russel going oh for whatever?

If DD is the team-first professional he’s proclaimed to be, he’ll acknowledge he’s no good to the team like this and be willing to be outrighted to Iowa. He gets his salary regardless, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath, some regular PT vs. AAA pitching might help him rediscover what used to make him a serviceable bench bat.

Until then, or even if DD stays in the Majors, it’s time to see what Robel Garcia has to offer.

Descalso is making 2.5 this year and 1.5 next year. At this point cutting ties with him is like 3.5 million. Yeah that’s fine they need the production and he isn’t producing.

Either way they are paying him. Bring yo someone else in his spot making league minimum. Also not sure how it works does dfa money come off the payroll?

if somebody picks him up they pay the veteran minimum and the Cubs cover the rest, up to the full contract amount. So DFA him potentially saves the Cubs somewhere around half a million, give or take

Really? He’s thrown 8.2 innings. I know that’s more than any other pitcher that has come through the Cubs system, but let’s take a deep breath here.

Actually there are probably at least 6 Cubbies who would benefit from a stint back in the minors!

Hopefully Hendricks is healthy and has no lingering effects. No doubt, the Cubs will need all hands on deck heading into the 2nd half. Cole Hamels naturally goes into the health equation as well. As predicted by many, the NL Central will be a tight race right down to the end of the regular season. We will see real soon what moves the Cubs front ofice plans to make for the 2nd half playoff drive. The same can be said for the other teams in the NL Central. If your a basball fan it’s going be be really interesting.

I’d drop Maples. If you give him a road map he’d still miss home plate. Good to have Hendricks back. Hope King Cole will follow shortly after the all-star break and Darvish stays healthy (A big ‘if” with him.).

Then there’s Lester and Quintana. Guys who make their 32 starts year after year after year. The criteria for putting one of them on the DL must be terminal cancer or a secret alien abduction.

Brew Crew not looking like the powerhouse many thought they’d be heading into the season. Cardinals can’t get out of their own way. Plus, losing Ozuna for a while is gonna hurt. That, and Goldie being less than golden.

Cubs win the NL Central by 8 games or more. No worries, mates. Gonna be dancing on Rush St. well into October nights.

Let’s just say Hamels going on the DL has the Cubs in a little panic mode right now with bringing Hendricks back from the DL while skipping his rehab start.
