Mets Interested In Robbie Ray

By Connor Byrne | July 28, 2019 at 8:37am CDT

The Mets could trade Noah Syndergaard and-or Zack Wheeler by Wednesday’s trade deadline, but they might land at least one immediate rotation replacement in the coming days. Already connected to Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman, the club’s also “on” Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.

Interest in Stroman and Ray jibes with the notion that the Mets, despite their dreadful 2019, are aiming to contend and not rebuild next season. Whether it would be an ill-advised plan for the prospect-needy Mets is up for debate, but it seems the goal would be to collect a haul for at least Syndergaard (there’s reportedly interest in extending Wheeler) and trade from their farm to acquire Stroman or Ray. Each of those two would bring back less in a deal than Syndergaard, who’s under control for one more year than they are, but they’d hardly come cheap.

There’s little doubt Ray would cost less to land than Stroman, who owns the superior track record. But there’s plenty of value with Ray, a proven mid-rotation starter who’s on an affordable $6.05MM salary now and controllable through arbitration next season. The playoff-contending Diamondbacks might not even give him up, but if they were to send Ray to the Mets, he’d join Jacob deGrom in giving the team two elite strikeout pitchers.

The 27-year-old Ray is obviously much less effective overall than deGrom, but Ray’s nonetheless on his way to a third straight season with a sky-high strikeout rate and a sub-4.00 ERA. Ray has logged a 3.95 ERA/4.27 FIP with 11.85 K/9 through 123 innings. He has, however, walked upward of four batters per nine for the second year in a row, posted a sub-40 percent groundball rate for the second straight campaign and kept up his years-long struggles with home runs.

The Mets are creative, at least. I’ll give them that. Doesn’t make much sense, but we don’t need to talk about that again

Until now, the words “Mets” and “creative” have never, in history, been spoken together in the same sentence.

Gotta disagree, just because something is creative doesn’t make it clever. The Bobby Bonilla deferment was a creative way to save money short term.

Ha it actually worked out for the Mets. By deferring bonillas money they made enough room to acquire Mike Hampton. Then when Hampton left for Colorado they got a draft pick in return that pick became David Wright. Also Red Sox are paying Manny Rameriaz 3.4 million until 2026

I assumed that’s why they hired a new GM, but it appears that ownership never wants them to completely try to rebuild. They’re going to have to sell some of their better players if they want to become winners. Too many deficiencies. The Braves, Nats, and Phillies are all light years better and will be for the foreseeable future.

Only the Mets would trade away a thoroughbred then go out and buy a couple of ponies and expect to place in the race.

Zona has deep ROY candidate Christian Walker at 1B w a .800+ OPS. So they’d have to see Smith’s .850 OPS as a big improvement or perhaps want the lefty instead. No one in the NL rosters 2 1B so Walker would need a new home.

It’s tough to embrace a rebuild in New York. There’s a lot of media pressure to win now, but you either rebuild or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways. If this team doesn’t embrace the rebuild they’re doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

There has to be some missing information here. I know Brodie has not been a good GM so far but this is bonkers stupid. Either Syndegaard requested a trade or they tried to extend him and he said “hell no I don’t wanna stay with the dumpster fire of a team any longer than I have to”.

Could the Mets know something we do not about NS possibly? Did he change something to help stay healthy but the results are suffering? If he reverts to becoming more dominant will that approach likely cause more IL situations?

It seems the owner does not want to rebuild so they are looking to replace Noah with a strong option while still looking to trade Noah..

Not a Mets fan here but there is a lot of disinformation and false rumors that teams use and this stuff surrounding the Mets sounds like that exactly. Ownership wouldn’t let the Mets GM do some of this stuff being talked about. Unless they are utter morons and then the sky is the limit for stupidity.

Now that Carson Kelly looks like the Diamondbacks catcher of the future, it would be nice for the Mets to ask about Daulton Varsho as we really don’t have any strong catching options.

From the Dback’s perspective: Dbacks are more a contender than the Mets, so there is very little motivation to sell controllable assets like Ray. Dbacks have a savvy GM (contrast Mets’ GM) who would only trade Ray for a package of near major league ready top prospects, perhaps an even better package than Stroman will fetch. So don’t think of a trade for Ray being a fire sale opportunity. It won’t be. And because of that, plus the fact that the Mets’ prospect system is pathetic, there is zero chance of a trade with the Mets. Other teams know this as well, so the Mets aren’t even “driving up the price” for either Ray or Stroman. No one is fooled.

I suspect Ray will be moved. Ray is the only piece (that has been talked about…and they are willing to move) that holds significant value. They aren’t going to be a wildcard team and they aren’t going to extend him, the organization needs a prospect infusion and it is a sellers market. His value isn’t going to be higher than right now. I think it is almost 100% Ray is moved.

I agree with you, but with two hesitations. 1. GM Hazen doesn’t want to send the message to the team or the fans that the Dbacks are waving the white flag on this season. 2. Therefore, the return package must be huge and must contain multiple near major league ready prospects and/or young, controllable major league talent (the Goldschmidt trade to the Cardinals is an example of this type of package). There is enough interest in Ray, so a bidding war might produce that result.

How long can we play the outfield the way it is. First off are we going to see Nimmo this year. Can’t kee playing the outfield with Conforto in center and smith in left, terrible. LaGares seems to have lost his way,he is not hitting and watching him play outfield this year is so so. So BVW is not the GM to move forward wake up Wilpons think of the team and the fans

The strategy of the Mets hey so ass backwards I really do not know where to start. You are in fourth place in your own division one of the worst records in the entire national league but, you come off like you are sellers and buyers all at the same time. You have a really good starting pitcher with two more years of control after this season but you want to trade him so you can acquire one starting pitcher with only one more year of team control. Someone please explain to me how that makes any sense? Here is where also this team is shooting themselves in the foot just to save their own face, you want to trade Syndergaard you have been very clear what you want for him there is a team out there with a major league ready starting pitcher who is yet to even enter arbitration and is having a decent season as well as a top ranked prospect outfielder and another outfielder in the minors who is winding it up earlier this season on the major-league roster. But you refuse to trade your picture to that team that can make your team better just because it’s the Yankees. You could have gotten Domingo German, Clint Frazier and Esteban Florial for yo what Syndergaard but because it’s the Yankees your owners said no. Best of luck staying in the land of mediocrity for God knows how long. The only way this team gets any better is if the Wilpon‘s sell the franchise.
