Padres To Hire Bobby Dickerson As Bench Coach

By Connor Byrne | November 1, 2019 at 9:40pm CDT

NOV. 1: It took a three-year pact to lure Dickerson, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). Additionally, Wayne Kirby will come over from the Orioles to serve as first base coach, Joel Sherman of the New York Post first tweeted. As Heyman points out, Kirby also has ample experience with Machado.

OCT. 31: New Padres manager Jayce Tingler is set to make an important hire as he prepares for his first year as a skipper. He’s likely to hire Phillies infield coach Bobby Dickerson as his bench coach, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets.

Dickerson, who turned 54 in September, is a former minor league infielder who has never managed above the minors. But Dickerson has logged several years as a coach at multiple levels, and the hope for the Padres is that his vast experience will help Tingler break into his new role.

If the Padres do select Dickerson, his Philly tenure will conclude after just one season. Before joining the Phillies last winter, Dickerson worked in various coaching roles in Baltimore from 2010-18, a span in which he developed a close bond with ex-Orioles star and current Padres third baseman Manny Machado. Dickerson shared some insight into his long-running relationship with Machado with Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer last winter.

“I’ll say this: When Manny puts his mind to something, it’s just unbelievable to watch,” Dickerson told Lauber. “He’s that talented. In 2013, he was the best defensive player I’ve ever seen in my life. If he’s locked in, he can change the game with his glove. For sure, I’ve seen it. The challenge is his locked-in-ness, and that’s well-documented.”

As a long-time Orioles fan, I can say that he is a outstanding coach. He gets a lot out of working with infielders, but I would also say that his work at third base is very intelligent and strong.

I think you are right about him as an infield coach. But as a third base coach he was awful. He would always get guys thrown out being way over aggressive in bad spots that would kill rallies. He has to hold some kind of record for most times getting a runner thrown out by 4 steps.

He was outstanding sending guys. Calculated aggressiveness. But for a real nice memory see Birds/Tigers 10/3/14 and Bobby D’s send of JJ Hardy off the Delmon Young double. All-time classic O’s moment.

I was at that game. All time classic orioles moment no doubt. But everyone and their brother is sending JJ there. He would consistently run the Orioles into outs. And not on bang bang plays either. Running out of innings NON calculated out by 3-4 steps kind of sending. Nice guy and like I said think he did a great job with the infielders. But to say he wasn’t a disaster as third base coach would be laughable.

That’s why we have forums like this. So that we can vent about the stupidity of our team without having to cave in and lower our expectations like so many fellow Padres fans.

      It’s cathartic.

@nowheretogobutup why? Balsley wasn’t Black or Green’s guy when they were hired and he still stayed. He can become Tingler’s guy like he did with Black and Green. And realistically there’s no one Tingler could bring in who is better.

My Padres are losers—have been for 50 years. Like my name says, padres/have/32/yrs/to/best/dodger/1st/ws/win (it took the losers 83 years since they fell out of their momma’s tail to win their 1st title). Dodger fans think they’re royalty. 5 titles in 136 years in MLB says they’re dawdling diddlers.

Opposing fans, particularly Dodger fans, come to beautiful Petco Park cause they can’t watch basebally on local TV in Los Angeles. We ought to charge Doyer fans triple their ticket price to view a game here. Add that money to Padres payroll. That money will allow San Diego to roll the dice on free agents we can’t currently afford. Call it a Competitive Balance Tax. Same with local hotels, bars, restaurants and massage parlors.

What did I miss? They say he never managed above the minors but has vast experience? Sounds more like this is a hire to try to get Manny’s “locked-in-ness” started. He certainly wasn’t locked in for us last year. No coach should ever be hired just because of their relationship with one player. That is a recipe for disaster, but to be honest, hiring Tingler was a recipe for disaster so this can’t make the situation much worse. I wonder who the GM will be in 2021?
