Mets Sign Jarrett Parker, Max Moroff

By Mark Polishuk | December 5, 2019 at 2:31pm CDT

The Mets have signed outfielder Jarrett Parker and infielder Max Moroff to minor league deals, the team announced.  Parker and Moroff will both be invited to the team’s Major League spring camp.

Parker, who turns 31 on New Year’s Day, was a second-round pick for the Giants in 2010 who only developed into a part-time option for San Francisco over 135 games from 2015-17.  After sitting out the 2018 season entirely, Parker signed a minors contract with the Angels that resulted in a .266/.394/.535 slash line and 24 homers over 424 Triple-A plate appearances, plus five MLB appearances.  The left-handed hitting Parker can play center field in a pinch and saw some action at first base for Triple-A Salt Lake in 2019, though the bulk of his experience has been as a corner outfielder.

Moroff brings added defensive versatility, as he has extensively played both middle infield spots as well as third base and even some work in both corner outfield positions.  While the 26-year-old Moroff hasn’t been able to offer is much hitting, as he has only a .183/.277/.319 slash line over 244 Major League PA with the Pirates and Indians since 2016, and also hasn’t done much at the plate at the Triple-A level.

Depth moves that literally every team makes screams ‘Mets’ to you? Good grief.

these specific players. Jarret Parker hasnt been proven to be nothing for years and Max Moroff got cut ovet Eric Stametts…who was also later cut.

I didn’t see you making these derogatory comments when Stamets was signed and he’s worse than either of them

Honestly Moroff is probably better than Stamets. Neither are good but Moroff plays more positions and is a better hitter. Stamets was Chris Davis bad.

I love minor league signings, and I think it’s really important for teams to build depth. I hate when people complain about small signings like this because they’re essentially risk-free. That said, Max Moroff is terrible.

I agree on Moroff – to an extent.

He has the potential to be the next pre-2017 Jed Lowrie. While that’s still not good, it’s good enough for a Utility player who can fill on a need basis.

That is, though, just his “potential” IMO and what that means can vary until the actual results come out. So for now, I agree that Moroff is essentially MiLFiller or, as you put it, terrible.

Max has speed and above average defense. His batting eye, which led to a fine OBP a couple of years ago in the minors got screwed up when the Pirates demanded that he hit for more power. Straighten that out and he could be a sleeper .

Hey 62- only an old timer like you would make such a ridiculous comment.

He’s a sleeper, like with the bases loaded and 1 out he’s a sleeper when he grounds into a double play.

And please don’t complain about Cano slacking on the play by jogging from 1st to 2nd.

That’s your boy wonder smiley face who made that stupid deal.

Are you kidding me? His batting eye got bewildered by higher level competition, not by launch angle or any other batting adjustment. I still would rather have TJ Rivera back than this guy.

Moroff the same for the Mets?

Seriously, he’s behind Cano, Rosario, McNeil, Lowrie, Guillorme and Gimenez, not to mention JD Davis, for IF time. In that role, by the time you need him, the season is already a disaster.

This is true for every team in baseball. If their 8th option is playing, the season is a disaster. Not offering much in the way of insight, there.

Cool story about Moroff. I saw him got pulled from a game in Buffalo when he was on Indianapolis. Two days later I saw him play in Pittsburgh and he hit a pinch hit homerun

Parker had a really nice Spring last year and looked like he’d make the Opening Day roster but got hurt. That led to claiming Goodwin when Upton went down and Parker never really got a shot up here.

Parker was and is a Giant BUST.
His failure to seize the many opportunities given him by the Giants is why the Giants have been scrambling so desperately for outfielders in recent years.

Wow, can anyone have a more appropriate name as “Moroff” when your career BA is .183 and OBP is .277? He is definitely ‘more off’ of the bases than he is on.

AAA depth moves. Mets fans should be more concerned about the Marisnick trade because he’s bad, but may be decent enough that the Mets may see him as the everyday CF. That’s what you need to worry about.
