Mets Made Offer To Edwin Jackson

By Connor Byrne | March 18, 2020 at 12:31am CDT

Veteran right-hander Edwin Jackson received minor league offers from two teams before electing to reunite with one of his many previous teams – the Diamondbacks – back in February, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports (subscription link). The Mets were the other club in on Jackson, according to Buchanan.

To call the 36-year-old Jackson “well-traveled” would be an enormous understatement. Had he signed with the Mets and then earned a spot on their roster (very likely as a reliever), they would have been 15th team for which he has pitched in the majors. Jackson already set the record when he took the hill for Toronto, his 14th MLB employer, last season. Buchanan’s piece, which is worth checking out in full, details the unusual journey the well-liked Jackson has taken thus far.

Heading into this season, whenever it starts, Jackson is likely to open with Triple-A Reno, according to Buchanan. He does have a late-spring opt-out in his contract, though it’s possible MLB will delay that deadline. It also may not behoove Jackson to take advantage of the clause, considering he lives in Arizona and stumbled in the bigs a season ago. In 67 2/3 innings divided between Toronto and Detroit, Jackson put up a 9.58 ERA/7.65 FIP with 6.92 K/9 and 4.26 BB/9.

It’s a real shame he didn’t accept it.

How’s he going to play for all 30 if he eschews offers from teams he hasn’t played for to go back to one he already had?

Wishing good luck for Edwin. Hey, anyone have anything to say about Tommy Pham’s statements?

He’s such a tool. The comments oozed self pity. Good player but out of touch with reality.

A 9.58 ERA??? Good lord I didn’t know he was that bad last year. (Cue comments saying it’d still be better than what I could do)

He had some BRUTAL (obviously) outings with the Jays last year. There was one start against the Rockies where he only got five outs and gave up 10 earned runs; there was a relief appearance against the Angels where he only recorded two outs but gave up 3 homers and 7 earned runs. Ironically after a slew of bad outings he ended up pitching three scoreless innings against Boston and then the Jays DFA’d him.

Not to mention comments from people saying ERA means nothing.

In almost 70 innings I think it’s safe to say a 9.58 is decidedly awful lol.

I can’t believe that comment didn’t smoke out the guy who claims EVERYTHING is a small sample.

his 17 year career is a small sample, trust me. edwin is only halfway through his career and hasnt peaked yet

Then he’d fit right in with the rest of the Mets pitching staff. They’ve been around for several years, and Mets fans are still talking about them living up to their potential.

Happy to see Edwin still throwing these days. He’s had some great years (and some not so great), but he is a class act and great guy. Back in 2009 he was with DET in spring training, and there were about 30 people waiting for auto graphs. Many guys passed by withour a word. Edwin actually was eating 2 slices of pizza, put them down, so he could sign for everyone. Magglio Ordonez, biggest jerk ever. Told a group of kids to walk to his car and he’d sign and give them bats, they walked about 1/4 mile and he laughed at them and got in the car and sped off.

One would think that the team with the greatest pitching staff in MLB history wouldn’t bother with Edwin Jackson.

This is what we get for stories when baseball is in hiding!
Is there a reason anybody should care about this?
