Marlins Announce Initial 60-Man Player Pool

By George Miller and Anthony Franco | June 28, 2020 at 4:14pm CDT

Today marks the deadline for teams to submit to Major League Baseball their initial spring training player pools, which can comprise up to 60 players. Players are not eligible to participate in either a spring training or regular season game until they are included in the pool. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit. However, players removed from a team’s 60-man (for reasons unrelated to injury, suspension, etc.) must be exposed to other organizations via trade or waivers.

Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.

The Marlins’ initial player pool consists of the following players.

When you are a former all-star and cannot even make a 60 man roster on a minor league deal, maybe it is time to call it a career or head overseas.

HE was fun to watch in his prime though..

i really feel like Kemp can do it again. 2019 was bad, but its not like he had a very long leash in CIN. before that he was pretty good. even in his Braves years he was better than people made him out to be.

That’s all fine and fair to say, but the Marlins gave him a shot this spring and he looked like he is done. I thought with the expanded roster, he had a shot. The fact is, he didn’t considering all of the prospects, and how bad he looked in spring.

Another fact is that if COVID hadn’t hit us, he was on the verge of being released within a day or two anyway during that time.

One would hope that the Marlins do the right thing and release Kemp to see if he can latch on to another squad’s 60 man pool.

2 things going for Matt Kemp. 30 man roster for a few weeks, and Universal DH. If he can’t make a roster, then yes he needs to try the Asia route.

also looking at this list really makes me think of how well Miami could do with a piggyback rotation format. Sharp, Elieser, and Stanek dont project as starters in a normal 5 starter system, but could really be useful piggybacking off Lopez, Yamamoto, and maybe Urena.

The marlins guy on this site won’t comment on this article. Only comments on Mets ones for some reason

To be fair, there’s a few Mets homers that do the same thing, vice versa.

I’m here. And as stated here, there are a few Mets homers that have been doing the same. The good thing is it shows that all of us in the NL East care about our baseball. Of course, it seems that fans of the Marlins, Braves, Phillies and Nats are informed about what each NL East team has, unlike the other fan base that only knows their players and whoever E!SPN, FOX Sports, and SNY tells them about.

With that said, back to the Marlins. I’m happy with this group and look forward to the season. 60-game schedule? Yes, we have a shot, just like all 29 other teams.

2020 World Series Champion Marlins? I can’t wait to see how this short season plays itself out.

Three spots left. I’m assuming that Victor Victor Mesa will be one of them.

Looks like Sean Rodriguez is joining Kemp out of town or staying home?

As a Phils fan, I would be hoping Rodriguez gets left off. He hasn’t hit in ages and whined when fans called out his poor performance last season. While the fans were a bit ruthless, S-Rod is clearly done. Miami shouldn’t let him steal utility duties from the promising Berti

I remember during spring and when the Marlins invited both Kemp and Rodriguez (and even when we signed Matt Joyce to a MLB deal), I was thinking why are we bringing in these guys when we have so many other options that are younger? And with Rodriguez I was wondering more so since Berti has proven he can play and is no Spring Chicken, but is still in prime age years and can play everywhere and is very athletically productive on the offensive side where Rodriguez hasn’t been that for awhile.

We aren’t able to let go of Joyce because of the commitment we made to him, but at least we’re not giving Kemp and Rodriguez spots over younger, more deserving pieces.

Joyce actually makes some sense in my opinion. If he flashes his hitting potential, the Marlins could wheel and deal him at the deadline for a cheap prospect. Solid pinch-hitters are always in stock
