Tommy Pham Cleared To Re-Join Padres

By Jeff Todd | July 10, 2020 at 3:49pm CDT

Padres outfielder Tommy Pham has now twice tested negative for COVID-19 infection, MLB.com’s AJ Casavell reports on Twitter. That’s the news he needed to join the club’s Summer Camp and begin preparing for the season in earnest.

Since he was able to achieve clearance rather quickly, it seems there’s hope that Pham will be ready to take the field on Opening Day (or shortly thereafter). He has about two weeks to get dialed in.

That’s not a ton of time, but it appears — given the timing — that Pham did not experience major symptoms from his infection. If he was able to maintain fitness and otherwise prepare for the campaign, perhaps he’ll be just fine with a limited run-up.

Pham has functioned as something of a quiet star in recent years. That’s just what the San Diego organization will need him to be if it’s to enjoy a breakout season.

When he gets to the inphamous Petco, that power will turn Phamtom.

He should take his talents to join the Philly Phamily.

Pham makes me think of the Cardinals. They traded Pham and picked up Ozuna to replace his “middle of the order” bat who the Cardinals didn’t resign and haven’t replaced with anyone.

    Did everyone hear that audible sound? It’s every Cardinal fan in the world crossing their fingers and praying to God Matt Carpenter has a bounce back season. >=}

      Bader, O’Neil, Thomas, Carlson, Williams.

Cardinals have a decent number of capable and cheat outfield options who are MLB ready.

I think Carlson is the only one of the group that has major upside. I could be wrong…

You’re not wrong. Bader is all sizzle and no steak. O’Neill is just Lou Ferrigno in a baseball jersey. Thomas complete unknown. Williams? Uh?

That’s good. Especially if he can start the season on time. Glad he is no worse for the wear.

The man has such a sunny disposistion, the virus probably couldn’t wait to exit his system.

I’m quite surprised that 4-5 players have already beaten COVID and are back with the team. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come and most of the positive players get back sooner than later. Let’s all send positive thoughts to Freddie Freeman. His case seems to be the worst by far. Fingers crossed that he doesn’t have any long term effects from this!

How can he test negative twice after testing positive the first time?

There are two different tests for COVID-19. One tests to see whether you have an active infection. The other is an antibody test to see whether you’ve ever had any exposure to the virus.

So he’s probably testing negative for an active infection.

Waiting on Padres to set the OF lineup. Myers should DH. NL should keep the DH. Equality with the AL….yes that’s it….equality. Down with Brown. My boycott of Petco is working!

Why should Myers DH? As bad as he is he’s still a better defender than Franchy Cordero or Josh Naylor.

Franchise has the tools to be a decent defender. Cheeseburger Naylor should be the obvious DH choice though.

on bench Naylor, Cordero, I heard only Naylor or Cordero will make the team, carrying four OF’s
