Dodgers Place Joe Kelly On Injured List

By Steve Adams | August 10, 2020 at 12:40pm CDT

The Dodgers announced that right-handed reliever Joe Kelly has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to inflammation in his right shoulder. No timeline for his return was provided. The Dodgers have recalled lefty Adam Kolarek in his place.

Kelly is still facing an eight-game suspension after throwing a fastball near Alex Bregman’s head and swapping verbal jabs with Carlos Correa, all of which eventually led to bench-clearing confrontation. He’s in the process of appealing the punishment, and a hearing on that front is set for today, tweets Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times.

The 32-year-old Kelly had a rough first season in L.A., pitching to a 4.56 ERA in 51 1/3 frames after inking a three-year, $25MM deal in the preceding offseason. He was hit hard in the playoffs as well. This year, he’s rattled off 6 1/3 shutout innings to begin the shortened campaign, although the five walks he’s yielded in that time are still a red flag. Kelly’s 97.1 mph average fastball in 2020 is still well above the league average, but it’s down about two miles per hour from its 2017 peak and down nearly a mile per hour off last year’s mark.

With Kelly out until at least next week, the Dodgers will lean move heavily on fellow righties Blake Treinen, Pedro Baez and Brusdar Graterol to set up for closer Kenley Jansen. Kolarek will give the club a fourth southpaw option to match up with opposing lineups, joining Caleb Ferguson, Scott Alexander and Jake McGee.

Unless I’m looking at something wrong, Padres team BA is 237, with OBP of 325.

The two catchers are not hitting nor is manny profar or Pham
Between cronenworth, tatis, myers they three are crushing it.
They are also in the tops of scoring runs and tops in walking.

Sucks when a team has ice cold players and very hit players. Stats can be misleading whichever way you look

Even with the skewed stats of coors field. The padres are tops in most offensive categories. They are top 10 in ba and obp. They are tops in homeruns and up there walking. The padres are way better than those stats show… 60% of there lost has been on the bullpen (supposed to be, coming in the season 2nd best) nope

That’s why he threw a breaking ball, threw the fastball so hard at em with adrenaline pumping in the moment he didn’t feel he threw his shoulder out til a whole week later. “I don’t know where my fastball is going for some reason so here’s a breaking ball” type of emotion, that’s powerful

His team did. Every Astros player suffers guilt by association so why does that not apply to other teams who cheat?

you mean a little replay room usage? Puhh please.the entire league uses replay video room. This was such a non issue. the rest of baseball is hush-hush about it. Notice how nobody talks about this? If you are so smart you’d read up more on it. It isn’t mutually exclusive to the Red Sox.

Forget Kelly, keep your eye on Ferguson. He made a few tweaks to his approach this year and has struck out 15 and walked nobody so far.

If Joe Kelly gets 8 games A’s fans must be dreading the next day or two while awaiting Laureano’s fate. Sadly I was watching Justus Sheffield finally put together a good outing yesterday when the M’s broadcast brought up “a brawl in the Eastbay.” I watched the replay of the A’s game later that night- brawl? It was more crouching tiger hidden trash -can. Hardly a brawl.

I hope the Astros coach who antagonized Laureano gets the majority of the punishment. That was embarrassing and pathetic, he’s twice RL’s age and looking for a fight? Childish and immature. It will be interesting to see how MLB interprets the scene. If it were me I’d fine the Astros coach and give him two weeks off with no pay. Id have some empathy for RL and give him two days off with no pay. Something tells me it will not play out that way. Let’s see…..

“I hope the Astros coach who antagonized Laureano gets the majority of the punishment.”

He certainly should, but the MLB has already established they have no interest in actually punishing the Astros. Kelly already got 8 more games than all the cheaters combined; Laureano will be next.

The Union protects the Astros. Just like how the union will talk to Manfred today about reducing Joe’s suspension. If it wasn’t for the union getting immunity the investigation would only be Mike Fiers and a FEW other players.

I love the Joe Kelly’s and Trevor Bauer’s of the MLB. It should be a tradition for pitchers to throw the ball over the outfield wall when taken out.

Technically, a lot of pitchers already do get taken out after they throw a ball that goes over the outfield wall.

I should know the answer to this but I don’t….so if someone is suspended while on the IL – can time they spend on the IL also count toward suspension time?

Anyone watching the dodgers could see he wasn’t right. I don’t think he’s thrown a dozen fastballs for strikes all season combined

He only had the breaking ball and even that was suspect on finding the zone. But I guess everyone here just thinks Kelly was throwing at every team and every player he faced this entire season
