Rays Place Nick Anderson On Injured List With Forearm Inflammation

By Anthony Franco | August 23, 2020 at 10:48am CDT

10:48 am: Both Anderson and manager Kevin Cash downplayed the severity of the injury this morning (via Topkin). The hurler says he’s 99.0% certain it isn’t major, while Cash said initial evaluations were “very encouraging,” so the club doesn’t anticipate a long-term absence.

9:45 am: Elite Rays reliever Nick Anderson is headed to the 10-day injured list with inflammation in his right (throwing) forearm, per Juan Toribio of MLB.com (Twitter link). Fellow reliever Edgar García, acquired this week from the Phillies, has been recalled to replace Anderson on the active roster, adds Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). Anderson’s IL placement is retroactive to August 20.

The late-blooming Anderson may not be a household name, but he’s emerged as one of the sport’s top late-inning arms over the past two years. As a 29-year-old rookie, he shined with the Marlins, prompting the Rays to send top prospect Jesús Sánchez and reliever Ryne Stanek to Miami for Anderson and right-hander Trevor Richards. Since the trade, he’s doubled down on that initial success.

Now 30, Anderson is off to one of the best starts to this season among relievers. In 9.1 scoreless innings across eleven games, he’s struck out fifteen against just one walk. That lowered his career ERA to 2.91 in 74.1 innings, with a sparkling 2.09 FIP backing up that stout run prevention.

Needless to say, an extended absence for their top reliever would be a big blow to a Rays’ staff that just lost starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos to Tommy John surgery. Forearm injuries can sometimes portend elbow surgery for pitchers, but there’s no indication a surgical procedure is under consideration in Anderson’s case. Tampa has not provided a timetable for his return.

Can we insert the Yankees fans who cry and make excuses about injuries? Don’t act like the rays don’t have the same problem

The Yankees are the only team with injury concerns lol. Yanks4life was whining about not being at “full strength” when we’ve pummeled them this season. How many pitchers are we down now? 10???

@StPeteStingRays- Devil Rays or Sting Rays all the same to me. No difference. Are you guys going to acquire Michael Lance Lynn by the deadline? If It wouldn’t sting your team. Probably a good idea. Just don’t want him here in NY.

You’d probably need to ask the GM that question. I’d say the chances are greater that we promote from our stacked farm system, but you never know

Everyone gets injuries, but hard to compare losing LeMaihue, Judge, Stanton and Torres to anything the Rays have experienced. Not even mentioning losing Severino, Kahnle, Britton and Paxton.

@dougsolo1- of course but the Yankees have lost more players then anyone in the league. You just said the proof right there.

The AL East may be won by attrition this year. Anderson’s loss (for whatever time) is HUGE, as impactful as the Yanks losing Stanton. (I wouldn’t put it in the Judge category, but it’s not far off).

Depth is the name of this season’s game. Fortunately for Tampa Bay, we have a great , deep farm system. We should be ok…for now.

If the Indians pick up some offense at the trade deadline, they will be hard to beat with that pitching staff. Might be a good landing spot for JDM.

The Indians will likely pick up some help, but I doubt that it would be JDM. They already have a DH and they are not going to want that contract for the next two years.

Realistically idk if they will make an offensive upgrade. I hope they do. But Terry loves Naquin, DeShields has done better than expected, so that leave improving Domingo Santana. They seem to like Domingo, they will not take an offensive upgrade at catcher because of Pérez’s value with the staff. The best solution is simply Lindor, Carlos Santana and Ramírez get out of their slump. Don’t get me wrong, I personally would love an upgrade on both corner outfield spots, I just don’t think they will.

I would love for a deal with Baltimore for Santander or Detroit for Jones. But I don’t see either happening.

@Dorothy_Mantooth- how much is it going to cost as far as prospects for JDM to Cleveland? Zach Plesac+ then their going to have to pay him? Not seeing that happening. They won’t even extend JRAM & Frankie keeping them in Cleveland.

Yanks4 life continues to show that he is all mouth and no knowledge. First bit of information for him is that Jose Ramirez currently is playing on a 5 year contract extension buying out some free agent years. He is controlled for three more years. They attempted, but were not able to get Lindor to sign an extension. Second, Plesac has more trade value than JD Martinez due to his contract and opt outs in it. No one is going to give up value like a controllable starter like Plesac for any player that has an opt out at the end of his season. He could have found out that information if he took 5 minutes to research, but he is not willing to read and learn. Just stop while you are behind.

Yank4life is like the middle school bully. He is all mouth and bravado, yet he can not back up his words. I trust the Indian front office. Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff provided a constant, contending, talented team on half the budget of the Yankees. Yanks4life should realize that big market teams like the Dodgers and Yankees have many more revenue streams to tap into. Small market teams do not have the resources to make up for major mistakes such as a Jacoby Ellsbury. A mistake that size would hamper a small market team for years. But of course, he only looks at everything through his big market glasses. .So, Yank4life, take some time to study and learn how life works on the small market side of the street. If you spend an hour or two and seriously study, you would see how many advantages big market teams have. You would also learn how well operated teams like the Indians, A’s, and Rays are to be constantly in contention despite their financial constraints. I challenge you to be a more educated baseball fan. Will you do the work, or just continue to spew your nonsense.

Have a safe and happy Sunday and week.

The Indians arent taking Jdm’s 2/40 after this year no way no how
( not that its attrocious but thats not there MO)

More a chance they call SF about an Alex Dickerson or possibly Schoop for a utility from Det-

Cle is a lot better off in-house than about 90% of the posters here realize and they have a top 5 FO currently that most people still view as “just cheap” and just cant move on –

They control the hill really with all that pitching but I dont see them dealing that this year due to odd circumstances – I think they stay very low key, take on little money, and be happy with the arms they got heading into the short playoff series in October

They’ll make 1-2 very small moves in the next week I do imagine though; This could be thier best shot in a while have to do something small

I do think they trade Clevi this offseason an get back a nice haul
