Reds Designate Cody Reed

By Connor Byrne | August 24, 2020 at 4:32pm CDT

The Reds have designated left-hander Cody Reed for assignment, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer was among those to report. The club reinstated righty Robert Stephenson in a corresponding move.

Reed, now 27, joined the Reds in the team’s 2015 trade with the Royals centering on righty Johnny Cueto. Reed debuted in the majors the next season, but he didn’t begin truly making his mark in the bigs until 2018. Between then and last season, Reed tossed 49 1/3 innings of 3.65 ERA/3.59 FIP ball with 8.94 K/9, 2.92 BB/9 and an exemplary 63.2 percent groundball rate. Reed wasn’t able to carry that success into this season, though, as he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and eight walks (10 strikeouts) in 9 1/3 frames before the Reds jettisoned him. They’ll have a week to trade, release or send Reed through waivers, though he’s out of minor league options.

Stephenson, 27, made his sole appearance of the year July 25 before landing on the IL with a back injury. He was a key part of the Reds’ bullpen last year, when he amassed 64 2/3 frames of 3.76 ERA/3.63 FIP ball with 11.27 K/9 and 3.34 BB/9.

Because so many people are not good enough to play at the highest level of the game.

That’s a relief that none of the guys we gave up for Cueto panned out.

And here I figured the World Series title was relief enough.

That’s not to mention, one being glad someone’s career didn’t pan out.

I mean is it not better to hope they turn out? Seems kind of odd to root against guys that you would’ve followed in the minors.

He seems like the type that roots for laundry instead of the people occupying them. I am as well with the Rockies, but I don’t think to that extent. I only actively root against guys that leave on bad terms or badmouth the organization afterward. I never root against former Rockies that leave on good terms unless they are on a division rival.

The fact that he throws left handed gives him a pretty good chance at finding another job. Throw strikes, kid.

About anybody else on the roster. Votto is a slow, poor base running, aging, platoon player at best at this stage of his career. Bell is wasting an AB at the top half of the order every time he does this. If Votto gets on he does nothing to help in running the bases and pressuring the defense.

This isn’t hard to understand when you get the fan boy out of the way.

Agreed. Let’s have the hard look in the mirror and acknowledge that he’s a sub-replacement level player. Bat him seventh in the lineup, with the other low-BA, low-SLugging hitters.

    Hopefully related to Jody Reed.

Posted 5 years ago on multiple sites that Cody would probably not make it. He throws off a peg leg much of the time. That never works for locating pitches well and is easier for hitters to spot the point of release of the hand/ball..
