Blue Jays Place Rowdy Tellez On 10-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | September 9, 2020 at 4:39pm CDT

4:39pm: The Blue Jays have placed Tellez on the IL and recalled outfielder Billy McKinney, per Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.

3:28pm: The Blue Jays are likely to place first baseman/designated hitter Rowdy Tellez on the 10-day injured list with a right knee strain, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star tweets.

At 24-18 and in possession of an American League playoff spot, Toronto has been one of the game’s pleasant surprises this year. The 25-year-old Tellez has been among the reasons the Blue Jays have jumped out to such a quality record and have scored the majors’ ninth-most runs (210). Tellez has slashed an excellent .283/.347/.540 with eight home runs in 127 plate appearances in 2020. Of course, with such a small amount of time left in the regular season, it’s unknown if Tellez will be able to return in the coming weeks. For now, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Travis Shaw will take up the lion’s share of playing time at first base.

Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, this is the second major injury their offense has dealt with this week. They previously lost outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, who has been an elite hitter this season, to a left oblique strain. Nevertheless, the Jays will go for a sweep against the division-rival Yankees on Wednesday.

They’ll probably re-sign Smoak soon since he’s getting released.

By the Giants? They just signed him to a minor league deal.

Yankees are in a world of trouble if they can’t beat Toronto’s C-minus lineup tonight.

Too bad for Tellez. Just when the organization was starting to trust him he gets hurt. I hope he keeps getting better and proves everyone wrong.

imagine we could see Bo up Friday and Dhing on the weekend to buy him some extra rest time. no need to rush him in the field with Panik and Shaw hitting well of late

Bo might get in the lineup but this Nintendo manager will probably try moving him around so he can make sure people talk about how many different lineups Charlie used this year. Oh I pray they get rid of the worst manger in pro sports after this season.

I believe they are purposely trying to sabotage Vlad Jr. so they have an excuse to trade him because he was an AA signing and we all know Atkins hates that held over his head. Many people are tuning in to see Vlad Jr play NOT sit on the bench half the time.

Why would the Blue Jays trade him?

They won’t, but if they did it would be because he has a ton of value (still), he’s overweight at 20-21 years old and has eaten his way out of playing SS, 3B, OF and is just adequate at 1B.

        Again, they aren’t trading him.

” but you can’t win them all’ i was wondering who might use those infamous last words lol.
When you have our closest rival on the ropes you do not pull this new age Analytics driven cow dung of a game. Note to the High performance/analytics Depts.
This one game had a 2 games swing. Rather then be 4 up – we are now 2.
I’m planting the blame for this one squarely on the shoulders of ” Bob” .
Who is Bob you ask? He’s the 20 something statistical analysist who pushed print on this genius of a computer generated game plan.
1-With 3 of our top 5 hitters out of action- you do not sit our # 4 Hitter with a game off coming tomorrow. The AL player of the week can get a days rest on our off day . ( please double check spreadsheet next time genius boy)
2-Anyone with 1/4 of a human brain would know pitching any of Roark/Anderson/Stripling/Ray in sequence was a recipe to be down 5-7 runs within 6 innings. Roark/Hatch/Pen made more sense and a better chance to get the sweep.
3- Isn’t Borucki a starter in his previous life? Last appearance .1 IP. this one .2 IP.- 1 full innings pitched in 2 appearances does not a rested Pen make.
Really making good use of Bull Pen – chuckles.
But hey maybe it’s Bob calling the shots on the Bull pen as well/
There is exactly one good thing came out of this game.( Mind a game against the team you are in a race with doesn’t make the most sense to do it. ) The Bull pen got some much needed rest.
Anyone care to explain/justify any of the above? A statement from ” Bob” most welcome of all.

A lot to unpack here Marko

-Why was Roark pulled after 68 pitches?
-Will those propping up Stripling come out of hiding yet?
-Villar cannot handle SS and his throwing is a big problem. Oh look, another error. Can those who said Villar would be a great addition please come out of hiding.
      – Because of the bullpen use, they had to go to Stripling (kinda). Still, why wasn’t Roark brought back for the 5th?
-Lineup was garbage last night yet they got unlikely production from Fisher. They were asking for a loss last night.

This is a pennant race. All hands on-deck. With added injuries now is not the time to start sitting guys. No reason Gurriel couldn’t DH and Vlad play 1B. Would that have made a difference? Probably not. But let’s pretend to care about winning here, Blue Jays. This is ridiculous.
