Diamondbacks Activate Madison Bumgarner From 10-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | September 5, 2020 at 7:30pm CDT

SEPTEMBER 5: Bumgarner has been activated and infielder Andy Young was optioned to the team’s alternate training site, the Diamondbacks announced.

SEPTEMBER 2: Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced that left-hander Madison Bumgarner will return from the injured list Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com was among those to report.

Bumgarner, who has been out since Aug. 10 with a mid-back strain, will start against the Giants this weekend. The 31-year-old had an incredible run in San Francisco from 2009-19, when he registered a 3.13 ERA across 1,846 regular-season innings, made four All-Star teams and emerged as one of the greatest postseason performers in the history of the game. Thanks in no small part to Bumgarner, the Giants won three World Series when he was part of their organization.

Despite his overall brilliance as a Giant, they let him walk in free agency last offseason in favor of receiving draft-pick compensation via the qualifying offer. The division-rival Diamondbacks then swooped in with a five-year, $85MM guarantee, but the gamble hasn’t gone according to plan so far. Before going on the IL, Bumgarner made four starts and posted a hideous 9.35 ERA/8.60 FIP over 17 1/3 innings, during which he recorded career worsts in K/9 (6.75), BB/9 (3.63), groundball rate (23.7 percent) and average fastball velocity (87.8 mph).

The Bumgarner signing was among the reasons Arizona was a popular pick to vie for a playoff spot this season, but the team has instead crashed to a 14-22 record past the halfway point. While a postseason spot now looks out of the question, seeing Bumgarner end the year on a positive note – if he’s able to – would at least give the Diamondbacks some peace of mind heading into the winter. Conversely, should Bumgarner’s woes continue this month, it would be another negative for the D-backs entering the offseason.

We can only hope he improves and dump his contract somewhere and somehow. Man, 2020 has been nasty for the Dbacks. Utter failure of a season.

Why? The guy is significantly better than bum is right now with that contract.

IMO Stanton’s contract is a lot worse than Bum’s at this point. Stanton will likely outperform Madison but he’ll also likely way underperform his contract (largely due to injuries). He’ll make something around 210+ million over the next 7 years while Bumgarner will make 79 over the next 4. If my team had to be saddled with one of those two I would pick Bumgarner

I thought sure that Preller was going to throw a ton of money at this guy and make him a Padre. Sooo glad that didn’t happen.

What a steep decline he has gone through, starting with the dirt bike fiasco, then getting hit on hand in a come backer. Traveled to SF several times during the 2010-2114 seasons, and was fortunate to see him pitch during his and the Giants hey day. What a competitor both on the mound and at the plate. Shame he couldn’t ever get back to that level.

I doubt he cares with those 3 WS rings he won with the Giants. Got payed his money and is a future hall of famer.

He’s close to the HOF now, but I think he still needs two or three decent seasons.

Postseason stats and WS championships should be enough to get him in.

I mean, if his career were to end today, would he eventually get in? I’d say so, obviously his postseason resume is one of the best of all time for a pitcher, and he has solid regular season numbers. At this point he just needs to rack up more regular season stats.

If he were put in the HOF right now, his 36.2 career WAR would put him 72nd all-time out of 82 HOF pitchers. Four of those beneath him were relievers, plus Ruth and Paige, so really he’d have the fifth lowest WAR all-time for a HOF starting pitcher. Not good.

Obviously WAR isn’t the be all end all for HOF determination, and like I said I think if his career ended right now he’d eventually get in due to his postseason resume, but it would take multiple votes.

Correct, should be in the league for another 5 years and should bring that WAR up a bit more.

Why do the Diamondbacks shift so much between building, contending and rebuilding? I almost forgot that the team selling everyone they possibly could at the deadline just signed Mad Bum to a huge deal.

That’s why they are inconsistent year to year. They should stick with a plan. The Giants on the other hand never sell which is why they are bad or stuck in the middle thinking they are better than they are.

Giants last made the playoffs in 2016 and their rebuild technically started with the selection of Joey Bart in 2018, and their farm system is currently ranked 10th in all of baseball. So they really only “refused” to sell one year, which was 2017. And for those who say they didn’t sell last year, they traded off Melancon, Dyson, and Pomeranz for Jaylin Davis, Mauricio Dubon, and several solid depth prospects. The picks they got from MadBum and Smith actually helped them a lot in this years draft as it was only 5 rounds and they had more picks than any other team.

Giants farm system ranked 10th ?? Are you drunk or stupid. They’ve improved but not even close to braking the top 10
You need to post links to prove such a ridiculous statement. The scouting organizational rankings by reputable sites have the Giants at 14th out of 3rd which is considered average. Nothing fancy. Here are the facts :

          Baseball America #14
          Fangraphs #14
          MLB Scouting Bureau # 14

These rankings were last updated August 2020

And if Bart continues to struggle at the plate and on defense , that 14th ranking will drop considering Bart was their highest ranked prospect

The Giants rebuild didn’t begin until they Hired Farhan Zaidi. And even then, he didn’t do much or wasn’t allowed to do much last year because the organization didn’t want a fie sale in Bochys last year.

Top 10 farm system.LOL….Who told you that? 27 Rings is correct. Giants farm system is ranked 14th /15th by Top scouting services. The Giants are years. away from a Top 5, Top 10 system.

Joey Bart? Is he gonna be a Bust? The swing is long and he looks like he can’t hit big league breaking balls . The Defense is mediocre

I guess you must be constipated again. MLB has them at #10. That is up from #29 just 2 years. They would probably be higher, but their farm system players are really young. Joey Bart is not struggling at the plate. I know you don’t get MLB games in Russia.

Giants were ranked 10th in the beginning of the season, they fell to the 13th according to MLB midseason report after the draft because they didn’t pick any high school prep arms like Abel who is currently ranked 94th after Clarke Schmidt at 95th. But, go on about your knowledge. Your team is ranked higher than the Giants. How is Gary Sánchez doing by the way??
