Indians Select Kyle Nelson’s Contract, Option Adam Cimber

By Mark Polishuk | September 9, 2020 at 2:36pm CDT

2:36PM: Jefry Rodriguez has been placed on the 45-day injured list with a right shoulder strain, which opens a 40-man spot for Nelson.  Rodriguez was on Cleveland’s 60-man player pool but his season will end without any big league action.  The 27-year-old Rodriguez posted a 5.20 ERA over 98 2/3 innings for the Nationals and Indians in 2018-19.

2:10PM: The Indians have selected the contract of left-hander Kyle Nelson from their alternate training site, the club announced.  Right-hander Adam Cimber was optioned to the alternate training site in a corresponding move, and another move will need to be made to create space for Nelson on the 40-man roster.

A 15th-round pick for Cleveland in the 2017 draft, the 24-year-old Nelson is on track to make his MLB debut after posting some very impressive numbers in the Tribe’s farm system.  Nelson has a 2.07 ERA, 5.68 K/BB rate, and 13.0 K/9 over 122 career minor league innings, working as a reliever for 95 of his 96 games.  Known for his outstanding slider, Nelson will add some left-handed depth to a Cleveland bullpen that has only two southpaws in its ranks — closer Brad Hand and veteran Oliver Perez.

Cimber pitched on both Monday and Tuesday, allowing three runs over a combined two-thirds of an inning of work.  His demotion could simply to be to give him a bit of a breather and to allow the Tribe to get a fresher arm into the mix, as Cimber had been pitching quite well prior to those last two outings.  The righty had a 1.80 ERA over his first 10 innings of the 2020 season, albeit with only five strikeouts, which represents a concerning lack of missed bats even though Cimber is a grounder specialist.

Cimber has never really put it together and every outing is a nail biter. They should DFA Sandy Leon as well, they could pitch and catch in the Alternate Site.

cimber has always been iffy. he’s proven this season he’s not cut out for the 3 batter rule.

Comber is a worker. He showed up to the padres camp and a non invite and told he would make the team. They gave him things to work on and he did that. The rest is history

That’s great, he’s a worker and nobody here dislikes him just pointing out he’s erratic and can’t be trusted in anything other than mop up duty. A sidearmer relies on deception and he doesn’t have any, it’s like live BP up there.

It’s great that he’s a worker, nobody here disputing that and everyone I know pulling for him. But he’s unreliable in anything other than mop up duty. When you’re a sidearmer you thrive on deception and with him there is none, instead it’s like live BP up there.

Yea, I was surprised when they sent cam hill down instead of Cimber earlier.

Hill had options or else it would’ve been Leone, if only Leon went instead. They don’t need 3 catchers at the moment, especially when a 3rd is a short drive away from the alternate site.

I know that Leone is out of options and that’s why he’s been kept, but I don’t see what’s worth keeping him either. His strikeout numbers have been great, but he’s been way too hittable and hasn’t had great control. He’d presumably clear waivers anyway.

Cam Hill should still be in the bullpen right now. But I’ve been looking forward to seeing Kyle Nelson, and I think Robert Broom will be in their bullpen at some point next year too.

Bingo! His poor defense last night cost them bigtime. When you’re a Punch & Judy hitter you better bring the glove and feet.

I don’t understand why he was in the game to start with. Mercado just had a couple of good games, why not let him build on that momentum?

Cimber was a go-to guy last season in high-leverage situations and he was killer to right handed batters. 2020 has not been kind to Cimber.. the Indians were clearly avoiding putting him in during close games and righties mashed him.

Hopefully he just needs a little time to regain his form.

Like a lot of specialists, the three batter minimum hasn’t been kind to Cimber

Which as a rule is a dumb one. If you want to waste a precious roster slot on a guy to throw to just 1 or 2 hitters why not?

Perez and karinchak have been the Indians two best bullpen arms! While the rest are inconsistent to say the least

And lately Karinchak has been off, hoping he gets it worked out right as we near the playoffs.

I believe as long as the rest of the regular season plays out he’ll be back for Spring Training.

      News:
“CLEVELAND, Ohio — MLB is scheduled to play a 60-game season starting on July 23 or 24. Indians right-hander Emmanuel Clase was suspended in spring training for 80 games for using a performance enhancing drug.

If the 60-game season for 2020 is played to its entirety, according to an agreement between MLB and MLBPA, there will be no carryover to the 2021 season in Clase’s suspension. If the 2020 season is interrupted or canceled by the coronavirus, more negotiations would probably be needed to determine an outcome.”
