Latest On Tommy Lasorda

By Connor Byrne | December 20, 2020 at 12:53pm CDT

DECEMBER 20: Fortunately, Lasorda’s condition has improved over the past few weeks, relays Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). He was transferred out of the intensive care unit late last month and hopes to be released from the hospital on Wednesday.

NOVEMBER 16: Legendary Dodger Tommy Lasorda was hospitalized and admitted to intensive care Sunday in Orange County, Calif., the team announced. Lasorda is “resting comfortably,” according to the Dodgers, though his family has requested privacy.

The 93-year-old Lasorda is among the most recognizable and accomplished figures in the Dodgers’ storied history. He began as a minor league pitcher for the franchise in 1949, when it was still in Brooklyn, and saw major league action with the Dodgers from 1954-55. Lasorda’s last MLB season was in 1956 with the Kansas City Athletics.

Once his playing career ended, Lasorda went into scouting and coaching in the early 1960s with the Dodgers – which proved to be a wise move. In 1976, he became the Dodgers’ manager and held that position for two decades. The Dodgers went 1,599-1,439 under Lasorda during the regular season, won eight division titles, took home four NL pennants and earned two World Series championships. Lasorda won Manager of the Year honors twice during his run atop the Los Angeles dugout, and the Dodgers later retired his No. 2.

Lasorda, who ranks 22nd all-time in managerial wins, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. He has continued to work with the Dodgers as a special advisor since his managerial tenure ended.  We at MLBTR wish Lasorda a speedy recovery and hope to see him back with the Dodgers soon.

It’s sad but the man is NINTY THREE years old! Not 23. He isn’t immortal ppl. Btw lasorda is from the same town as me, and everyone dislikes him locally. Same with his PED buddy Piazza. Everyone locally knows piazza juiced and the reason he didn’t get caught was because it would of tainted Tommy’s career. FACTS

Any word on WHY he was hospitalized? Covid?

Heart problems for decades. Several of them. Since last century, in fact. He had a heart attack in 1996 that prompted his retirement, and was quite obese. Don’t think anybody imagined him making it this far. Hopefully he’s got a few more astonishingly unexpected years in him.

That’s why it’s amazing he’s still with us at 93. Did not exactly take care of himself, very overweight for a long period, heart attack nearly a quarter of a century ago, ongoing heart issues. People generally don’t make it to 93 with that medical profile. Hopefully he keeps beating the odds and gets to celebrate his 100th.

Tommy is from another generation of larger than life managers. Draw a line straight through baseball history from John McGraw to Leo Durocher to Casey Stengel and Sparky Anderson. Tommy is the last of them. The game has changed so much since their day. No place in it anymore for huge personalities like theirs.

I am lucky, my sister is an associate athletic director at Nevada, and a local dealership hosts a baseball event for the college team, the Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner. Dolan was in the Dodgers organization, so they usually try for Dodger players and personalities. Last year it was Nomar, and I’ve met Dave Roberts and Tommy Lasorda at earlier ones. My sister gets tickets every year, and the food is good and I usually get to meet a Dodger.

The event with Tommy as the speaker was the best one thus far. Great talk, Tommy has such an outsized personality. And there’s no bigger fan or ambassador for Dodger Blue than Tommy Lasorda.

Do not lean on your own understanding@, The world sends thoughts to the universal god of their minds. That God then sends positive General energy out in a general sense everywhere and hopefully some of it latches to Tommy and reinvigorates and heals him.

This energy is available to all who desire it and can Channel it through meditation and other things. Christians go to Jesus.

Phenomenal ambassador for the game. As recently as 2 years ago he had a table outside of the Dodgers Spring Training stadium where he signed and took pictures with fans.

He looked pretty rough last time I saw him up close, at the Dodgers/Angels game in 2019.

He is at virtually every home game, in his seat next to the Dodgers dugout, pretty much right below our seats. You’d never see any of the owners there, but Tommy, almost always. At one playoff game not very long ago he ran up and down the aisle waving a Dodgers banner. Got the crowded fired up. Nobody like him in baseball.

Get better, Tommy. We need to see you in your seat again, right where you belong in your Blue Heaven on Earth!

That’s cool. This was at the Big A. He had a table behind home plate in the diamond club area. Everyone smiled and waved to him.

He pitched for the LA Angels before Brooklyn moved here. Most people don’t know that, but he’s truly a piece of SoCal baseball history as well as Dodgers history. Unfortunately MLB wants to pretend there wasn’t already good baseball before they moved here.

And the Hollywood Stars, Their stadium was on Fairfax, next to Farmers Market. Tommy’s home is actually a lot closer to Anaheim than LA. He’s lived in the same tract house in Fullerton since the 1950s. Probably you knew that already. When the Dodgers created “Lasorda’s Trattoria” on the right field side a few years back he’d show up at one of the outdoor tables sometimes. Was never there for it myself but I heard.

So we should be tolerant of bigots? Tolerance does not include tolerance of hate. That’s the way that works.

Why are you replying to me? I didn’t say anything about tolerance or his son.

I don’t understand and if the format is messed up than you can have a pass but if you are that moronic Or picking an argument for no reason then here you go…

Shut your damn mouth about rights and politics this is a sports site. It’s idiots like you who drag politics and “being right” into sports, which it has no place.

I watch sports to get away from ppl who think they are the righteous ones because they stand for “tolerance” when they are in fact the least tolerant if you hold a view different than theirs.

          Have a good day

So because you are the one who decides what’s hate and what’s not?

Sounds like if you hold a view different than mine than that’s hate. That’s elementary. And I support your right to think whatever you want even though you clearly don’t feel that way about others

Grew up watching him on This Week in Baseball on Saturdays, probably in the Late 70s or early 80s…..he was like a wizard on the show or something.

Lasorda was a jerk and helmed some of the worst dodgers teams in history. Theres very few people i completely hate in this world and one of them is Tommy Lasorda. Not only is he abrasive, he’s homophobic and I have zero sympathy for bigots.

The only think Lasorda brought to baseball was his terrible personality and anger issues.
