AL East Notes: Benintendi, Kluber, Rays

By Mark Polishuk | January 17, 2021 at 6:37pm CDT

Despite all of the trade speculation swirling around Andrew Benintendi, the Red Sox haven’t “reached a point of no return in trade talks,” The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier writes, and “there’s a solid chance, though not a guarantee” that Benintendi won’t be moved.  One of the obstacles preventing a deal is the number of quality left field options remaining in free agency, so a team in need at the position might prefer to just sign a longer-term answer, rather than swing a trade with the Sox for a player who is only under team control for two more seasons.  Speier notes that the Red Sox themselves could be such a team looking for a longer-term outfielder, and could explore the free agent market themselves if Benintendi is indeed dealt.

More from around the AL East…

  • Since over half the league sent scouts to watch Corey Kluber’s showcase event, it isn’t surprising that there was some significant money on offer for the veteran righty, who ended up signing with the Yankees on a one-year, $11MM deal.  Several teams made eight-figure offers, according to SNY.tv’s Andy Martino, and the Yankees’ offer wasn’t the most expensive contract on the table.
  • Kluber drew plenty of interest from elsewhere in the AL East, as Martino writes that the Blue Jays were one of the clubs “bidding aggressively.”  Speier sheds a bit more light on Kluber’s situation, noting that he “seemed most interested in a clean one-year deal” rather than a one-year contract with a 2022 option attached — a structure that would have perhaps been more appealing to the Red Sox, another team with legitimate interest in Kluber’s services.
  • The Rays also “made a very strong run” at Kluber, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.  With Kluber now off the board, Chris Archer is still under consideration as the Rays continue to look for veteran rotation help.
  • Also from Topkin, he provides health updates on Yonny Chirinos (Tommy John surgery) and Brendan McKay (shoulder surgery).  Chirinos has started to play catch, despite only undergoing his TJ procedure back in August.  While the early progress is a good sign, it would still be a surprise if Chirinos was able to pitch at all in 2021 given the usual timeline for Tommy John recovery.  McKay’s timeline isn’t as clear, as it was estimated last August that his labrum issue would keep him sidelined through at least the start of the spring.  However, Topkin reports that McKay is expected to “soon” start playing catch, which could give both the star prospect and the Rays a better idea of when McKay will be ready for the 2021 season.

MLB Trade Rumors accurately reported what another source attributed to a “rival executive”:

“JANUARY 12, 7:23pm: A rival executive told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com that he will be “shocked” if the Red Sox don’t trade Benintendi before the end of the weekend.”

Whatever is being reported, he is coming off a season where he was hurt and hit .105, and he was not great in 2019. It is not surprising that he does not have the trade value or number of interested teams there would have been 3 years ago. He is a gamble for any team that wants him, whatever upside he has. I don’t see prospects headed to the Red Sox for him while there are still free agent outfielders for teams to sign that don’t require any prospects at all, personally. He might have a lot more value mid season if he is hitting decent again, in which case would the Red Sox still want to move him? I am sure their confidence in him is not sky high, hence why they want to trade him now. They might be a lot better off keeping him, unless he truly has little value left.

I will take Archer being he’s younger. He can easily be the 2017 2018 Archer. I don’t worry about his pirate years. They had a terrible pitching coach and played 3 dhs in the field with a 2b at SS and and a lf in center.

Archer has been overrated for years. The stat-heads look at his peripheral numbers and drool but he’s never been able to put it all together and really dominate. Maybe some pitching coach will be able to unlock his potential. But, if the Rays couldn’t do it, who will.

All these new Metric were created for guys like Archer, who it is agreed has been drastically over rated for years but based on modern metrics that will always be the hope that his limited success will be behind him and that “this is the year” he really breaks out.

My guess is if Tampa signs Archer, they will get him back to being a useful pitcher- not an ace by any means, but a guy who can give you innings with an ERA around or a little below 4.

BadBenjamin Eric Cressey also works for the Yankees and Kluber has been working with him already. Yankees also have Matt Blake as their pitching coach, Blake and Kluber were together in Cleveland for 4 years. That’s 2 people in NY that Kluber likes and is already familiar with.

Yankees also offer him as good a chance as any other team can to compete for a World Series this year. Kluber knows how to pitch under pressure.

I would imagine one of the reasons why he decided to take his talents to NY is because they score runs. Orel Hershiser has stated he chose to go to the Indians in the 90’s because he knew his skills were declining and the runs they were going to score behind him was needed to prolong his successful career.

If it were a down season that was a normal season there might be more concern. But given how strange the 2020 season was many players with otherwise solid track records having a down year, particularly someone like Benny who didn’t play much at all because of injury, many teams will discount that and not think it’s indicative of any long term concerns.

I think it’s more likely when they tried discussing long term extensions last Spring he may have indicated he wasn’t all that interested in doing that. I don’t think the 2-year deal they wound up agreeing to was all the team wanted to go with.

I can see the sox winning as well. Rays have 2 starters to replace and I agree with them that they over achieved. Yankees have 1 solid starter. Now they only have to hit on 4 of their other 6 options and could always trade for someone if they fail. So far Toronto hasn’t done a ton.

Sox have 3b ss c 2 outfielders dh. Bring back Moreland. Jbj or Pederson, although I can see renfroe being decent. Cesar or wong at 2b. Couple of Felix Archer Hamels lester. Wouldn’t have to spend major money to build a winning team. Other hand, with no fans it’s a good time for a lil rebuild reload.

How can anyone see the Red Sox winning this season? Have you seen that pitching staff or the rest of the division? Come now let’s be realistic, the Sox are trying to get younger and they see this guy going in the wrong direction the last couple of seasons and want to see what they can get now in case he has another down season. You never know what some of these GMs are thinking. I could see a team like Oakland giving up a decent prospect for Benintendi. He’s cheap and under control for 2021 and 2022 and if it works out they could flip him at the 2022 deadline after getting a year plus out of him.

If it wasn’t for the Archer trade, the pirates would still have same management. So pirate fans should be happy. It shown the organization needed a complete over haul. Don’t know why anyone would offer much for Archer. Trade would have been fine if they didn’t include a top 5 prospect along with the major leaguers.

While the Archer trade may have put the old management team and coaching staff on thin ice, I think the complete collapse in almost every facet of the game in the second half of 2019 was the real reason they went complete tear down and rebuild the staff and FO.

I am sure it killed nutting to eat managements remaining salary. I think it took the pressure of fans and media to nudge NH out the door. I thought NH was doing fine. Ok maybe the astros can really tap into pitchers potential. Then the rays do it to a pitcher and goiter and it’s ok something is wrong here in pittsburgh. NH killed it in trades though, obviously excluding the Archer one.

I keep saying the bs on this site is not news until a trade is made, and all I get back is “it’s a rumor site”.

It is not a rumor if everyone is “in”on everyone, which is damn near the case. I skip the rumors (as most of them aren’t, or never come to fruition), and read the completed deals….it’s less annoying that way.

That’s how baseball works. A lot of times a team will be interested in trading for someone, but they don’t like the price it will take to get them. Since this is a site dedicated to writing about anything related to MLB, they will report on rumors.

If you dislike rumor news, I would recommend that you go to a site that just focuses on guaranteed MLB deals.

Marty’s post from above is so good it is worth repeating:

“ “Despite all of the trade speculation swirling around Andrew Benintendi, the Red Sox haven’t “reached a point of no return in trade talks,” The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier writes, and “there’s a solid chance, though not a guarantee” that Benintendi won’t be moved.”
Just an absolutely useless collection of words. Of course they haven’t reached the point of no return in trade talks yet.”

        …and the reason why:

        Benintendi OPS:

        2016 – .835
        2017 – .775
        2018 – .830
        2019 – .774

Benintendi may have not lived up to the hype some fans expect, but even in 2019, he was absolutely not a bust!

A lot of the top MLB player had a horrible 2020! Stopping and starting spring training, not enough time to prep for the year, injures, dealing with family and pandemic situations all may have contributed to a terrible 2020 for many all-stars.

Look at Benintendi’s numbers from 2019 a little closer. There is a little loss of memory on some of the people posting.
        AB – 541
        R – 72
        H – 144
        2B – 40 (pretty high # for someone who’s a bust)
        3B – 5
        HR – 13
        RBI – 68
        SB – 10
BA – .266 (low for someone with high expectations, but if it was Bradley with a .266 we would all be thrilled)
OBP – .343 (one of the better OBP in the AL)
SLG – .431 (certainly not horrible)
OPS – .774 (not elite, but not bad)

Yes, 2020 was beyond horrible, but was too and many others

It seems there are a collection of Red Sox fans that have short memories or what to change what really happened, but I guess that is similar to what is going on on a larger scale…

Cora screwed up Bennintendi by moving him into leadoff spot…. took away his aggressiveness…. he is consistently down 0-2, 1-2 in the count…..Change approach back to being aggressive and he will be fine… trading him when his value is low is just plain stupid.

Finished 2019 stronger in the 2 spot adds to your thinking there.

2020 trainwreck, they should try him in the 1 or 2 spot again, but make sure there’s an MVP type batting in whichever spot he isn’t occupying. That’d fix him.

Well if Merriam Webster’s definition of ‘rumor’ is correct, which is “statement or report current without known authority for its truth”, then “so and so is interested in so and so” without official confirmation from either side is in fact a rumor.

Most folks still think trades get made in an hour, on the ephemeral napkin at the local bar. Not the way it happens at all.

At some point, any decent GM is talking to all 30 teams, judging their willingness to move so-and-so. And answering inquiries about their players. It’s just going about their business.

Then, when you get a hot property like a Joe Musgrove, you solicit offers, and even sit on them a bit, Who knows, maybe Kershaw and Buehler develop a medical issue; that throws LA into the pot, where they may not have been interested before. After all that, you make the what you perceive to be the best deal.

And let’s face it, teams “use” the media to stay on the sports pages. It wouldn’t be any fun if your GM answered “What are your goals this offseason” with “Well, we’re probably not going to do anything”.

The point is to get the respective teams’ fans invested in the article/player and develop buy-in on the offseason topics of conversation. Think how excruciating the comments would be if we came to the message board and the December 10 trade board was up here for three weeks because there was no notable movement.

I posit fans would then be upset because writers were not informative enough on current and ongoing discussions between interested teams and players!

I’d still like to see Boston trade Benny and sign Rosario in his place. Rosario’s defense is more than acceptable, especially playing 82 games in LF at Fenway but his offense is light years ahead of Benny. Get it done, Chaim!

Rosario has a slightly worse career OPS than Benitendi, is a worse defensive player, he’s slower and is 3 years older. Call me crazy but I’d rather have Benintendi and hope for a bounce back after a lost season.

Their career OPS numbers are identical (off less than one point at 788 vs 789) but take out Rosario’s first two years in the league and he is at least 50 points higher than Benny. What this tells me is that Rosario took a couple of years to adjust to MLB pitching and then took off at the plate. Benny is the exact opposite. He took the league by storm as a rookie and has since regressed considerably as an offensive player, both from a power perspective and OPS perspective the last two seasons. Rosario has much more power (which Boston really needs in its OF) and is still only 29 years old so he has another 3+ years of above average offense left in his bat. We have no idea what is left in Benny’s bat and his sprint speed and defense has fallen off to a point where he is worse than Rosario in the OF now. To me it’s no contest. Rosario is the better player and I absolutely loved Benny when he was originally called up. Living 10 minutes from Fenway, I watch / attend over 100 Sox games per year (in a normal year) and have watched Benny regress into a lost and seeming uninterested player. For his sake, I’d love to see Benny rebound, but a rebound for him would be batting .285 with 30+ doubles and 15-20 HRs. Those are baseline numbers for Rosario. If they can get a decent pitcher for Benny they should do so and move on. Rosario does need to learn how to take a walk though. He doesn’t strike out much but he doesn’t take enough walks which hurts his OBP considerably. That’s the one area Benny has him beat.

Sure, if you take out the player’s worst career years their stats always. look better. If you remove Benintendi’s last two season he is a .818 OPS hitter and an average defender.

Rosario is just another swing and miss, low OBP, all or nothing hitter who plays bad defense. Those guys can be found any time you want them. The Red Sox themselves have a ton of these guys – Dalbec, Devers, Chavis etc.

I don’t think Benintendi is bringing back any impact pitcher at this point. Much better idea to play him this year and see if he comes back. If not, you can go get a Rosario skill set player any day of the week on waivers. All he brings to the table is decent power. Those guys are not highly sought after.

Benny was a 7th overall pick who looked like a star from 2016-2018, had a so-so 2019 and then 40 miserable AB before being injured in 2020. I don’t understand the rush to dump him when his value is at an all time low and he’s only making $6mil.

Nice to see Toronto was aggressive in the biding. However, I don’t want them to dramatically overpay for a FA just because the fanbase and whoever else is calling for it. I’m perfectly fine with some smaller moves and focusing on the trade deadline and next off season.

Aoe, I question the Jays strategy of publicly attaching themselves to every free agent. It’s frustrating fans and makes it look like they’re failing. When the offseason is done, if they end up signing one of the big free agents and one or two second tier ones, they’ll have had a good offseason, yet the memory will be about all the ones they “missed!” They really should stop leaking rumors. It’s not helping them.

An average of 107 OPS+, over 4 years, is rather “meh”, with most of it being achieved more than 2 years ago. There’s defensive value with Bene, but not remarkably so; at this point, he’s actually overpaid.

But I’m with those who say keep him; there’s still some potential there, and all you’re doing at this point is selling low.

And, as always, there might be other factors that would motivate Boston to move him; we just don’t know.

With 2021 finally here, these are some 2020 Thoughts & Observations

    1.  The dumbest thing I bought in 2020 was a planner.

    2.  I was so bored I called Jake from State Farm just to talk to someone. He asked me what I was wearing.

    3.  2019: Stay away from negative people. 2020: Stay away from positive people.

    4.  The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house and their kids are yelling at them to stay home!

    5.  This morning I saw a neighbor talking to her dog. It was obvious she thought her dog understood her. I came into my house and told my cat. We laughed a lot.

    6.  Every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pajamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom.

    7. Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands?

    8. This virus has done what no woman has been able to do. Cancel sports, shut down all bars and keep men at home!

    9. I never thought the comment, “I wouldn’t touch him/her with a 6-foot pole” would become a national policy, but here we are!

    10. I need to practice social-distancing from the refrigerator.

    11. I hope the weather is good tomorrow for my trip to the Backyard. I’m getting tired of the Living Room.

Actually, I think he’s noting the irony of 2020 down to the core. Injecting humor into incredibly stressful situations is natural and helps as a coping mechanism for human beings. To pretend otherwise is why a majority of the country is over medicated and/or under a therapist’s care.

He’s not offending anyone, just merely observing life’s irony. If we can’t do that anymore we’ve really lost.

@ theodore glass–no need for name calling here. You have the right to disagree with another persons opinion but to call names is a poor response. A lot of us use humor to cope. If one does not laugh, they cry. I would rather laugh than cry. Yes a whole lot of pain and suffering over the pandemic. Some as a direct result of the virus. Some more caused by the political response to it. Being doom and gloom 24/7 does no one any good. We are are, on this board because it is a respite from reality for a brief moment of the day. I don’t watch the news much anymore,. even local. because it is all Coronavirus all the time. After a year of it, I am done hearing about it.

An interesting tidbit in the Martino piece is that Tanaka is looking for a one year deal, 15-20m. His market is really unclear. Perhaps he will go back to Japan. Id like the yanks go over the cap by just a bit to accommodate Tanaka. The rotation could use him

That’s a lot for one year of current Tanaka. 20 million could go a long way toward another top-tier SP. I hold Tanaka in high regard and he’s one of my favorite Yankees pitchers these past few years.

Their goal is to reset the CBT for next year unless something they can’t refuse (ie, Castillo) becomes a realistic possibility.

      • LordD99

The Yankees indifference toward Tanaka could be viewed as a red flag by other teams. They better than any team know the true state of his elbow. They also are no doubt concerned about the disappearance of his splitter as an effective weapon, his signature pitch, which he hasn’t been able to command consistently since 2018. It’s been mostly MIA the last two seasons. To his credit, he’s been able to substitute his slider and remain effective. Few pitchers could lose their best pitch and remain competitive. The Yankees love this guy from a character and competitive point of view, and he’s been an above league average starter every year, yet here they are desperate for starters and they’re letting him walk. He’s still only in his early 30s. He’s a good bet to give a team 170+ innings. They just opted to replace him with Kluber, who is several years older and has barely pitched over the past two seasons. Can’t be helping his market.

This could be simply a case of money. The Yankees are focused on the luxury tax. Tanaka wants 15M+. The Yankees went with the cheaper option. The Angels should be all in here.

Sugano just got $10M in Japan. Tanaka remains a bigger star. He just might consider returning home, retool his splitter and return to the US a year on when teams’ financial situations are clearer. Might even return to the Yankees. Shouldn’t need to happen. A one year deal? Where are the Angels?!

Good take on Tanaka losing his best pitch yet still being competitive. That is a mark of being a very good or great pitcher/player. Improvise and adapt and not miss much in the results. Average to even good pitchers can’t make up for losing their best tool. Hats off to Tanaka.

I’m curious if the Yankees called Tanaka’s agent and offered them the Kluber deal before signing the Kluber deal. If so, it would confirm this is strictly a money/luxury tax decision.

They might have thought they could have signed him cheaper and simply got out bid. 13 million for him doesn’t sound bad though. But he could have trouble staying healthy.

He can easily be replaced. Lots of cheap options on the free agent market that the rays could get max results out of. I dunno about the reds but the pirates are certainly selling some good pitchers. There isn’t much incentive to win the division so they just need to hang around and can always make a trade this summer.

I know Chaim Bloom has been bargain hunting this far in the off-season by making millions of the Red Sox Nation very frustrated but he can redeem himself by signing either Joc Pederson or Marcell Ozuna.. Then sign Brad Hand & Alex Colomé then finally sign Masahiro Tanaka or if they are trading Benintendi center a package around him for the Oakland A’s A.J. Puk.. Puk has 6 year’s of control left & he’s already been compared to a young Randy Johnson.. The Redsox could definitely put a package together to acquire A.J. Puk !!!
