3:47 pm: The team is hopeful Lynn will only need to miss one start, per Fegan (via Twitter).
3:24 pm: The White Sox are placing right-hander Lance Lynn on the injured list with a strained right trapezius muscle, retroactive to April 17, James Fegan of the Athletic was among those to relay (Twitter link). Reliever Zack Burdi is being recalled from the alternate training site in a corresponding move.
Chicago acquired Lynn from the Rangers over the winter in one of the biggest offseason moves for any team. The 33-year-old (34 next month) has given the Sox everything they could’ve asked for over his first three starts, tossing 19.2 innings of 0.92 ERA/2.36 SIERA ball, striking out 27 against only two walks. The White Sox didn’t announce a timetable for his potential return.
With Lynn sidelined, Chicago figures to lean on a rotation of Lucas Giolito, Dallas Keuchel, Dylan Cease, Michael Kopech and Carlos Rodón. Kopech is slated to start this evening’s game against the Red Sox.

Ugh, the White Sox are gonna have to freelance their way out of this one.
Rsk3228
Yea, they gotta lynn-it to win it.
BeeVeeTee
The ten day injured list is probably the best for pitchers. It was created for pitchers to miss a start or two when they start feeling a little strains rather than have them get cortisone shots.
1984wasntamanual
Yup, or just give them a break here and there to ease back into a full season of innings. I don’t know about Lynn specifically, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these pitchers that are hitting the 10 day DL are fine
BeeVeeTee
The ten day disabled list was created in this current collective bargaining agreement. Prior to this ten day disabled list a lot of pitchers were getting cortisone shots to last through the entire season. This prevents major injuries to pitchers along with them not doping to get that advantage. We will see a lot of pitchers going on the ten day disabled list this season especially the guys who are over 30 years old with mileage on their arm.

Keuchel was claiming bad luck, for his less than stellar performances this year. Insinuated that Kiki was just lucky on the HR that Kiki hit off him today.
Seemed to me that if anyone was ‘lucky’, it was Keuchel. Despite Sox TV announcers crying about every borderline pitch not going their way, Keuchel got a lot of calls later in the game that he shouldn’t have gotten.
For as shaky as Keuchel has been, seems he’s sure does have a unrealistic opinion of how well he’s throwing right now. He’s an overpaid, 4th starter at this time. Rodon is throwing a lot better.
whosyourmomma
Keuchel had bad defense behind him, some missed pitches by ump and Kiki’s home run was to opposite field and literally was like 304 feet so yes that’s extremely unlucky for any pitcher. But thanks for the expert analysis & opinion. Lol
BeeVeeTee
Keuchel’s best days are behind him and the White Sox are well of that. Keuchel’s veteran presence is crucial for this young White Sox’s pitching staff. Plus, the White Sox may have overpaid for Keuchel but the contract they gave is not bad either. The White Sox signed to his current deal with the fourth year option coming in with how many innings Keuchel can pitch next season where it’s on him to stay healthy since he does have a history of injuries. However, we might see shades of the former Keuchel once in awhile.
Sliderdownandin
I think the Kuechel signing was more of a medium reward / low risk signing, designed to provide stability and consistency to a young staff.
I don’t think they were expecting a CubYoung caliber player, but someone who is dependable and will give you innings of decent performance.
Last season was a bonus. While this year has not been good, it has not been terrible either.

White Sox fans (both of them) and their announcers whine at every opportunity. I used to love listening to Stone in the booth–now he is another insufferable homer. But anything is better than hawk harrelson. Worst.announcer.ever. … for any sport.
Dogbone
Their fans don’t bother me. But Your right about Harrellson. But I thought it would improve a whole bunch with Hawk leaving – but it’s not much better. Stone is, as full of himself as anyone. And this new boy wonder – Benetti, just feeds into it.
Listening to the two of them, you’d think the Sox were the 27 Yankees. Their defense has been bad, real bad – but if you heard Stone, he has them all being gold glovers.
IronBallsMcGinty
Announcers are supposed to be enthusiastic and keep viewers/listeners engaged and interested. I feel they do a fine job together and I enjoy their banter.
I can’t understand why you put so much energy in hating this team but hey, you do you. Personally, I think you need more love in your life, Dogbone. I wish I was there to give you a big warm hug.
Dogbone
Sounds like you just enjoy living in the make-believe world that Stone and boy wonder, fool you into thinking, is real. I don’t hate the team nor their fans – but I have no use for the shills that try to falsely promote this organization. It has been the organization’s MO, for far too long. That, and ripping off the tax payers of Ill, Fla, and AZ.
socalsoxfan78
The expected batting average on Kiki’s home run was .071.
How is that not bad luck for Keuchel?

Kopech tonight!
Deadguy
Man Lynn was off to one of the best starts he’s had in his career. Hope he heals and gets back to striking out wimpy batters soon
Prunella Vulgaris
Well, this sucks.
Aaron Sapoznik
Michael Kopech might be starting the second game of today’s doubleheader but it will be more as an opener since he isn’t sufficiently stretched out to pitch more than 3 innings, something manager Tony La Russa is hoping to get from him this evening. I’d guess that Garret Crochet will then picky-back with Kopech whenever he is relieved.
Hopefully Lance Lynn will be out for the minimum amount of time on the IL. The White Sox do have a scheduled off day this Thursday and another the following Monday. They will also be facing some very inclimate weather early this week for their 2-game set in Cleveland. Because of these days off the White Sox should be just fine with a four-man rotation consisting of Lucas Giolito, Carlos Rodon, Dylan Cease and Dallas Keuchel over their next 10 days.
BeeVeeTee
Kopech can go three to four innings. It’s not a full nine inning game. We shall see what La Russa does with him.
Aaron Sapoznik
Before the game La Russa had stated 3 innings would be the maximum for Kopech provided they were efficient in regards to the number of pitches he throws. I still maintain that Crochet will likely relieve Kopech since he is sufficiently rested and also throws left-handed to counter the 3 lefty hitters in the Red Sox starting lineup. Ideally, the White Sox will get 5-6 innings out of Kopech and Crochet and then hand the game over to one of their late inning relievers for the last frame or two. La Russa also indicated that Liam Hendricks will be available for another save opportunity after posting one in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Who do you take out of the rotation when Lynn comes back?
DarkSide830
the logical solution would be Kopech unless he’s killing it. has been great in the pen and it’s good for his long term health.

I’m raging beyond
denistaylor
I thought he was pitching with a mask for a second there…
HBan22
Dane Dunning, meanwhile, is looking fantastic. As good as Lynn still is, I’m not sure if I would have pulled the trigger on that one in retrospect. One year of mid-thirties Lynn vs. five years of Dunning’s prime… Unless they can extend Lynn, they may come to regret that trade.
BeeVeeTee
The Rangers are not going to do anything for the amount of time they have Dunning until he becomes a free agent. Dunning is not pitching for a team trying to compete for the playoffs so there is no pressure on him right now. Dunning had a few good outings last year but he also struggled as well in meaningful games at the end.
stymeedone
It’s not like the White Sox have been playing like contenders to start.the season either.
BeeVeeTee
It’s the first two weeks of the season. If you really think these first two weeks of the season mean anything then you should not comment on baseball.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@BeeVeeTee, These weeks do matter, though. No, they don’t determine how a team will play the rest of the way, but they do count in the standings. With their runs scored differential, the Sox should be one of the best teams in baseball. Instead, they’re third place in the division and lucky as hell that Minnesota’s playing even worse. They need to get their act together sooner rather than later.
Dominic0618
Like the Yankees ??

I’ve never bought the pressure argument, and certainly don’t buy it in the first week of the season. All pitchers, especially starters, want to win, and if they wilt, it’s not because they are on a good team versus a bad team. It’s because they are easily rattled, and those pitchers often don’t last long in the league.
Dunning’s struggle last season probably had as much to do with the fact that he hadn’t pitched much in two years – and was a rookie – as opposed to being mentally weak.
And nothing in Dunning’s profile remotely suggests he’s mentally weak.
maximumvelocity
Dunning has five years of control left.
If they resign Lynn, and he can stay healthy, great, but getting rid of a young arm for a single year of an aging pitcher is always a huge risk.
The question I will always have is if the Rangers would have taken Cease over Dunning. Dunning strength is consistency, which may not make you an ace, but it keeps you in the rotation.
I’m still not sure Cease can stay in the rotation, even if he has greater stuff.
HBan22
@ maximumvelocity, totally agree. It’s nothing against Lynn, who is still a great pitcher. But the White Sox are a young, up-and-coming team who are planning on being long term contenders, and that trade just didn’t quite seem to fit with what they are trying to do… I just felt like Dunning was too steep a price to pay. The White Sox could have added a pitcher like Taijuan Walker or Jake Odorizzi, who admittedly are not quite as good as Lynn, but would you rather have Taijuan/Odorizzi and Dunning or just Lynn? I actually predicted that Lynn would go to the White Sox, but I didn’t think it would cost them Dunning.
WS_Right_Sox
They needed to nab an innings eater and the FO must have felt Dunning was most expendable of the crop of young SP’s they were willing to part with. Unfortunately you have to give something to get something. It sure didn’t help odds of the trade being positive in our favor with what was probably Eloy’s last defensive look in a Whitesox uniform. Monumental blow with his injury, but that’s sports! I’m still going to enjoy watching the growth of the other young talent this team has to offer in 2021!
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@HBan22, I wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on it at the time. Lynn’s been great so far, but one year of control for six is too much when Dunning has #3 starter potential. If Lynn had had another year of control and Dunning was still the price, then fine, but I think the Sox overpaid.
Prunella Vulgaris
I like seven inning games. How about you?
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Hate ’em. Of the four major sports, baseball is the easiest on the body. The extra time out there really only affects the relievers and catchers, but every team has a backup catcher and can call up an extra pitcher for a double-header. These guys can play the full nine innings.

David Barista
So how many pitches did he throw in the complete game shutout? There has to be a direct correlation to throwing 120+ pitches and this injury…. and he’s allowed to go that deep into the game because: yes he’s effective…. and yes the manager wants to appeal to Lynn’s ego…. it’s about an opportunity to accumulate stats rather than preserving health…. and the result is an injury
