Fernando Tatis Jr., Wil Myers Test Positive For Covid-19

By Connor Byrne | May 12, 2021 at 8:05am CDT

May 12: Wil Myers, who actually started last night’s game, exited after three innings when the team learned of a positive Covid-19 test, manager Jayce Tingler revealed after the game (link via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Eric Hosmer, meanwhile, departed for contact-tracing purposes and has been placed on the injured list as a result. The league’s health-and-safety protocols stipulate that a player who tests positive will be away from the team for at least 10 days.

The Padres selected outfielder Patrick Kivlehan to take Myers’ roster spot. Kivlehan, whom the Padres signed to a minor league deal over the winter, has hit .208/.302/.401 with 10 home runs in 242 PA in the bigs.

May 11, 4:34pm: Tatis tested positive for COVID-19 and is asymptomatic, Dennis Lin of The Athletic tweets. Profar and Mateo are in contact tracing. To fill their open roster spots, the Padres selected the contract of outfielder John Andreoli and recalled a pair of players – infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano and righty Nabil Crismatt – per a club announcement.

3:34pm: The Padres announced that they have placed shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and utilitymen Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo on the injured list because of Major League Baseball’s health and safety protocols. They’ll decide on corresponding moves before their game against the Rockies on Tuesday.

As is typically the case in COVID-related situations, there isn’t any word on how much time any of these players will miss. Regardless, it’s a blow to the Padres’ offensive depth. Tatis has gotten off to an effective start, albeit with much less on-base ability than he flashed in his first two seasons, having batted .240/.315/.552 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases in 108 plate appearances. Profar owns a far less imposing .234/.333/.308 line with a home run and five steals over 128 PA, though he has shown off defensive versatility by lining up at first base, second base and both corner outfield spots. And Mateo has hit a useful .250/.325/.417 through his first 40 trips to the plate this year.

This is the second time this year the Padres will have to go some time without Tatis, who was on the 10-day IL for part of April on account of a shoulder injury. They used Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim at short in Tatis’ absence then. Profar, meanwhile, has been the Padres’ primary starter in left field, but Tommy Pham hasn’t been far behind. He figures to get the lion’s share of action there with Profar out.

Did they just get vaccinated and are now facing symptoms? Or did they get caught without a mask at the local menards?

Masks do little to protect the wearer, they protect people from the wearer. If you are catching Covid after getting vaccinated, chances are you are being careless.

But I don’t care, get vaccinated, be part of the solution and live your life.

How does something like this work with the 40 man?

I think the only other position players (not including catchers) that they have on the 40 right now that are not on the IL are Marcano and O’Grady. I’m assuming they’ll want to add someone else to the roster as well…

Good question as the Pads 40 man roster is full of IL’d pitchers many of which have run out of options. I think they have to treat this player by player, and with Ona out, that leaves Marcano and O’Grady as only position players to call up, and the third will be a pitcher, probably Crismatt.. 2021 rules allow teams to take 5 additional players along (Taxi Squad), I don’t know who those are but they’d be available tonight.

I’m not sure who or how the “taxi squad” works in 2021 but Marcano and O’Grady both played in Tacoma Sunday for El Paso so, are they with the team after the game? Pads were on road in SF so they couldn’t have been in SF with teams. Someone know who the taxi squad is? It was different in 2020 as there were no minor leagues.

If a player is added to the COVID IL, then people can be added to the 40 man and then taken off the 40 man without passing through waivers.

If Padres lose the games that Tatis misses and they miss the playoffs by said number of games, (all because of his deadly asymptomatic infection), it will be a bigger disgrace than when Holliday missed home plate! The virus is real and every death it has caused are tragic, but some perspective would be nice. These are young, healthy athletes with functioning immune systems. Have you forgotten about players like Trey Mancini and Carlos Carrasco who recently have dealt with bouts with cancer? How about all the coaches, media members and stadium employees that are in close proximity to the players? It’s ridiculous to put all their lives and their family’s lives at risk just so a player could play sick with Covid.

600k out of 330M is not very few. It’s 1 in 550 people, and that’s only the deaths, nevermind the larger number of people with lengthy recoveries and potentially permanent side effects.

Go out and talk to people. I don’t think there’s a single American who doesn’t know someone who has died from COVID at this point. If they don’t, then they sure as heck know someone second-hand. It’s awful. There are literally dozens of students at my wife’s school who have lost a grandparent or parent. We know multiple people on our block who lost friends, and not just old people. How can you so callously dismiss SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND deaths?

No, they would not have “died from other causes” without COVID. Go read up on excess deaths. If anything, the official COVID counts are underestimating based on the number of additional deaths (closer to 900k) than would normally be expected over the last 15 months.

No rondon. The 5% figure you’ve quoted means that one of every 20 people who get the vaccine could still get “moderate to severe infection”.. But is it fully effective at preventing asymptomatic disease? Results of early studies say no.. Being vaccinated doesn’t protect you from getting and spreading Covid, but it greatly helps your body deal with Covid if you’re infected.

There’s an open question about how much the vaccine is going to decrease transmission, but at this point the science suggests that even if vaccinated, behave as if you’re not, so as to protect those who are not vaccinated.

Brewer… It means that it’s 95% effective in preventing you from contracting COVID. So if you’re concerned about the remote possibility of being asymptomatic, the answer is for more people to be vaccinated. That’s how it’s designed to be most effective. Politics or whatever aside, the problem is not with those who are vaccinated, it’s with those who are not..

Another word for “asymptomatic” is “carrier.” Typhoid Mary never came down with the fever herself but infected dozens of people, some of whom died, because she kept working and interacting with the public.

Opposing ballplayers frequently interact in close quarters during the course of gameplay, whether it’s an infielder applying a tag to a runner or a first baseman holding a runner on. Covid is still dangerous. It sucks from a fan’s perspective, sure, but some things are more important than winning baseball games.

@DrDan, please show me the peer reviewed study of how COVID can be passed from a tag play. Don’t you see how silly and scared that sounds? COViD is dangerous for immune compromised, comorbid and elderly. Please show me the MLB game that couldn’t be done with only young and healthy people…and yes, the asymptomatic Myers and Tatis included.

So getting vaccinated doesn’t prevent you from contracting the virus; it just prevents the virus from replicating in your system. You still have it, and depending on your active viral lode, are susceptible to transmitting it.

But beyond that, let’s appreciate that the Pads have the greatest collection of names in MLB….Tucapita Marcano…Nabil Crissmatt…..Agatha Christie couldn’t make up names like that………

Hence why people, even with the vaccine, should continue wearing masks while interacting with others not in their normal circle of contact, or if that group has contact with others (ie, players going home to their families then coming back to clubhouse).

It’ll be interesting, if we ever get the answers, if Tatis was vaccinated before this happened. Of course we may never know

All I can say is this. The virus zapped my 24 year old sister of enough energy to even go to the grocery store without stopping for rest, for over 3 months. She’s a nurse who normally works 24 hours shifts. I hope Tatis and the others remain asymptomatic. If you don’t know anyone close whos had a significant battle with covid, consider yourself lucky. It’s a nasty SOB when it grabs hold

I’ve been a good soldier for over a year now. Done almost everything that the so-called experts have recommended. I’m fully vaccinated with an experimental vaccine for a virus that was never a threat to me. I will no longer wear a mask outside, regardless of who is around me or if it makes them uncomfortable. Everyone who wants a vaccine can get one at this point. You don’t get to pick and choose what science to follow. I’m choosing to breathe unobstructed now instead of protecting strangers who can be vaccinated if they want. And if you can’t handle the vaccine, then maybe your number was just up. It happens in nature all the time.

.240 is definitely the new .300 and every team and player will get participation trophies starting this season as well. It’s like a while back when they tried to tell us that it was okay for a player to strike out 150 times as long as he drove in 80 plus runs with his 25 home runs.

Mystery – I don’t really disagree with where you are coming from on a high strikeout player but I was curious and found that only 65 players had more than 80 RBI in 2019. I don’t disagree with the fact that strikeouts are bad and nonproductive outs, etc., but I think the concept of adding an 80 + RBI guy to my line up when only 65 guys in all of mlb exceeded that amount, sounds like an upgrade somewhere in my lineup when the goal is to score more runs.

The typical 3-4-5 hitters in your lineup should be your high rbi guys. They are the ones who have the best hit tool and hopefully get hits with RISP. It is important that the 1-2 hitters do their jobs and get on base. Those are your high on base average guys. So you’re right in that the players don’t create RsBI in a vacuum, but they are clutch and drive the ball. It’s been the recipe for MLB batting orders for a few decades now.

All of you Tatis haters seem to forget that the guy is just 22 years old. Most players are still in the minors at his age. He is still learning and making some mistakes along the way.

Check back in when he’s about the same age Machado is today and let’s see what kind of a player he is.

if 240 after 96 injury-riddled ABs is your idea of stinking it up, then I guess you’re also writing off Lindor, Freeman, Goldschmidt, Judge, Blackmon,Torres, Votto, Rizzo, Muncy, Ozuna. But none of them are top 10 in SB and HR like Tati is. Hey if he’s 240 at end of season, then talk about it, but it’s early May, and BA alone doesn’t mean much.

That’s why I say if a player is producing around the league average, then pay them accordingly. None of these guys are earning their money. They are paid superstar dollars while producing average (or less) results. It makes baseball boring and disappointing to watch. ZZZ

Anthony Rizzo is under paid. He still has a .347 OBP and more walks than strikeouts. This is his final year of a 9/75 contract. It looks like his power numbers are down but I dont think its fair to say he isnt earning his money.

Let’s not forget the 11 errors so far this season. Top 10 in SB (a stupid stat) and HRs (the most important stat). Also number 1 in errors committed (far more important than SB, far less important than HR)

Tatis is having a so-so season so far, although it is still early.

According to Baseball Reference, the league average batting line right now is .234/.311/.392, so although it doesn’t look like Tatis is doing great from a traditional standpoint, he’s actually hitting above average from a league wide perspective.

Also, emergence of more positive tests today is certainly plausible, given the nature of similar scenarios with other teams/organizations. The antigen (quick) test. generates up to 50% false negatives, and until they get results of the PCR tests (24 -48 hour turnaround) we’ll not fully know the depth of the impact here.
