Minor MLB Transactions: 7/5/21

By Anthony Franco | July 5, 2021 at 10:32pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around baseball:

  • The Red Sox have transferred right-hander Eduard Bazardo from the minor league injured list to the 60-day IL, the team announced. Doing so will entitle the 25-year-old to MLB pay and service time while he rehabs but creates an opening on the 40-man roster. Bazardo, who’s dealing with a strained right lat, has made a pair of major league appearances this season. He has tossed three scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts and two walks.

Very possible, I was thinking along the same lines.

Maybe Franchy Cordero as he has been killing it since he was sent down a month ago.

Not really. He has the same issues which caused his demotion. In his last 45 ABs, he has a 19/4 K/W, with 1 HR, against AAA pitching, at age almost 27. He is, right now, nowhere close to being a major league hitter. At his age, and positional value, anything higher than a 2/1 K/W is a non-starter.

You went to a lot of trouble isolating his “last 45 abs”. I don’t think that’s a specific number used to looking at a players futures contributions. It’s as if you found a weak stretch and only want to look at that. Any comment on the other 91 abs, when he killed it? Or is this just more cherry picking, for a pre-formed option.

Franchy is a non-starter for a team with playoff aspirations. Maybe he can start for the Pirates or Oriels.

        • RS8

The 40-man spot is probably for another relief pitcher! The outfield starters are Verdugo, Hernandez, and Renfroe.

I would not be surprised to see the 40-man spot for Kaleb Ort or Raynel Espinal with Rios getting optioned. Most of you probably have no idea who those players are or how the Red Sox obtained them.

        • Oldschoolandthemets1980

If not mistaken, ort originally came over from the dreaded yanks.

        • jmi1950

Ort & Espinal were both minor league rule 5 picks from the NYY. Both are having nice AAA yrs, which means nada when you are trying to win a WS. Houck and Sale have shown the right stuff at the Major league level.

Hopefully the Sox can trade for a playoff experienced RP.

Durran is not going to the Olympics. Boston was okay with him going provided they can call him back if needed. Team USA decided to keep him off because of it.

Wonder if they’ll option Chavis and move Kike back to 2b to make space on the 26. It would be a dream if they dfa’d Marwin or Santana instead but this move makes that seem less likely.

I would keep santana over Marwin, Marwin clearly was helped out in Houston (bang) and has never been the same. Santana I feel with more daily playing time will come back into being a slightly better than average player.

Gonzalez, imo. He’s hit in the past. Santana has never really hit in the pros. From 2015-2021, except for 2019, with the super ball, he’s never had an OPS > .606.

        • KD17

JB – OPS again is not a good measure (use OPS+, it’s not good but it is better than OPS for comparison purposes) but your point is excellent. Bloom is nothing more than a guy who recycles garbage. I can’t believe how many debates this year are about how bad specific Bloom pick-ups are.

Who cares if utility schmuck 4 is better than utility schmuck 10? They all suck and fans are waiting for Bloom to ACTUALLY do something that helps the team. DD left him a great core group of players that he pruned down by getting rid of the best player, the sixth and seventh best players and JBJ. What did he add? A Mookie wannabe and utility trash and minor league hopefuls who currently have no value.

No Bloom all-stars, all DD all-stars. The Red Sox are winning because of the DD core group not any of the utility player adds by Bloom. I can’t wait until a REAL skill addition is made by Bloom so we can stop talking about all the crap he’s picked out off other teams’ garbage heaps!!

        • steviep

this is such a ridiculous take it’s almost not worth responding to. the Rays who Chaim led are one of the best teams in baseball and Chaim is widely praised around the league. also, KD17, your DD core is more of a Cherington core.

        • jmi1950

Stevie, save your breath. KD is a troll who ignores facts. He calls adding Ottavino, Whitlock, Pivetta, Renfoe Perez,Richards, Hernandez,Sawamura, without going over the cap and without giving up any prospects crap.

If that’s crap, it sure is working out.

        • KD17

Stevlep – Chaim didn’t lead the Rays he sat in meetings and learned from others but it doesn’t appear as if he paid attention!! Can you be more vague in supporting your argument? praised around the league? By the media, that’s a joke!!! The Rays have as many rings as you and I have. Great organization, great philosophy!! Poor team that can’t win but everyone feels sorry for them and acknowledges genius for competing but not winning in a sport that is measured by winning.

I’m documenting facts and you are writing horse crap opinions without sources. The only point you made that was valid is that some of the players that made up the core that won for DD were originally brought into the organization by Cherington (another fired GM who helped Boston win a ring). I take no issue in complimenting Cherington too but his mistakes cost DD his job along with Cora. DD kept the salary under the cap and Cherington’s bad deals put the organization over the cap which led to all the crap about austerity and getting under the cap prematurely which led to Mookie not being kept.

DD’s rep was that he over spent, which he did not based on actual salaries added by DD not retained salary from Cherington. So the last three GMs can be summarized as:

DD – By the best at keeping the right talent to win
Cherington – Great procurer of home grown talent but bad at free agency acquisitions
Bloom – worthless. The junkyard dog of GMs. Finds things on scrap heaps and pretends and prays they are more than what the previous team thought and brings them in for alleged depth. Inexpensive crap depth but depth. Has yet to raise the talent level back to the 2018 level or even the end of 2019 level before he sent Mookie, Price, Benny and JBJ packing. Lots of bad deals and next to no good deals.

To show how bad this ownership group is when it comes to baseball. The life expectancy of a GM is 5 years if you win a ring. If you don’t it looks like it will be longer!! How screwed up is that thinking? No more screwed up than losing Mookie or throwing away Benny.

        • KD17

jml1950 – Up yours. Which one of those players mentioned by you is an all-star? NONE. For good reason, nearly all of them are journeymen.

So the new GM can bring journeymen to an organization after giving up 4 players better than any of them? You applaud that thinking? You know nothing about baseball if you think Bloom is a good GM.

So lets stack Mookie, Price, Benny, JBJ and all the other players on the roster when Bloom arrived and that are gone now against the meager talent you listed. That’s your idea of improvement?

Seriously, if you want to argue at least have a basis for your weak ass arguments.

        • jmi1950

54 wins — 1st in the AL East is the only fact that counts.

If the Sox finish 1st in the ALE Bloom will win exec of the yr.

Barring an injury to an OF, I don’t think you will see Duran until late Aug. like what they did with Bogey in 2013.. That makes him eligible for post season and gives him Sept ABs to see if he is ready.

The Red Sox lead MLB in outfield assists. And it’s not like their pitchers give up a ton of hits. Teams will learn not to run in them sooner or later. With all the great outfields they’ve had over the past decades, it’s kind of amazing that the mix and match method is so effective on defense. Duran would be a nice addition. Less pressure with them winning. As good a time as any.

When you play in a ballpark with one of the smallest OF, throws are shorter and trying to add a base is more risky. The real question is whether those assists are because everyone is running on them. Assists don’t show much without knowing the number of successful bases taken.

I really hope they do add Duran to the 40-man roster, but they may decide to add a pitcher like Stephen Gonsalves instead.

I’ve been calling for a Santana DFA for a while now but he was instrumental in their win last night. He gunned a runner out at the plate and got the game winning RBI too (on an excuse me single to RF, but I’ll take it). Cora really seems to like this guy for some reason.

At this point in the season Duran has cleared the Super 2 group so the extra year is assured so there is absolutely no reason to not bring him up. That doesn’t mean the mindless Bloom will do the right thing but at least if he does it won’t cost Boston a year of control.

I would expect his promotion to coincide with their next home stand on Friday July 9th. So go buy some tickets to see him play AND you get a free water tumbler too!!!.
