The Padres will activate Yu Darvish to start tonight’s ballgame, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register (via Twitter).
Daniel Camarena has been optioned to Triple-A to create the roster space to add Darvish, the team announced. Camarena served up the game-winning two-run shot to AJ Pollock in the 16th inning of yesterday’s marathon contest. The 28-year-old southpaw has generated more buzz for his work at the plate this season, hitting a grand slam off Max Scherzer in his first career plate appearance. He had an at-bat in last night’s game as well, but he went down swinging.
For his part, Darvish has been out since August 13th with lower back tightness. He has a 3.70 ERA/3.71 FIP in 23 starts covering 131 1/3 innings with a typically strong 29.9 percent strikeout rate, 5.7 percent walk rate, and lower than usual 36.0 percent groundball rate.
The Padres have seen their pitching depth ravaged by injuries this season. If they’re going to stay in the hunt for the second wild card game, Darvish’s healthy return would seem a likely requirement. Chris Paddack could also be on his way back after a successful three-inning simulated game, notes Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

2 games in I’m happy with what I’m seeing from the new pitching coach Ben Fritz. Big chance for him to audition for the position next year. Small sample size of course. Time will tell but Fritz definitely seems more willing to use the analytics. Whoever their pitching coach is next year incorportation of analytics should be a top priority.
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
Dodger fans have been happy with the last 2 games too.
In all seriousness, fritz might be a good coach for SD.
Blake looked great until the HR.
Longest I’ve seen him pitch in a while.
I’m interested in what he changed for Snell.
Faith in the Padres
We will see if the changes have any long term success for Snell.
I’m interested in what Fritz / the new pitching coach will do for Paddack, Weathers, Morejon.
CrikesAlready
That was his longest outing ever. 129 pitches though, still nibbling.
JoeBrady
Snell’s ERA is 3.25 over the past ten games. I’m not sure if Fritz has been the pitching coach that long.
damascusj
Even the HR, was more will Smith going and getting a pitch way out of the zone. It wasn’t a mistake by Snell at all.
Props to smith

Analytics is not the end all be all of baseball stats. Analytic fans prefer OBP over Avg but I have never seen a runner score from second on a walk. No matter what WAR says a #5 hitter that has a .300 avg is more valuable than one with a .350 OBP. A bloop hit will score all but the slowest runners. FIP is a wonderful stat unless you are a pitcher that pitches to contact. Whip is one of the best stats to gauge a pitcher. Unfortunately, it is an old stat. Stealing bases gave HOF’s like Henderson and Brock long careers. There was several games that were won because they hit a single and stole a base (sometimes 2) then scores on a single. You can love analytics all you want but Oakland and Tampa haven’t won a ring with it yet.
Faith in the Padres
Analytics can’t be any worse than Larry Rothschild telling pitchers “dude trust me bro” on using his towel drill and you gotta use a breaking ball then fastball inside strategy against hitters.
Also, incorporation of =/= reliance on.
BeforeMcCourt
Bahahahaha. You’re trying to lecture about the Fallacies of analytics but think whip is the best way to judge a pitcher

Why option Camarena if Scherzer is starting
mlbnyyfan
Has any team fallen off the cliff more than the Padres. Okay maybe the Mets (haha) Padres better make a final push or more than just Rothschild will lose their job
Monkey’s Uncle
They’d just pitch around Camarena anyways, he rarely gets anything to hit anymore.
Eatdust666
Because his pitching statistics in a small sample size of 5 games and 9 innings are bad.

@mlbnyy Jays, Red Sox and A’s are 3 teams that fell off the cliff. LOL!

Padres were 53-40 in the first half of the season, and 15-21 since.
Mets were 47-40 in the first half of the season, and 14-26 since.
Jays were 45-42 in the first half of the season, and 21-18 since.
Red Sox were 55-36 in the first half of the season, and 18-20 since.
A’s were 52-40 in the first half of the season, and 18-18 since.
By W/L%
Padres .570/.417 ~ delta -153
Mets .540/.350 ~ delta -190
Jays .517/.538 ~ delta +21
Red Sox .604/.474 ~ delta -130
A’s ,565/.500 ~ delta -65
Clearly, the Mets had the biggest drop off, with the Padres and Sox also with significant drop offs.
On the other hand playing .500 ball after after being only 12 games over is hardly falling off a cliff. And with the Jays actually playing better in the second half, to say they’ve fallen off a cliff, is clearly incorrect.
AshamedMethGoat
Be curious to see the Padres’ pitching strategy tonight. Not sure how many innings you can expect from Yu before having to go to what must be a tired bullpen. Dodgers definitely have the advantage tonight, especially if Scherzer can give them 6 innings.
Here’s to hoping the Dodgers pay back the Padres for June and sweep them on their home field.
ChunkyMonkey
That 16 inning win at their park was already a HUGE crushing victory. A sweep would just be the cherry on top to the Dodgers.
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
2 wins against the Padres in one day?
Yes please.
amk1920
Another pitcher the media/fans told us the Padres didn’t trade much for. Owen Caissie and Reginald Preciado have massive upside. Darvish is a sticky stuff merchant.
JoeBrady
Most writers think that the team that got the biggest name, did the best in the trade. Maybe 10% will question whether the acquiring team gave up too much.
damascusj
Actually, you don’t know wtf you’re talking about.
Yu is one of the few pitchers who didn’t lose RPMs on his pitches since the crackdown.
He’s just pitching bad rn. Isn’t much better, but oh well

I can always tell when the Dodgers score at Petco, even away from the TV.
The crowd cheers louder for LA.
I don’t know why Padre fans hate us.
The seasons when they suck, they always sell out Dodger games.
Dodger fans have supported SD through their lean years.
Should rename petco, lil Chavez ravine.

Prior to the season I would have much rather been a Padre fan than a met fan, their collapse is much more disheartening
AshamedMethGoat
I think the Padres collapse is more shocking and worse than the Mets. The Padres, on paper, are a far better team than the Mets and have a little more depth, though neither team is particularly deep. The Mets played over their heads for a few months, which buoyed the already overhyped expectations from the Cohen purchase and Lindor signing. The reality is, the Mets were not a great team to begin with, though I would have expected them to win 88-90 games and finish second in the NL East. They still might finish second, but anything more than a .500 finish is a pipe dream.
Orel Saxhiser
I never expected the Padres to challenge the Dodgers. They finished six games behind L.A. in the 60-game season, which translates to 16 games over 162 games, which is where this is headed. Not much depth and their prospects haven’t developed as they hoped. Cronenworth is a good player, but if he’s your third-best hitter, you’re in trouble.
What really bit the Padres was the win-now edict that ownership apparently placed on Preller. The moves he made over the past year were designed to save his job., That’s not a good way to run a franchise. Preller has hired three managers. Will he be around to hire a fourth if Tingler is let go?
With all that, they’d be a playoff shoo-in had the Giants’ season not been so successful. Did you see the Padres’ dugout last night? They looked like an unhappy bunch all series, a far cry from early on when they led baseball in celebrations. Just 10 hits in 111 at-bats in the three games.
The Mets are just bad. In the just-completed 13 games against LA/SF, their offense slashed at .217/.295/.315. With RISP, they were 15-99, including 9-42 versus the Giants and 6-57 against the Dodgers. It’ll be interesting to see how their winter goes. If Cohen goes into full win-now mode, they could be bad for quite a while. His first step should be finding the right people to run things. That won’t be easy for an owner who gives the appearance of being meddlesome. Gotta wonder if Syndergaard, Stroman, and Conforto might want to get out regardless of whether the Mets make an offer. My guess is Baez will be a Cohen priority.
mrpadre19
Cey Hey “win now”?
Who did the Padre trade for who was a rental?
Pretty sure it was the Dodgers who traded their best two prospects for a 2 month rental in order to “win now”.
The Padres traded for players who will help them next year as well.
Oh,and the prospects they traded had nowhere to play “now” anyway.
Some good players….but most are still several years away.
Orel Saxhiser
The Dodgers have already been winning for several years, in case you haven’t noticed. Darvish was a win-now pick-up. Musgrove, Clevinger, Melancon, Caratini, Nola, Frazier. These players were all acquired so the Padres could win as soon as possible. Just one problem. The team they’re always chasing is better from top to bottom, and now the Giants are better, too.
Prospects still years away? Why is that? We’ve heard for years that the Padres have an elite farm system. So, where are the elite MLB players?
Btw, Trea Turner is not a two-month rental, and don’t be so sure Scherzer is. Good players like to play for good teams, especially when the good team isn’t shy about fairly compensating them. Remember when Mookie Betts was just a rental? He re-upped before playing a game for his new team. All this and the Dodgers have way more homegrown prospects on their roster than the Padres, and better ones on the horizon. Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin have essentially had lost seasons, yet are both better than any homegrown pitcher on the Padres. Where is the Padres’ Walker Buehler, Julio Urias, or Clayton Kershaw? Where is their Bobby Miller?
JoeBrady
1-I’d make a small wager that Betts had already agreed to an outline of a deal be the trade was finalized.
2-And, yes, the Padres had an elite farm.

Those are the young guys he traded away, and recently. That teams would cost you $6-7M in salary. With another $200M to spend on free agents, how hard would it be to have a .600 team?

Barring something crazy, the Reds will be in the wild card. Look at both the Reds and Padres schedules. One easy and one daunting. The Reds have played great since the all star break and the Padres reaching for a rope in quicksand
justkidding
And yet the Red’s offseason was harshly criticized on this site, because trading expensive replaceable players is wrong somehow.
Orel Saxhiser
The Reds deserve a lot of credit for sticking to their guns. A fun team to watch with good SP options for a one-game playoff.
Jonathan India is the player I hoped (and still hope) Gavin Lux would be. He does so many winning things.

Remember when Jed Hoyer got roasted for unloading practically all of Darvish’s remaining contract on San Diego? Meanwhile Owen Caissie and Reginald Preciado have turned into legitimate prospects; don’t get me wrong, I’m not engraving their HOF plaques yet, they’re still deep in the low minors, but the upside is undeniable.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The cubs are stacked at SS. They got Cristian Hernandez as well. Plus Ed Howard. Then they have one of the best prospects in baseball Brennan Davis. Who is ready now.

I thought Davis was a strikeout machine?

==========================================
I continue to be amazed by how shortsighted fans, and even worse, writers can be when it comes to trades. If a prospect doesn’t have a number next to him, people treat them like they didn’t exist. Fans and writers would both prefer a fading prospect, ranked #65, than four rising prospects ranked 101, 102, 103, and 104.
Orel Saxhiser
We Major League fans need to remember we haven’t seen these prospects. When it comes to player developmental, it’s more than just Minor League stats. Good scouting departments look beyond that when trading for other teams’ prospects. They look at the actual player’s are talent, demeanor, work ethic, and try to find players that they can develop. It’s the same with the amateur draft. You don’t just draft guys. You look at the individual player and have a plan for when they arrive. Granted, some teams are better at that than others.
It must have been difficult coming off a season with no Minor League season, but you can be Hoyer didn’t settle on those prospects out of the view. He consulted with people in his organization, and someone saw something in them.

How many times is ownership going to let Preller trade away all the youngsters for a bunch of big names that underperform?

Tingler needs to be fired today. He’s managing to lose the entire team at this point and there’s nothing he can do about it. The entire team looks like they don’t want to be playing. Pathetic.
Orel Saxhiser
The players looking like they don’t want to play should be on the players, not the manager. Solution: Get better players.
2020vision
I agree with it ultimately being on the players but I blame Tingler for being the cause. Look no further than Snell’s last start. The dude has never once thrown that many pitches in a game and Smith hits it out. If Tingler likes a lefty in that spot, he had a fresh arm in Tim Hill in the pen. One inning from winning to wearing out Snell for his next start. Way to deflate an entire team with another bad decision.
Orel Saxhiser
If one move deflates an entire team, then it isn’t much of a team.
2020vision
One of many bad moves by Tingler. If you leave an illness untreated or misdiagnosed, do you blame the body or the doctor when you know the vast majority of doctors could have saved a patient? Or, do you keep seeing the incompetent doctor and hope the patient snaps out of it? Paging Dr. Bochy…, you’re needed in the emergency room! Paging Dr. Bochy.
