Chris Sale Tests Positive For Covid-19

By Steve Adams | September 10, 2021 at 10:24am CDT

Red Sox Chris Sale has tested positive for Covid-19 and will not make his scheduled start Sunday, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (via Twitter). He’ll be placed on the Covid-19-related injured list, joining eight other Red Sox players who have either tested positive or are in protocol due to the recent team outbreak in Boston.

Major League Baseball’s health-and-safety protocols for the 2021 season stipulate that Sale will be away from the club for at least 10 days, further straining a rotation that has been heavily impacted by the team’s outbreak. Both Nick Pivetta and Martin Perez are currently on the Covid-related injured list, which has prompted recent starts from Kutter Crawford and Brad Peacock. Perez has been on the IL since Aug. 30 and could be nearing a return, and the Sox also currently have Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi and Tanner Houck in the rotation. The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham further reports that it’s also possible Pivetta could be activated to make Sale’s start Sunday.

The 32-year-old Sale missed the bulk of the 2021 season as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery but has been excellent in five starts since rejoining the team. He’s yet to pitch beyond the sixth inning but carries a 2.52 ERA with a 27.5 percent strikeout rate and 5.5 walk percent rate — both quite strong marks — in his first 25 innings since being activated.

The Red Sox have a fairly tenuous hold on the top Wild Card spot in the American League, leading the Yankees by a margin of just one game. Three more teams — Toronto, Seattle and Oakland — are within two games of that second Wild Card spot and within three games of Boston’s top spot. The Sox have managed to remain in competition despite an outbreak that has seen 10 players test positive since late August.

Sale’s positive test comes less than 24 hours after Red Sox right fielder Hunter Renfroe controversially claimed in a WEEI radio appearance with Lou Merloni and Christian Fauria that Major League Baseball had told the Red Sox to “stop testing and just treat the symptoms” (Twitter link with audio). Asked in a follow-up to confirm that MLB had instructed the Red Sox to stop testing, Renfroe replied with a simple, “Yes.”

Both Major League Baseball and the Red Sox moved quickly to refute the claim. Julian McWilliams and Kate McInerny of the Boston Globe cited a league spokesperson who called Renfroe’s claim “completely wrong and inaccurate,” while the team issued a statement indicating it has “been following MLB’s COVID-19 protocols all season long.” The Red Sox added that they have “continued to test and [the league’s] medical staff has been very supportive.”

Renfroe has not further addressed his comments, and there’s been some speculation that he misconstrued the league’s policy of reduced testing frequency for vaccinated, asymptomatic players, which went into place back in June. Under those updated protocols, vaccinated players are not tested for the virus unless they either display symptoms or are deemed a close contact from a person known to have tested positive.

The Red Sox are not taking it seriously. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Very few masks, very little social distancing, Bloom has yet to implement stricter Covid protocols and that’s why the Red Sox are STILL coming up with all these new Covid-positive test results more than a month later. First positive test was Venable on August 7th, no other team has continued to have so many new positive test results more than a month later.

Doesn’t matter, their apathy has resulted in the Red Sox roster being decimated and could very well cost them a postseason appearance.

Common sense says if there’s an outbreak on a contending team, do everything you can to stop it from spreading. It’s not rocket science, social distancing and sanitizing.

@Wtf, it “can” be serious for athletes. It’s just that there are not many athletes who have gotten it, so the rare cases where an athlete (or otherwise healthy, young person) would get really sick hasn’t happened much. There were some Olympic athletes who got really sick. Further, Alex Wood has been rather sick (un-vaxxed) and has put the Giants in a stressful pitching situation as a result.

you can still test positive with a vaccine, you still need to be quarantined to stop spreading it to others. there should be a modified quarantine protocol though rather than the mandatory 10 days, it should be like 24 hours or some such after testing negative since when you contract it after vaccination you clear it more quickly from your system

I don’t know what the Sox vaccination rate is. After losing E Rod for the entire 2020 season due to complications after contracting covid you’d think they’d have incentive to get the shot more quickly than most teams.

MLB should look into why some teams only have 1-2 cases and other have large outbreaks. Vaccination rates or some teams have better protocols and players willing to follow them.

the giants had an outbreak with like a 90%+ vaccination rate – I don’t know the status of wood but solano was vaccinated when he got it. Vaccination lets your system fight the virus more quickly and effectively but it isn’t a shield that repels the virus or anything. With guys in close quarters and a lot of close physical contact it doesn’t take much for it to spread and the testing and quarantine protocols are to keep it from spreading further and protect those who didn’t get vaccinated and those with underlying conditions.

The new delta variant can “break through” and cause infections in vaccinated people. The more vaccine bozos refuse to vaccinate, the more chance that the virus mutates further. Eventually some scientists believe, a new variant will arise that the current vaccines have little ability to deal with. Stop the spread. Get your asses vaccinated.

So genius let me ask you a question since it’s obvious you work for the CDC. If a person is not vaccinated but has gotten covid numerous times is t that just like being vaccinated? It’s the same antibodies is it not? So this theory on blaming the unvaccinated needs to stop being peddled by a president and a party because it will only further divided and divided country as is. People are getting the virus everywhere in the world, some countries in the Middle East have no vaccines yet they are not dying at alarming and worse records than vaccinated countries? There is allot we don’t know so rather than play the blame game let’s take it easy.

it is actually not like being vaccinated. Saying that it is is like saying that if you have been robbed numerous times and had cameras it is the same as having an alarm go off and the police showing up and stopping it. The vaccine trains your system to stop the virus once it is in your system without causing the harm to your body as the virus will or to allow a log incubation in which the virus attempts to adapt to your body, hence creating variants. We learned this in elementary school – hell my daughter just did a report about it in the first grade.

If you individually get COVID multiple times that would imply natural immunity is nothing like vaccination as that’s not what’s happening in vaccinated populations.

I don’t work for the CDC but certainly have the ability to read their website, which states that being vaccinated is better than relying on antibodies from a previous infection. Per the CDC website,

“Evidence is emerging that people get better protection by being fully vaccinated compared with having had COVID-19. One study showed that unvaccinated people who already had COVID-19 are more than 2 times as likely than fully vaccinated people to get COVID-19 again. Learn more about why getting vaccinated is a safer way to build protection than getting infected.”

But, you know, why not politicize it?

yea I mean it makes sense that specifically introducing your body to the blueprint of the spike protein coating of covid in order to allow it to recognize it on contact is going to be more effective than just letting your system do – whatever when it encounters it and try to figure it out while it’s systems are compromised

Vaccine helps the body recognize the virus and starts fighting right away.

Sure your body will eventually figure out a natural defense to fight COvId but that takes time. It may take up to a week for you body to figure that out. In the meantime the viral load keeps growing and growing while the body builds up the defense. Sometimes it becomes too much for the body to fight and play catch-up. The load can get too big.

The vaccine allows you to fight off Covid right away. It helps keep the load lower and allows you to fight it off faster. The quicker it’s gone the less of a chance you have to spread.

Flu deaths were EXTREMELY low this year. That’s good in general but very troubling for next season

        1) We will have less natural immunity since fewer people caught it this season
        2) It might be harder to identify which variant to vaccinate against. (The flu vaccines only protect against a specific strain and they have to guess which one is most likely)
        3) Pneumonia is usually a SECONDARY infection stemming from another condition
        4) Specific to COVID the use of ventilators makes it harder for the body to clear the lungs. Hence pneumonia

        As for internet doctors.

        1) the COVID vaccines work
        2) they are safe for almost everyone
        3) you can still get COVID after vaccination (1/5000 cases are breakthroughs)
        4) Ivermectin does NOTHING for COVID
        5) I’d personally like to know which MORON misled Americans about ivermectin. That person should be jailed
        6) Masks protect others, not the wearer as much
        7) The virus lingers in the air so places with poor ventilation are more dangerous (I will eat out now that I’m vaccinated but only outdoors)
        8) I’m not an MD but I have a degree in micro biology.

Probably the regular flu deaths being characterized as Covid. I checked this months back in Michigan. Most of the deaths caused by things that resemble Covid, were down, while Covid was up.

It was a strange negative correlation.

1 isn’t true as far as the flu goes but 2 is – you have a base level of immunity against the general influenza family if you have ever had the flu but the reason a seasonal flu shot happens is to guard against potential variants specifically reducing spread and symptoms. That means that the level of community immunity via exposure is irrelevant but #2 is a lot more important since variant prediction will be tough with less global spread over the previous year to make accurate vaccines this year.
This all means again that dumb people will get worse since now they will use the argument – well if the flu vaccine is ineffective all vaccines are ineffective because common sense and not science.

Communist crap? Hardly. Anyone who disagrees with your views are branded communists or fascists. If you are infected with the flu and experience flu-like symptoms (I assume that is what you mean by “if I get influenza real bad”), yes, you should stay home. Assuming, however, you don’t die. Though not nearly as deadly as COVID, thousands die a year from the flu. COVID is not the flu.

No one is being forced to vaccinate or go to jail. If they don’t wish to do so then there are consequences to not doing so, like losing your job. Of course mandatory vaccines have been legal in the US since 1905. And George Washington mandated that all his troops be be scratched with live smallpox virus. A person’s right to not be vaccinated is not paramount to Some people cannot be vaccinated due to underlying medical conditions or adherence to religious beliefs.

@Fred. Anyone who wanted to be vaccinated by now would be. You can’t “get” people to vaccinate. Either they want to protect themselves and their fellow human beings or they don’t wish to. Simple as that. All the benefits of being vaccinated and the dangers of not being vaccinated are out there. Have been for months. You can explain it to people, you can’t force them to understand.

        COVID is a VIRUS.

Take 5 minutes and read a white paper

But I do agree with you on “turn off your TV”

Fox News has vaccinated ALL their anchors.

ALL GOP governors are also vaccinated

        ALL GOP senators are vaccinated

I dont know about the House though haven’t seen anything about their rate of vaccination (makes me think it’s not 100% though)

Most SEC football programs are now 100% vaccinated (they are the most vaccinated conference)

I don’t know if Ivermectin helps much or not, but it is very safe to take and other countries give it to their patients. Not the “ horse medicine” version either.

Ivermectin is a parasitic drug. It is used in both humans and animals, such as horses.
Ivermectin did not win a Nobel prize. Those that developed might have (haven’t checked).
Ivermectin has not been proven to be an effective drug treatment for COVID. Just like injecting disinfectants internally has not proven to be effective.
Ivermectin is by prescription only. Which means a doctor must prescribe it (most doctors won’t do so). Which is why many are turning to the horse paste formulation because it is much easier to obtain. This is not meant fo human consumption and there have been reports of elevated “poisoning” reports following adverse reactions to consuming hires paste.
Ivermectin, like other other “45” inspired quack cures, has not been proven to be in effective in the treatment of COVID.
Don’t be a horses ass and consume horse medicine.

I know two people who got Covid. They both took Ivermectin,Remdesavir and Hydrochloroquine. They were out of the hospital in two days. So stop listening to MSDNC and other far left media outlets who refuse to report actual NEWS! Patients who know about this, and request it, have survived. By the way, it’s what 45 took and survived with flying colors.

I’m in the cattle business, and I know all about ivermectin. I use it and moxidectin on my cattle every year. I am not advocating its use, but it is being used around the world for treatment of COVID, whether it be compassionate use or a supplement to other treatments.
It is a safe drug to take, and if it lessens symptoms or even the viral load then it could be beneficial. If it doesn’t, then no harm, no foul.
But to hear Anderson Cooper, those idiots at TYT, or any other media person strictly refer to it as “horse dewormer” and make it seem barbaric to use gets me angry. As if those who do take it will grow hooves.

What I am saying is that it isn’t just “horse medicine” and that it is safe to use, so even if it did nothing at all that individual would still be fine. Obviously there have been plenty of people who have been prescribed Ivermectin by their Dr’s and have recovered quickly. Whether the Ivermectin helped or not, who knows. But they weren’t taking the horse paste from the feed store.

Will all doctors? Of course not. Your general physician can prescribe what he feels might work, and if you talk to your dr. about certain meds, he might let you try it out. Especially if it is a safe drug to take.
But yes, if you are in the ER, they won’t be giving you Ivermectin.

And this, from the manufacturer of Vekkury. “Risk of reduced antiviral activity when coadministered with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine: Coadministration of VEKLURY with chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine sulfate is not recommended based on data from cell culture experiments, demonstrating potential antagonism, which may lead to a decrease in the antiviral activity of VEKLURY.”

On the plus side no pro athlete has died for COVID.

Cedric Ceballos is the only prom level athlete that’s been hospitalized with significant symptoms as far as I know.

Opinion of 1. If someone is Vaxxed, they shouldn’t have to take any time off (unless they actually get sick)

The idea that we need to continue to protect either the vaxxed or unvaccinated is absurd. Either you’re protected or you’re not, and if you’re not you’ve had the opportunity to be and therefore assumed the risk

Come on Dusty, you have to know better than that. A vaccinated person who catches Covid can still spread it other people, so they have to quarantine that person for the betterment of society. Whether or not they need a full 10+ days of quarantine is certainly up for debate but as soon as someone tests positive, they need to be removed from situations where they are around other groups of people. It’s the only way to prevent another mass outbreak (which is starting to happen now).

@ Dusty – the Covid vaccination brings the SYMPTOMS of Covid in a vaccinated person down to something similar to the flu, but it does not change the virus into something less severe. That infected person can still spread “full-blown” Covid to other people. This is why they need to quarantine, as Covid can affect other people much worse than the carrier who has it. This is also why so many people have died from Covid. People with minimal symptoms or no symptoms spread Covid to other people whose immune systems can not fight it off and it has resulted in 100’s of thousands of hospitalizations and deaths. I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand your logic here. It’s still a deadly disease for millions of people so it should be taken seriously by anyone who contracts it even if they feel fine.

The vaccine is not 100% effective. New variants are “popping” up. The current vaccines are not as effective against some of the newer variants as the older ones.
Even vaccinated and non symptomatic persons can transmit the disease. The longer people don’t vaccinate the greater chance that a variant will happen which the vaccine will have little or no impact on. That means that many vaccinated people will be subjected to the disease as if they had never been vaccinated.

Moreover, the costs of treatment are huge, whether they assumed the risk or not, understand some 4,500 health care workers have died from COVID. So it can and does directly impact innocent victims.

Lastly, and as stated above, many necessary medical procedures are not being performed and cancelled because of lack of bed space or doctors being rerouted. I know I had to delay my yearly cancer screening.

@Fred. Anyone (with few exceptions) who isn’t vaccinated by now has consciously refused to do so. Moreover, it depends on how you define shaming. Unvaccinated people continue to spread a deadly disease. If death rates of 19-12x times that of unvaccinated people don’t do “the trick”, then you can’t really shame someone who doesn’t care about their own health, that of their friends or family, or of anyone else. Not only are they refusing to vaccinate but as David said, they are spreading lies about the vaccine and the disease. They are lost souls who are impervious to being shamed.
