Cashman Discusses Yankees’ Offseason, Provides Injury Updates

By James Hicks | October 19, 2021 at 2:27pm CDT

During the press conference announcing the return of Aaron Boone as manager, Yankees GM Brian Cashman offered some insight into the club’s offseason plans. Cashman was open with regard to the Yankees’ needs, telling reporters he’ll need to offer Boone more flexibility in lineup construction (Twitter links via The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler).

Most notably, the GM addressed the club’s need at shortstop directly and candidly, stating that “[s]hortstop is an area of need. We have to address it.” With one of the most highly regarded classes of shortstops in free agent history about to hit the market, the big-market, big-spending Yankees are a near certainty to feature prominently in the offseason rumor mill.

As MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand and ESPN’s Marly Rivera further noted, Cashman broke several pieces of news on the injury front: starter Jameson Taillon will undergo ankle surgery on October 28 and is expected to be out for five months. DJ LeMahieu, who underperformed expectations after a stellar 2020, has had a procedure to address a sports hernia that will keep him out roughly eight weeks. Cashman also noted that outfielder Aaron Hicks, out since a May wrist surgery, should be ready to resume baseball activities by December and hopes to play winter ball. Assuming all goes to plan, LeMahieu’s surgery shouldn’t have an impact on his availability to start the 2022 season, but Taillon’s timetable suggests he’ll only be ready to return to game action around the end of Spring Training, putting his availability for the Opening Day roster in question.

While Cashman suggested that he hopes to add more athleticism and contact skills to a lineup that had the sixth highest K% (24.5%) in the majors in 2021, Yankees fans have already begun to salivate over the forthcoming free agent market. All three of Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, and Trevor Story would bring a significant potential for star-level production to the Bronx — as might Marcus Semien or the enigmatic Javier Baez, potentially — and each would offer a significant defensive upgrade over incumbent Gleyber Torres.

Any from that group could represent an upgrade on both sides for the Bombers, but how Cashman views them remains to be seen. Though none are poor with the glove, Correa and Story (who have compiled 68 and 69 career DRS at short, respectively) have been a cut above the others. Correa will be 27 next season, giving him an edge in the age department, although Seager isn’t far behind as he heads into his age-28 campaign. Both Story and Baez will play next year at 29, while Semien — who played second base in Toronto this season but has a long track record at shortstop — will play next season at 31.

Though the Yankees are regularly players at the top of the free agent market, payroll implications may also play into their approach, as might the particulars of the forthcoming collective bargaining agreement (presuming, of course, that one is forthcoming). The club’s payroll came in just below the luxury tax threshold of $210MM in 2021, which may allow them to pay a lower rate should they become tax-payers again in 2022, but the only significant salary to come off the books is Corey Kluber’s ($11MM in 2021).

With a number of players set for significant raises in arbitration (most prominently Aaron Judge, though both club and player may prefer to reach an extension agreement), there’s not likely to be much room below the tax threshold for splashy free agent signings. Owner Hal Steinbrenner has not declared any plans to cross the threshold, but the club probably dipped below in 2021 for a reason. Paired with Cashman’s assertion that the Yankees will be “open to anything and everything” (Twitter link via SNY’s Andy Martino), the stage is at least ostensibly set for an active winter.

Following a season that saw them settle for a wild card spot and get bounced from the playoffs by the rival Red Sox, Cashman’s mixed tone is no surprise. Per Rivera, the longstanding GM described the 2021 Yanks remarkable inconsistency, stating that while they were at times “unstoppable,” they were at others “unwatchable.” As MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch relays, Cashman addressed fan disappointment directly with the “obvious” admonition that “we want more. We expect more.”

Injuries clearly played a role, but poor performance also loomed large. Among players with more than 100 plate appearances, only Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Luke Voit, and Anthony Rizzo (acquired from the Cubs at the deadline) posted a wRC+ over 100 while wearing pinstripes. The club’s pitching fared somewhat better but was also bitten by the injury bug, with only Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, and Taillon notching 20 or more starts and potential high-end righty Luis Severino logging only six innings across four appearances as he made his way back from February 2020 Tommy John surgery. With Kluber out and Taillon a question mark, the club will likely look to dip into the pitching market for at least a depth piece or two.

How, exactly, Cashman will address these shortcomings remains an open question, but he did offer some insight into other offseason plans in the Bronx, including making clear that the club views Torres as a second baseman moving forward and is not entirely committed to Gary Sánchez as its everyday catcher.

Both players were disappointments in 2021. Torres posted a .259/.331/.366 line (down from career marks of .271/.340/.493 entering the year) and was eventually moved from shortstop to second basse. Sánchez regained some of the pop (23 home runs in 440 plate appearances) he’d shown from 2016-2019 alongside a career-high 52 walks but continued to struggle overall; he posted only a .307 OBP driven by a dismal .204 batting average and 27.5 K%. By DRS, both players also struggled with the glove, with Torres costing the Yankees nine runs in the field and Sánchez ten (while throwing out only 17% of would-be base-stealers).

With Torres permanently moving to the keystone and Rizzo’s future uncertain, LeMahieu will likely serve as the Yankees’ primary third baseman in 2022, perhaps sharing time there with Gio Urshela as well as Voit at first — assuming Voit is back in the next year. With the Yankees looking to add a shortstop to the mix, they’ll be left with four regulars (LeMahieu, Urshela, Voit, and Torres) for the other three infield spots. As none of this group has any significant experience in the outfield, a healthy roster might leave Boone facing something of a logjam for at-bats.

With Severino expected to offer quite a bit more on the mound in 2022, better health from Hicks and Voit and bounceback years from LeMahieu and Torres could already go a long way toward righting the ship for a club used to contending for titles year after year. Addressing their need at shortstop with a high-end signing that improves the team on both sides of the ball may go even further.

While it is frustrating to Yankee fans that they haven’t won a WS since 2009, when you ask how Cashman still has a job…..try taking a look at their overall record over the last 20 years and how many times they have qualified for the playoffs and you’ll have your answer……

If you pay $200M a year just to make the playoff, I’m sure then you are happy with both Cashman and Boone

The early teams were Gene Michaels’ creation. 2009 was the result of signing Teixeira, CC, and Burnett, maybe the most expensive three FAs.

His production has trailed off quite a bit. In the past ten years, the NYY winning % is .562, or 91 wins. At that level of payroll, I’m not overly impressed.

Forget the COVID years and it’s about putting fannies in the seats and having playoff home games. Of course the want to win it all but how easy is it? When you’re consistently good, you pick towards the end of each draft. Easy to pick on him. Harder to replace him with someone better.

After finishing dead last multiple times, your draft become even more important while you hope you make more good player decisions than bad….and they have….but as far as a comparison….

Doesn’t matter Mr Red Sox…..he was still the guy in charge, averaging 95 wins over 22 years…….that had to make the player decisions….and his production hasn’t “tailed off”….averaging 95 wins a season obviously doesn’t impress a fan of your caliber.

JoeBrady – Don’t forget Cashman’s most expensive free agent signing that contributed to that 2009 championship …. ARod’s $275M contract signed prior to the 2008 season which was the biggest in MLB at the time.

Bottom line – It’s beyond asinine to give “credit” to a GM for making the playoffs most seasons when said GM constantly has the highest payroll in MLB. The only NYY championship that wasn’t bought was 1996, after that year all the others definitely were.

          NYY Payroll Rankings since 1999:

1999-2013 HIGHEST IN MLB EACH AND EVERY YEAR
2014-2017 SECOND HIGHEST IN MLB BEHIND THE DODGERS
          2019 THIRD HIGHEST IN MLB
          2020 HIGHEST IN MLB
          2021 SECOND HIGHEST

Now the Dodgers led MLB 2015-2017 after Friedman took over and has also been near the top of the list from 2018 thru 2021, but at least Friedman gets his teams to the World Series.

Why spend over $200 million a year on payroll when you can just spend less than $150 million and still get a 3 games to 0 lead in the championship series like Braves are doing to the Dodgers right now? Seems like a waste of about $60 million a year to me. I’m not sure why everyone wants teams to spend so much money when you clearly don’t have to do that to win. Even the Brewers and Rays spent less money than the Braves but they were still way better than the Yankees. Why do fans love it when their favorite teams throw money away like that?

Mammon. Why do people.get all whacked out about sports team? It’s not the sport itself, it’s the money and power they see growing up although it contributes nothing of real value to our culture/society, it is perceived as important because of the money, power and energy directed to it. So much, our brains respond because it must be important – look at all the power it commands. So the mind buys in to be part of the norm.

@Cosmo2: You and I both know there’s only one Amazin’ team in New York and it’s not the Yankees. I wanted to ask you something though. What’s the deal with this @fffbbb guy? Why is it that he muted you, Marlins Fan Base and myself? I am sure he has muted a ton of other people too because we were just the first 3 that noticed. Is it just me or is it weird he muted all three of us? What the heck did we do wrong? I thought it was a glitch at first but then the other guy could reply and @Steve Nebraska told me that’s why we couldn’t. I think he blocked Steve Nebraska too. I never block anyone even if I disagree with them but more importantly I don’t think any of us ever said anything offensive. Do you also feel some type of way for being singled out and muted while others weren’t when clearly none of us did anything offensive? Why block so many people? On the bright side we can say whatever we want about him and he will never be able to defend himself! Just kidding. I don’t even know the guy to say anything about him. Heads up to anyone reading this. It’s easy to tell if someone muted you. If you don’t have the option to reply to their comments that means they muted you. Apparently some subscriber named @fffbbb has muted a ton of people and frequently makes the first comment on articles so the people he muted will have their comments pushed down to the bottom. At first I thought it was just me which I could understand if he just didn’t like 1 person’s opinion. Then I found out he was muting a ton of people likely just to push their comments down when he has the top post. Lame IMO. I disagree with a lot of people on this site frequently. @Cosmo2, @Metsfan22, @cards81. I would still never mute them though. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I love to hears them and have discourse. Muting a ton of people just to shove their opinions to the bottom of the list is a lame fascist way of doing things. It’s like countries that block Google searches of specific topics they don’t want their population to be aware of. Especially considering that as far as I know none of us have ever even had a conversation with @fffbbb. If you ever see that screen name check and see if you can reply to his posts or not. If you can… It means he hasn’t noticed you yet.

Don’t know if it was him or not but that user used to get flack for that, it’s possible if it is the same person that the mute’s resulted from that. But it’s not that big of a deal, don’t sweat it. There’s plenty more people on here to converse with.

      Mickey777;

      Bravo!

Don’t know how many dozens of times over the years I’ve written that about offensive Catchers. There is no way in the world the stat geeks can possibly keep track of how many runs are given up, how many games are turned around, and how many Pitchers are frustrated by management that persists in playing Catcher because they are supposedly hitters.

Catcher is the most important position on a team in todays MLB. Last year the Yankees had 30 Pitchers threw for them. The mental aspect – keeping track of what those guys like to throw, what the pitching coaches and managers want out of them each day, etc. takes a players concentration. It takes a special person to prepare for each game and work with the individual Pitchers. Then there’s defense. Any hitting is a bonus. Sanchez is a natural hitter – many scouts and FO people believe he’s the best raw hitter on the Yankee roster. Instead of the Yankees developing that skill they they waste him trying to make him into a ML Catcher. He’s gotten better, but he’s still bad. Offensive Catcher’s that can’t play the position well are a lose-lose for both the team and the player. Cashman has ruined so many players – Sanchez, Andujar to start, and he’s got Gleyber down for the count insisting he play SS which Gleyber knows he can’t do at the ML level.

Cashman is an egotistical micro-manager in the AJ Preller group. And Boone goes along……..

The Yankees are in luxury tax Hell with zero flexibility to make moves. The Yankees need to trade Stanton while his value is a little higher now. The Yankees hung onto players Frazier, Andujar, etc when the trade value couldn’t get any lower. DFA Sanchez is priority number one. IMO trade Judge before he’s salary gets out of hand. I have no issue moving Gallo. Start with a lefty swinging Jake Cronenworth has good pop (21-71), decent average and multi-position flexibility (1b, 2b and SS). I also like Campusano and maybe a lower tier prospect like LH Robert Gasser.

I really like Cronenworth, and I think the Yankees and Pads do match up really well for a trade to address both teams’ needs. It will take a lot of fine-tuning the agreement, but Yankees have young players that would seriously benefit the Pads organization, both have contracts they would like to move, and I could see some very plausible trade ideas.

Start with what each needs from the other…. Yankees need Cronenworth, Pads need pitching? Okay easy enough. Then move in to the ancillary pieces / bad contract swap.

    – Non-tender Gary Sanchez, sign Yan Gomes
    – Sign Corey Seager for SS
    – Trade Gleyber Torres and Joey Gallo to the Padres for Eric Hosmer and Blake Snell
    – Sign Robbie Ray

Rotation would be as good as anyone’s with Cole, Snell, Severino, Ray.

Lineup would have less strikeouts, more contact. Defense would be extremely good. Only hole would be CF, which you could plug with a cheaper FA like Pillar or something internal.

Right now, according to Baseball Trade Values, Snell’s trade value is roughly the same as……Luke Voit. SD would be selling incredibly low. I’m totally on board with cutting ties with Sanchez though as well as signing Seager. I’m not totally sold on Ray though

The Padres already have Cronenworth, Frazier, Kim, and Profar, what in the world do they need Gleyber Torres for?

The Yankees are not going to take on $21 million of Hosmer, $13 million for Snell and then have to pay $15-20 million on Seager, $15 million on Ray. 20 years ago they may have, but not these Yankees today

Profar can opt out of his contract, which I think is a coin flip.. depends if he wants to play regularly vs get a guaranteed $7m.

Hosmer – Padres could eat some of this contract – specifically for 2022, but he’s only $13m each year after this year.

Your salary predictions for Seager and Ray are extremely off. Seager will get at minimum $30m/year.. Ray will get $20m+/year

Cashman has done a good job of getting talent and keeping this Yankee team in the mix. The problem has all come down to starters staying healthy and performance. Cashman needs to make 5 moves this off season to make the team more competitive. Sign Simien, Marte, and Taylor. to make the team solid up the middle. Trade Gallo, Urshella, Torres, Sanchez, Andujar, Frazier, Devi Garcia, and other minor league players for a catcher and some controllable pitching. I like Jim Bowdens idea of trading for Matt Olsen, and Contraras.
    The 22 Yanks look like this, 1, Dj, 2nd, 2, Simien SS, 3. Judge RF , 4. Stanton,DH 5. Olsen 1B , 6. Marte, CF, 7. Contreras C, 8, Taylor 3rd, 9. Hicks. LF.

They don’t care if they overpay as long as it results in other teams overpaying as well. They will even take those overpaid players off another team’s hands. Come to the yankees for the big bucks. Performance is optional.

No doubt, Cashman has skills. But he has been in place so long I think he lacks fire and hunger in his approach. He’s set in his ways and that becomes a major liability.

A new GM would potentially shake things up and bring in desperately needed energy and tactics. But I suppose Steinbrenner values consistency more than dynamic change.

I read a couple of key takeaways from this article:

    1) Cashman admitted being too involved in lineup construction and not giving Boone any flexibility – that’s a big statement for Aaron Boone. He also said the Yankees would be essentially looking to the market for a replica of Aaron Boone if they moved on, so…. Pointless.

    2) Cashman owning his involvement in what should be Boone’s decisions reflects that he is directly owning the past four years and the rehire of Boone, because he specifically said Boone’s the guy to turn this around.

    3) Cashman is brilliant, but historically constructed a repeat of the same type rosters (his kryptonite). Now that he is moving on and looking toward contact/speed guys where needed to complement the big guys? He could very well prove worth his weight in gold.

Is there a reason they wouldn’t at least give Loasiaga a chance to earn a rotation spot?

Injury risk pitchers can be good upside plays. But if you don’t have the depth behind them in hand, it can be difficult to convince it to sign. After all, as long as the injury risk guys are healthy, they’re going to be in those rotation spots.

Don’t fix what ain’t broke, but also, if I can get twice as many innings out of Loasiaga without breaking him, I’d like to do that.

Loaisiga seems to be slated for the closers role soon. Possibly as early as next year if they trade Chapman this offseason. The Yankees failed miserably at trying to turn relievers into starters in the past so I don’t think they want to go there again

Possibly, although it’s more likely Gil, some other good minor leaguer they have, or a cheap signing takes over until Taillon returns.

Cashman got locked into the job when Bob Watson resigned, and the Boss died. Hal and the kiddies do not have a clue and are afraid to change because they do not know how to run the club. Cashman is so locked into the job that even his little girlfriend scene would have gotten him fired anywhere else. He has more job security than the talking heads at CNN!

In no way do I blame Cashman for the World Series shortcomings. At the end of the day, he’s the reason we got as far as we did in years like 2019. He’s the guy who got Urshela and Lemahieu in the first place. At the end of the day, it’s the miscues of the players and coaches. If the players don’t do well in the Postseason, it’s their faults and their faults only. Not Cashman’s. I believe he’s the right GM to lead us to a World Series, we just need a perfect combo of players to get there.

Over-all, though, this is good news. Get a guy like Seager at shortstop if you wanna go the long-term route. A good one-year deal would be for a guy like Jonathan Villar or a shorter deal with Chris Taylor would be nice.

Voit’s most likely gonna be traded, so get a first basemen in that trade or sign one. In terms of FAs, Belt or a cheaper deal for Brad Miller or Mitch Moreland could be nice. I’d personally prefer a resign of Rizzo though.

Unfortunate about the Taillon injury, but we’ll be fine. He’ll be out for a month or two, which may mean Luis Gil is gonna be on the Opening Day roster.

As for Sanchez, I don’t hate the guy. I think he has no confidence and double-takes every play he makes in the field, which comes across as lazy(which I agree that he is at points). However, who’re you gonna replace him with? Higgy can’t hit, he’s the definition of a good back-up. In my mind, your only option is a crazy trade, Yan Gomes in free agency, or calling up Donny Sands, who was good in Triple-A last year(.793 OPS over-all, .816 OPS in Triple A. Overall is lower because he had a .775 OPS in Double A).

Roster is a slow and defensively inept. Two qualities WS teams never have. Inexcusable when the payroll is over 200 million. Worst amateur draft results of all time. Nothing changes until Cashman is finally fired. He’s a joke who doesn’t do anything well. 300 million he’d still fail.
